My school term was over and I was back once more in my home town. I spent the first few days just relaxing and reading, getting over the strain of the semester examinations. One afternoon, I was reading one of my favourite books while lying comfortably on my bed. My mother was sitting outside with my younger sister, chatting with a neighbour. At times, I tried to follow what they were saying, but could only pick up the low hum of their voices. My baby brother was in the next room, but he was just getting over a slight fever and was sleeping quietly. All of a sudden, the bed began to move and quiver. For a moment, I lay there, wondering whether my occasional movements were making the bed shake. Then, looking up I saw the walls swaying in and out. I jumped off the bed in alarm. My first thought was to dive under it and take shelter there. Instead, I stood where I was, feeling the floor trembling beneath my feet. I knew then what was happening. An earthquake had struck. I went on standing there, looking at the door of my bedroom; my fear kept me rooted to the spot. Just then, my mother rushed into the house, calling for my baby brother, with my sister clinging to her and shrieking in terror. I went after them, shouting and waving at them to get out into the garden. In their panic, neither of them seemed to see or notice me. In a few seconds they both came back, with my brother in my mothers arms and ran out by the front door. I rushed after them, and made for the road outside our house. But I could not go on. The continual shaking and shuddering of the ground made it almost impossible to stand. I did my best to keep my balance, stretching out my arms and spreading my legs as wide as I could. I remained there, swaying backwards and forwards, trying to focus my eyes on what was happening around me. In the distance, men were moving about, yet somehow they seemed unreal. It was like seeing things in a dream. I was so dazed and frightened by what was happening, I could not see or hear normally. No human sounds were heard, no voices to reassure me. All the while I was aware of a low rumbling beneath my feet. The earth was now shaking violently but the destruction that was taking place appeared to me strangely slow. I saw one of the walls of our house come tumbling down and observed every movement of its collapse as if in a film where everything was in slow motion. As I stood not knowing what to do, I saw huge pieces of stone and brickwork come rolling across the grass towards me. I dont remember much after that I must have become dizzy and then collapsed unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I was lying on the ground. As soon as my senses cleared, I ran around the ruins of our house to find out what had happened to my mother and my brother and sister. I found them huddled against the fence, safe and unhurt. I was relieved they were all right, but irrationally, I found myself worried about the book I was reading when the earthquake struck. I left my family and went rushing into the ruins of the house. The book wasnt in my bedroom. In my confusion I thought I had dropped it somewhere else. It was nowhere to be seen. Stupidly, I was convinced that someone had stolen it while the earthquake was going on. Then, shouts and screams came to my ears and took my mind off the book. I ran outside again and over the fence saw the neighbours children jumping and running about. But their screams were not of fear. They were very young - maybe about two or three years old and did not know about earthquakes and disasters. They were plainly amazed at the sight of the houses without roofs or walls and even excited by it. Their own house was undamaged. Being built of bamboo, it had merely swayed with the movement of the earth and then stood still again. Clearly, the sight of one of the walls of our house tumbling to the ground filled their young minds with awe and wonder. Then I caught sight of my father running down the road towards our house. Apparently, he had been resting in his office when the earthquake struck. Without thinking, he had run all the way to the house, shouting out, My children ! My children! I had never seen him so dishevelled or untidy before. He was so relieved to find us safe and unhurt, he just hugged my brother to himself. He cried unashamedly, the tears running down his tired and lined cheeks freely. I stood there watching helplessly, ashamed of my silly anxiety about an old book.
