Mid-Atlantic Tire is a single location tire & auto service retailer located in Easton, Maryland, owned by Mr. Terry John.
Since opening in 2005, Mid-Atlantic Tire Pros and worked hard to become the destination for tire purchases and vehicle repairs in the area. Terry and his staff are very involved in their community, sponsoring a
number of non-profit initiatives and Terry is always looking for ways to better engage customers and build customer loyalty.
The Mattie Rewards program was launched in October 2015, featuring a variety of popular reward currencies including airline miles, Gift Card Points and Mid-Atlantic Tire Pros’ very own reward currency, Mattie Points.
Leveraging The Reward Program The program is free to join; customers enroll using a special reward website, choose one of the reward currencies and earn 1 point or mile per $2 spent. There are quarterly bonus offers and customers who choose Mattie Points can redeem them for free service or donate some/all of their point value to a group of local non-profits that Terry and his staff support.
Using nightly data pulls from Terry’s shop management software and the reward website enrollment info, Lift & Shift provides Terry with weekly reporting on who has enrolled in the program, what rewards have been earned and/or redeemed. Terry is also provided with a dashboard, illustrating his program results.
Terry does a great job of promoting the availability of his program in his marketing mix, ensuring area consumers are aware of it, helping to draw in new customers and repeat visits from existing customers. Lift & Shift deploys a monthly reward email to all program members, letting them know of the current bonus offers and providing them with their account balance. Open rates for the reward email are very high and help remind customers to come back to Terry’s shop next time they need service or a set of tires.

Average Transaction Size
Reward customers increased transaction size by 22%Existing customers who joined the program increased their average transaction size by almost 22% versus only about 6% for those who did not join. The average new customer who joined the program outspent the new customers who didn’t join by almost 15%. This is a common occurrence with reward collectors – they will tend to come in when a big purchase is planned, knowing they will earn a lot of rewards.
Visit Frequency
Reward customers visited 91% more often
Existing customers who joined the reward program increased their # of visits by almost 10% versus only about 6.5% for customers who did not join. More importantly, the reward customers visit almost twice as frequently as non-reward customers (91% more often) – a crucial metric in an industry where the average consumer services their vehicle only 2-3 times per year. New customers who joined the program upon their first visit also came in more frequently than those who did not join – by a difference of 43%, starting them on a path towards becoming loyal, repeat customers.
Total Spend
Reward customers spent 75% more than non-reward customers
More visits and more spending per visit adds up! Existing customers who joined the program increased their total spending by almost 34% versus only about 13% for those who did not join; in fact, the reward earners spent over $600 (about 75%) more than non-reward customers. Similarly, the average new customer who joined the program outspent the new customers who didn’t join by exactly 64%; they also outspent existing customers who didn’t join by over 34%.
Using Terry’s shop software data, we looked at pre-launch data to set his benchmark levels for # of visits, average transaction size and average total spend per customer. We then compared that with post-launch data and looked at the differences in behavior by existing customers (those who had visited Mid-Atlantic Tire Pros before the program launched) and new customers (those who came in for their first visit after the program launch).
