5.Culture of discipline-
When you have this you
don’t need hierarchy, bu-
reaucracy and excessive
control. This gives you
magical alchemy of great
performance.
6.Technology Accelera-
tors- Good to great com-
panies are pioneers in
application of carefully
selected technologies.
7. The flywheel and doom
loop- These transfor-
mations never happened
in one sweep. Sustainable
transformation follows a
pattern of buildup and
breakthrough.
So to conclude from the
study of Jim Collins we
all should strive to great-
ness and should not settle
for just being GOOD

and Mach3. These prod-
ucts promised profits but
that was a secret develop-
ment. In 1991, Mockler
was on the cover of
Forbes.
What actually made these
companies good to great-
?
1. Level 5 leadership-
Good to great leaders
were self-effacing, quiet,
reserved and even shy.
These leaders seem to
have come from mars.
2. First who…then what-
Good to great leaders first
got the right people on
the bus, in the right seats
and then figured out
where to drive out.
3. Confront the brutal
facts (yet never loose
faith)-It is impossible to
make right decisions
without honest and dili-
gent efforts to determine
the truth of situation.
4. Hedgehog concept-
Good to great leaders
know just “one big thing”
and just stick to it. We
have to do what we are
We don’t have great gov-
ernments because we
have good ones. Few
people attain great lives,
in large part because it is
so easy to settle for a
good life. Vast majority
of companies never be-
come great precisely be-
cause they were quite
good and that was their
problem.
Jim Collins, with this
curiosity in his mind
started a five year quest
that yielded many in-
sights contrary to conven-
tional wisdoms.
Consider the case of
COLMAN MOCKLER,
CEO of Gillette from
1975-91. During his ten-
ure, Gillette faced three
attacks that threatened to
destroy the company.
Two attacks came as a
hostile take over bids
from REVLON. But
Mockler, for the reserved
man that he is, chose to
fight instead and won at
the end. Had the take
over been successful

BUSINESS LETTER
Mr. SANJAY BHANDARI,
COUNTRY HEAD,
DUFERCO INDIA
Q1. First of all we the students of M.I.B, JMI would like to thank you for your valuable contri-
bution to our monthly newsletter MIB’ytes “The flavour of Jamia”
Ans- Thank you, it’s a pleasure for me to contribute to this student venture of M.I.B, JMI.
Q2. To begin with which countries do you see as potential export markets for Indian Steel man-
ufacturers?
Ans. I feel the biggest market is India itself. You see that India is high on infrastructure, its steel
consumption is likely to increase in the future which presents a great opportunity for steel makers.
Apart from domestic market I also feel SAARC countries, Middle East and African countries also
presents a great opportunity for Indian steel makers.
Q3. How does a trading Company differ in its operations as compared to Export Wing of a
Manufacturing Company?
Ans-You see that trading company acts as both a selling and sourcing company, Secondly, I feel that
trading company can work with multiple partners; A trading company can work with various finan-
cial tools like trade financing, investment, which I think plays a very important role in augmenting its
business which is quite contradictory to how an export manufacturing firm will work.
Q4.Sir, do you feel that Letter of Credit is the best method of payment available right now?
Ans- Yes I feel that L/C is the best method of payment available right now. You see it ensures safety of
transaction by virtue of the fact that bank with adequate liquidity is involved in transaction on either
side.
Q5. Sir how has been your experience with containers and do you feel that loose or bundle pack-
ing is a more viable option to go for when we specifically talk about steel?
Ans- It depends…Look what I feel is that both the containers and loose/bundle packing have their
own role to play. Options out of the two should be selected on the basis of cargo size, safety and the
cost associated with it.
Q6.What all factors do you consider when you charter the Ship i.e. on what basis do you go for a
specific type of chartering?
Ans- When going for a specific type of chartering we usually take various factors into consideration
such as shipping line credentials, Voyage route other than various commercial transactions involved.
Q7.Which has been the most comfortable partner to trade with?
Ans- (Smiles) All of them have been comfortable to trade with but I would say that Public sector un-
dertakings have been the most comfortable to trade till now.
Q8.Sir, what role does speculation play in trading?
Ans- I would say that Speculation plays a greater role in trading. It plays a major role in commodities
like Billets, Pig Iron, and scrap iron. It plays a lesser role as far as the finished products are con-
cerned.
Q9.Duferco has been undergoing diversification in its business such as switching to real estate
and energy. Don’t you feel that it should stick to Steel business only?
Ans- These diversification ventures are related to steel in some way or the other and as far as the real
estate sector is concerned it works as a good investment tool.
Q10.Sir, you have a lot of experience in International Trade, what fascinates you most about
international trade?
Ans- (Laughs...) International trade gives the feel, challenge and excitement of being a global citizen.
The threshold at which India is today & for next level of growth, it offers a lot of opportunities for
both professional careers and entrepreneurship.
Q11.Lastly what advice would you like to give to MIB Students of Jamia Millia Islamia?
Ans- I would say that you should be always content rich. You should be solid on fundamen-
tals.“Hardwork is the only way to smart work”.

The psychology of management is the system thinking in exploring the number of forces constantly
working within modern organization. This intriguing examination explores how some forces are driving
the work place in one direction while other forces work to restrain that movement. By the psychology of
management, we can prevent the inevitable friction caused by the inadequate management of these un-
seen and immeasurable forces.
The psychology of management, generally deals with psychological issues and aspects of management .
A successful management can be effective by the help of techniques and using of psychological findings
in the area of management. It also provides the tools and concepts to understand different concepts such
as:
How does an individual take decisions and actions in the work place?
How can we improve our understanding in order to change our behavior and the behavior of others?
And how to prepare for management challenges?
Psychology of management is beneficial for managers who seek to enhance their management skills and
effectiveness within the context of their organization and individual performance and insure that their
organization become much more competitive.
It also gives better understanding of employee’s personalities encountered in the work place and gain a
fascinating look at varying management style and how they are best to put.
Identify the leadership and management styles: One of the key elements in the area of management’s
psychology is identification of management’s styles: Obviously, different managers have different styles
of leadership and management. So, the main questions that are raised:
What are the managerial styles?
Which management methods are successful?
Which types are appropriate for working groups?
Therefore, the psychology of management identifies the different styles of management and finally intro-
duces the successful style according to the targets and situations.
Examine the personal characteristics of the managers: The study on the individual characteristics of
managers also considers in the psychology of management, which people are suitable for management
positions and who are unable to handle the administrative tasks and affairs. It is natural that everyone do
not have ability to handle the tasks and this directly has impact on employees and therefore for an organi-
zation to achieve the desired goals.
The psychological findings in this area show that those people in childhood, adolescence and youth that
have more influence on their peers, or played pivotal role in the games often show high leadership’s
power in adulthood.
Importance of psychology of management: Man is a social creature, so that no communications with
the community destroys the concept of human life. However living in the community made human as an
organizational creature and his need to continue his life by participating in this community. It can con-
clude that human life is dependent on management knowledge and for better living he should refer to
management approaches. Failure to management not only disrupts the functions of an organization and
human life, but also causes human efforts inefficiency as valuable resources.
To sum up, study in psychological management allows us to know about the principals, rules and proper
utilization of man power, activation of creativity and creation of intellectual’s flow. By promoting such a
psychological based management, particularly in the field of educational management and research, fu-
ture generation will be fertile and their creativity will be used as the national capital.

MI`bytes was started by students en devour to give themselves a

acknowledge the contributions of executives who run corporate
houses and by doing so we also integrate industry with MIB.
A recent study on International
Trade by McKinsey & Company,
predicted that by the year 2020
around 80 per cent of the goods
in the world will be
“manufactured in a country dif-
ferent from where they are con-
sumed”. The current figure is 20
per cent, which means a potential
four-fold growth in shipping
volumes in just ten years. Logis-
tics is the sector on which the
global economy will increasingly
rely. It also means that logistics
will no longer be a mere facilita-
tor of economic growth, but will
increasingly drive the direction of
economic development.
Logistics is the art and science
of managing and controlling the
flow of goods, products, services,
energy, information and people
from the origin point to the desti-
nation point. It includes the prop-
er combination of several activi-
ties such as material handling,
warehousing, and information,
for the purpose of ensuring sup-
ply of the right product, at the
right time, at the right place, for a
right cost in the right condition.
In past India played a meagre
role in the field of logistics but
with its current expertise, valua-
ble human resources and positive
plans, it is walking on the path of
being a service provider of class.
India spends 13 percent of its
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
on logistics as opposed to the
usual practice of 10 percent by
other developing nations. The
Indian economy is striving for
improvements in the field of
logistics and supply chain man-
agement to gain the competitive
edge in today's worldwide econo-
my. The Indian government has
favoured the logistics market of
India by making some helpful
plans and policies to assist in its
growth.
There are several events orga-
nized for the promotion of logis-
tics in India which are focused in
their approach and relevant to the
business solutions besides
providing a solid platform for
allowing people from a wide
industry spectrum to meet and
provide business within them
from all over the country. This
has been an emphatic source of
providing business solutions and
their development.
The setting up of special eco-
nomic zones (SEZs) has led to
increased logistics activities
around them. Several logistics
parks have come up at locations
like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai
and Hyderabad because of their
excellent port, rail, and road
connectivity and are witnessing
significant investment in infra-
structure. Many of the large lo-
gistics players are in the process
of setting up warehouses, con-
tainer freight stations (CFS),
inland container depots(ICD),
logistics parks, distribution cen-
tres and other facilities to lever-
age the abundant opportunities.
Increase in foreign trade is ex-
pected to further accelerate the
demand for logistics services.
Several global third party logis-
tics providers (3PLs) have al-
ready started developing their
operations and service networks
in India with a purpose to explore
the rampant Indian economy.

This has resulted in the creation
of the need for a vast range of
supply chain management
(SCM) and logistics solutions
which cover several factors
such as supply chain, logistics,
material handling, storage,
Information technology (IT),
warehousing and inventory
management. This has benefited
the efficiency and productivity
of the complete value chain in
several dimensions of profits,
speed and customer service.
The Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII) is the premier
business organization with a
known commitment towards the
development of logistics in
India. It has established the CII
Institute of Logistics which is a
specialized state-of-the-art
institute of excellence with its
focus on SCM and logistics. It
is brought up to satisfy the latest
industry needs for specialized
SCM and logistics.
India is being treated as the
destination of the future in the
field of logistical service pro-
viders all over the globe. Indian
logistical market players have
started to gear up and position
themselves in the global scenar-
io. The true potential of these
service providers is yet to be
realized. India is keen to offer
transportation and logistical
service to grow itself as an
emerging marketplace. The key
sectors include fashion, gems,
jewellery, pharmaceuticals,
precision tools and engineering
goods, all of which need special
shipping provisions.
