Tēnā koutou te whānau o Pirirākau. Ngā mihi nui ki
ngā whānau e mauiui ana i roto i o koutou kainga i
roto i te hohipera hoki. Kia piki te ora ki a koutou.
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2020. It has been
quite a busy start to the new year with recruitment of
new staff, holiday programmes, Te Ihu Waka
programmes and a lot of mahi going on in the
community with our whanau.
Staffing
Since the start of the new year we have recruited 4
new staff members to our team. They are Wilma
Akuhata and Joanne Deane who will be working in the
Home Care Support space as Coordinators, Theresa
Wynyard in the Community Nursing role, and Joanne
Kahotea our new Whanau Ora Kaimahi. I am sure they
will enjoy their time with Piriakau Hauora.
Clinic
Since we opened our clinic on 6th January things have
been going quite well. Our whanau appear to be quite
well at the moment. Dr Robbie Nicholas was kind
enough to offer support for our clinic to cover the
doctor hours that we have lost with Dr Bruce leaving.
Dr Nicholas helped out during the month of February
and was a great help to us. We are hoping that on his
return from Rarotonga he will be able to help out
when needed. Meanwhile Dr Christie is holding the
fort while we try to recruit another doctor. This is
proving to be quite difficult as there is a shortage of
doctors nationwide and we are one of many practices
looking for doctors.
There is a lot of publicity about the Coronavirus
otherwise known as Covid-19. To date there have
been no confirmed cases in New Zealand. If you have
travelled from/through Mainland China you will be
expected to self-isolate for 14 days. If you have any
concerns please ring the clinic and talk to one of our
nurses.
Congratulations
To Te Kapahaka o Ngati Ranginui on their success at the Ka-
hungunu Regionals and being placed first.
Nga mihi nui ki te kapa me nga kaitautoko. We are all so
proud of you all!!
Services
If you need support of any kind please do not hesitate to
contact our Whanau Ora team—Michelle Horne and Joanne
Kahotea. They are here to help you. IF they are not able to
provide the service that you require they will be able to
refer you to the appropriate person to help you.
As well as all the service that we offer at the Hauora on
Lochhead Road—don’t forget that we also have services at
Te Oturu on Paparoa Road.
The Mirimiri Service is available 5 days per week and the
Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy Bed is also available for use.
Please ring Te Oturu to get more details and book in for an
appointment.
Community Nurse
Our new Community Nurse has hit the road running and has
been out and about in the community working with our
whanau between here and Katikati. Theresa comes with
years of experience working in the communities in
Northland and is dedicated and committed to working with
our people. So expect a call or a visit, if you are due or
overdue with checks or just haven’t been seen for awhile.
Homecare Support Service
This service provides personal cares and home management
for our whanau 65+ years in their homes on the completion
of an assessment by Support Net. Our books are currently
closed while we train new staff but we are looking to
re-open our books for referrals in the next 2 weeks.
So if you think that this is a service that you or a member of
your whanau may need. Please phone the team and find
out more about.
Well whanau kua mutu taku korero ki a koutou mo tenei wa.
We look forward to a great 2020.
Nga mihi

Our topic in this months newsletter is information about ANGER:
When is it a Problem?
In small doses, anger is appropriate, normal, and healthy
emotion. Everyone experiences anger. It helps us stand
up for ourselves when we’ve been wronged, and protect
our own needs. However, in many circumstances, anger
can have unwanted consequences.
Anger is a problem when it negatively affects others. Anger drives people to act in a way that’s
unpleasant or harmful to those around them. This can result in straining or losing important
relationships when anger is out of control
Anger is a problem when it hinders performance at work and at school. Anger can lead to breakdowns
in communication, making it difficult to work with others. Additionally being pre occupied with
anger harms ones ability to concentrate on work or school tasks
Anger is a problem when it affects negatively on health and well-being. Anger affects both the physical
and emotional health. Anger contributes to anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol use.
If anger is affecting you and you need support please contact our CAMHS Service at Pirirakau

Phase one: Assessments
We are still assessing some whanau with the DHB Healthy homes assessment. These assessments are more so for our tamariki aged 0 -5 living in conditions that affect their health so much it leads to hospitalisation or frequent visits to the GP. It is essential that you make yourself available for these assessments as funding for home improvements is an entitlement and our kaimahi from Sustainability Options source this funding to be given back to your whare.
Phase two: Repairs
The Manawa Ora kaupapa has started its first 10 home repairs. Our whanau have had their electrics/electricity looked at and repaired by Smartsparx, cladding repaired by DJ Contracting and roofing repairs will commence in March by Adco roofers. The response by whanau has been positive and uplifting on behalf of these whanau and Pirirakau Hauora we would like to thank these kaimahi for their caring non-judgmental manner and efficiency working with our whanau in among their whare and community. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou.
We have also started to collect housing resources such as iron for roofing and heating systems for our kaupapa.
I would like to also reassure whanau that all who are on this kaupapa and have been assessed will be receiving repairs. Kaua e maharahara e te whanau. Due to the interest of this kaupapa, it is more manageable to create and work alongside 10 whare/whanau at a time.
Workshops:
Keep an eye out on our Manawa Ora Facebook page and Pirirakau Hauora Facebook page whanau. We will be holding some more curtain making workshops very soon.
Kia ora e te whānau ō Pirirākau
Whānau Ora is a kaupapa Māori approach that supports whānau to achieve their dreams and aspirations in
life.
Whanau Ora kaiarahi/navigator is to listen to what matters to you and your whanau. Through conversation
together we can start to develop a plan, setting goals with realistic and achievable “outcomes”.
Yes we walk or mahi beside the whānau that can look a little like a Social Worker, but when you are in this
space beside us we can and do play a key role in supporting whānau who can be experiencing challenging
times. Kaiārahi can help in connecting you to referrals or services that you want or need.
With the support of a Kaiārahi, whānau who are facing communication
barriers with a government service we can be there to tautoko you to
achieve successful outcomes.
Together we can set plans to flexible and realistic time frames. Whanau ora

Mirimiri
Mirimiri is traditional Maori Healing. In Maori Philosophy, MiriMiri is a vibrational exchange (Reo) be-
tween our Earth Mother (Papatuanuku) and the Goddess of the Sea (Hine Moana). "Mi" is a spacial vi-
bration (nga reo e pa ana ki te rangi) between Sky Father (Ranginui) and Earth Mother (Papatuanuku).
Mirimiri is steeped in Maori custom and culture. There are tribal differences with Mirimiri practice
throughout Aotearoa. Mirimiri is a holistic form of massage or bodywork.
Mirimiri is used for healing multiple realms of a person’s life. This is in contrast to Western massage
techniques which are primarily focused on the physical. Tension, stress and trauma accumulate in the body throughout our lives. This can manifest as pain, ill-
ness or dysfunction on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Mirimiri helps with the effects
this has on our wellbeing by bringing balance and harmony to the body.
Mirimiri is also a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and
ligaments. Practitioners typically use their hands and fingers for mirimiri, but may also use their fore-
arms, elbows and even feet. Mirimiri may range from light stroking to deep pressure. There are many
different forms of mirimiri.
However, our Mirimiri Practitioners will cater to what is best for you on the day.
In the onset of autumn and winter, we also offer Hot Stone Mirimiri to soothe away aches and pains . A
beautiful experience to re-connect with yourself.
Pricing is as follows:
All clients registered with GP Services $30
Pirirakau descent (not registered with GP) $40
Casual (not Pirirakau descent or registered with GP) $60
Mirimiri appointments are for 1 hour duration.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field therapy, also known as PEMF, is a drug-free, non-invasive, pain-relief alternative
treatment, which promotes accelerated healing for ailments and injuries via “stimulating cell regeneration”.
Human cells each have a specific vibration/frequency.
The QRS (PEMF Mat) produces an electromagnetic field, which imitates and creates the same vibration as healthy
human cells.
Everything that exists has a vibration, including every atom, molecule and thus the human cell. The QRS uses the frequencies of the body itself, which are generated by movement. The concept on which the QRS is based was that humans carry a symphony of frequencies in the body. By treating
the person through electromagnetic fields, it is necessary to offer the full package of personal frequencies that
support the body to perform its own functions.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy assists by improving circulation, reducing muscle tension, improving sleep,
reducing inflammation, improving tissue healing, reducing anxiety and stress - mental focus, and the body’s
overall performance by helping the energy output and regeneration of the body’s cells.
