MICHIGAN BuilderServing the children of the world | Michigan District | APRIL/MAY 2020 Issue

So how many of us still play or maybe ever have played video games or have ever been actively engaged with virtual reality? I imagine not that many of us, but the staff at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital’s Patient Technology Department sure have, in particular as a way to enhance the child’s hospital experience and most importantly as a way to support the healing process through the use of gaming as well as a wide

range of emerging technology platforms (see the links to video(s) below that tell this story)

This all started with your Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation providing seed funding and other support to C.S. Mott’s in order to try several different therapeutic gaming and technology programs that at the time were clearly out of the mainstream in terms of child and family life services.

governor || No substitute for books

“There is no substitute for books in the life of a child”, wisely stated by May Ellen Chase. Did you know, only 44% of Michigan’s third graders passed the English Language Arts portion of the M-Step standardized test (Maya Goodman). Or, did you know, that third graders in Michigan are the last in the nation for early literacy, and we’re one of the few states actually losing ground in third-grade reading levels (Stateside Staff). Now that we know the problem, how do we help solve it?

Michigan Kiwanis will attempt to break a Guinness Book of World Records this year for the most books donated. Our goal is approximately 250,000 books. We ask all Kiwanis clubs to find a way to participate that makes sense for your club. So maybe you do a book drive, hold a contest amongst classrooms, or donate financially. Perhaps, you can help with logistics. We have several storage options available, but with the large amount of books, and the geographical spread, we could use more places to store books until our record breaking count in August. Additionally, we need transportation to take the books from the storage locations to Flint in August.

You might be asking, where will all of the books go once the count is over? We have an application process in place where clubs, schools, organizations, etc. can request books. We will need to arrange to have all the books in Flint, Mi on August 21, 2020. On that same day, we plan to have a reading event where locals kids from Flint will come and have Kiwanians read to them. We will then send each child home with a collection of books.

Will this solve the literacy problem in Michigan? Absolutely not. But it will certainly help bring awareness and begin the snowball rolling. We have a committee that has begun working on this, we would LOVE more help! So if you’re interested in the behind the scenes planning, please get in touch with our committee Chairs Sharon and Carly at [email protected].

"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child"

Have a safe and happy holiday!

governor-elect || Tell everyone WHO WE ARE!!

tell everyone

WHO WE ARE!!Sometimes we are so busy working on a project

for Kiwanis we forget to let others know who we are.An instance of that was when the local YMCA was

putting out their brochure on cognitively impaired children programs and several of them were titled Kiwanis sponsored. Many parents had no idea who or what was Kiwanis.

No one knew the Kiwanis club had worked with the administrator at the YMCA and chose to sponsor several events that allowed the families of the cognitively impaired children to attend the events free.

We need to get the word out on WHO WE ARE!We need to shout out WE ARE KIWANIS!If you have been following Executive Director

Greg’s articles, he has listed several things we can do to let others know about Kiwanis.

I think one of the easiest is for members to wear Kiwanis branded items and then when others ask,

“What does Kiwanis on your shirt or jacket mean?” - you can explain it.

We need to also remember we are a global organization that is helping children around the world.

Do any of your neighbors and friends realize that Kiwanis has been eliminating neonatal tetanus around the world? Did any of you shout for joy and tell others that we just eliminated neo natal tetanus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is the 27th country we have helped eliminate it in.

We have been working on this for such a long time that many people forget how important it is to save the children from such an excruciating death.

We seem to forget to let others know who we are. So, let’s start shouting out

We Are Kiwanis!!!

governor-elect || WHY WE DO IT!

To complete my statements on WHO WE ARE , WHAT WE DO

and WHY WE DO IT.

Let me discuss why I volunteer.

So, think about why you belong to Kiwanis and why you like volunteering. Then have those answers ready when you are asked WHY YOU DO IT.

Besides telling others WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE DO tell them WHY WE DO IT.. And remember WE ARE KIWANIS

Many times I have been asked “Why do I do all the volunteering in the

various organizations?” My answer is always simple- I get a sense

of satisfaction and contentment in helping others. I like making a positive difference in the lives of others. It gives me a sense

of accomplishment and also helps with my psychological and physical health.

I have heard that this feel good feeling is actually shown to decrease your risk of

depression because it keeps you active and helps you make new, fulfilling connections.

According to an article in our Kiwanis magazine on June 1, 2019 are listed here.

Tell Everyone Tell Everyone why we

d♥ it!why we d♥ it!

• “Volunteering enhances social networks, which buffer people against stress and disease and ease pressure on health systems.

• Volunteering improves mental health and contributes to higher levels of happiness, self-esteem, self-worth and life satisfaction.

• Service organizations galvanize communities in times of need.

• Service organizations contribute to economic growth via community investment.

• Volunteering develops life skills and leadership abilities. • Volunteering increases awareness and understanding of

public issues.• Service-learning enhances understanding of diverse

cultures and communities, and binds people through shared experiences”

All the members were showing up, even old Bub.All the Kiwanians were full of good cheer,As they reflected on all they had done this past year. They had added some members which would help guaranteeThat their club would continue its legacy.Every guest who came to a meeting was greeted with a smile,So all the guests thought, “This club is worthwhile”.Their Signature project had come to fruitionWhich helped the club gain some fabulous recognition. They added a lot of hands-on service projects around the town and at their meetingsAs a result, the question of “Who is Kiwanis?” no longer had any meaning. They had worn Kiwanis items and talked about Kiwanis out loudBecause with all they had done, they were so proud.

They had sponsored a town hall meeting to find out where help was needed,Partnered with other groups to solve problems which had wildly succeeded. They even did some fundraising to help their administrative accountSo their officers and members could be trained and not left out.

The club was no longer what it once was,They had made some changes. They had created a buzz. With this buzz, the members had eliminated their frowns

PARTICIPATEThe definition of participate is to take or

have a part or share, as with others. What does that mean for us Kiwanians

and our clubs? That means we can step out of our club’s meetings, our community and our way of doing things, expand our horizons and share our ideas, fundraisers, service projects, best practices, what to avoid, etc.

I distinctly remember my first experience with this realization. Immediately after college I went to work for Sears in management. I had worked for them for nine years in Pontiac and Highland Park when I decided to go back to school at night to get my Masters in Business Administration from Oakland University. After several weeks of classes and talking with other students who worked at other companies, I was shocked to realize that there were other ways to

conduct business, treat customers and employees, other ways to get things done. I thought after nine years with Sears and not looking at other companies, that was the way to do things.

This could be the same experience with your club. Maybe some of your members

have suggested different things but that’s just old Joe or Jane or young Joe or Jane saying that. It’s sort of like your parents telling you something and you dismiss it, but when someone outside the family says the same thing, a lightbulb goes on.

The point is your club does not have to be an island in your community insulated from the rest of the Kiwanis world. There are ideas, help, support, people and wonderful opportunities to grow your club and yourself. Take advantage of

them and you will realize there is more than one way to run a Kiwanis club.

This issue will focus on the 2nd of the 4 words for 2020 collaborate | participate | network | innovate

USE IT, PUT INTO ACTION AND HAVE FUN WITH IT.

So how can you and your club participate more? Here are some ways. You can attend:

• Spring Divisionals (over now, but there will be more next year)

• Division Council meetings• Interclubs with any Kiwanis club in the

District or a Service Leadership club• Key Leader Sept 11-13• The Key Club Service Leadership Conference

or Circle K Convention next year• The Aktion Club Conference September 18-19• The Kiwanis International Convention in

Indianapolis June 17-21• Club Leadership Education in Troy-July 18,

Kalamazoo-July 25 or Grayling-August 1• The Michigan District Convention in Flint

August 20-23• You can also consider a District Leadership

position as a Lt. Governor or on a District Committee

In these unprecented times there are ways to participate with others besides being there in person. Be creative!

Foundation News || C.S. Mott - Breaking New Ground continued

And as you may be aware of from attending a C.S. Mott’s breakout session at last year’s Michigan District Convention in Ann Arbor, it all started in 2015 with Mott’s JJ Brouchard (Director of Patient Technology) building on the successes he had in bringing therapeutic play to pediatric oncology patients at the hospital and very rapidly building on that in bringing gaming systems to the entire hospital as his team grew from one to four staff. To this end and based on JJ’s understanding of the clinical as well as technology that would be required, he and his team reached out to the community for volunteers with expertise in these areas and were able to bring all of this to their patient’s bedside, to the hospital’s activity centers as well as integrate it into Mott’s physical and other therapy programs.

With all of this said, what are the benefits that The Kids derive from these gaming and virtual reality programs? There are several: (1) the encouragement of fine motor movement, problem solving and critical thinking (2) encouragement of cooperative game play, translating into greater socialization

and normalization (3) reduced isolation from family and friends outside of the hospital through online gaming, and perhaps most of all (4) using video gaming and virtual reality to help in a calming way get kids ready for what is coming up for them medically or even more simply help them to be

better able to ignore the IV in their arm or just fall asleep.

Finally, while C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is clearly the trailblazer nationally in all things that deal with therapeutic gaming and virtual reality, they continue to evolve and add new programs and therapies. One example of this is that they have expanded upon their ongoing outreach to the community by setting up a monthly “Arcade” whereby they invite different individuals from the outside community to come to Mott’s and test out a variety of different games and virtual reality technologies. The Patient Technology Staff , as part of Mott’s Child & Family Life Services Department , has also developed a relationship with a non-profit group named “Build Up Steam” who work with

For sure C.S. Mott’s digital endeavors are constantly evolving with technology and patient feedback, with their current major initiatives including the following:

• IN ROOM GAMING: With most hospital rooms being equipped with Xbox 360 Systems plus having mobile game carts available in each activity room.

• VOLUNTEER GAMERS & GAME DEVELOPERS: Volunteer play games with patients and help them build their own games, from the simple to the complex.

• LEGO AND ROBOTICS: Mott’s staff uses customized Lego Robotics to help keep patients’ minds busy during hospital stays while teaching basic coding and educational skills.

• VIRTUAL REALITY: This technology is used in order to help Mott’s kids experience a world that may sometimes feel out of reach. They can experience scuba diving, explore rain forests or even the feeling of running down the tunnel and onto the playing field at Michigan Stadium.

The Kids to develop Legos with small motors that connect to an iPad or iPhone thereby turning these Lego Creations into actual robots that scurry around doing one task after another…..amazing to say the least.

From the very beginning days of our Kiwanis Of Michigan Foundation we have partnered with C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital to help support Michigan’s hospitalized children and as a result we as Michigan Kiwanians have been instrumental in the development of these groundbreaking therapies. Additionally, last year we were able to add an additional 13th monthly payment to all of the Michigan children’s hospitals that we support given our effective stewardship of our members financial support. So let’s continue this tradition as we work with our hospital partners to make the lives of Michigan’s hospitalized children (and their families) just a little bit easier every single day.

Thank You for the support you have provided to your Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation (KMF) and to the support you will provide, it is so very much appreciated.

club news || Downriver Students Unite with Woodhaven Kiwanis to Fight Against Hunger

Hunger is a universal human problem, as threats of starvation often plague the lowest and poorest in our society on a daily basis; the problem even worsens as you exit the first world and witness the poverty of some of our world’s poorest areas in Asia and Africa, with children, in the time vital to their maturing into healthy and functioning adults, often experiencing the worst effects of hunger and malnourishment. In an attempt to fight against this scourge of poverty-induced hunger in the world’s poorest regions, in 1998 Dr. Donald E. Burwell founded the Kids Coalition Against Hunger (KCAH), which “coordinates packaging events throughout eastern half of the United States, feeding starving children around the world and in local communities”; simply put, the goal of Dr. Burwell in founding KCAH was to not only feed children around the world, but around the corner as well.

For over a decade, the Woodhaven Kiwanis Club has partnered with Dr. Burwell and the KCAH to bring Kids Against Hunger food-packing events to the Downriver community, partnering with students K-12 to help achieve the goal of

feeding the hungry. On February 1st, 2020, Woodhaven-Brownstown Kiwanis hosted their 12th annual Kids Against Hunger event at Bates Elementary School and saw great success, with a huge turnout of both Kiwanians and Downriver students. In total, over 500 students (including the players of the Woodhaven High School Varsity Hockey team, who helped coordinate many of the younger students) as well as nearly 30 Kiwanians (including three helpful Kiwanians from neighboring clubs) volunteered, contributed, and worked in Kids Against Hunger, packing a grand total of 34,797 meals for the needy and hungry. Although, of course, a great majority of the packed meals were boxed-up, ready to be shipped across the globe, twelve local food pantries also received boxes to distribute to the hungry here in our own communities.

The Woodhaven Kiwanis Club looks forward to not only next year’s event, but also the rest of its planned activities for the 2019-2020 year, remaining dedicated to the noble causes of charity and community service, both within their own community and outside of it.

club news || Signature Project

Every year the Grand Rapids Kiwanis Club helps local children have a Merry Christmas with gifts under the

tree. This is the Signature Project where all members get excited and participate. Working with our “Terrific Kids”

schools, the faculty nominates students that may not have any, or very few, presents to open on Christmas morning.

This year our club helped 32 families with a total of 105 children from four schools.

This year the need was critical for one family. A working mother with seven children were all sleeping on

the floor of their home because they had NO beds. Kiwanian, Pat Newcombe stepped in to find help

for the family. He contacted In the Image to find some household necessities for the family. He then called the Ashley Home Store with their Hope to Dream program

about getting some beds donated. After a few days the new beds arrived! Not only did they receive beds, but

sheets, pillows and seven stuffed animals. In the Image provided blankets and comforters.

Angeline McCall from Fox 17 did an amazing job covering the delivery and interacting with the family. Thanks to everyone that helped to make this a truly

Merry Christmas for this family.

10 KiwanisMichigan April/May 2020

Dear Kiwanis Leader:

We’re really excited about the 105th Annual Kiwanis International Convention, June 17-20, 2020, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Kiwanis is serious business with a playful spirit. So that's exactly what this convention will be — a union of grown-up commitment and childlike exuberance. We want Kiwanians to come to Indianapolis for fundraising, leadership and service project education with a playful twist.

You will be receiving via FedEx a shipment of convention catalogs to distribute to everyone who registered for your midyear conference. Please ensure each person gets one. You can place them on every seat before a general session or at every setting in the rooms of the first educational workshop. The catalog is an excellent overview of what attendees can expect at the convention.

Also enclosed in this packet is a flash drive with 25 short and fun videos that promote convention. Feel empowered to sprinkle them throughout your midyear sessions to add a little fun and levity to your training. We don’t recommend playing them back-to-back, as that could be monotonous. You can also use the videos throughout the next few months on your social media channels and other places you need quick bits of content.

You may be asked questions about the 2020 Kiwanis International Convention. Here are some of the frequently asked questions we’ve received and how to answer them:

WHAT’S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?This year’s convention will focus more than ever on educating members on how to be great leaders and

improve a club’s service to its community. Changes were made after a multi-year study of data and feedback from attendee surveys telling Kiwanis International what they want and expect from the convention.

Redesigned master classes will go deeper into leadership training and community service with subject- matter experts. These trained professionals will get you thinking and send you home with a to-do list designed to take your club to the next level.

WHY DOES THE CONVENTION COST MORE THIS YEAR?The registration packages include many extras, such as lunches and the Kiwanis Night at Victory Field

event. Additionally, new options let you personalize a convention experience that works best for you, your schedule and your budget. Come for the entire convention, the Kiwanis Education Conference — or just come for a day.

The Kiwanis Convention 3-Day value package is the best value, especially if purchased before April 10. It includes entrance to the Kiwanis Education Conference and the Kiwanis Annual Meeting. You'll have access to all general sessions, all keynote speakers and all non-ticketed events. You can also enter the Kiwanis World Showcase, enjoy lunch all three days and party at Thursday's Kiwanis Night at Victory Field.

WHEN ARE OPENING AND CLOSING SESSIONS?There are general sessions that start and end each day. Make sure you attend to get inspired by the

stories, experiences and performances from an all-star roster of speakers and entertainers that will reignite your fire to make a positive difference in your community.

WHY IS MY CLUB ALLOWED TO COVER CONVENTION EXPENSES FROM THE SERVICE ACCOUNT?Clubs have always been allowed to cover members’ registration and travel costs from their administrative

account. The Kiwanis Education Conference — part of the Kiwanis International convention —qualifies as an acceptable educational expense from the service account of the club.

COVERED EXPENSES CAN INCLUDE:

• Registration fees up to US. $299

• Hotel

• Airfare or mileage

• Meals

• Per diem

• Other expenses as determined by the club

The increased educational tracks offered at the 2020 Kiwanis International Convention meet the requirements of educational expenses allowed to be deducted from a club’s service account. If a club chooses, a fair practice could be to provide two-thirds of any reimbursement from the community service account and one-third from the administrative account for a member attending all three days.

Expenses related to a member attending only the Kiwanis Annual Meeting would not qualify for reimbursement from the community service account by Kiwanis standards. Clubs may continue to cover any portion of members’ convention expenses from their administrative account.

DO I HAVE TO STAY IN MY DISTRICT HOTEL?One of the benefits of being a Kiwanian: Preferred hotel rates at our select convention hotels. Staying

at the hotel assigned to your district gets you extra perks, such as a hotel in a prime location, upgrades as available and the opportunity to meet and mingle with Kiwanis members from your district and beyond. If you’d rather stay at a different hotel within the Kiwanis block, that’s OK. Just make sure you book your room through the link on this page to get the special rate and perks.

Over 400 wild game enthusiasts attended the 32nd Lenny “Nardo” Palermino Memorial Wild Game Dinner recently in February. A huge thank to our host the Century Banquet Center of Sterling Heights. What a fun and enjoyable evening. Whether your tastes were wild or mild, it was a night to remember. Club Member, Larry Lozo, chaired this successful event along with co-chair Mike Boyle. Many volunteers and club members were there to assist and make sure all attendees hand a great time.

WHAT A

WHAT A TEAM…the goal of the world record book drive committee is to promote literacy and awareness by putting books in circulation for children and adults. It’s a huge project, but with all club members being patient and working together, we can reach our goal.

Members from World Record Book Drive committee came from Allen Park, Canton, Dearborn, Detroit, Flint, Garden City, St. Clair Shores to meet face-to-face in February on a Saturday afternoon to review and implement the book collections of new and gently used books. Below, is the Michigan World Record Book Drive committee working together to help make this project a huge success. We welcome new members to join us.

DO YOU HAVE FUN AT YOUR CLUB MEETINGS? Check out Shorewood’s members having a boxing workout at their 7:30am meeting!
