Dear JCC Afterschool Berkeley Families,

Thank you for your participation in the fall chugim session! We know there were some glitches along the way, and we appreciate your patience and input. The fall session of chugim did provide our students with a variety of activities, which resulted in some real transformative moments. It’s our plan to increase those impactful moments in the winter session, which starts immediately when you return from the winter recess.

Before making your final winter chugim selections, please make sure to read all the directions below.

Chugim is the Hebrew word for enrichment and the beginning sound is much like in the word chutzpah. This is the plural version of the word, where a single enrichment is referred to as a chug.

Chugim registration will open on Sunday December 18 at 10:00 AM!

Thanks so much for your ongoing support as we strive to provide you and your families with a warm and enriching afterschool environment!

Sincerely,Ryan and David

Things Fall Down: Building Blocks and Marble RunsKids: We build stuff with 1500 building blocks and with marble runs. In the past, we’ve made a haunted house, a harbor, a castle, a baseball stadium, a mosque — just about anything you can imagine. And the marble runs — I looked at a dozen different marble runs and the one I’ve bought for you is definitely the coolest.

Parents: Frank Lloyd Wright credited these sorts of blocks, and building with them as a child, for his success as an adult architect. The set we used is designed for students K-3, though the hardest problems I pose are harder than any can solve. The constant spatial visualization combined with the kinesthetic is a huge part of their mathematical development; research has found that this is especially true for girls. The Cuboro marble run is a Swiss-made system that fascinates children and gets them thinking logically and spatially. It is a part of some curricula in Europe, with challenges for students through grades 1 - 8. It’s that good.

Henri Ducharme has taught math, design, and chess to children for twenty years. He studied math at Oberlin College.

From boats to bird feeders, doll furniture, clocks, games, airplanes, and many more, the kids have a wide range of projects to choose from besides designing and building according to their own needs and imagination for the veteran carpenter.

In addition to the fun kids have they also gain quality experiences in measuring, applied math (including fractions), problem-solving, craftsmanship, and empowered by the hands-on experience.

Knock Out: There Can Be Only ONEThis class is filled with fitness, fun, and finesse as students build hand eye coordination (catching, shooting); cooperation skills; and collaborative goal attainment through the fever pitch pace of one of the most iconic games you can play with a basketball.

Knock Out is simple. Students line up and the first two receive balls. The person standing at the front of the line shoots. If a child makes the basket, they pass the ball to the next person in line without a ball. If the first person misses the shot, the second person has a chance to get them out by making their shot before the person in line in front of them. This goes on until there is only one person left. At the end of Chugim season, a commemorative mini basketball will be signed by participants and presented at the Enrichment Fair.
