Language Arts Program Starting in middle school, the English department at Lake Mary Preparatory School prepares students through critical reading, writing, thinking, and speaking using literature and non-fiction texts from a variety of disciplines. We are committed to engaging our students with classics, modern works, non-fiction, and high-interest pieces. Sixth-grade students transition into middle school through Pearsonʼs My Prospectives and Sadlierʼs Vocabulary Workshop programs. These resources promote student-centered learning through whole-class, small-group, interactive, and independent learning. Students build literacy skills including how to close read and annotate for increased comprehension, identify character/plot evolution, extend and utilize elevated vocabulary, research, and write analytically

Writing ProgramLake Mary Prep’s Middle School Writing 6 and 7 courses provide students with opportunities to develop their skills as writers, supplemental to the Language Arts 6 and 7 curriculum. The Writing 6 course focuses on the understanding and application of the six steps of the writing process: prewriting, writing, revising, evaluating, editing, and publishing. Students apply their knowledge of language (vocabulary and mechanics) to a variety of writing assignments and projects, many of which are cross-curricular, to strengthen their skills in writing and critical thinking. Student achievement is measured through a variety of formative and summative assessments that consist of individual writing assignments, group writing assignments, creative projects, oral and visual presentations, technology-based projects, and a final writing portfolio. The Writing 7 course emphasizes non- fiction critical writing, including MLA formatting, research, outlining, thesis development, and use of textual evidence as support. Parenthetical citations and bibliographies are also mastered. Skills developed in our writing program are used across curriculum throughout middle and upper school.

Skills Emphasized:

•Writing Mechanics:Understanding of spelling,capitalization, punctuationand usage conventions

•Writing Concepts andSkills:Understanding of thecomponents of effectivewritten composition

Math ProgramResearch shows that students develop essential quantitative and algebraic reasoning skills at different paces. Therefore, rather than offering grade level classes, Lake Mary Prep’s Middle School offers non-grade specific mathematics courses. This allows students to begin their mathematics track according to what is developmentally appropriate for each individual. A hallmark of our middle school math program is our emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and algebraic readiness.

Skills Emphasized: • Conceptual understanding of mathematics,

application of mathematical knowledge tosolve problems, and the ability to computeor estimate solutions

• The ability to communicate in the languageof mathematics

• The ability to analyze mathematicalconcepts and principles, to makegeneralizations, and to compare quantitiesmathematically

• Development of problem solving andoperations skills with variables, equationsand algebraic geometry

Social Studies ProgramThe objectives of the Social Studies program in the Middle School are to facilitate the understanding of good citizenship and the importance of active involvement in the global community, while preparing the students thoroughly for the rigors of Upper School. These objectives are accomplished through the study of World Cultures, Geography, U.S. Civics, and U.S. History in grades 6 through 8. Study is enhanced with a focus on critical thinking and analysis, a vigorous writing program, and implementation of technology.

Science ProgramLake Mary Prep’s Middle School Science courses offer students the opportunity to develop as active and engaged scientists. Learning essential science skills with an emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is an important part of the middle school. Frequent science lab opportunities provide an environment for students to perform experiments, collect, and record data enabling the development of critical thinking and analysis skills. Students develop an understanding of the scientific process necessary to reflect insightfully on their hypotheses and make essential cause and effect connections. Student achievement is measured through a variety of assessments that consist of lab experiences, group work, research writing, data analysis, and technology based projects.

Advisory ProgramAt Lake Mary Prep, we believe that advisory classes and character development are both

important aspects of an adolescent’s social and emotional development. Due to this strong belief, our Middle School students participate in weekly advisory classes. These classes,

held every Thursday, focus on the character development of our students. Topics in our advisory include: respect, conflict resolution, bullying, coping with peer pressure, adolescent changes,

and more. Additionally, we emphasize time management, organizational skills, and goal setting.

What sets LMP apart from other schools is the one-on-one support we offer our students both academically and socially. This support comes from our teachers and administrators. Our

advisory class environment, which is informal, fosters these student faculty relationships. In the Middle School, student led conferences are developed with each student and his/her advisor. The goals set during these conferences encompass all aspects of each child.

Class Trips Pathfinder Trip

During this three-day, two-night program our Sixth Grade students study Florida’s ecology and their relationship with the natural environment. Students take part in multiple activities designed to increase critical thinking and the ability to make healthy choices, strengthen bonds of friendships, trust and mutual respect, learn conflict resolution, appreciate diversity, stimulate responsibility and increase positive self-esteem. Students participate in a variety of team-building activities that foster a strong sense of friendship and unity.

Everglades Trip6th grade earth science classes will study the environment while language arts will be reading The Talking Earth. In conjunction with this, Mrs. Karnbach and Mrs. Riddle plan a field trip to The Everglades Youth Conservation Camp located in the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area which is in the northern tip of the Everglades in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is operated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The purpose of this field trip is to provide hands on activities in order to instill an appreciation for the ecosystems of southeast Florida represented in The Talking Earth, while building an understanding of the conditions encountered by the main character, Billie Wind. During our two day stay, students will explore and learn about the different ecosystems and organisms through hands on activities, scientific field observations, and hikes led by an experienced guide familiar with the Seminole history of the area
