Gold medals at the Santam Art Competition

A number of Micklefield girls participated in the 2019 Santam child art competition. The theme this year was 'I spy with my little eye'.

Congratulations to Leah Farlem (Gr 3), Jodi Smith (Gr 5) and Emi-ly Wilson (Gr 5) who were selected to be showcased in the annu-al online exhibition and were awarded gold medals. The project is aimed at promoting a love of art among youth, and provides a platform for the expression of ideas and creativity. The art competition is nationally recognized with thousands of en-tries. Only a small number of participants were selected as gold medalists and are now featured in the online gallery.

ous morning and the walk through the vineyards boasting stunning views was a happy occasion. A huge thank you

who participated. The fantastic sum of R20 000 was raised towards furnishings for the new learning centre. World

Raising awareness, funds and developing essential entrepreneurial skills are key aspects of the Grade 6 Social Entre-preneurship Project. The project is a much anticipated part of the Grade 6 year. The girls are required to start a business which aims to better our community by partnering with an organisation in need. Organising sales, collec-tions, school talks, volunteering time and raising money, the girls are certainly busy throughout the year. The pro-ject greatly benefits the organisations, however, the biggest impact is the learning that takes place for the class. Learning to be valuable members of our community who actively help to improve the conditions for our people, environment and our furry friends certainly broadens their understanding of the world we live in.

The organisations that have enjoyed a partnership with Micklefield School this year: Peadspal, Steps, eKapa, Cape Leopard Trust, St Josephs Home, GROW Educare, Christine Revell Children’s Home, Nazareth House, Mdzananda Animal Clinic, Tehillah House, TEARS. Well done to the Grade 6s! You have been committed to your project and to helping those in need.

The Shocking Pink tour kicked off with a friendly welcome at Elkanah House in Tableview and a packed assembly.

After lunch, we were confronted by the grand hall at Parklands, which the girls afterwards described as ‘scary’, with

its thick red carpet and glossy grand piano.

Perhaps our most appreciative audience was the tiny country school at Riebeek Kasteel, particularly their big-

hearted principal who was inspired by our singers in pink to develop a choir of his own. And finally we visited

Bridgehouse in Franschhoek. Part of the learning curve of the tour was to walk into an unfamiliar venue at each

different school and adapt our performance to the setup and acoustic conditions. Everywhere we went, we were

followed by positive comments on the courtesy and good behaviour of our Micklefield girls.

Overnight, we found time to unwind in the beautiful surroundings of Picardie Guest Farm in Paarl. We all have

memories of bonding as a team and the spontaneous a cappella ‘concert’ at the Paarl Spur which attracted a small

crowd of workers out of the kitchen. Shocking Pink came home with stories of feeding alpacas and tasting Belgian

chocolate but the real story was all about the music. Micklefield can be very proud of this special group of singers.

The Magenta Penguin

The Foundation Phase outdid themselves this term with their production of The Magenta Penguin. The original script was written by Tara Hall as a promotion for SANCCOB. It told the story of a colony of penguins on Boulders Beach who were affected by an oil spill. Mrs Gildenhuys adapted the script for the Micklefield stage ensuring that every girl in FP played their part. The stage was awash with colour as sea creatures in amazing costumes swam in the ocean waves. Seagulls and birds flocked and settled on the rocks. Tour Guides educated tourists about the endangered African Penguins on Boulders Beach. The penguins made friends and had adventures, which included a night out in Simonstown, an al-tercation with some cats and some hilarious sharks. Finally they were faced with the devastating effects of an oil spill from a passing tanker. The girls loved the experience of being in a big play, the audiences enjoyed the entertainment and SANCCOB bene-fitted from the generous donations and the sale of their products. So all in all a successful undertaking! Well done to all the staff involved.

Gr 00 & 0 Nativity The Grade 00 and 0 girls shone in their end of year performance starting off the festive season. We were enchant-

ed by their confidence on stage and their melodious singing. A truly talented group of girls!

Rounders On Wednesday the 27th of November the staff took on the Grade 7 class in a heated game of rounders. The staff dressed up as the Springboks and the Grade 7s were VSCO girls. The game was very tense and for a while it seemed as if the Grade 7s were dominating, until the teachers launched an amazing comeback, but fell just one run short. By the end, the score was 21 - 15 to the Grade 7s - a very close win! Afterwards, the Grade 7s celebrated their win by showing off their well prepared flash mob dance that they performed at their Leavers' Dinner. Sportsmanship and passion was shown throughout the game, but the Grade 7 VSCO girls came out on top. Well done everyone! Written by Cate Lea

Gr 4 Market

The Grade 4 market was the best day of the Grade 4 year! The Grade 4s have been looking forward to it the whole year. It was a fun and enjoyable day. We had lots of fun and learnt how to work with money. The Market was really successful and we made lots of money. We decided to support SANCCOB and Steps as our charities. It felt good to work together, help the younger girls to buy things, have fun and support a good cause.
