Gree ngs and Welcome to the District Assembly, Many years ago, the Church of the Nazarene was planted in Michigan’s soil. In December 1914 our first district assembly was held at Grand Rapids First Church of the Nazarene (GRIF today), the first Nazarene congrega on in the state. We are beginning our 100th year as a district and will, in fact, be celebra ng our centennial at next year’s district assembly. The year just past has encountered many things. We have, and are, facing some unprece‐dented challenges in every way. Many churches are facing pastoral transi ons and other tests. What the evil one wants to do is get us to turn our eyes off of Jesus and onto the is‐sues. If we fail to trust in His provision and lack faith, all will be lost. But we are not a faith‐less people—to the contrary! We will not be overcome by the challenges but will, instead, be challenged by them with the great expecta on of what God is planning for us (Jeremiah 29:11). The district assembly is one of those sacred mes where we gather together and are able to be renewed and challenged for the ministry God has for us in the year to come. So, enjoy the inspira on of the assembly, listen carefully, respond to the Holy Spirit in dealing with elec ons and other business items. It will be a great assembly! Yours and His,

God is doing some incredible things across our District and District Assembly pro‐vides us a glimpse at some of what God is doing. I want to thank everyone who has helped make this Assembly and this Handbook possible. Many people have completed reports and requests in a mely manner, and for that I am grate‐ful. Welcome delegates of the 100th Michigan District Assembly: The Michigan District has spent 99 years in prepara on for our coming 100th year celebra‐on. We have enjoyed God’s blessing and an cipate that year 100 will be our best year

ever. Year 99 saw us complete an audit of Indian Lake Nazarene Camp as well as financial con‐sulta on reports by Yeo and Yeo of both Indian Lake Nazarene Camp and the Michigan Dis‐trict. Implementa on of the sugges ons in these reports has begun with more changes scheduled for our 100th year. Our 100th year will mark a new beginning and set the stage for even greater things during our next 100 years. Thanks are again due to all our local treasurers who con nue to adjust our budget process. It has been a challenge but everyone seems to have risen to the occasion. Your prayers con nue to be appreciated.

The 2012‐2013 Advisory Board of the Michigan District met at the District Office Complex in Grand Ledge for our regular bimonthly mee ngs. The board also met April 6, 2013. The board mee ngs al‐ways begin with a Spiritual emphasis that is present throughout the remainder of the mee ng.

The Advisory Board also sought to carefully monitor the finances of the Michigan District under the leadership of the District Treasurer, Dr. James Schweigert and the newly appointed District Finance Commi ee.

The Advisory Board approved a Sabba cal for Dr. Seaman. The Advisory Board voted to bring District Financial accounts into one accoun ng system. On March 26, 2013, we recommended duplicate creden als be issued to David P. Anderson. The

CHURCH HEALTH BOARD

The Church Health Board (CHB) exists to encourage, nurture, and assist our congrega ons to experi‐ence church health. In this endeavor, the Michigan District Advisory Board has charged the CHB with oversight for the following:

Church Health ‐ Healthy churches are churches people want to be a part of. Working with the mission‐al area leadership, the CHB seeks to assist pastors in the growing of healthy church communi es by providing tools to assess and review on an ongoing basis the health of their congrega ons. Looking at where the congrega on is struggling through several assessment tools is the first step toward church health. Other tools help a pastor and church board to take next steps. The CHB approved tools are made available to pastors through the website onecml.org. Diverse Cultural Ministries – People naturally congregate and align themselves with those who are like them. As the world around us changes (the United States is becoming less and less Euro‐centric and looking more and more like the variety of ethnic groups we see around the world), the CHB serves as a catalyst to resource local churches to reach diverse cultures in their communi es. This engagement by local churches with cultures different than themselves is fraught with tension and requires a long me‐line for people to interact and accept others different from themselves. Going takes encouragement and support and resources for understanding and engagement. Georges Carole provides that support to the local church. The CHB resources his salary and expenses. This year, Georges worked with pastors in the Lansing, Grand Rapids, Jackson and Muskegon areas to exchange ideas and iden fy strategies to grow diverse cultures within the local congrega ons. New Start Strategy Team (NSST) – The CHB assists the NSST by providing resources to local churches in the new start and restart processes. This year CHB provided $10,000 and coaching services to the new start in downtown Owosso, the Intersec on. It also resourced the April Mission in America conference to help churches learn about the growing sex trade in this country (and your community) and strate‐gies to reach the unchurched in local communi es. Evangelism – Holiness is the hallmark of the Nazarene church. Throughout the Nazarene denomina‐on’s history, a spirit‐filled life has been the central focus; a key method for focusing on holiness has

been revival services. While Harold Myers works with churches to enable the tradi onal revival service (iden fying evangelists and the Reserve Army providing funding where needed), another method of revival is growing in the district through a collabora ve effort in Greater Lansing area, between the Holt, Woodview and South Lansing churches. They developed and offered to their congrega ons and other churches a revival weekend called Encounter God. The first Encounter was held in September 2012 and over ½ of the 60 people in a endance were filled with the Spirit of Jesus. The second En‐counter offered in January 2013 saw over 50 of the 94 people a ending going forward to be filled with the Spirit. The CHB supports the evangelis c efforts provided through both means of revival.

Missional projects funded – The CHB and MIF seek to resource new, out of the box ideas local church‐es are engaging for the purpose of reaching local communi es for Christ. The following projects were funded this year:

Lansing South’s Be the Church / Love My City Lansing Outreach – a Sunday outreach partnering with city officials, local businesses, and schools to serve impoverished areas of the city, building rela onships and allowing the Spirit of Christ to invade the local community on a day and me that is unexpected.

Missional Area Coordinators ‐ Following restructuring of district ministry, the CHB is dialoguing with missional area coordinators to understand how the CHB can resource them as they work with area pas‐tors. Change in Composi on and Terms of CHB Members – To provide greater con nuity to transi ons in leadership, the CHB will change in composi on beginning with the June 1, 2013, fiscal year through the addi on of one clergy and one laity member to the two clergy and two laity members currently elect‐ed, each one serving staggered 3 year terms.

ILNC Contribu on – The CHB authorized a $35,000 contribu on to ILNC to help strengthen it’s financial posi on.

We, your Commi ee on Ministerial Support, recommend the following:

I. Ministering to Our Pastors and Ministerial Staff

A. That our church boards do all they can to relieve the pastor from financial worry and discomfort,

as well as from the need of secular employment, by striving to supply the following compensa‐ons; and that the pastor make every effort to give full me to the work of the church, not

engaging in secular work except where it is absolutely necessary:

1. Moving expenses for new pastor (i.e., van costs, family travel expenses, interim salary compensa ons, etc.).

2. Adequate star ng salary, not including fringe benefits (i.e., commensurate at least with star ng teacher salaries in the community).

3. Car reimbursement, in addi on to the pastor’s salary, be given.

4. A Medical Plan, paying the premiums covering the pastor and family.

5. Full self‐employment tax reimbursement, computed on basic salary, fringe benefits, parsonage allowance and/or fair rental value of parsonage, paid at least quarterly.

6. Vaca ons granted to all ministers on the church staff, with salary and pulpit supply paid by the church; that the dates are to be set at their discre on with the approval of the senior pastor and the church board, and the vaca on me shall be based on the following formula:

a. at least two weeks for pastors serving the denomina on 1‐5 years

b. at least three weeks for pastors serving the denomina on for 6‐14 years

c. four weeks for pastors serving the denomina on for 15‐19 years

11. That the level of apprecia on and respect for the ministry among the congrega on be li ed by remembering the pastor, the pastor’s spouse, and the parsonage children in special ways on birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas.

12. That our churches par cipate in Nazarene Re rement Program (tax‐sheltered annuity) by contribu ng at least an amount equal to 5 percent of the pastor’s salary; and that our pas‐tors consider contribu ng addi onally to the fund.

13. That our church boards plan a Pastor/Staff Apprecia on Day suggested in October or some‐me during the year.

14. That pastor and all staff salaries and benefits be thoroughly reviewed annually. Salary in‐creases in cash or benefits shall be at the discre on of the church board.

15. That each local church consider ways of guarding needed private me for their pastor and the pastor’s family to maintain and enrich their rela onships. They represent the church’s most valuable resource.

They deserve our love, our support, and our prayers. We recommend pastors take a day off each week.

16. That churches and pastors giving considera on to study leaves are asked to consult with the district superintendent for guidelines in planning.

17. That a sabba cal plan be considered for a pastor who has served a minimum of seven years in the same church. A sabba cal plan is available through the district office, or the Clergy Development office at the GMC.

II. Ministering to Our Evangelists (tenured, commissioned, registered, and song evangelists employed

by the local church for ministerial services)

A. That each church board agree on minimum compensa on to a called evangelist. Realizing that he receives no paid vaca on, receives no remunera on for me lost due to sickness or seasonal inac vity, we recommend that the church board be generous in paying evangelists (i.e., two mes the pastor’s salary, plus cash benefits, per week) when the evangelist provides his own housing during the mee ng, he be compensated for the same or consider designa ng a por on of the compensa on as housing allowance.

MINISTERIAL SUPPORT (con’t) B. That our churches plan some program to underwrite the major por on of the evangelist’s compensa on prior to the mee ng, and that added considera on be given to husband/wife

teams carrying the total program. C. That the local church board remember with a Christmas gi the evangelists and song evangelists that have served their local church during the past year; we suggest a gi equal to 5 percent of

the compensa on given them. D. That the local church with a commissioned evangelist or a commissioned song evangelist as a member pay one‐half of the evangelist’s district hospitaliza on and one half of the evangelist’s

Social Security tax.

III. Ministering to Our Re ring Pastors and Evangelists (those receiving basic pension) That the church board endeavor to express in a tangible way its love and apprecia on to its re ring pastor or evangelist through ongoing assistance with medical insurance, farewell ac vi es, paying moving expenses or a por on thereof, and a love gi of monetary value.

IV. Other Recommenda ons

A. That copies of this report be sent by the district secretary to the pastor and church board secretary of each local church, and that the local church board secretary present this report to the local church board at its September mee ng.

SABBATICAL POLICY MICHIGAN DISTRICT CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

PURPOSE OF SABBATICAL To provide long‐term pastoral staff and their family the opportunity of a sabba cal leave for the purpose of professional development, personal and spiritual renewal, rest, and visioning. By means of a sabba cal leave, the congrega on wishes to express gra tude and affirma on to our pastor and family. At the same me, it is the intent that the church will be challenged to a special me of renewal as well as an enlarged vision of its ministry. SABBATICAL TIME FRAME FOR THE SENIOR PASTOR A sabba cal leave of seven to thirteen weeks will be provided to the senior pastor a er the comple on of each seven years of consecu ve full me employment. It is preferred that the seven to thirteen week sabba cal be taken in consecu ve weeks. However, a two session sabba cal could be considered, by each local church. The scheduling of the sabba cal leave shall take into considera on the needs of the congrega on, the scheduling needs from the pastor’s proposal, and other per nent concerns as may be established. SABBATCIAL TIME FRAME FOR ASSOCIATE PASTORS A sabba cal leave may be considered for full me associate pastors at the discre on of the senior pastor and church board. A sabba cal leave provided for an associate pastor shall follow the same guidelines as for the senior pastor and as set forth in this outline. SABBATICAL PLANNING The use of the seven week sabba cal will be primarily planned by the pastor and shall require church board approval. It is recommended and preferred that the sabba cal include ac vi es and events that will carry out the purpose of the sabba cal as stated above. The church board shall appoint a Sabba cal Commi ee to receive and review the pastor’s proposed plan of sabba cal leave. It shall help establish specific expecta ons of the sabba cal and present the plan to the church board for review and approval. It shall help develop a plan for implemen ng the sabba cal leave and carrying on the ministry of the church in the pastor’s absence.

SABBATICAL POLICY (CON’T) MICHIGAN DISTRICT CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

These specifics shall be followed:

1. It shall be the responsibility of the church board to ini ate the planning by se ng aside funds on a regularly scheduled basis to finance a sabba cal. A budget line item should be established to track the accumula on of funds.

2. At the end of the Pastor’s sixth year of employment, the board shall appoint a commi ee of a minimum of three individuals from the board and the congrega on. The commi ee will serve from the date of receipt of the pastor’s sabba cal plan un l the sabba cal evalua on is complet‐ed upon the pastor’s return.

3. At the end of the pastor’s sixth year of employment, the board shall ask the pastor to prepare a sabba cal leave i nerary to be presented to the church board. The pastor’s proposed plan shall be received by the Sabba cal Commi ee six months prior to the planned date of commencement of the sabba cal. The proposed plan should focus on the specific objec ves of the leave. The proposed plan shall also outline how the pastoral du es will be carried out in the pastor’s ab‐sence.

PROCEDURE FOR CONTINUING THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH DURING THE PASTOR’S SABBATICAL LEAVE The pastor will provide a proposed plan for the con nuing ministry of the church during the sabba ‐cal. The pastor will be responsible for appoin ng persons from the pastoral staff or arranging for in‐terim leadership to carry out the administra ve du es, congrega onal care ministries, and pulpit re‐sponsibili es. It is recommended that only normal ac vi es and regularly scheduled events in the ministry of the church (i.e. Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening service, regularly scheduled board mee ng) are to be carried out. During the sabba cal, contact with the senior pastor should be limited to the following:

1. Serious illness or death of a member of the congrega on.

2. Any event that the Sabba cal Commi ee and the interim pastor jointly determine to be an emer‐gency situa on; and/or . . .

3. A specific prearranged request by the senior pastor.

FINANCING OF SABBATICAL LEAVE 1. The church shall make the following financial commitment during the pastor’s sabba cal leave:

The pastor’s full salary and benefits will con nue. There will be no reduc on of salary or benefits during the dura on of the sabba cal.

2. Seminar or educa onal expenses incurred by the pre‐approved sabba cal plan will be supported by the church according to professional development policies.

3. A sabba cal budget will be established with the amount to be approved by the church board a er considera on and approval of the sabba cal plan. The budget may assist with addi onal expens‐es (e.g. travel expense).

THE PASTOR’S FAMILY DURING SABBATICAL LEAVE The pastor and his or her spouse shall determine the role family members will take in the sabba cal leave. That role shall be included in the proposed plan for sabba cal that the pastor submits to the Sabba cal Commi ee for board approval. The pastor’s immediate family members may, but are not expected to, a end regularly scheduled ser‐vices and/or ac vi es. The pastor and family members shall be free to communicate with the church community as they desire. However, to enable the sabba cal to accomplish the intended purpose, it will be requested of the congrega on and the board that no direct communica on be made with the pastor or the pastor’s family members. RETURN FROM SABBATICAL Upon return from sabba cal leave, the pastor shall first meet with the Sabba cal Commi ee and interim pastor before re‐entering his du es of ministry. A date shall be scheduled for this mee ng prior to the commencement of the sabba cal leave. The purpose of the mee ng shall be twofold. First, the commi ee and interim pastor will inform the pastor of all issues that have arisen in his absence, bring him up to date on all ac vi es, and discuss the effect the sabba cal has had on the church. Second, the pastor may in turn give a brief oral report to the Sabba cal Commi ee on his ac vi es and what he feels transpired with regard to carrying out the goals of the sabba cal.

SABBATICAL POLICY (con’t) MICHIGAN DISTRICT CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

The pastor and the Sabba cal Commi ee shall each prepare a wri en report at approximately one month following the pastor’s return. The first Sunday worship service following the pastor’s return should be planned as a celebra on of renewal for the pastor and congrega on. STIPULATIONS

1. Sabba cal leave will not negate any of the pastor’s earned vaca on. Vaca on days may not be used to extend the length of sabba cal leave.

2. Sabba cal leave will be in addi on to board approved events or seminars throughout the sabba cal year.

3. No more than one member of the pastoral staff may be on sabba cal leave at any one me. 4. No personnel shall be hired or terminated while the senior pastor is on sabba cal, unless approval

is given by the senior pastor. 5. It is advised that district responsibili es held by Pastor or Staff be suspended during the sabba cal

me, except for “end‐of‐year” reports. 6. This sabba cal leave policy shall be reviewed periodically. 7. The purpose of this policy is for direc on and is not intended to be all conclusive. Proposed

changes or addi ons in the above policy may be submi ed to the Sabba cal Commi ee and presented to the church board for approval.

EVANGELISM

This past year has been very interes ng. It has been my privilege to be able to serve in this ca‐pacity of working with pastors on our district. I have gained some new insights on pastoral ministry since being on the Church Health Board that have helped to widen my perspec ve in the role of Evan‐gelism Director.

My goal is to keep trying to bridge the gap between pastors and evangelists and the role each

one plays in church ministry. I am keeping other leading evangelists aware of what is going on in our

district and how we must adapt our philosophy of ministry to be effec ve in holding revivals. I have

go en involved with Dr. Larry McKain’s new strategy ministry focus and it has given me a new ap‐

proach of communica ng be er skills for outreach evangelism in the church. I have a ended the En‐

counter God series at Lansing South Church of the Nazarene and it has opened up some new insights

where evangelists can be er apply their skills working with pastors. There is much to be learned in this

area of Evangelism. I have gained a good rapport with pastors on our district and respect the func on

of what each pastor has for his church. I am sharing these insights with other evangelists to conduct

revivals in the future. I am excited to see some new doors open for evangelists and pastors to work

together. As Evangelism Director, I challenge each pastor and his church to experience a genuine reviv‐

al and spiritual awakening for all involved. In the past 7 years our district has helped many churches

experience revivals in their churches. May the Lord con nue to bless our district.

The following is recommended:

1. That all elec ons be by plurality vote, and that all elec ons take place on one ballot, with the excep on of those that require a separate ballot.

2. That Advisory Board members be elected to three‐year terms, as provided by the Manual (paragraphs 203.14, 221).

3. That five ministerial and five lay members of the Advisory Board be elected as provided by the Manual (paragraph 203.14, 221).

4. That no incumbent may be re‐nominated for the Advisory Board if he/she will have served for eight consecu ve years at the me of the elec on. Any non‐incumbent may be nominated.

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT

It is an expecta on that each local church pay its denomina onal budgets in full each year. We, the Finance Commi ee, recommend the following:

That Eternal Investment Funds (District, SDMI, NYI, NMI, and Church Health) be 5.5 percent of charitable dona ons received, excluding missions giving (W.E.F., 10 percent approved mission specials, Designated Home Mission Projects, and New Church Starts) and Capital Improvement Projects (C.I.P.) that have prior approval of the District Advisory Board. Funds are to be sent to the Michigan District Office.

2. That the World Evangelism Fund for each local church be 5.5 percent, P&B 2.25 percent, and ONU 2.5 percent of all charitable dona ons received excluding missions giving (WEF and Approved Missions Giving). Each local church is encouraged to use the Global Ministries website, www.FundingtheMission.org, to assist in calcula ng the amounts due. WEF and Approved Missions Giving funds are to be sent to Global Treasury Services. ONU and P&B funds are to be sent to the Michigan District Office.

3. The Capital Improvement Project (CIP) shall be defined as “funds raised for the purpose of paying for the purchase, or principal on debt re rement, of church owned proper es, facili es, and the furniture, fixtures and equipment included in the original facility construc on project approved by the District Advisory Board.”

4. May 31 is the close of the church fiscal year, and anything received at the district office a er the first week of June will be applied to the new church year appor onments.

5. All churches give emphasis to our Manual (2009‐2013 edi on), page 57 par. 38.1, which states,

“Storehouse thing is a scriptural and prac cal performance of faithfully and regularly placing the the into that church to which the member belongs. Therefore, the financing of the church shall be based on the plan for storehouse thing, and the local church of the Nazarene shall be regarded by all of its people as the storehouse. All who are a part of the Church of the Nazarene are urged to contribute faithfully one‐tenth of all their increase as a minimum financial obliga on to the Lord and freewill offerings in addi on as God has prospered them for the support of the whole church, local, district, educa onal, and gen‐eral. The the, provided to the local Church of the Nazarene, shall be considered a priority over all other giving opportunity which God may lay upon the hearts of His faithful stew‐ards, in support of the whole church.”

6. The district treasurer shall communicate a progress report on payment of the District Unified Fund periodically to the churches.

7. The district treasurer shall forward/inform monthly to the SDMI, the NYI, and the NMI treas‐urers the amounts received at the District Office.

8. The SDMI, NYI, NMI, and the ILNC treasurers shall send monthly reports to the District Su‐perintendent and to the District Treasurer.

9. That the District Budget shall be established based on the projected amount of money that the district an cipates receiving (a.k.a. Zero Based Budge ng).

10. That any addi onal funds received above the projected amount will be directed to the Dis‐trict Account under the direc on of the District Finance Commi ee and the District Advisory Board.

22. That all monies received from the sale of property from officially closed churches, less en‐cumbrances, be turned over to the District Advisory Board to be used at their discre on in accordance with the 2009‐2013 Manual par. 106.2, p. 68.

23. That any group insurance plan and any necessary adjustments be le to the District Adviso‐ry Board.

24. That each church budget for the expenses of all of their delegates, including pastor and spouse and pastoral staff, for all district conven ons and ac vi es.

25. That each church budget or receive special offerings for Nazarene Bible College and Naza‐rene Theological Seminary and that the money be remi ed promptly to the appropriate office (see instruc on in General Informa on sec on of this district journal).

26. That each local church treasurer submit an itemized wri en report to the monthly mee ng of the local church board and disburse all money at the direc on of the church board (see 2009‐2013 Manual, par. 136 through 136.6, p. 90 and par. 129.21, p. 87).

27. That the local church is encouraged to invest funds only in federally insured banking ins ‐tu ons or their equivalent. Pastors shall not be a signatory on any church checking or savings account. That an annual audit/compila on of the books be conducted in accordance with the Manual (see 2009‐2013 Manual, par. 129.23 p. 87).

28. That each local church should use some type of accoun ng system, such as Quickbooks, and in doing so be compa ble with the District so ware.

29. Recognizing the full‐ me minister’s responsibility at re rement, we recommend that each pastor and church par cipate in the 403(b) of the general church.

30. That individuals be encouraged to remember the district and Indian Lake Nazarene Camp in their wills and estate planning.

I remember fondly the me at boy’s camp that I bowed my head and accepted Jesus as my personal savior. Just as clearly, I recall the point where He then performed a second of work of grace in my life. I had just turned 18 and was si ng in the second row, on the le side of O awa First Church of the Nazarene. I have no idea what Rev. Williams spoke about that day, because the Holy Spirit was speaking to me about the purity of my own heart and desires to serve Him. Oh, how I wanted to love Him with all of myself! My in‐ten ons had not been seen as showing this up to this point. But in those moments, my desires changed dras cally. At the close of the message, I stepped forward and knelt at the alter and declared to the Lord that my heart and life were fully His. All that could be and all that would be was offered to Him that day with no desires to ever take it back. I was converted on a Tuesday, May 2, 1972, at 2:00 in the a ernoon. The Lord caused me to make a dras c turn around! I realized not long a er that day that there was s ll a lot of “me” in the way. The flesh was winning out instead of spirituality. A er all, “I” had been in control for 24 years of my life. A er I was saved I wanted all of Jesus but I felt him now asking me, “when are you going to give me all of you?” It was then that I laid myself on the altar and totally surrendered my life to Christ. I knew the meaning of I Thessalonians 5:23‐24: May the God of peace himself sanc fy you wholly; and may your whole spirit, soul and body, be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he who calls you, who also will do it. I carried a lot of me and my own way for those 24 years, but then re‐ceived the fullness of His power. That power is perfec ng me daily as I depend on Him, un l I one day become as He is when I see Him face to face. I began my journey with Jesus in January of 1991. The Holy Spirit fi‐nally broke through and I felt the weight of my sin. I accepted the fact that Jesus gave Himself as a sacrifice for me and that He willingly took away the burden of my sin! Forgiveness is a beau ful thing. It wasn't un l the Fall of 1991 that I realized that Jesus had much more in store for me. Jesus wanted to set me apart for a life of free‐dom and fullness. It was at this me that I realized that just as Jesus gave himself for me, I was going to give my life to him as a living sacri‐fice. In that moment, Jesus sanc fied me. Jesus transformed my heart. I was and s ll am his. In the days since, Jesus has taken me on the sanc fica on journey of ever increasing freedom and fullness. Freedom from the penalty and bondage of sin and the fullness of life in the Spirit. The life of the sanc fied person is truly a life of abiding with my Jesus, my Savior, my Lord. Rev. My experience of en re sanc fica on took place when I was a sopho‐more at Olivet Nazarene University. I was sanc fied during a revival service when Chuck Millhuff was the evangelist at College Church. During the invita on I responded to God's call upon my heart and the Holy Spirit touched me with his sanc fying power and grace. There was no fanfare and I didn't have any great emo onal experience, but I knew that I had fully consecrated myself to God and that he had sanc‐fied me in that moment.

I thank God for the privilege of growing up in the Church of the Naza‐rene. I saw the life of holiness lived out in family and church family. This laid the groundwork for me as I was seeking God's will for my life. God has been with the Buchanan Church this past year! I had been through an emo onal illness that involved an extended hospital stay through mid‐July. The good news is that the church family worked together to keep things going. A er making a new commitment to Christ as the Savior and Redeem‐er of my life at the age of 15 while on a youth group trip to the Smokey Mountains, I felt the tug of God’s desire to do something deeper in my heart and life. While a freshman a ending Olivet Nazarene University, and during the spring revival services, I followed the promp ng of my heart to offer God everything—my heart, my me, my gi s and talents, as well as the plans and calling He had for my life. Not only was there a feel‐ing of freedom and love that I had never yet experienced in that work, but an overwhelming peace that whatever God had for my life, He would also be faithful to equip and empower me to accomplish it through His strength. Of course, since that me of God’s en rely sanc fying me, there has been a lot of growth and maturing through the years. My sanc fica on experience begins while I was s ll a ending a Luther‐an Church. I was reading God’s Word insa ably, wan ng to know God so that I may please him & live as much as possible without sinning. However, I found myself unable to always keep from sinning, as I un‐derstood sin at the me. My father was giving me books to read that talked about those who were struggling as I was, but who through the infilling & cleansing of the Holy Spirit were able to find victory over the power of sin. As I con nued to seek God for the power not to displease Him, I a ended a Nazarene camp mee ng on the Chicago Central District. At the service people asked to raise their hands if they knew they were saved—I did that! Then they were asked to raise their hand if they were sanc fied—I could not do that. So, I asked my father to go to the altar with me and pray because I knew this was what I needed if I was ever going to have the power to live a life pleasing to God the Father. I was a junior in high school when I accepted Jesus Christ. I had heard holiness preaching all my life, and I knew I needed to be sanc fied. I had a problem: I had mistakenly thought I was supposed to do the sanc fying. I was doing all of the ‘work’, and I also wanted to receive all of the credit. I followed Christ miserably for three years. I was ‘trying’ as hard as I could, and yet God was asking more of me. On New Year’s Eve I was frustrated‐‐ something had to change. I de‐tested the thought of enduring another year of spiritual poverty. It was my prac ce to annually make tenacious New Year’s resolu ons, but I had grown weary of trying so hard and feeling so defeated. That night I half‐complained, half‐prayed to God; ‘Lord, I can’t do this anymore. If you want more out of me, you are going to have do something.’ He did do something. He sanc fied me that night. He added ‘the sanc fying work of the Spirit (1 Thes. 2:13) to my belief in the truth. God’s strength flooded into my life at the moment I admi ed my ina‐bility to sanc fy myself. I accepted the Lord as my Savior at age 6 and as a youth, o en re‐sponded to altar calls at our local church and district youth camps. I felt the definite call to preach at age 16 and con nued to prepare my life for service at Olivet –s ll seeking with all my heart to be complete‐ly surrendered to the Lord. On May 24, 2013, I woke up very early a er having a very short night, filled with dreams. I dreamt about my brother, Paul. He is a Nazarene pastor in Vermont. In my dream, we were talking about growing old, and wondering what God had for us in these coming days. I am not sure if I was concerned about growing older, to as why I would dream such a dream, or if I just wanted to make sure that I le a Godly im‐pression upon those that God put in my path. I am also a hospice chaplain, and talk to a lot of people, that are either dying to live or living to die. I have had many opportuni es, to work with people, both in the church and as part of hospice to give purpose and mean‐ing, par cularly to those in crisis mes. This has been my experience of sanc fica on, to love people, regardless of circumstance, to pro‐vide hope, to all people that are dying to live. To show and mentor God’s love. To be Christ‐like, even in constant challenges. I am thank‐ful for being set apart for God’s will, and his holy purposes. I am doing my best living a life devoted, to God. I am very thankful, for the lead‐ership of the Holy Spirit that reminds me that being sanc fied also includes maintaining a constant rela onship with God, believing that all things have worked out for the good of them that love and serve him. One of my life versus is found in John 15:5 , which says; “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. In the fall of 1960 I was a bus kid a ending a Missionary Bap st Church in Indianapolis. One Sunday morning I walked to the front of the church to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. I was bap‐zed in that church a few months later. During my senior year of high

school I lived with my maternal grandmother and a ended the Naza‐rene church in Seymour, Indiana. The fall revival of 1965 found me at an altar seeking a deeper walk with God. Thursday evening of that week at about ten o'clock God began to talk to me as I lay in bed. In a “s ll, small voice" God called me into full‐ me ministry for His Church. I joined the Church of the Nazarene a few weeks later. The following January during a youth revival that Dr. Ted Lee was preaching I strug‐gled with a complete surrender to God. I had soon discovered in my life that becoming a preacher and becoming en rely sanc fied were not synonymous. Even though at that me I did not understand what God was up to in my life, I do know that I yielded my life to God com‐pletely and He did sanc fy my heart that winter evening. Since then I have had to say “Yes” to God many mes, including a sur‐render to become a missionary my freshman year at Olivet and my willingness to leave Southeast Asia and return home in 2006. I was at O.N.U. when it was called O.N.C. from1967 to 1972. In 1969 God told me that what I was professing I was not possessing. April 27, 1969 I went to the altar at Kankakee first church. I told the Lord that I was going to seek the Precious Holy Spirit un l He bore witness to me that I was His and He was mine. I was seeking for nearly a year. During that me I lived in the word. Reading John chapters 14‐17, Romans 6‐8 and 1 Corinthians 13 the Love chapter of the Bible. During my jour‐ney God showed me that He loved me. This changed my life forever! “That God loved me!” I told God that I would never preach for Him if He did not bear witness to me that He had sanc fied my heart and life. I also asked God to create a hunger in me for him. My journey to be sanc fied was the only prayer on my heart and mind during those days. I came to a place in my life that I told God that I wanted all He had for me more than I wanted to take a breath of fresh air without Him. When you get to this place with God you are almost there. February 22nd, 1970 in a Sunday night service at Kankakee first with Reverend Bill Varian preaching on the filling of the Holy Spirit, while standing during an altar call, I said to God “this is all I want!” and some how the the Spirit came and quickened my faith to take hold of His precious Holy Spirit. God came and bore witness to my heart that I was His and He was mine. For weeks His Spirit walked with me. From that day to this I have never been the same. I was 21 years old, newly married, we were pregnant with our first born and had just moved to Bourbonnais, Illinois. I was transferring in as a sophomore pastoral ministries major at Olivet. Being new to the Nazarene church, I had heard of holiness, a purified heart, the second work of grace, en re sanc fica on (whatever you prefer) and I could sense God’s sanc fying grace drawing me to something deeper in my faith walk. One day, in the prayer chapel at Olivet, I was praying specifically about this yearning to be wholly God’s. There was one other guy in the chapel and we started talking. It was Ben Pe , a Nazarene evange‐list. I was sharing with him my calling and desire to receive all God had for me; that’s when he shared he was holding revival services in town and preaching on en re sanc fica on that night! My wife and I went over that night and le completely different! I knew all service something was going to happen. At the altar call, it was as if God picked me up and took me down front. As I think about a current, living tes mony of the work of God’s sanc ‐fica on in my life, I think about the two vital theological, personal, and prac cal aspects of that work. First is the experience of heart cleansing that occurs as God makes room for a variety of new things He desires to do in me in order that I might be set apart for His purposes. This is daily. Each day the infec‐on of sin in a myriad of forms threatens to supplant the true King in

my heart and mind. Each day I offer myself up to the Lord to be fresh‐ly cleansed. There are moments where this has taken on a crisis form, where God has purged me in some way. Other mes have been expe‐rienced as a more gradual approach, like clay being shaped by the po er. Second is the filling of the Holy Spirit, God’s personal presence within me. Again, this is daily. Just as a fire needs to be stoked again and again in order for it to produce the heat and flame desired, so my heart needs to be renewed in God’s love and presence regularly, so that I might con nue to be the light He desires me to be. I became a follower of Jesus as a teenager. I sensed His invita on to turn over my sin‐stained life and I was converted and bap zed in a revival service. For the first me Jesus became personally real to me. In the years a er, I became occupied with the many concerns of life and my commitment to Jesus waned. I married Brenda (a Nazarene), and as our growing family became involved in the church I heard about the sanc fied life for the first me, and I was mee ng sanc fied people. I gained a growing awareness and understanding about holi‐ness and I came to realize this was the need in my life. I experienced several weeks of troubling “spiritual discontent” and searching as God was dealing with me. I felt the pull of God on my heart and a struggle within myself, a ba le between my will and God’s will. One day, in a private me of prayer and searching, the Lord prompted me, “Will you serve me?” Three mes he asked the ques on. Twice my answer had been weak and condi onal. The third me he asked, my answer became, “Whatever that might mean, I will serve you.” I yielded myself to His will completely. Instantly the Spirit of God came and cleansed my doub ng and self‐willed heart and filled me with His Spirit and with love. He has purified my intensions and given me a heart that desires His righteousness. Many mes at church and teen camps I prayed for forgiveness and sanc fica on. I had these two problems though: I would yield to cer‐tain tempta ons some mes and I struggled to trust Him completely – con nually. When I took things into my own hands I would always end up breaking the Lord’s Heart, hur ng the best friend I ever had! In 1987, when I was sick of myself I really cried out to God both con‐fessing my sin and my inner need for complete cleansing. It was then that my life really changed, I surrendered again and choose to com‐pletely, with His powerful presence to trust and obey Him! My dad drove ten hours out of his way to pray with me that day. Later I learned my two sisters, mom and dad had been in deep intercession for me. God gave me victory and He has con nued to give me victory all these years later. Not too long a er those days I met my future wife, God had to do something within me first. God has blessed me with my wife and two sons who really love Jesus. I am so thankful for the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit, heart purity, and the love of Christ shed abroad in us and through our lives. I was born into a home where one could love God before knowing God, a place of care, provision and piety. Hearing the story of Calvary love at a tender age made me instantly aware how much li le boys needed Jesus and that right standing before God was only re‐ceived through faith in God’s saving grace through His Son. That ini al encounter of joy created a desire for more of its generous Giver. As a boy the greatest compliment anyone could give me was “You’re so much like your father.” He reached out to people much like Jesus did – sacrificially, tenderly and honestly, and I so wanted to be like that. That quest for earthly imita on found its counterpart in a transcendent one, but I found myself desperately unlike Him as re‐vealed in His Son! Christ calls us to a life of inner‐rest through consecrated faith in Him. Such an experience eluded my grasp. My bese ng sin was an inner disorder, a self‐preoccupa on made worse by the perfec onist defeat that le me feeling inadequate. God’s gracious turning point came to me at a seminary chapel service. The preacher, Dr. Melvin McCullough, stated that the maturity of a person can o en be measured by the gi s they ask for. Jesus iden‐fied the believer’s highest request: “If you then, being evil, know how

to give good gi s to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Lk 11:13)?” The Lord whispered to me, “This is for you, Joe. You don’t need all the lesser gi s. You just need Me.” I knelt and asked my Father for His Spirit. By His grace, my Father granted me the cry of my heart and He is the One who is making me like Himself.

What a privilege to serve as Elder in the Church of the Nazarene. I can s ll remember the first day we walked into the Church of the Naza‐rene. It was a church filled with joy! When I learned their joy came from sanc fica on, I wanted it, too, but became stuck trying to conse‐crate a future when I s ll didn’t know what it contained! Then I heard Evangelist Bob Taylor at Indian Lake Nazarene Camp. Bob helped me make sense of consecra ng my future by laying his hanky on the altar and calling it ‘the future bundle.’ The ques on wasn’t if He could, but would I be willing to give my unknown future bundle to God, too? Later, en re sanc fica on was preached again and the altar opened. In an emo onal, yet purposeful decision I went forward and gave God my past, my present, and my unknown future. I held back nothing! As the hymnist wrote, “I was hungry for the blessing; My poor soul‐ it must be fed”. While it wasn’t like ‘sparks from smi en steel,’ God cleansed me and filled me with the Holy Spirit as I earnestly prayed! It pays to be able to live a free life from the power of sin, trust me. I was there. The desire for a higher life was always mine. As a li le boy I remember I always wondered how is it possible for a sinner to go to Heaven with sins in his heart? I have always been taught that the wages of sin is death. I found the answer in 1995. All came to light that night when Pastor Coffey came and preached a weekend revival for us at Grand Rapids First Church. Pastor Coffey made it plain clear to me that God’s desire for me was to live a free and a full lovely life for Him and for Him alone. I was driving that night; I was delivering news papers to some of my customers and all of a sudden I started weeping. I felt so guilty and shameful before God. So frustrated with my lack of power to sa sfy God, I found myself broken and hopeless. It was like I tried my best but my best was never enough. I had always been stricken down by the enemy. As I wept that night, I remember how God’s Spirit ministered to me. In the midst of my watery eyes the Spirit of God reminded me of the message I’ve heard the week previ‐ous from Pastor Coffey. That revela on brought me a sudden peace. It revealed to me that God wanted me to live a new life; one that He would make of me. He would cleanse me from that enemy’s s gma. He would free me and I would be released from the power of sin. He made that for me that night. A er that I have been enjoying a new life from the old’s. Now I know I am saved. I have been cleansed. I was born and raised in a Chris an home. My father led me to the Lord at the age of six. My life has not been the same since Jesus Christ became Lord of my life. Growing up in the Bap st church I never knew of the, 'second crisis of faith.' It was during a fall revival service in 1992 that the Lord spoke to me, "Is your all on the altar?" It was then and there at the altar that I knelt and surrendered all that I had and was. The Lord took control of my en re life. I had felt the call to ministry during my high school years but chose instead to pursue my educa onal goals. My wife and I returned to Sparta a er my gradua on. We found a local Nazarene church where the people were warm and friendly. As I served in the local church The call to ministry got stronger and stronger. During that revival service, I became totally sanc fied. The Lord's call on my life became clear and powerful. The journey of faith and obedience has since taken my family and I to many different loca‐ons, but s ll following the same Good Shepherd.

The chorus “I Love Him Be er Every Day” describes my maturing rela‐onship with Christ. Sanc fica on is a growing process in which it

seems the Holy Spirit has li le difficulty in con nually finding those areas of my life that need cleansing, reviving and equipping. Note, I didn’t say maintaining; because maintenance is the an thesis to the process of sanc fica on. What a joy it is that these areas of submission to Christ come with far less hesita on that in my earlier years of walking with Him. In what many may be tempted to describe as the ‘fall phase’ of my ministry, remember the leaves in fall are at their most brilliant color, His love is daily more enriching and fulfilling. Studying, preaching and caring for God’s children are more exci ng very day. Loving him be er every day is more than a chorus, or phrase, it de‐scribes my in mate spiritual journey with Christ, and my constant prayer is that my a tude, my speech and my ac ons will shine forth that love. I knew from the me I was a child that I was called to preach the gos‐pel; in fact I preached my very first sermon to the neighborhood kids when I was eight years old. However like many young people I le the Lord and did my own thing. God is faithful and May the 5th 1983 he wonderfully saved me. I wouldn’t be for another four years in a Sunday evening service when I gave all of myself to the Lord. That evening God sanc fied me and affirmed that call in my life that he had started so many years before to pastor and to preach. Through the years because of the faithful‐ness of God I have con nued to grow in the grace of salva on and in the power of sanc fica on. Today God has given me the privilege to use my gi s to preach and pastor a wonderful community of believers at the Hillsdale Church of the Nazarene. This year we celebrate 75 years of ministry to the com‐munity of Hillsdale. Praise the Lord who is always faithful. God s ll moves! Having been raised in the Nazarene Church and im‐mersed in our culture of camp mee ngs and revival services, I thought I had experienced all that God is and does in His church. Then in a revival service I witnessed the moving of God’s Spirit upon His church in a powerful way. So great was His presence in that ser‐vice that the en re congrega on fell on their face before Him. It was at this powerful demonstra on of God’s willingness to move upon His people that I pleaded with our Holy God to set me free from the tyr‐anny of secret sin and selfishness. God heard my prayer and cleansed my heart of its plaguing carnality and filled me with a devotement to God I had never known before. My heart exploded with love for God and for His church. Within a ma er of days I heard His call to leave my teaching profes‐sion and give myself en rely to the work of building His church. The year was 1988. We had recently finished an extensive addi on on our home. David had just begun a new job, and the idea that I should stay home and care for my children kept popping into my mind. I loved my job, made good money, was career driven, and with the uncertainty of my husband’s new posi on, and the extra cost of the addi on, this idea couldn’t be from God. Yet the nudging con nued. One evening, I went into our bedroom, got down on my knees and explained to God all the reasons I could not quit my job. I argued, “Lord, I need to work so our kids can go college. (They were one, three and eight at the me.) “Lord, I don’t think I can handle being home with the kids all day long.” “Lord, what if David’s new job doesn’t work out?” With every argument, with every plea I heard God say “will you trust me?” Through tears I said, “Yes Lord, I want to trust you”. I accepted Christ a few days before my 21st birthday during a revival service at Swartz Creek Church of the Nazarene. A few months later I sensed that God was calling me to some rela onship that was deeper. I surrendered my will with the last holdout being Lord I will go any‐where and do anything except going to a big city. Before I stood up even that was given to the Lord. Years later I found myself and family with 2 young children in Sofia Bulgaria a city of over 1 million people. God proved to me that as long as I am walking in His will for my life He will take care of me. God has con nued to take care of me and my family as we seek to follow His will for our life. Years a er my complete surrender I am s ll learning and growing in this rela onship with God. Today my story is s ll being wri en. God con nues to reveal Himself to me. I shared with the Creden als Board during my ordina on interview this year about my conversion and sanc fying experiences, rela ng that I was a first genera on believer and that I didn’t have firm calen‐dar dates for either of those experiences‐at the me, not knowing that you were supposed to keep track of such things. But the important thing, of course, is that they happened. A er read‐ing the Bible (a gi from a friend), I was wonderfully saved at home. A er discovering and reading John Wesley in Bible school, I surren‐dered my life totally to Jesus. What immerged from my study of Wes‐ley and, more importantly, my study of scripture, was an understand‐ing of this consistent pa ern of rela onship with God and the conse‐quent call and deepening of that rela onship with him. That clear, biblical pa ern convinced me of the truth about sanc fica on. Again, I couldn’t tell you a specific date, but what I can tell you about, and tes fy to, is the experience: the experience of a deep walk (and ever deepening) with Christ; the experience of an extraordinary call and purpose; the experience of real freedom and real hope; the expe‐rience of an ever deepening sense of assurance; and the amazing cer‐tainty and experience of God’s love. I came to faith as a child. I grew up in the Church of the Nazarene and was raised by godly parents. I invited Jesus into my life one evening during family devo ons. As I grew, I heard preachers and my parents talk about sanc fica on. Though I had no understanding of what that meant, I wanted all that God had for me. When I was fourteen years old I came to believe that a person must give her/himself en rely to God. I remember having conversa ons with my father as I tried to understand what that meant. But there was no hesitancy on my part. I wanted my whole being to belong to God, so I gladly—as best I could understand it—gave myself en rely to Him. In the days and years that followed I began to understand that this wasn’t simply something that I had done. God did a work in me. My freshman and sophomore years of college were forma ve in my understanding of what it means to be commi ed to Christ and to be led by His Spirit. For me there was no Damascus Road experience. In the myriad of children’s church, children’s camp, youth group, youth camp, revivals, and regular church services, Christ worked His sanc fying grace in me. At first it seemed strange to not know the date and me, but men like Doug McVay, William Greathouse, Dan Spross and Steve Green helped me to understand that the proof of the experience is in the life that is lived, not solely at a moment in me. At one of those many moments the will of God was accomplished in me; my sanc fica on. S ll not exactly sure which one, but when He called me to full me ministry, I said Yes. When he asked me to become a Marriage and Family Therapist; I got the degree and began the prac ce, I said “Yes”. When he asked me to give up that prac ce and follow my wife to Bel‐fast, Northern Ireland; I said “Yes”. When He asked me to go back into pastoring with the great people of Cross Community Church; I said, Yes! And I have seen His sanc fying work at Cross Community. When God challenged people to give more, they said “Yes” and this year we finished in the black for the first me in a decade. When God reminded us that holiness calls us to love others, they responded with our first annual “living weekend” where we went and served people in our community who were in need of help. I a ended a revival with Rev. Elaine Pe t in Florida for Christmas break in December of 2000. I was in Florida for the week and in the revival every night. I was 22 years old. I felt God’s call to be made holy the second night of the revival. I went to the altar and prayed that night. Rev. Pe t told me to give God everything in my life. I struggled that night and all day the next day. I prayed all morning, “God, renew my mind! Renew my mind! And sanc fy my heart!” I began to pray that prayer every morning for the rest of the week un l the last morn‐ing. I was si ng outside my hotel all alone – and that’s the moment I believe God sanc fied me through and through! I was praying the same prayer: “God, renew my mind and sanc fy my heart! I die now to the old Chris! Your Way or no way!” That morning, God broke into my prayer me and sanc fied me holy. He gave me a por on of Scrip‐ture to confirm it. John chapter 21 where Jesus reinstates Peter. Verse 19, Jesus tells Peter: “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you went where you wanted and dressed yourself, but when you are mature, you will stretch out your hand and be led by the Holy Spirit to places you don’t normally go dressed in what you don’t normally wear. Then it says: “Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Pe‐ter would die to glorify God. Then He said to him, ‘Follow me’. That passage tells me, “Chris, when you were a young Chris an, you lived your faith your own way.” “But now that you are holy, you will be led around by my Spirit and live my way. I want to first give thanks to God for his con nued blessings in our lives and the lives of those in the church. I also want to give him praise for the shedding of his blood and the gi of not only a heavenly home but the gi of en re sanc fica on in the present. When I was eighteen, the only thing I was commi ed to was the two so ball teams I was on, the Assemblies of God and the Nazarene Church. I began to spend more me with the Nazarene youth group. But my life was empty and direc onless. That fall, my friend and I decided to go to the county wide crusades in the high school gymnasium, and it was there that I felt the Holy Spirit tugging at my heart and I made what seemed like a long walk to the front of the stage and gave my heart to the Lord. But even then I knew there was something more. Rev. Lewis preached on en re sanc fica on and I knew what I needed. I have watched in amazement as Lansing First Church has experienced a tremendous transforma on in the past sixteen plus months. The change has been both spiritual and physical. As I now reflect on the change, I am reminded that approximately ten‐years ago I too experienced a life changing moment, when a er re‐ceiving a cancer diagnosis, the Holy Spirit came upon me in a mighty and powerful way. This moment happened to be while I was driving 60 mph on the New Jersey Parkway and thus I took the first exit I could and pulled over, just as I began to sob. Though I was saved and had been serving him over the past 30‐years in various layman capaci es, the Holy Spirit made it clear that He wanted to do a greater work in me. It was at that moment I sensed a desire to decide right then that I must give God all of me; even my 30‐plus year career in the US Army and to serve Him in a full me ministry, preaching the Word and shep‐herding others. I would like to share the moment when I experienced the second work of God’s grace. It occurred on a Wednesday night in the pas‐tor’s study when I was twelve. I was going through the ar cles of faith and we started discussing en re sanc fica on. We read from 1 Peter 1:15 ‐ 16, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is wri en: “Be holy, because I am holy.” I asked how can we do this with the con‐stant struggle of sin in my life. I learned about the cleansing of the original sin, sinful desire in all of us, but how that can be removed by God’s grace. At that moment I prayed to God, surrendering all to Him and calling on the Holy Spirit to remove the original sin. I felt the cleansing hap‐pening and then started running to God and desiring Him. There have been a number of mes in life that I have submi ed my will to God and asked Him to cleanse me. My journey toward sanc fi‐ca on began as a senior in high school in 1974 when I surrendered everything to God before going to the Interna onal Ins tute in Swit‐zerland. A clear call from being a business and accoun ng major, switching into the ministry track at Mid‐America in January of 1976 was another defining moment. But one of the key sanc fying mo‐ments of God was the morning of September 19, 1980. It was four months before beginning our first church plant and pastorate in Wa‐terloo, Iowa. The event was a seminary chapel service and Bob Crab‐tree was speaking. At first I felt I probably wouldn’t get much out of it. I had been having some struggles with judgmental a tudes to‐ward some of the other students. I observed a lack of heart and lack of discipline for God’s work. It was my observa on a lot of them had a long way to go! I could see lots of sawdust specks in others but I had‐n’t yet discovered the plank in my own eye (Ma hew 7:3). I felt cocky, confident and cri cal. Dr. Crabtree began reading Philippians 2:3‐5. I didn’t hear another word Dr. Crabtree said. God and I were having a private conversa on. Jesus was poin ng out the a tude problems and character adjustments I needed to make. The longer I sat there in that seminary pew, the worse I felt. At the close, I stood up in front of 200 of my peers and knelt weeping at the seminary al‐tar. It was a glorious morning! Honesty with Jesus brought real peace and victory and started a life‐long journey of always seeking to obey the promp ngs of the sanc fying Spirit. Dr. Larry McKain Lead Pastor

I have been in the Church of the Nazarene my en re life and have been a Chris an for most of my life. From an early age I was com‐mi ed to following Jesus. As I went through high school I was com‐mi ed to serving God in almost every area of my life. Then, while a ending a camp between my junior and senior years of high school, God began calling me to be a pastor. That was the one area of my life that I did not want to let go of. But, in a moment of total surrender, I commi ed to trust in God with all of my life no ma er what that might bring. In that moment I was en rely sanc fied and God began to do a whole new work in me. God con nues to mold and shape me, and the last couple of years have been some of the best years of my life. I love God dearly, and I am incredibly blessed to be able to serve Him with all of my life.

Growing up as a pastor’s kid in a conserva ve holiness church I experienced churches that believed in sanc fica on as a second definite work, but in a very real sense grace was missing. Much of the proof of holiness was based on external characteris cs. Then a man named Stanley Cli on came into my life and communicated to me a message of grace. As a fi een year old I determined that I had to have as much of the Holy Spirit in my life as He would give me. I wore a path in the center aisle to the altar. As I was kneel‐ing there one service like so many others I remember feeling im‐pressed that I shouldn’t come to the altar again. “If you really want this blessing ask for it at home when no one is watching,” was the message that God spoke to me. The next day a er school I went to my room and began ask‐ing God to purify my heart. I had never prayed so honestly and with such hunger. It wasn’t long before the assurance of God’s Spirit came. The Holy Spirit con nues to work in my life. Two years ago, I was mee ng with two dear men, and as the Scripture and the prayers opened up I was able to see that there were s ll some things I had unknowingly held on to. I broke through these vows that the enemy had used to hog e me as a dad, a pastor and a ci zen of my commu‐nity and there it was again, that same assurance that God’s Spirit was with me, filling me more and more. I belong to Jesus and Jesus belongs to me. I am so thankful

that He allows us the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives so we

have sweet communion with God right here, right now and forever.

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may par cipate in the divine na‐ture, having escaped the corrup on in the world caused by evil de‐sires.” 2 Peter 1:3‐4. This passage brings me great comfort, while at the same me I can’t wrap my mind around the reality that through Christ Jesus, God has chosen to allow believers like me to par cipate in the divine nature. It is this type of unbelievable love that God has blessed us with that calls me to con nually say yes to God’s best in my life. I believe this is what God has set me apart for, and it mo ‐vates and empowers me to con nually surrender everything to Him. Is this a one me event for me or a con nual one? Yes. I am con‐vinced that God can so fill my heart with his divine love, that I can choose to allow His love to flow through me in each and every situa‐on.

I like the story that Dr. Warrick once shared while defining en re sanc fica on. He told of a chaplain who asked a young man, “If I could rip your heart open would I see an eternal yes?” I answer a re‐sounding yes to that same ques on! I am on the journey, and Christ has filled my heart with His love, and con nues to do the same through the Holy Spirit, and I celebrate His grace in my heart and life as I con nue to say yes to his will and purpose for my life! I had the wonderful privilege of being raised in a godly home, with parents who loved the Lord. I can s ll remember the day I gave my life Jesus at the age of four and half years of age. I was raised in a sister holiness denomina on. I don’t ever remember hearing a message on en re‐sanc fica on un l our family moved and we started to a end the Church of the Nazarene. It was while I was in the Marine Corp at the Oceanside Church of the Nazarene in California that I can remember really hearing for the first me a message on en re‐sanc fica on. When I heard about how the

Holy Spirit wants to come into our lives in His fullness and cleanse the carnal nature (deprived nature), that which causes us to have a bent towards what is wrong, I knew I needed that. So immediately a er the preaching was done I went to the altar and asked Holy Spirit to fill me and cleanse me of the old carnal nature. He came in His fullness and sanc fied me when I consecrated my life and my all to Him. Since that day I have discovered my Chris an walk is a journey. Approximately 12 years ago, my journey with Christ started. It started with small town Nazarene church in Chesaning Michigan. I a ended this church for about six months, then became a member along with my new bride, Diane. We were married on a Saturday, then, the next day we became members of the church. A er about a year, both Diane and I became board members. Approxi‐mately a er a year to a year and a half serving as board members, my pastor asked if I would be interested in serving as the teen leader. I had no interest in being a team leader, at that me. Our church prayed and looked for a team leader for about a year. No one came forward. One day, as I was pouring myself a cup of coffee at home, the Lord spoke to my heart and I actually spoke out loud saying “Okay, I’ll do it.” I immediately called up my pastor and told him that I would be willing to lead the teens. I spoke to my wife and she agreed to assist. I felt it would be best to have a husband‐and‐wife role model for the teens. As me progressed, the Lord opened doors for me and led me into the ministry. I first became a local licensed Minister for the church. Then, my ministry (the Lord’s ministry) progressed into me star ng the elder track. Eventually, I a ained my first District license during the district assembly of 2010. My wife and I have been serving the Lord for over 12 years now and we will con nue to serve him for all eternity. The ministry of a Na ve American popula on on a Federal Reserva on with hundreds of people, with so many challenges, is some mes overwhelming. Na ve American ministry in a close knit community has a higher instance of alcoholism, drug abuse, dysfunc‐onal families, jail, and prison ministry more than most communi es.

The Lord has helped me in this past year to minister to several Tribal members on their death bed, and who accepted the Lord, be‐fore passing. It made a huge impact on their loved ones, many who didn’t think they could be saved.

We’ve had miracles too this past year. A Na ve family called to ask if I could come and pray with their 24 year old daughter, named Heaven, who laid in a coma for four days. I went to the hospital, prayed and anointed her, and she woke up. Her liver was so diseased from alcohol and heroin; the hospital said they could do no more. God brought her out of the coma, she began to get be er, and eventually she went home and was doing well.

The voice of holiness shall never be silent to a dark world if ministries walk with clean hands and pure hearts. Preaching holiness, Godliness, and being a living example and spokesman, a straight shooter, and telling them like it is. This is our focus for our Indian peo‐ple, to come out of sinful darkness into the light of a risen Savior. May our light con nue to shine is the darkness within our community. Praise the Lord! Rev. My heart was so ened in the fall of 1994. God had been close by my side but something new was happening. A fire was being churned inside. I had heard the call to full me ministry but had never realized the call was specifically mine. On a retreat, that fall that I yielded. I embraced the call to full me ministry. I became more concerned with my present rela onship with God than anything else. I experienced the overwhelming power of God’s Holy Spirit as I gave all of myself and He filled all that was given to Him. At that point my en re heart and will were surrendered to God’s will. I believe this to be the point when I was en rely sanc ‐fied. Life changes when a person is filled with the Holy Spirit in every area of that persons life. And I am all the be er because of that. I was flying away from Crea ve Access Country #2, where I had been a missionary volunteer shortly a er 9/11. God gave me opportuni‐es to teach and witness in Kyrgyzstan and I couldn’t understand why

God’s plan for me included leaving this country I had grown to love. Clearly I heard God say to me, “You always said that I was all you ever needed. Were you lying?” That was the moment I obeyed my call to preach I received at age 15 and prepare at Nazarene Theological Sem‐inary. I surrendered completely to my expecta ons for life and gave God control. Everyday I desperately call out to my God to mold me into a broken vessel He can use. “Fine, if you really want me to be in the ministry then you need to have the preacher say so from the pulpit. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard her say these words, “It is during this sermon that many people have been called to be preachers under my ministry.” I knew right there and then that I needed to surrender to God. As a 3rd grade boy I first confessed sin. As a teenager, a er a rock concert, I first surrendered my will. And the Lord con nues to prove trustworthy. At the torch ceremony at Nazarene Bible College, my story was and s ll is: All the talents I have I have laid at Thy feet. Thy approval shall be my reward. Be my store great or small, I surrender it all. To my wonderful, wonderful Lord. Daily surrenders to the Spirit’s leading create a spiritual momentum that keeps me enjoying the leadership of the Lord. It’s a thrill of a life me to serve Jesus with friends. I was five years old when my mom and dad began a ending the Highland Church of the Nazarene on the Eastern Michigan Dis‐trict. I clearly remember kneeling at the altar early in my life and ask‐ing Jesus to forgive me of my sins; however, for a long me I failed to catch on to the idea that my heart needed to experience this thing we call “sanc fica on”. It certainly was not for lack of trips to the altar in that old white framed building—I did that plenty! Each trip I really believe that I touched the heart of God and He helped me to deal with some of the issues in my life. S ll I con nued to struggle with what it meant to be sanc fied. I was in high school when my folks took me to a local camp

mee ng. I wasn’t feeling any “tug” in my heart to move toward the

altar when I no ced somebody literally tugging at my sleeve. I’ve nev‐

er known why that lady chose to touch me or talk to me that night,

except for the fact that God’s Holy Spirit must have encouraged her to

do so. Her words were clear and cut to the chase: “Don’t you want to

go to the altar?” I nearly responded with a rebellious “no”. Then sud‐

denly moving out of my seat seemed like the right thing to do. Even

a er kneeling down, I wasn’t quite sure why I was there. Someone

asked me what I wanted God to do for me that night and I said, “I

need to be sanc fied!” I’m not sure why I said it but the words were

out, and that opened the gate for God to do a marvelous work in my

heart. Praise God, He s ll warms my heart today!

I had my hopes set on going to the public school and playing basketball. There was no guarantee sports would even be offered in this new Chris an school. God called on me to decide whether I was going to follow Him or my own desires. I vividly remember during this me coming home a er engaging in sinful behavior, desperately sick of being in spiritual victory one day and in defeat the next. Kneeling at my bedside, I wres‐tled with God. Slowly I released everything in my life over to His control. My life radically changed. I went from being an average student to gradua ng number one in that Chris an high school. Never mind that there were only ten students in my gradua ng class, this was a major change for me! I went from a life without much purpose to having a burning pas‐sion to serve Christ and do my best in everything. In an age of skep cism and cri cism about the relevance of Chris anity, I am grateful to be part of a church that teaches, preaches, and lives holiness as an authen c life experience and not as an abstract, una ainable theological construct. Our cul‐ture is begging for authen city and only heart holiness will ever produce that. I first became aware of the necessity of a deeper work of grace in my life at the age of 13. I had first said “yes” to Jesus at the age of 5 but became aware that I s ll wanted my own way so much of the me. But at the age of 13, how could I know all the “yeses” that were yet to come in my life? Surrendering my 13 year‐old‐self to Jesus was a life‐changing experience. But then I’ve had to surrender my 21 year‐old‐self, and my 29 year‐old‐self, and my 37 year‐old self. (We’ll stop coun ng there!) Every year, in fact every day, there are new places to be surrendered and cleansed. I have experienced two clear works of grace in my life and then subsequent thousands. I have been sanc fied, I am being sanc fied, and I will be sanc ‐fied! One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Corinthians 5:21 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might be‐come the righteousness of God.” What a trade! Rev. Marlene J. I grew up in a Nazarene parsonage home in Southern Ohio. My par‐ents not only professed to en re sanc fica on, but as far as I could see, lived the life of holiness. I remember the struggles of my teenage years. I felt the call to preach and surrendered to that call immediately, yet I failed to fully consecrate my life to the Lord. Many mes, I went to the altar and prayed that God would sanc fy me, only to find myself con nuing a life of divided loyal es. As I look back, I realize that I had s ll not come to an end of myself to fully embrace what God wanted to do in my life. Over me, the chal‐lenges and struggles of life began to humble me and I sensed my des‐perate need for more of Jesus. One day when I was alone I felt the gentle touch of the Spirit. In a very simple way there came an assurance that I was completely His. It was pure grace, for I was not even praying for a touch from God. I remember the inner turmoil between wan ng to give God my all and yet thinking what I had to give was worthless. Could God even care? Certainly I was unlovable and unlikeable. I had nothing God could possible need or want. Years later in reading Dr. James Hamilton's book '' The Faces of God'', he described a misinformed personal concept of God he developed in childhood. Based on his upbringing, he saw God as a God who was judgmental and out to get you as soon as you failed. The good that you do could never be good enough. But he learned differently. That was me! I had the same feelings. Somehow I could have a God who could die on a cross, forgive my sins but not love me? I finally realized it wasn't God's fault, but mine! What a miserable religion I had. What a dysfunc onal rela onship with God I was in. I lived a cycle of DEFEAT. With a story too long to tell, I came to a crisis of all crises and knew I could not con nue. I knelt at my bed for hours asking God to end this miserable life!!! Some me in the night, the presence of God became so real, I felt as if He knelt there with me. I can only describe what I felt as “pure love" and then, as the song says, "I rose, went forth, and followed Thee!" I had a new heart, a new life, a new confidence, new faithfulness and a new focus . Upon gradua on from Oakland University, I moved to Coldwater, Michigan to work in the golf industry. I was empty and searching. I located the Coldwater Church of the Nazarene and felt right at home there since I was born into the Nazarene way of life as a child. Within a few months I was serving as a youth sponsor and sensing God wanted to do more in my life. I took the students to a Cross‐Style Youth Conference in June of 2004 at ONU. I had been praying that God would speak to their hearts. But, God was God and He spoke to my heart, too. I found myself kneeling at the altar and praying for God to sanc fy me wholly. He answered my prayer and I rose from that altar no longer caring about trophies, golf tles or the game I once loved. I s ll love to play golf, but my desire to see souls come to know Jesus is much more important these days. “I waited pa ently for the Lord; and He inclined to me.” I thank the Lord for His grace. When I could not on my own turn to Him, God turned to me. He heard my cry, a cry of longing to be free from the bondages of sin. For fi een years I was enslaved by alcohol and cocaine. Sin took me places I did not want to go, and it kept me longer than I wanted to stay. The Lord who brought me up out of that horrible pit, out of the miry clay. “Therefore having been jus fied by faith,” I have peace with God, a peace that surpasses all understanding which can only come from the Lord. I had looked for peace and love in all the wrong places, but when the Lord set my feet upon a rock, He gave me His peace and love. You see, it was the love of Jesus that saved me. Not only are my feet set upon the rock but my steps are now becoming established. My heart no longer wants to sin because I know it grieves the Lord. I want to walk in newness of life, a life that is commi ed to loving the Lord with all my heart and loving my brother and sister as myself. The Lord has put a new song in my mouth for I walk by faith and not by sight. There came a “moment” by faith when I asked the Lord to take all of me, and fill me with His precious love. And he did. Praise to our God, today I’m walking in complete freedom in perfect love. “I have been crucified with Christ: It is no longer I who lives, but Christ lives in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who love me and gave Himself for me.” Rev. In 1974 God saved me from was ng my life with substance abuse and other destruc ve behaviors. At first, I thought my new life consisted of a ending church, praying, reading my Bible, and witnessing to others about their need to be born again. My pursuit of holiness was legalis c and ra onalis c. I a empted to rid myself of all that was profane and worldly while filling the voids with Chris an ac vity. Outwardly my life improved and I did grow in knowledge about the church and the Chris an faith. Inwardly however, my life was in turmoil as I wrestled against God for control. A er a year and half I could see that fear, pride, and the desire for se‐curity had more influence over me than did my love for God. His call for me to set aside my plans and prepare instead for an uncertain future in full me Chris an ministry revealed my need for genuine and full con‐secra on. I prayed with sorrow for my selfish and rebellious heart. I accepted the Lord's authority to choose whatever He wanted for me or from me. Then came perfect peace, cleansing, power, and joy! I was twenty‐one, just married, in the Army and sta oned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. My wife and I were not raised as Chris ans and had decid‐ed when we were married we would go to church. We went to church one Sunday morning. From that me on if we missed a service the pastor was at our door. This was all new to me but I soon understood I needed to be forgiven of my sins and I went to the altar and was saved. I had heard holiness preaching since we had been going to church and knew that something was missing in my life. During a revival I went to the altar seeking holiness. Men from the church came and prayed with me. I remember one man saying “Leave it all on the altar broth‐er.” I did just that and put my past, present and future all in God’s hands and he gave me the infilling that I had wanted. Growing up in a Nazarene home, I was blessed with parents who taught me each day to place my trust in Christ. Many mes I would feel the weight of my disobedience and come to my mother who would pray with me to seek God’s forgiveness. I do not remember a me when I did not want to follow Jesus. But as I grew to be a teen I

was torn in my spirit. My temper was o en out of control and I was powerless to deal with it. The desire to fit in was overwhelming. Fi‐nally at a youth camp on the Central Ohio District I surrendered and Christ won the war. I would like to say there were no further skir‐mishes but in every failure there has been transforming grace to restore and establish my soul. Repeatedly he comes to reaffirm his Lordship in my life and each me I fall more in love with him. My hope is secure and my joy complete.

When asked for my tes mony, I will frequently (with tongue in cheek) say: “I was born Chris an!” I know you can’t be born a Chris an, but I was blessed to be born into a very Chris an household. Both my par‐ents were Chris ans and leaders in the Church. I was bap zed, as a baby, by my Grandfather, a minister and leader in the Church of the Nazarene; and my parents took the bap smal pledge seriously. I grew up in a Chris an atmosphere, knowing what it meant to be Chris an, and having excellent examples of living a life of holiness! I vividly remember at age 5, with the guidance of my father, acknowl‐edging and accep ng Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Later my father gave me the nudge I needed, during a revival, to go to the altar and pray for En re Sanc fica on! I was sixteen – And I began a new and exci ng chapter of my walk with Jesus Christ! And I learned real fast that my educa on, my spiritual growing up was not finished, in fact it had just begun! I was raised in a Chris an home and my father was a Pastor. At the age of eleven I received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. There were a lot of ups and downs in my life but I wanted to receive all God had for me. It was common for my father to preach on becoming sanc fied wholly and living a life of holiness. For some reason I didn’t seek the Lord in his completeness un l I was eighteen years old. While a ending a Camp mee ng service I sat near the back of the tabernacle. During that service the speaker spoke on living a life of holiness. God spoke to me and said it was me for me to become obedient to Him. I s ll remember stepping out into the aisle and mak‐ing my way to the front of the tabernacle. It seemed like I would nev‐er get there but I eventually made it. As I began to pray at the altar God met the need of my heart when I completely surrendered my life to Him. I believe He sanc fied me through and through. From that me on I was never the same again because God cleansed my heart

from the ‘sin principle’ and filled me with His Holy Spirit. There have been mes since this experience when I have felt the sweet presence of Jesus come and refill me. It is my prayer that I will always be sensi ve to his direc on and guidance for my life. It is a real joy to know God can and will en rely sanc fy us when we come to Him, completely surrender our lives to Him and then ask Him to cleanse us of the sin nature and fill us with his Holy Spirit. We live in a world that is ge ng more and more difficult to live in.

It seems like people are ge ng away from the Lord more and more

every year. As belief in God greatly diminishes in our society, so goes

morals and right living. I am thankful that even when it seems like the

world is against believers, we can s ll stand strong here in 2013.

With this in mind I gladly say this: I love the Lord with all my heart,

with all my soul and with all my strength. He is my help in the me of

storm and I feel privileged to serve Him in the capacity that I do. It is

my life’s goal to live a Holy life; a sanc fied life.

I am grateful that I was raised in a home where Jesus was LORD. When I was 7 years old, on a Sunday night, I went to the altar under convic on. That experience was the beginning of a very real rela on‐ship with the living God. However, when I was in junior High, I discov‐ered that Jesus and family were not important to my friends. When I was a freshman in High School I began to think that maybe I ought to try some of the things they were involved in. I never followed through on any of it though, because I began to see that they were not really happy. Finally, in the spring of my freshman year, I told the LORD that I was sorry for the desires for sinful ways and for things I had done wrong. There was a sense of freedom in my heart because all my guilt was gone and I had a peace that only comes from a genu‐ine rela onship with Jesus. In my junior year in high school, the asked me the ques on He asked Peter, “Do you love me more than these?” Each me He would bring “something” up on my life that meant a lot to me. Week a er week for 3 months He would parade “something” before me and I would wrestle with it and then surrender that “something” to Him. At the end of the three months our church was in revival with Evangelist Orval Po er. In the Friday night service, He was preaching and I could hardly wait ll he was done for him to open the altar as I realized that I come to a place of complete “emp ness of self” and that the LORD was ready to fill me with His “heart”. As I begin my report I must say it is a joy to serve Jesus. The songwrit‐er summed up my tes mony in the words of the song that says it best, “Jesus is the joy of living; He’s the King of life to me. Unto Him my all I’m giving, His forevermore to be. I will do what He commands me; anywhere He leads I’ll go. Jesus is the joy of living; He’s the dear‐est friend I know. Many years ago as a seventeen‐year‐old senior in High School, in the midst of a ten‐day revival, I knelt at the altar of the Owosso First Church of the Nazarene, and yielded my all to Christ. In that moment of surrender I was sanc fied. From that me on I have found Paul’s tes mony to be mine. I was on staff at Olivet Nazarene University in 1981. My wife and I were a ending Manteno Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Jim Palmer preached a series of messages on en re sanc fica on, and the Lord put me under convic on. I was shocked. I was a lifelong Nazarene. I had accepted the Lord at age 7. I had served several years as a pas‐tor. Surely, I thought, I must be sanc fied. Being obedient to the promp ng of the Lord I began to pray; read and search for all that God had for me. My searching intensified un l the Lord led me into a season of prayer on August 28th. Sleep was not possible. I sat in the living room of our apartment in the deepest mis‐ery, figh ng the final ba le of the will. At 2:00am I cried out to God in all sincerity, “Either sanc fy me or kill me. I can’t live another day like this!” In that instant a se ledness swept over my spirit and I knew the work was done. God gave great assurance of the work through increased fruit for my ministry. I was sanc fied when I was a freshman at Mount Vernon Nazarene College. I will never forget that experience. I walked into one of the evening services for our fall student revival. From the very first mo‐ment something felt different about the service. I know now, God was already speaking to me about what He wanted to do in my life. The music was great and the speaker was too...you can’t go wrong with Stephen Manley. When he was done speaking I knew God was drawing me to Himself. I went forward that night and surrendered my life to Him. I am thankful for the Church of the Nazarene and our belief in sanc fica on. That night God purified my heart. A long me ago, in the li le town of Sylmar, just outside of Los Ange‐les California, lived a li le boy. This li le boy was raised Chris an. His mother and father were saved in Michigan and moved to this land of stars and wonder, and took it seriously their commitment of raising their family, and especially this li le boy in holiness. Who, by the way, if you have not already guessed it, is me. Our whole family a ended worship every me the church doors were open at San Fernando Church of the Nazarene. It was not out of duty, or habit, but out of love for this Savior that they met in Michigan that this li le boy saw and gave his heart to the Lord. They taught their children the ways of our Lord and Savior. We were never dragged to church, but “loved” to church. It was as a child of four years old, being raised and taught holiness, that one night while lying in bed that I gave my everything to God. Then His presence came and I was filled with His Holy Spirit. I did not fully understand it then, but from that moment on, the Holy Spirit guided me, empowered me to live the holy life. And now, my life is commi ed to empower youth and children to live the life of holiness. If there ever was a need for a movement of His presence among the youth and children of our world it is now.
