my hometown

The Fever STarTS here!

I recently gathered with a group of girlfriends for some wine sipping and appetizer enjoyment at a local establishment. It was an arranged “girl’s night out” for a handful of us who had become friends after landing in Estrella separately. Each of us came to this community from different states, in different years and for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this particular outing was to bid

a farewell to one of us in the group, sort of a send-off, as she and her husband relocate to a different state in pursuit of a new busi-ness opportunity. And

as goodbyes go, a hint of somber was cast upon us, yet our moods included enthusiasm for the brilliance of new things to come.

Spring is the season that provides that open invita-tion to pursue something fresh for all of us. Maybe it’s a chance to grow something new in your backyard garden or an opportunity to catch a spring training game or two at the Goodyear Ballpark, enabling you to soak up some extra rays with the longer, sun-kissed days. It’s a new sea-son and a new beginning, inviting each of us to grasp it.

I’m excited to share the stories we’re featuring with-in this issue. They’re stories of new beginnings for the com-munity, as our cover story reveals the opening entertainment band, Night Groove, the first of a new series of bands coming to our neighbor-hood. Read about a champion speller, a taste of history and a “tasting” held for local Board and Goodyear City Council members. I especially enjoyed an invitation to meet with a neighborhood book club and listen to the author, Judith Redline Coopey, as she shared pieces of her own history that helped form the pages of the group’s featured book, Redfield Farm. I now have a new “must read” on my book list for spring.

I guess you might say my relocating friend caught some sort of fever. Hers is a “fever” to pursue a new adventure, unable to predict all of the details of the overall outcome – none of us can. She’s excited and optimistic about building on a foundation that she has already established, allowing herself to move forward in pursuit of new exploration. That’s not something easy to do. What’s got you feverish this spring? What will be your next chapter?

“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is.”…Bob Feller (American baseball pitcher-Cleveland Indians 1936-1956)

concert in the Park series comes to EstrellaShine your dancing shoes and get set to be

entertained with some upbeat music on Saturday, March 10 from 6 to 8pm at the Estrella outdoor Amphitheater!

Night Groove is the first band of scheduled performers, kicking off a series of local musical enter-tainment in the community in the coming months entitled “Concert by the Lake.” Bring those dancing shoes, blankets or lawn chairs, your kids and even your pets (welcomed, if leashed), to the Estrella Amphitheater on Saturday March 10 from 6 to 8pm for this family-fun and completely FREE kick-off event.

You’re sure to enjoy the musical talents of Night Groove as they play a unique variety of R&B, jazz, soul and rock music. They’ve got the driving rhythms sure to have you up on your feet. Maybe you’ll request the smooth jazz number “Smooth Operator” by Sade, or possibly the disco beat of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Love the Nightlife” is a personal favorite. Night Groove, the six-to-nine piece entertainment band that formed in Phoenix in 2006, is crowd pleasing and open to taking requests. Lead vocalists Ronda Wilson and Cornelius Bishop have the versatile sounds and high energy that will have you dancing under Estrella’s star-studded sky.

The series will continue with musical performances scheduled in May. The Vinco De Mayo event planned for May 5 is featuring Veerona Ragone, who will be promoting her new sound releases with her band RAV. An

Kailyn Gillete, seventh grader at Estrella Mountain Elementary School, returned to school with a first place medal after five rounds of competition at the 2011-2012 Liberty Elementary School District Spelling Bee recently. She correctly spelled the words: condiment, ser-

enade, emphasize, potassium, loathe and siege, eliminating nine other competitors in the fifth round. Participating stu-

dents included Morgan Anderson and Kailyn Gillette from Estrella Mountain Elementary School, Leo Alvarez and Cameron Aston from Westar Elementary School, Aaron Favors and Aiden Gutierrez from Freedom Elementary School, Aiden Gutierrez and Jordan McCloud, Liberty Elementary School and Krysta Medina and Daniel Alarcon from Rainbow Valley Elementary School. All participants had previously won competitions within their own individual classes, preceding the district level competition. Kailyn now moves on to regional competition and, if successful at that level, state.

Kailyn shyly disclosed that she has never practiced or studied for a spell-ing competition, but admitted that her good long-term memory coupled with her love for reading probably helped her earn the “golden ticket” as a winner in the spelling bee. She does get a bit nervous prior to spelling tricky

additional band is being scheduled for May 12 (My Hometown Estrella will reveal the group of scheduled entertainers as they are secured through the manage-ment company).

Concerts by the Lake continues during an addi-tional spring sunset, as Newland, The City of Goodyear and The West Valley Arts Council come together to bring The Phoenix Symphony to Estrella on May 20. The series continues into fall, with a September 29 date

and finally a performance at the Fall-Festival in October. The management company is currently working to secure vendors and

sponsors for these events. Anyone interested is asked to please contact Holly Aguilar at [email protected]. For added enjoyment that evening, Chef Michael, Starpointe Café, is preparing his delicious pot roast with vegetables, salad and roll for take-out dinners prior to the musical engagement. Call 623-986-8662, text [email protected] or email your order to pick up and head down to the lake to enjoy the concert. Orders must be submitted by Friday, March 9, 3pm. Pickup by 5pm on Saturday, March 10. The price for takeout dinner is $12.

“The Social Committee and I agreed that music was the way we were going to bring the community together this year and made sure that we planned accordingly,” said Lifestyle Director, Holly Aguilar. “I am so excited to see families and neighbors dancing and toe tapping by the lake. I hope that it is the start of something that we can build on and continue for years to come.”

Kailyn is pictured with runner-up, Aaron Favors, 5th grader at Freedom elementary School

liberty School District’s Spelling bee Champion - Kailyn Gillettewords in front of audiences and states that sometimes her face turns flush and heated and her hands turn freezing cold.

Kailyn’s favorite subjects in school are writing, reading, spelling and art, admitting that math was a subject where she felt she had the least strength. She’s currently reading the epic-romantic fantasy entitled The Tiger’s Curse, by Colleen Houck, where a tiger turns human, which she finds extremely interesting.

The district win isn’t Kailyn’s first spelling bee competition. She placed in fourth and sixth grade, going to the district round in her sixth grade year. This time when she walked into her seventh period writing class, after returning to school from the competition, she hid her medal, “Like ‘American Idol’ contestants sometimes hide their ‘golden tickets’ to Hollywood,” she stated. And hesitantly exposed the medal and a huge smile as a classmate announced that Kailyn had won!

The concept of spelling bees originated from Noah Webster’s spelling books, first published in 1786, which were called The Blue-backer Speller. These books were an important part of the American elementary school curriculum for five generations. Spelling Bees developed into the U.S. National Spelling Bee, later becoming the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It is a common belief that spelling success most often comes from knowing the word origins. Prior to the district competition Superintendent Dr. Andrew Rogers explained that the Scripps National Spelling Bee allows students the opportunity to refine spelling skills, while engaging in friendly competition with their peers.

d-votion trail grand Opening

On Saturday, February 11, a great group of residents, vendors, runners, bikers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts gathered for the dedication and grand opening of “D-Votion,” the newest section of trails in the community, coupled with a 5K Trail walk/run. Those in attendance were able to experience this new section of the Estrella Loop.

Prior to a recent regularly scheduled Board of Directors Meeting, Chef Cunningham from The Starpointe Café invit-ed the Goodyear City Council Members and Estrella’s Board of Directors, along with staff from the Capital Consultants Management Corporation to sample a “taste” of menu items

featured at the new Starpointe Café. Chef Michael Cunningham and his wife Norma, along with Estrella Foothill’s High School’s Culinary Arts Chef, Lisa DeCota, visited with the distinguished group of visitors. Sampling items included a succulent Mexican-style shrimp cocktail, caesar salad with Chef Cunningham’s secret homemade dressing, classic Cuban panini with banana nut bread pudding as the sweet seal on the scrumptious samples. The evening was entirely served by students in advanced culinary arts classes from Estrella Foothills High School. The new café is teaming with Estrella Mountain Community College and Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Arts Programs to employ the students who will, in turn, receive credit hours for their interships. “The Culinary students have been a major part of our staff for the last two months. They are doing an internship with Chef Michael and if they wish to stay, will be considered for employment in the future,” added Norma.

Don’t forget to inspect your attic. Going up into your attic is a lot like a trip to your in-laws. It’s uncomfortable, and you probably won’t enjoy it, but these little excursions are necessary from time to time. If you haven’t inspected your attic lately, it’s time to get up there and give it a thorough once-over. Your attic should be dry and cool (November-April) in Arizona.

If it’s unusually warm, drafty, or you can hear your neighbors talking inside their homes, then you need to improve attic ventilation and insulation. If this problem isn’t addressed, it can lead to unwanted pests and costly heating and cooling bills. Handyman Xtreme can’t visit your in-laws for you, but we can inspect your attic if you want to limit your uncomfortable excursions. Handyman Xtreme - We’re here for you! 602-773-1973.

school newsWestar science Olympiad tournament

Earlier this year Westar Elementary School Hosted a Science Olympiad Tournament to regis-tered teams in Arizona. Twenty teams from 14 differ-ent schools participated. A total of 270 students from grades six, seven and eight competed in 14 diverse events against very tough competition. The partici-pants built various devices to solve specific problems as they dem-onstrated their skills in engi-neering con-cepts. Some of the participants collected and analyzed data to find the answers to questions, others displayed com-puter skills to research, find data and obtain answers to proposed questions. Westar Elementary and her sister school, Estrella Mountain Elementary, both fielded teams at this tournament with great success. A special congratulations to Westar Elementary School’s Damontae White and Xavier Reed for receiving first place in the physics event – Optics. Congratulations, in addition, to Damontae White, Kitra Budnik and Nicolas Acciardo for a fifth-place ribbon in “Experimental Design,” where teams were required to design and experiment to answer a given question, conduct it, analyze the data collected and write up the experiment in a 50-minute time period. Estrella Mountain Elementary School did an awe-some job taking first place in the two engineering events – Mission Possible and Mousetrap Vehicle.

The community was presented with top award for “Best For Sale Community Over 200 Homes” and the silver award for “Best Green Community” at the NAHB International Builders Show staged this week in Orlando, Florida. The competition was sponsored by the NAHB 50+ Housing Council, which serves NAHB members involved in all aspects of 50+ housing. “We are extremely honored to have CantaMia win two significant NAHB awards, being judged against our competitors nation-wide. This recognition of our commitment to create something fresh for the ‘Baby Boomers’ marching toward retirement is very meaningful in this competitive industry,” said Carl Mulac, President of Avatar Properties, Inc., the community builder and developer.

CantaMia, loosely translated, means “My Song,” a celebration of the unique journey one takes when the career goals have changed and the children have been raised. The 587-acre boutique-size, gated community is being developed within the master-planned community of Estrella, in the Phoenix metropolitan area. CantaMia features 16 different floor plans from

“We love living in CantaMia,” noted Lori Rust, who moved to CantaMia this past year with her husband Kevin. “We toured the United States for several years, visiting scores of active adult retirement communi-ties, and country club communities, researching the lifestyle and golf options. eFHs spiritline squads sHINe at state state spiritline Championship

The AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) State Spiritline Championships were held at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley early last month. Congratulations to the Pom team, that took first place and are the State Champions in their division. The Cheer squad took third place, Partner stunt finished in eighth place and then the squads were the Overall State Division II Coed Runner-Ups. The award was based on the points of individual routines: Cheer, Pom, Partner stunt.

EFHS competes in Division II Coed, with one male on the team and 25 females. The squads had to qualify to attend the state competition, based on the November 12 qualifier, where just the top 10 teams in each category advanced. All three of the EFHS routines qualified back in November, making them eligible for the overall Division II Coed award presented to them at the State com-petition last month. The State championships were held at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, AZ. “This competition is the most important of the year,” said Coach Olson. “We will receive an addition to our banner that hangs in our main gym and our State trophy and plaque are displayed in our trophy case in the gym lobby,” she added. “It is a great achievement for our team, school and community and the coaches are extremely proud of our ladies and gentleman.”

Next, the squads will be attending the USA Nationals Spiritline Competition on March 29 through April 2 in Anaheim, CA. There, they will compete against teams from across the U.S. Best wishes and good luck to all of the competitors from EFHS!

WHO are tHe

people in your neighborhood

Bridgette’s sister-in-law, Jillian, was quick to recommend an introduc-tion of the Jankowski family, describing Bridgette as a “Jack of all trades.” Bridgette admits that she loves challenging projects, whether it be fixing a refrigerator (scoot over Whirlpool repairman) or building an ottoman. She’s also busy with a business making and selling hair bows, called “Oh So Girly”

(ohsogirly.blogspot.com). But her energy doesn’t stop there. Bridgette co-started what she calls “the-craft-addicts.com,” where she organizes ready-to-go craft projects coupled with delicious food and fun for community members. The last crafting day was held at Canta Mia and proved to be a huge success.

Bridgette’s husband, Jeff Jankowski, teaches Sports Medicine at Buckeye Union High School. For the past eight years he has educated students who plan to enter the medical field after gradu-ation. Jeff is also the school’s Athletic

Trainer and handles sports injury cases, as well as rehabilitation cases for injured student athletes at Buckeye Union High. He’s an advisor of the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) program and works with Venturing Scouts, made up of boy scouts 14 years and older. Jeff works with scouts 16 and older. He’s undoubtedly a very busy guy! Jeff is also a huge sports fan, following local teams as well as his favorites, the N.Y.

The Jankowski Family - Jeff, Bridgette, ty and sydney Giants, Yankees and Coyotes. The fact that Jeff is from Connecticut probably explains why many of his favorite teams are east coasters!

Jeff and Bridgette have been married for 10 and a half years, moving to the west valley eight years ago. They claim responsibility for coaxing three other Connecticut Jankowski households into moving west, and then following them to Estrella. The Jankowskis have two children – Ty, age seven and Sydney, age four. One of this family’s favorite activities is working out with the CrossFit group, Fitness Estrella, run by Estrella resident Paul Burgess. The fitness group meets at Bougainvillea Park in Montecito and allows Jeff and Bridgette to participate in fitness routines, as the kids enjoy friends at the park.

Little Sydney is described by mom as smart and sassy. She enjoys play-ing with babies, Barbie dolls and dressing up in princess clothes, declaring on the last family trip to Disneyland that she intends to become employed as a Disneyland Princess when she grows up.

Ty, age seven, is described by his parents as obedient and tender hearted. He recently announced to mom that he would “NEVER” get a speeding ticket, once he learns to drive. Ty dreams of becoming a police officer when he grows up. After homework time, Ty lives for “Angry Birds.” He anxiously finds the eggs and treasures and also loves playing soccer with the Estrella league.

You’re likely to spot members of the Jankowski family at Trivia Night at the Starpointe; riding a mountain bike on FINS trails; at the Easter Eggstravaganza; the community pool during the summer months; or decorat-ing a bicycle in red, white and blue for the annual Fourth of July parade. It’s “everything” about Estrella that the Jankowski family loves.

When Estrella Resident, Linda Pearson-Vieser, hosted a book club evening at her home recently, she decided to invite the author, Judith Redline Coopey, who graciously accepted the invitation. Retired history teacher, Judith Coopey, described to the group that her attempt to connect with her own family history on a genealogy mis-sion in the ‘70s, revealed her own Quaker ancestry. Thus began a journey to learn more about Quakers and the Underground Railroad. “The more research you do, the more you get involved,” said the soft-spoken author.

Redfield Farm is Judith’s first novel, one that is rich in characters, as described by many of the book club members. It invites the reader to become entangled in the characters’ personalities, as Ann Redfield follows her brother Jesse through life. Jesse is a conductor on the Underground Railroad. And page-by-page readers follow the activities and processes of how they escape would-be enforcers of the hated Fugitive Slave Laws.

Judith Coopey conveys realistic, well-developed compassionate charac-ters because she “writes like she talks” she described. Her open, honest and upfront manner, seem to be a key factor to the success of grabbing readers attention and keeping it. One of the book club members, Linda, shared that Judith’s book helped her become aware of so much that she didn’t know about Quakers, women’s rights and the Civil War. Judith Coopey’s second novel, Waterproof, is set to be released on May 4.

Help support Castaway Treasures Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives of abused, neglected and unwanted animals by donating $40.00 and Liberty Tax will do you taxes for free. Your donation will help provide pet food, horse feed, hay, supplies and veteri-nary services.

Adrian and John Bruno of Castaway Treasures have been rescuing animals for 23 years. They have devoted their lives to saving lives and have given up many comforts to keep the sanctuary running. They do wonderful things all day, every-day for animals; most of the time it goes unnoticed by people. They bring miracles of healing, a loving touch and a safe haven for the unwanted to live. Adrian states, “this sanctuary is so important, it is not just a place to house and adopt animals, it is a place of healing, physically and mentally, a place where animals will learn to trust again. For example, Azure was an Appaloosa horse that lost her sight and struggled with adjusting to life in the dark. She could not be ridden anymore. To prevent Azure from becoming bored her owner thought she would try something with her...painting. Azure took to it right away. She painted with her nose and upper lip. Her paintings have helped raise money for the sanctuary and they are even signed with her hoof print. There are many examples like this at the Sanctuary.

Liberty Tax is not just here to serve you at tax time it is here to help you and the community year round. So please join in this event starting on March 8th through the 10th to help support Castaway Treasures Animal Sanctuary. Appointment bookings will go quickly! The nearest location to Estrella is: 145 N. Dysart Rd. Ste.A4, Corner of Dysart & Van Buran, Avondale, 623-935-3331.

Knowledge is Power

I am an information junkie, and I’m not alone. Today we have unlim-ited access to research on any topic, and as the saying goes, “knowledge is power.” This is true for anyone, even those who would use knowledge to do harm. As parents, do we want to avoid the topic of drugs and alcohol, and hope that our kids will avoid them? Or maybe just demand that they “never touch that stuff ” and threaten consequences? Or do we want to arm them with information? If the knowledge comes from supportive conversations with you, or research initiated by you, your kids are in a much more power-ful position to defend themselves against persuasion of those who would do harm, or those who failed to defend themselves and may know not what they do. The earlier they get the information, the better. Some excellent websites loaded with information for kids, teens, parents (grandparents, aunts/uncles) and teachers are:

www.drugabuse.gov (National Institute on Drug Abuse - NIDA)www.teens.drugabuse.gov (NIDA for teens)www.drugfreeaz.org (Partnership for a Drug Free America)www.abovetheinfluence.org (created for National Youth Anti-Drug

Media Campaign, a program of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, this is an interactive, hugely informative resource designed with input from teens about what their lives are really like.)

Start by educating yourself and your family. In the same way we baby-proof our homes to keep our precious little ones safe, we can also “addiction-proof ” our environments to some extent. As these precious little ones mature toward adulthood, they will begin to make their own choices. Let me repeat: they will make their own choices. Pre-adolescence and adolescence are when youth begin to “test drive” identity, transition toward independence, and develop their personal value systems which, in a healthy individual, will be strong and basically stable by their mid-twenties. This is why teens so easily spot and call out hypocrisy. If our behavior and our teachings are incongruent, they notice. No one gets it right every time – we are human and flawed. They see that too, and what a cool thing when an adult can admit she is flawed and still growing – this models character, and we want youth to know that our character is safe to integrate into that which is forming in them. So think Teflon for the mind. A strong character development early on will serve as that Teflon coating for the stuff of life that will hit them. Children will still make mistakes, but we can do three basic things to prepare them:

1. Simplify choices. This means offering freedom within reasonable boundaries. It means knowing friends and parents of friends before approving activities. It also involves money management and reality testing – more on that another day.

2. Communicate. This means asking questions, lis-tening to answers, and sharing information wisely and in age-appropriate doses. The most important of these is listening.

3. Prioritize face-time with family and trusted friends. Preserve family traditions and outings. Two protective factors that non drug-users consis-tently have are a spiritual belief system and strong family bonds. A simple start is protecting family dinner time a few nights per week.

strength in Numbers

One reason we love Estrella is that it is a small com-munity where people are watchful. Most of our neighbors know us, and know our kids. Select friends have a green light to intervene if they see my kids in danger, like the

Teflon Your Tween- Substance Abuse Prevention 101Patti has been a licensed counselor (lIsaC) in arizona since 2004. together, with My Hometown estrella newspaper, she hopes to

time my son thought it would be fun to get shot in the back by an air-not-so-soft gun. We feel safe knowing friends care, and that we care for their kids.

Finally, be aware that the peaceful, tranquil Estrella we were drawn to for raising our children can also draw those who might capitalize on our feelings of safety. Feeling safe rocks – complacency puts our kids at risk. Things we would constantly watch out for if we lived in the inner city can still impact us here on the hill. Our community is small, but growing. As it grows, introduce yourself to new neighbors with a plate of cookies. Sit out front and read the paper (or your favorite I-news site) while the air is still cool. Take a new route as you walk the dog.

I hope this helps you and your families get started, if you haven’t already confronted this topic. If you think someone in your family needs help, I can assist you with screening for substance abuse or dependence, and referrals if intensive treatment is needed. To get a listing of SAMHSA approved substance abuse treatment programs, call 1-888-301-1143 and they will confidentially provide you with three options as close as possible to Goodyear. SAMHSA is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. You can also visit www.findtreatment.samhsa.gov.

About Patti:My husband and I returned to Arizona with our two children, then

just toddlers, after a six-year stay in Silicon Valley. We met and married in Flagstaff in ’96 after studying at NAU. I studied Elementary and Special Education and started teaching children with a wide range of learning and/or emotional challenges. It was during that first year of teaching that I felt led to confront the issues on the “back end” of learning and emotional struggles, and later decided to study psychology.

Fast forward to 2002, we relocated to Goodyear and built our first home in Estrella. During my second practicum assignment toward completing my M.A., I met my supervisor, Patricia Hernandez, who is still a close friend and mentor. Through working with her to help adolescents overcome sub-stance abuse issues, my focus began to shift toward families impacted by drug and/or alcohol abuse and dependency. It made sense and answered some tough questions I had about my own family history.

I have found that all parents seek health, happiness and a prosperous future for their children. All children want love and acceptance from family and friends. When drugs are introduced (or have been around a while) in a family system, they threaten all of these hopes. My hope for families today is that we can see this threat, and stand together as a caring community to protect those we love from its impact, and intervene for those who may already be at risk. We are all important in the health of our neighborhoods, so please, never underestimate your contribution.

Step inside the luxurious Goodyear salon, carefully decorated by utilizing a warm palate of colors on walls and window coverings, accented with comfortable chairs, a small café station, rose embellished accent pillows and art-work throughout, all nestled among the captivating aroma of Aveda essential oils. Add a team of master-skilled styl-ists, an esthetician and nail technician to the serene sur-roundings and you’re sure to exit relaxed and pampered as a valuable artistic impression of beauty.

The Rose Hair Studio, located at 2333 N. Pebblecreek Parkway, Suite A101, has been open just more than one year and owner Rochelle Baumgartner couldn’t be happier about the success of her vision to create a professional, tranquil and Christian-based atmosphere in her salon. That vision has become a dream-come-true reality. Rochelle is thrilled by the fact that business has increased at the Rose Hair Studio by more than 50 percent in the last year. She attributes that success to her faith as well as the attention to details given to clients by her professional staff.

The staff at The Rose Hair Studio includes a team of stylists, an estheti-cian and a nail technician- Brandie, Kelsey, June, Rochelle, Angela, Bailey, Meshell, Crystal, Aislinn and Gloria; each of these professionals dedicated to making your salon experience a cutting-edge, satisfying and pleasant one. The salon schedules appointments Monday through Saturday, offering special promotions, including those seen in the advertising section of My Hometown Estrella.

Owner Rochelle Baumgartner brought The Rose Hair Studio to Goodyear after moving to Arizona from the eastern state of Ohio. The salon has only been open since May 2010, but Rochelle has been surrounded by the business of beauty for as long as she can remember. She grew up in South

Dakota. As one of five children, Rochelle has followed in the footsteps of her mother, brother, aunts, uncles and a niece. It was many years ago when she worked in a salon, owned by her fam-ily in Boise, Idaho that she discovered the sig-nificance of using natural, “Green Innovation” products. Thus, choosing the flower and plant-based Aveda products and essential oils to use

throughout her salon exclusively. It’s common practice at The Rose Hair Studio to receive a complimentary sensory aroma experience with a mini-hand massage or a stress-relieving scalp and shoulder massage to help you relax during your visit.

When she’s not running the business end of her salon or cutting and styling hair, Rochelle likes to spend free time with her children Aislinn and Brandon, visiting their timeshare in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She’s also hoping to visit the Washington and Oregon coastline this summer. To make an appointment or to learn more about the complete menus of hair design, style, and skin and nail care, call 623-374-4688 or visit their website at www.therosehairstudio.com

"Greg got our family's future back on the right track. He successfully workedwith our two lenders, and recieved short sale approval letters from both. Not only did they agree to a payoff for less than what we owed, he negotiatedthat we would not owe any deficiency balance to either in the future. What a relief. Best of all, we did NOT PAY - any real estate commissions, any closingcosts, and got relieved from over $298,000 of debt. Thanks you so much Greg."

For an unprecedented third consecutive year, Rosewood Homes has earned the Eliant “Homebuyers’ Choice Award” for providing the “Best Overall Purchase and Ownership Experience” in North America. Rosewood Homes earned the highest overall customer satisfaction scores in the United States and Canada in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The 15th annual competition by Eliant, a customer experience management company, surveyed more than 68,000 recent homeowners across the U.S. and Canada to find the best homebuilders in North America. Rosewood triumphed over more than 200 builders representing in excess of 1,500 new home neighborhoods to be honored with this award.

In addition to the top award, Rosewood Homes was also recognized for having the best-constructed homes while earning the Eliant Award for “Best Overall First Year Quality.”

Today, Rosewood provides some of the most energy efficient homes in the Valley with their Emerald Series homes. Green from the inside out, the Emerald Series – found within the Stone Gate neighborhood in Montecito at Estrella – offers luxury homes priced from the low $200’s. Emerald Series homes are up to 57 percent more energy efficient than current building code requirements and 70-80 percent more efficient than most resale homes. In addition to top-tier green construction practices, every Emerald Series home comes equipped, at no additional charge, with a top-of-the-line Echo PVT solar/thermal system valued between $15,000 and $19,000.

Stone Gate homes range from 2,481 to 3,615 square feet and offer gourmet kitchens, luxurious master baths, courtyards, porches, private loggias, optional guest casitas, three-car garages and more. This beautifully designed neighborhood is nestled in the heart of Estrella with parks, trails, top rated K-12 schools and the picturesque Sierra Estrella Mountains close by.

Estrella and the Community Cares Lifestyle & Wellness Expo hosted the “Stay Smart, Stay Fit Charity Walk and Festival” on Saturday, January 28. The fun-filled event took place in the parking lot of the Starpointe Residents Club and the goal was to raise awareness and funds for local health and education organizations.

All proceeds from the 2K Charity Walk around the North Lake benefitted Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, Liberty School District and Buckeye Union High School District.

Following the Walk, guests enjoyed an afternoon of festivities promoting health and wellness education and activities. Attendees received samples, educational materials, helpful advice and even free massages as they visited the many vendor booths.

A craft table station, giant slide and inflatable jump house provided amusement for Estrella’s youngest residents. Karen Frye, mother of Phoenix Suns Forward–Center Channing Frye and host of “Girlfriends Talk Sports with KFrye,” entertained the crowd while filming a segment with former Super Bowl champion, Seth Joyner.

Employees from Abrazo Healthcare’s West Valley Hospital and Emergency Center were onsite to perform free health screenings. The Starpointe Residents Club’s personal training and fitness class instructors hosted a Fitness Zone, where they offered fitness assessments and led group workout classes including Zumba.

Carrie Hill, an Estrella resident, teaches students between the ages of ten and twelve who have Autism, as well as other students with special needs. Continuously looking for new ideas and methods to engage her students at Estrella’s Westar Elementary, Hill came up with an idea of a community garden. Students will maintain the garden and will be involved from planting through harvesting. Journals will be kept by each student so individually, and as a class, the growth observations are documented and their success is celebrated.

“My sole objective is for my students to feel that they are growing and learning everyday,” said Hill. “The idea of having them plan, develop and see tangible results from their efforts of growing a garden goes hand-in-hand with my goals as their teacher.”

Westar Elementary is recognized as a STEM school. STEM schools focus on four areas of study: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and aim to reinvent the typical teacher-centered classroom by enforcing a curriculum motivated by problem solving and discovery. The environment requires students be actively engaged in situations to find resolutions to daily problems.

“Now that we are a STEM school, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to introduce the concept of students developing and monitoring their own project,” added Hill. “In order for my students to learn, they have to be able to face challenges and experience trial-and-error firsthand to prepare them for higher education and beyond.”

The garden is still in the beginning stages of development. Hill’s plan is to have students plant tomatoes this Spring and eventually expand to include herbs and various fruits. It is her belief that the garden ultimately benefits all Westar Elementary students, and she hopes it will become an outdoor classroom for everyone.
