need To KnoW• Miami football ranks first all-time in the Mid-American Conference in wins (668), MAC Championships (15), bowl appearances (10) and bowl wins (7).

• In 126 years of Miami football, the RedHawks have had just 31 losing seasons. Since joining the MAC in 1948 (66 years) Miami has had just 14 losing seasons.

• Since 2006 it has been a different story. Miami has had losing seasons in seven of the last eight years, which includes just one MAC Championship (2010).

• The RedHawks have lost 17 straight contests dating back to 2012. Miami’s last win was Oct. 27, 2012 at home versus Ohio (23-20).

• Head coach Chuck Martin, who earned that title on Dec. 3, 2013, brings an impressive resume to Oxford, Ohio. Not only was he 74-7 in six years at Grand Valley State (2004-09), he has coached in seven national championship games in the past 13 seasons. He has twice been named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Coach of the Year and has been a coordinator on both sides of the ball.

• Martin brought in nine new assistant coaches with him, four of which coached with him during his time at Grand Valley State: Matt Pawlowski (Defensive Coordinator), Eric Koehler (Co-Offensive Coordinator/QB), George Barnett (Co-Offensive Coordinator/OL) and Bill Brechin (Wide Receivers). Pat Welsh (Tight Ends) played for Coach Martin at GVSU.

• The three players joining Coach Martin from Notre Dame are Andrew Hendrix (QB), Lo Wood (DB) and Alex Welch (TE), all fifth-year seniors and expected to play a major role with the RedHawks this season. Both Hendrix (Moeller High School) and Welch (Elder High School) are local to the Oxford area.

• Seven different RedHawks made their first career start last Saturday. On offense, Collin Buchanan, Orlando David, Andrew Hendrix and Ryan Smith saw their first action for the Red and White, while Joe Donlan, Quinten Rollins and Lo Wood were first-time starters on defense.

ABoUT eAsTern KenTUCKyEastern Kentucky is coming of a 29-10 win last Thursday at Robert Morris. The Colonels registered 624 yards of total offense, compared to just 250 yards by Robert Morris. A majority of EKU’s yardage came on the ground, totalling 407 yards on 67 rush attempts. Dy’Shawn Mobley led the way with 142 yards on 25 carries. In all, 10 different EKU players recorded a rushing attempt.

series VersUs eKUMiami is 2-0-0 all-time versus Eastern Kentucky with a 19-0 win in 1934 and a 33-7 win the following year in 1935. The two teams have never played in Oxford, Ohio.

Career TouchdownsreCAppinG mArshAllAfter trailing 28-3 at the half, Miami outscored Marshall 17-0 in the third quarter and twice had the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie the game. The RedHawks struggled in the redzone in the first 30 minutes, twice marching inside the Marshall 5-yardline but scoring just three total points. The Herd finished with 432 yards of offense, compared to Miami’s 418. The RedHawks did a great job of keeping the Marshall offense off the field, dominating the time of possession (34:46).

WhAT A diFFerenCe A yeAr mAKesWhile it is just one game, the Miami offense seems to have a much different look in 2014. Below are season highs from 2013 compared to just the Marshall contest. In 2013, Miami averaged 9.8 points and 225.8 yards per game on the season.

noT A BAd deBUTFor a guy who has not started a game since high school, fifth-year senior quarterback Andrew Hendrix had one of the more impressive debuts in a RedHawk uniform. Hendrix was 24-of-49 passing for 318 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 46 yards on the ground (20 attempts).

iCe pleAseAndrew Hendrix nearly surpassed his four-year passing total at Notre Dame in a single afternoon in a RedHawk uniform. From 2010-13 Hendrix completed 25-of-58 passes for 360 yards and one touchdown for the Fighting Irish. He added 229 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Last Saturday he threw for 318 yards and three scores and added 46 yards on the ground versus Marshall.

noTre dAme ComBoJoining Andrew Hendrix on the offensive side of the ball from Notre Dame is tight end Alex Welch. Welch, who caught just one pass in 22 games for the Fighting Irish, finished last Saturday’s game with four catches for 28 yards and a score, the first collegiate touchdown of his career.

oTher CAreer dAysTwo other pass catchers had career days for Miami, thanks to Andrew Hendrix’s passing performance. Senior wide receiver David Frazier had six catches for a career-high 109 yards, and sophomore wide receiver Rokeem Williams had career-highs in catches (3), yards (99) and touchdowns (1). Frazier added a 47-yard catch, which matched Miami’s longest pass play in all of 2013.

diFFiCUlT TrAnsiTionSpencer Treadwell must still be having mixed emotions on what has happened at Miami over the past nine months. At this time last season Spencer was being coached by his father, Don Treadwell, who was beginning his third year as the RedHawks’ head coach. Don is now serving as the running backs coach at Kent State, the same position Spencer plays at Miami. The younger Treadwell was impressive in the season opener, rushing for 47 yards on 10 carries versus the Thundering Herd.

retired miami numbers

#7 Ben roethlisberger Ben Roethlisberger took his place in Miami Football history when his jersey No. 7 was retired on October 13, 2007, becoming just the third in program history to have his number retired. Roethlisberger ended his three-year playing tenure (2001-03) as the most prolific passer in program history.

#40 Bob hitchens No. 40 was retired in 1973 to mark the ac-complishments of tailback Bob Hitchens, who concluded his career as the most pro-lific runner in Miami history. At the end of his three-year tenure (1971-73), Hitchens owned Miami’s season and career records for points, rushing touchdowns, rushing at-tempts and rushing yards.

#41 Travis prentice No. 41 is being retired this week in honor of Travis Prentice. Prentice ranks sixth all-time in NCAA history with 5,596 rushing yards and second in total touchdowns with 78. He continues to own four NCAA records.

#42 John pontWorn by halfback John Pont through three varsity football campaigns, No. 42 was re-tired by the Athletic Advisory Council fol-lowing his senior season in 1951. Pont thus became the first athlete in Miami history to have his jersey retired.

Austin Gearing, who started Miami’s final four games of the 2013 campaign, finished the year 24-of-54 passing for 188 yards and added 478 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Gearing led Miami in rushing yards last season.

rollins moVes From The hArdWood To The TUrFQuinten Rollins started at cornerback for Miami versus Marshall and recorded two tackles and two pass breakups after spending the past four seasons with the Miami men’s basketball program. A few of his basketball highlights include: • Finished his career ranked second at Miami and 12th in MAC history in steals (214).• One of only 15 players in MAC history to reach 200 steals.• Ranked fourth all-time at Miami in assists (391), seventh in games started (106) and ninth in minutes played (3,448).• Played in 116 career games.

middle lineBACKer mAChineIn his last 12 games, Kent Kern has six double-digit tackle performances, including 13 stops last week versus Marshall. Kern, who was named second-team All-MAC last season led the team with 98 tackles in 2013.

moVinG on BACKHard to find a player on the Miami RedHawks who has had a bigger change than Joe Donlan. Donlan began the 2013 season as a linebacker, but was moved to tight end midway through the season, seeing several snaps on that side of the ball. This year, Donlan is back on the defensive side of the ball, practicing with the first-team defense at outside linebacker. Versus Marshall, Donlan recorded a career-best seven tackles.

he’s GoT leGsJunior kicker Christian Koch, while officially not credited with a start, did see his first action as a Miami RedHawk versus Marshall and was impressive doing it. The junior averaged 48.8 yards per punt on five total punts, which included a 60-yarder early in the contest.

perFeCT pATTersonJunior kicker Kaleb Patterson was perfect last Saturday, connecting on a pair of short field goals (22 and 24 yards). Patterson is 24-of-31 on field goal attempts in his career.

niCe sTArTFred McRae opened his season is a big way. After three straight fair catches McRae finally got a chance to show what he can do early in the third quarter. McRae registered a 54-yard punt return before being tackled at the Marshall 7-yardline. The 54-yard return was McRae’s only return of the game.

TrAVis prenTiCe’s #41 To Be reTiredTravis Prentice (1996-99), will become the fourth RedHawk to have his football jersey retired. Prentice’s #41 will join Ben Roethlisberger’s #7, Bob Hitchens’ #40 and John Pont’s #42 just below the south scoreboard inside Yager Stadium. Prentice will have his jersey retired at halftime versus Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 6, 2014.

At the completion of his Miami career, the Louisville, Ky., native owned 35 career and single season Miami records. Prentice ranked first in rushing yards (5,596), rushing attempts (1,138), scoring (468), touchdowns (78) and all-purpose yards (6,118) to go along with many other Miami records. Still to this day, his 5,596 rushing yards rank sixth all-time in NCAA history, behind Ron Dayne (6,397), Ricky Williams (6,279), Tony Dorsett (6,082), DeAngelo Williams (6,026) and Charles White (5,598).

“Touchdown Travis” was a three-time first-team All-MAC performer who played in 44 career games (33 starts), finishing with 73 rushing touchdowns, second-most in NCAA history behind Monte Balls’ 77. Despite his 1,138 rushing attempts, the three-time Doak Walker semifinalist lost just two fumbles in his RedHawk career. From Nov. 2, 1996 to Oct. 9, 1999, Prentice recorded 862 consecutive rushing attempts without losing a fumble, which still stands as an NCAA record today.

iF yoU BUild iT...Miami’s Athletic Director, David Sayler, has been busy in his first 20 months, adding several facilities for the department. The newest installment can be seen just north of Yager Stadium. The new Indoor Sports Center will serve as the indoor practice facility for a majority of Miami’s sports teams, including football. Installation is expected to be complete by Christmas.

Other facilities in the works/complete are the new weight room at Steve Cady Arena for the ice hockey team (complete), the baseball Legacy Project (has begun) and Millett Hall renovations (almost complete) for basketball and volleyball.

‘lil John hArBAUGhMiami added its ninth member to the Cradle of Coaches Plaza (south endzone) back in April after John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens won his first superbowl. To celebrate the incredible feat, Miami Athletics created a miniature John Harbaugh statue that was given to all season ticket holders for the 2014 football season.

PAUL BROWN (`30) was named as the 12th greatest coach of all time by The Sporting News (TSN). Miamians WALTER ALSTON (`35) and BO SCHEMBECHLER (`51) ranked 35th and 36th on the list, while ARA PARSEGHIAN (`49) was selected as sports’ 44th great-est coach. A fifth man with Miami ties, WOODY HAYES, ranked 27th on TSN’s list. Hayes served as Miami’s football coach from 1949-50.

The August 3, 2009 publication asked a panel of 118 top coaches, media and sports administrators to choose the Top 50 list.

Altogether, only four universities contributed more than one alumnus to the list. Mi-ami’s four alumni topped Alabama (Paul “Bear” Bryant and Bobby Bowden), Minnesota (Bud Wilkinson and Herb Brooks) and Kansas (Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp), which each had two alums ranked among the Top 50. Purdue graduate John Wooden, the famed “Wizard of Westwood”, was ranked as the No. 1 coach of all time.

An Ohio native who was a two-year football letter winner (1928-29), paul Brown is a member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and excelled as a coach at the collegiate and professional levels. Brown was head coach at Ohio State (1941-43) and led the Buckeyes to their first national title in 1942. Brown then served as head coach at the professional level with the Cleve-land Browns (1946-62) and Cincinnati Bengals (1968-75), winning cham-pionships in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League. His squads would win 2,040 games during his tenure, the seventh-highest win total among major league managers. He helped to establish a “Dodger Way,” which many of his former players later used to become successful managers themselves.

A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Bo schembechler was a two-year letter winner (1949-50) and head coach (1963-68) with the Red and White. During his six seasons as head coach, schembechler led Miami to a 40-17-3 record and back-to-back conference co-championships (1965-66). schembechler then became the head coach at the University of Michigan (1969-89) and led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten titles.

Chuck martinhead CoachFirst seasonCoaching record: 74-8record at miami: 0-1Milliken, 1990

Chuck Martin was named the 36th head foot-ball coach in Miami history on Dec. 3, 2013.

Martin, who has more than 20 years of col-legiate coaching experience, brings six years of head coaching ex-perience to the RedHawk program. He has twice been named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2005 and 2006, and has coached in seven national championship games in the past 13 seasons. In addition to his head coaching experience, Martin has served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball. Of those seven national championship game appearances, he has been a part of four national championship wins, with two titles under his direction as head coach/offensive coordina-tor and one as a defensive coordinator.

Martin spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame, serving as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2012-13) and defensive backs/recruiting coordinator (2010-11). In 2012, he orchestrated an offense that played in the BCS National Championship game versus Alabama. In 2011, he was named one of the top 25 recruiters in the nation by ESPN.com and was named to Rivals.com’s Second-Team As-sistant Coach Dream Team.

In Martin’s two years calling plays, Notre Dame combined to go 20-5 overall and was one of the most balanced offenses in the country, averaging 26.4 points, 170.0 rushing and 235.6 passing per game.

Prior to arriving in South Bend, Martin was head coach and offensive coordinator for Grand Valley State University from 2004-2009 and compiled a 74-7 (.914) record, including an impressive 16-4 record in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. He and the Lakers won back-to-back national championships in 2005 and 2006 and finished runner-up in 2009. He directed Grand Valley State to 48 consecutive regular-sea-son victories and 45 straight wins in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He also guided the Lakers to a Division II record 40-game winning streak from 2005-07. Martin produced seven Associated Press First-Team All-America players as head coach.

At GVSU, Martin’s offenses averaged 35.1 points, 208 rushing and 427 total yards per game. The Lakers ranked among the top-25 nation-ally in total offense in five of six seasons and ranked in the top-27 in scoring offense in all but one season. In that time, his offense scored at least 30 points in 56 of 81 games and scored at least 40 points in 34 contests.

Many of those offenses were led by quarterbacks who were devel-oped under Martin. In six years, GVSU produced four Harlon Hill final-ists, given annually to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year (Cullen Finnerty in 2006 and Brad Iciek from 2007-09). In that span, Laker quarterbacks threw 184 touchdown passes and just 41 interceptions.

His offenses were not just about the quarterback. In all six seasons, he produced a 1,000-yard rusher. In four of those seasons, a running back finished as a top-10 rusher in Grand Valley State history.

Before becoming head coach, Martin served as the defensive coordi-nator for the Lakers in 2003, helping GVSU win a national champion-ship. Martin’s defense allowed just nine total points in the final three games of the playoff run and among the ranked top-10 nationally in scoring, rushing and total defense that season.

Martin served as the defensive backs and outside linebackers coach at GVSU from 2000-02. Prior to arriving in Allendale, Mich., Martin spent time at Eastern Michigan (1998-1999, linebackers), Millikin University (1996-97, defensive coordinator/defensive backs), Witten-berg University (1994-95, linebackers) and Mankato State University (1992-93, graduate assistant/linebackers).

While attending Millikin (1986-90), Martin was an All-American safety and was selected as a GTE Academic All-American. He doubled as an All-American place kicker, received Academic All-District honors for the Millikin baseball team and was inducted into the Millikin Hall of Fame in 2008.

He graduated in 1990 with a degree in accounting and earned his master’s degree in physical education from Mankato State University in 1993.

Martin and his wife Dulcie have two children, Max and Emma.
