March 2011

Dear Conference Participants,

Welcome to the 21st Annual State of Michigan Equity Within the Classroom Conference and to the campus of Michigan Technological University.

The theme of this year’s conference, The Changing Face of America – Helping Michigan Compete, aligns well with our University Goals and is particularly timely for the state.

The success of Michigan relies on the education of its youth. Michigan’s educational institutions must work together to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to graduate from high school prepared to continue their education at a community college or university. The issues related to equity within the classroom are multifaceted and in order to find solutions, it will require collaboration across all of our institutions. Partnerships between secondary schools, community colleges, universities, state organizations and the future employers of our students are more critical than ever before.

The Equity Conference provides an important forum for addressing our strengths, identifying challenges and learning from each other’s research and experiences. This Conference also offers you an opportunity to develop professionally and personally, and I encourage you to build networks that will provide ongoing support.

I hope that you enjoy your visit to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Copper Country and that you have some time to get to learn more about our campus and students.

Thank you for participating and best wishes for a successful conference.

Sincerely,

Glenn D. MrozPresident
