Describe the elements of the WIMP interface? Windows allow the user to focus their attention on individual programs. Icons are condensedrepresentations of objects. Menus organize objects. Pointers represent the user’s onscreen control andshould give information about the actions available. List and describe the principles of universal design in short.

- Equitable use: the design is accessible to a wide range of people- Flexibility: the design can appeal to varied preferences and abilities- Simplicity: easily understood- Perceptible information: effective communication- Tolerance for error: safe design that handles unintended actions- Low physical effort: ergonomic design- Appropriate size and space: accessible to all users

Define principles, rules, and guidelines. Principles are general guiding ideas for a design. Rules are broad, easily interpreted instructions.Guidelines are universal ideas for creating consistent, understandable programs. List the 10 steps for conducting a user observation

1. Introduce yourself.2. Describe the purpose of the observation.3. Tell the participant they can quit at any time.4. Talk about the equipment that will be used.5. Explain how the user should think aloud.6. Explain that you can’t give help through the observation.7. Describe the product and the tasks they will perform.8. Ask if they have questions.9. Conclude by explaining what the purpose was, answering any further questions, and

discussing the user’s behavior.10. Use the results.

Demetre Papaiakovou and Tyler Smith

short answer: What are the pros and cons of direct manipulation?-pros: novices can learn the basic

functions error messages rarely

needed users gain confidence

and feel in control good for doing tasks

(for example, designing and

drawing)-cons: not all tasks can be

described by objects some tasks are better

achieved through delegating (for

example: a spellcheck or a script) What are the basic steps of performing a heuristic

evaluation? 1-ground your evaluation in known usability

guidelines 2-list every problem you find - dont group

problems together

- they all have a seperate issue 3-go through the interface at least twice i) get the look/feel of the system ii)focus on particular interface

elements 4-dont limit yourself to one set of

heuristics What is the minimum number of evaluators you should use?

justify

your answer. -3-5 because there is diminishing returns Why is using a severity rating important? -When resources are limited, you want to

allocate the most resources to the most serious

problems What are the most important design problems with the WIMP

style

interface.

-Menus -> can take up a lot of real estate -Icons, often it is difficult to determine

their meaning -icons should use nouns, not verbs -Windows -> need to be consistant, title

bar, scroll bar,

exit, minimise, expand buttons -pointers -> accurate pointers for

different situations eg: highlighter for

highlighting What are the pros and cons of the 'field study' style of

evaluation. pros: -finds usability issues in real-life

context - Evaluates working

implementation, in real context, on real tasts chosen

by the users in there daily work

routine

Exam questions:

1. SHORT ANSWER: List 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of the Expert Heuristic Evaluation with respect to Non-expert, Guideline-based evaluation:

a. adv->Identifies many more problemsb. adv->Identifies more serious problemsc. disad->Requires UI expertised. disad->Requires several evaluators

2. Design an experiment to compare the accuracy of clicking the close square in windows to the close circle in Mac OS.

a. define a hypothesisb. identify the independent and dependent variables

Page 5: Midterm 2 Review Questions for Tom Gibson and Hamidreza ...aalbu/seng310_2010/class review...Midterm 2 Review Questions for Tom Gibson and Hamidreza Eftekhardadkhah Sent: July 19,

c. briefly describe a methodd. what p value would the data have to have for it to be statistically significant

answer to 2:Hypotheses: The larger button in windows will result in higher accuracy.

Independent variables: the two independent variables are the two different interfacesDependent variable: the error rate of the two different interfacesMethod: A program running in the background will monitor clicks on and near the close

button. The error rate can be calculated from this.If p < 0.05, the results are statistically significant.

3. In a few short sentences, explain why an upwards pointing cursor relates better to the user’s conceptual model than a downwards pointing cursor:

a. The upwards pointing cursor relates better to how a user would point to something in ‘real life’ (. For example, when a person is demonstrating something on their computer screen to someone else, they would not point down on the object of focus, they would point upwards.

4. List 3 affordance of a coffee muga. Filling, grasping, drinking

5. Suggest one way to make the ‘perceived affordance’ of a graphical button unclickable:a. One way to make a button be perceived as unclickable is to grey it out (as is

done in most computer programs already)

SENG 310 Midterm #2 Review

1. You are part of the development team to redesign the automated ticket purchase kiosk at SilverCity Movie Theatre. You are in charge of one particular screen - the movie selection screen (where users define which movie they would like to purchase tickets for).

a. Using the three basic principles at the screen level, describe how you would gather the information to design the screen layout.

b. Draw a screen mockup of your design and describe how the five tools for layout are incorporated.

Answer: 1a. Ask: what is the user doing

● Identify what the purpose of the screen is --> select the desired movie● Identify how the user will interact with the screen --> touchscreen interface (using

fingers)● Identify what distractions user might face --> chatting with friends, using phone, crowded

environmentThink: what information is required

● Movie name● Film age restriction● Help option

Design: form follows function● Previous screen option● Films should be organized alphabetically● Once film is selected, system should automatically advance to the next screen

1b.

Grouping of items: items are grouped according to type (movie items together vertically and help/back items grouped horizontally)Order of items: Movies are ordered alphabetically so users can easily navigate to desired movieDecoration: Clean, simple interface and buttons are designed to be obviously clickableAlignment of items: Movies are centered to allow user to focus; help and back buttons are arranged at the top of and to the side of the screen to separate from main buttons of the screen and add importanceWhite space between items: White space draws eyes towards the center of the screen, where movie selection occurs
