Abhishek (ZU8) The Helen des Roches
Starfish Award is presented
to a dedicated person who
has served the community by
going above and beyond the
expected. The Star Fish
Award was created based on
a story of a young boy throw-
ing starfishes back to the
ocean after a huge storm. An
old man came by and asked
him why does he even
bother. He won't save
enough starfishes to make a
difference. The boy replies “I
made a difference to that
one.”
In the past, many super-
intendents, teachers, and
parent volunteers have
won this prestigious award
and this year on March 8th,
it was given to Mrs. Peter-
son. This award was given
to her for the difference
she has made in the lives
of the numerous students
and families she has helped
over the last 10 years. Mrs.
Peterson acts similar to
that boy as she makes sure
she helps every single stu-
dent get the help they
need. She has volunteered
in Morning Star for many
years and has helped us by
providing us with healthy
and nutritious bagged
lunches, supervising stu-
dents during the lunch
time, mentoring children
and serving on the school
council committee. She
also assists newcomer
families by helping them
get settled. Mrs. Peterson
has contributed a lot to
Morning Star and she is
indeed a deserving candi-
date for this award.
Congratulation Mrs. Peter-
son! Morning Star appreci-
ates you!

Did you ever think of learning science in an amusing and creative way? Well, at Morning Star, we had a scientist, named John Stokes, come in with the program called “Scientists in School” for the grade eights. To make the workshop worthwhile and memorable, he made up a story about trolls! So, who better to hear from than one of the trolls themselves?
Let's get more information from Emily the troll.
“Hi, my name is Emily, as you heard! I am the female troll that was trying to get to my school for a special occasion. No one from where we live (under a bridge), has gone to that school; since there are many
obstacles on the way.
For example, the first obstacle was a pile of rocks and that was the only way to pass through the rocky mountain! So we decided,
with the help of the classes, to use the help of a wedge. Now, there were three wedges, so we had to calcu-late the mechanical advantage of each wedge to see which one had the best
advantage.
After that, we had to move a rock away from the entry way off the cave. My brother and I decided to choose a lever in order to move the rock. Then we had to find out which class of lever we had to use. We ended up using the one with the
fulcrum in the middle.
After travelling through the cave for a bit, we had to use an inclined plane in order to climb up a hill. The kids in the classes pulled us up the inclined plane and measured how much work was needed. So, they
calculated using the formula, work= force
X distance.
Furthermore, when we climbed up the
inclined plane, we had to get out of the cave. My brother and I decided to use a pulley. We built a number of pulleys and we chose the one with the most
mechanical advantage.
Last but not least, we had to build an entrance system able to keep the monsters of the village out of our terri-tory. We built a drawbridge using all of the simple machines. They are: inclined plane, pulley, wedge, wheel and axle, screw, and lever. The draw bridge was successful and all the Trolls lived hap-pily ever after, without worrying about
the monsters.”
All of the grade 8’s would like to thank Mr. John Stokes for coming in and sharing his knowledge with us. We hope that he comes back next year to teach the grade six’s and seven’s of
this year, about Emily and the Trolls!

Between the days of March 9th to
the 11th the grade sixes were at
camp learning valuable new skills. At
camp we learned and experienced a
lot of new things. One of the main
things was “ The G.R.E.A.T Beads”.
Each bead stood for something they
hope we gain from this experience.
Goal setting: everyone at camp set a
goal to accom-
plish during our
stay to earn col-
oured beads.
Responsible leadership: there were
many leadership opportunities.
For example, during all meals we
had the KP (Kitchen Person) re-
sponsible for getting all the food
and cleaning our table.
Environmental awareness: all camp
activities were either based on the
environment (ie. Greenhouse,
Global Warning etc.) or were envi-
ronmentally friendly, like the na-
ture walk.
Art and creativity: stu-
dents made masks
out of plaster; cre-
ated photo collages
and designed protective cases for
eggs.
Teamwork and friendship: camp is a
perfect place to work as a team
and to make friends.
We used teamwork
in the great egg drop
and survival activi-
ties. In all of those
activities without
teamwork we wouldn't be able
to complete them successfully.
The last day of camp we were
upset to leave and draw an end to
all the activities. At camp we had
opportunities to experience new
things that we wouldn’t have
done any where else. One by one
each experience was symbolized
by a different colour bead and in
the end it was all GREAT!

The selection process is over, and eve-ryone is sure of where they’ll be next year. Other than Lincoln, there are many options that you could have cho-sen, including arts, technology, and pre-university programs. Quite a few Morning Star students are attending programs
such as Mayfield (a school that recognizes students who excel in music, dance, drama, and visual arts), North Park , an IBT program specializing in Inter-
national Business and Technology, and Turner
Fenton, which is an International Baccalaureate program . This year was very competitive in terms of the number of applicants. Each applicant had to go through an application process, which often included an interview/audition of some sort to apply. From Morning Star, 2 students will be attending Mayfield, 4 will be attending North Park and 3 will go to Turner Fenton. We congratulate all students who have gotten accepted into one of these
programs and wish them the best of luck next year.

Dear Diary,
This week, eighth graders have
been going to the Harbourfront
Center to make art. Today, it was
my class’ chance to at-
tend. I realized CTV was
coming to air live from
our school. I was disap-
pointed to miss it but I
didn’t let this ruin my
mood.
In the morning, we
were pumped up from a
bumpy bus ride. At the entrance of
the center, I caught sight of the CN
tower standing tall and proud. In-
side, a lady gave instructions on
our task for the day. We created a
stencil of our choice. Then we
soaked sponges in paint and
dabbed it around our stencil to
make a separate, colourful version.
This took time so we had a break
around noon. Although this trip is
meant to focus on art, lunchtime
was more fun. We ate outside on
a field with a few benches and
an enormous stage. Several pi-
geons were interested in our
food and kept circling us. So we
ran from bench to bench trying
to avoid the creepy
birds. After, the
breathtaking scenery
of Lake Ontario caught
my eye. I instantly
walked towards the
lake with my friends
for a better look and
came across a crowded
ice rink. Loud, funky
music kept us entertained while
we rested on a wooden pier and
watched skaters pass by. Sadly,
one skater kicked us out be-
cause we had no skates or hel-
mets on. So, we returned to the
field to join our other class-
mates who were dancing up on
the stage. Even my teacher was
having a blast and actually did
the duggie! We made a last stop
at a bridge
for a final
glimpse of
the lake. Up
on the
bridge, I spotted an amazing
sailing ship docked on the
nearby port. My friend was
freaking out because she was
afraid of heights. The second we
were called in, she ran off as if
the sky was falling. It was hilari-
ous! For the rest of the day, we
finished our artwork until it was
time to head back to school.
Other students were chatting
excitedly about their moment
on TV back at school. It sounded
fantastic but my class had a ter-
rific time on this trip as well! We
had an excellent day creating
unique artwork and enjoying
the beautiful scenery in down-
town. Now I’m already excited
for our next trip. I wonder
where we’ll go?
