Introduction

Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process

that takes a lot of time and efforts. Nowadays it is especially important to know

foreign languages. Some people learn languages because they need them for their

work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. Everyone,

who knows foreign languages can speak to people from other countries, read

foreign writers in the original, which makes your outlook wider.

To know languages today is absolutely necessary for every educated person,

for every good specialist. The English language is a wonderful language. It is the

language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare,

Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens. The great German poet Goethe, a

friend of Friedrich Schiller, once said, “He, who knows no foreign language, does

not know his own one”. That is why in order to understand oneself and

environment one has to study foreign languages.

So, the goal of my project work is to create a set of training exercises in the

exam format on the works of F.Schiller in English and German, the native

language of the writer.

Project objectives –

1) to study the biography of a German writer Friedrich Schiller,

2) to analyze the work "The Glove" in the original language and in its Russian

and English translations,

3) to create a set of exercises in German and English to help students prepare

for the exam.

Thus, the subject of the project – the works of F. Schiller, based on the

ballade "The Glove».

The object - a set of exercises in German and English to help pupils prepare

for the exam (GIA).

The topic of learning foreign languages is relevant nowadays as English has

become the world’s most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural

relations. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It is the language of

computer technology.3

Friedrich Schiller

Born in 1759 in the little duchy of Würtemberg, Friedrich von Schiller was

the son of an army officer. Although the young boy disliked the strict

regimentation of his father's chosen profession, he was forced by the Duke of

Würtemberg to enter a military academy. Trapped and overcome with depression,

Schiller began to compose morbid poetry. He found some comfort in these literary

diversions, but after composing his first play “The Robbers” (1782) Schiller's

writing was discovered by his superiors, and he was forbidden to write. The young

dramatist quickly determined to desert the army and flee to Mannheim where he

lived under an assumed name and made his living as a court playwright and stage

manager. During this period, he penned such plays as “Fiesko” (1783), “Intrigue

and Love” (1784) and “Don Carlos” (1787).

Between 1787 and 1798, Schiller wrote no plays, instead devoting himself to

historical studies “The Revolt of the Netherlands” and “A History of the Thirty

Years War” which won him fame as a historian. In 1794, however, Schiller

established a close friendship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Under Goethe's

influence, Schiller soon returned his attentions to the craft of playwriting and,

during the period that followed, composed his most mature dramas including

“Wallenstein's Camp” (1798), “The Piccolomini” (1799), “Wallenstein's Death”

(1799), “Mary Stuart” (1800), “The Maid of Orleans” (1801), and “William Tell”

(1804.) In 1799, he took up residence in Weimar where he and Goethe collaborated

to make the Weimar Theatre one of the most prestigious theatrical houses in

Germany.

On May 9, 1805, Friedrich Schiller died of tuberculosis. He was only forty-

six years old. His plays, however, along with those of Goethe, had established a

theatrical renaissance in Germany which would become known as "Weimar

Classicism." For more than a century after his death, Schiller remained the favorite

playwright of the German people.

The Project “Language Practice with F. Schiller”

Let us be honest teenagers nowadays learn foreign languages mainly to pass

the Unified State Exam. It is worth saying that this subject will soon become an

obligatory one. A lot of control and diagnostic papers are carried out in each school

to prepare for the exam. And it is really important now, as the result of your

examinations will affect your future life.

But do not forget that students are still children. Works of this format should

motivate to action, be interesting and effective.

While on vacation with my aunt in Germany, we visited one of the nearest

museums – it was the house-Museum of Friedrich Schiller.

The “Schillerhaus” is considered as being the oldest well-preserved

farmhouse in the region of Leipzig. The house was built as animal stalls with

accompanying dwellings in 1717, then transformed and used for summer guests.

Friedrich Schiller (1759 – 1805) lived here from May to September 1785. The then

25-year old poet, who had already become famous due to his play “The Robbers”,

spent many happy days here among his circle of friends. Here, Friedrich Schiller

wrote his “Ode to Joy” and worked on “Don Carlos”.In 1841, the Leipzig democrat Robert Blum established the Schiller memorial

here. In summer, the idyllic famer’s garden provides a wonderful setting for

concerts, readings and theatre performances.

Der große deutsche Dichter F. Schiller ist der Autor der bekannten Gedichte,

Balladen, Dramen. Er steht in der ersten Reihe der genialen Dramatiker und

Dichter der Weltliteratur. Er ist einer der beliebtesten Schriftsteller der

progressiven Menschheit.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller wurde am 10. November 1759 in dem

kleinen Stadtchen Marbach am Neckar geboren.

I was so impressed by the excursion that, returning home, decided to study his

life, to get acquainted with the works of the author. I was also pleased that in the

list of literature for the 6th grade there was that writer with the work "The Glove".

After reading the translation of V. Zhukovsky, I decided to study the ballad in

the original and also in English, as my main foreign language at school is English.

I was struck by a completely different poetic sound, a variety of expressive means

of speech.

Here are some extracts from the ballade in three different languages:

The lion and tiger between.

Being in the atmosphere of classical poetry, I decided to create a set of

interesting tasks in the format of the exam for my classmates. I wanted them to

love F. Schiller and classical literature in general and thus, help them be ready for

the exam.

The results of the project work

I should say that working on this project I expanded my knowledge of foreign

languages and got acquainted with the format of examination tasks.

One of the stages of my project work was the testing of these exercises on the

students of my school. The diagram in the Appendix shows our results. There are

no bad marks for the tasks.

We also made a game in Kahoot (see screen shots Appendix).

The developed set of tasks can be used in the classroom, in preparation for the

Olympiads and with self-study work.

Der grosse deutsche Dichter F. Schiller ist der Autor der bekannten Gedichte,

Balladen, Dramen. Er steht in der ersten Reihe der genialen Dramatiker und

Dichter der Weltliteratur. Er ist einer der beliebtesten Schriftsteller der

progressiven Menschheit.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller wurde am 10. November 1759 in dem

kleinen Stadtchen Marbach am Neckar geboren.

Gegenwartig befindet sich in Marbach das Schiller- Nationalmuseum.

Schillers Eltern waren einfache Leute. Der kleine, krankliche Fritz wurde im

Geiste Pietat erzogen. Die Mutter las ihm aus der Bibel, auch Marchen,Gedichte

und Geschichten vor. Als Kind lernte Schiller Latein und Griechisch.Als Schiller 9

Jahre alt war, besuchte er zum ersten Mal ein Theater. Er traumte davon, auch

solche Werke zu schreiben. Schillers Familie lebte im Lande Wurttemberg

(Marbach). Hier herrschten feudaler Despotismus und Tyrannei.

Herzog Karl-Eugen von Wurttemberg befahl dem Vater Schillers, seinen

Sohn in die Offizierschule nach Stuttgart zu schicken. Diese Schule hiess “

Karlsschule”. Schiller sollte da Medizin studieren, obwohl er sich dafur nicht

interessierte. In der Schule herrschte strenge Militardisziplin. Schiller war oft

krank und befand sich im Lazarett.Trotz des strengen Verbots las da Schiller viele

schone Bucher. In stillen Nachten schrieb er Gedichte und las sie seinen

Kameraden vor. In diesen Gedichten sprach er begeistert von der Freiheit.

Nachts schuf Schiller heimlich sein erstes Drama “Die Rauber”.

1780 durfte Schiller die Militarakademie verlassen und bekam Regimentsarzt.

Im September 1782 fluchtete Schiller aus Stuttgart ins Dorf Bauerbach. Hier

schrieb er Drama “Kabale und Liebe”. Dieses Drama ist der Hohepunkt des

Schaffens von Schiller, das beste Werk der deutschen Literatur.

In 1784 wurde dieses Drama gestellt, wurde mit Begeisterung aufgenommen.

Das Drama war gegen Tyrannei und fur Liebe und Humanismus.

Im April 1785 folgte Schiller nach Leipzig. Hier schrieb er das Hymnus “An

die Freude”. 1787 traf Schiller in Weimar ein. Er interessierte zur deisen Zeit fur

antike Literatur. Fast 10 Jahre dichtete er nichts.

Im Jahre 1789 wurde Schiller als Professor an die Universitat Jena berufen.

Im Jahre 1791 erkrankte er schwer an Tuberkulose. Doch arbeitete er bis 14

Jahre. Im Jahre 1795 schrieb Schiller einen Zyklus der Gedichte zu

philosophischen Themen. Er schrieb lyrische Gedichte auch. Die Ballade „Der

Handschuh“ gehört zu einem der meist zitierten Werke deutscher Dichtkunst.

Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg, as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß. They also had five daughters. Schiller grew up in a very religious family and spent much of his youth studying the Bible. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. When the war ended in 1763, the family moved to the nearby Lorch where Schiller received primary education.

In 1773 Friedrich Shiller entered the Karlsschule Stuttgart (an elite military academy founded by the Duke), where he eventually studied medicine.

While at the Karlsschule, Schiller read Rousseau and Goethe and discussed Classical ideals with his classmates. At school, he started writing his world-famous plays.

"The Glove"

The king with nobles gathered on the show to watch the battle between wild animals. The first to enter the arena was a huge lion, which soon lay down on the ground. Then came the brave tiger, but, seeing a stronger opponent, did not start fighting. Then two leopards ran out but didn`t attack the lion as well.

Among the audience there was the young beauty Kunigunda, wishing to check the feelings of her knight Delorge, and at the same time have fun. The lady threw her glove into the arena, which fell right between the wild animals. Kunigunda asked the knight to bring her glove and he could not refuse because of strong feelings to her.

Surprisingly, the animals did not touch Delorge and so he brought the glove to his lady. As the knight realized that Kunigunda was not in love with him, Delorge did not ask for gratitude.

Reading a ballad, you involuntarily think about the true value of love and life.

A Hier trat der junge Schiller 1767 in die Lateinschule ein. Dann besuchte er die Militärschule. Schiller studierte die Rechte. Dann wechselte Schiller zur Medizin über, die ihn mehr interessierte als die Jurisprudenz.

B 1795 erschienen die Gedichte «Das Glück», «Die ldeale», «Der Spaziergang» und Вalladen: «Der Taucher». «Der Handschuh»: «Die Kraniche des Ibykus», Schiller begann die Arbeit an der Trilogie «Wallenstein». 

C 1787 siedelte Schiller nach Weimar über, Weimar war Mittelpunkt des damaligen literarischen Deutschlands. Bei Wieland und Herder fand er Verständnis . Während dieser Zeit setzte er die geschichtlichen Studien fort. 1788 hatte Schiller die erste Aussprache mit Goethe. 

D Ende 1799 siedelte der Dichter von Jena nach Weimar über. Hier setzte er die Zusammenarbeit mit Goethe fort. Nun folgte Werk auf Werk. 1800 wurde das Drama «Maria Stuart» vollendet. 1801 entstand die romantische Tragödie «Die Jungfrau von Orleans». 1801 wohnte er einer Aufführung dieses Dramas in Leipzig bei, es wurde mit Begeisterung aufgenommen. Danach begann er den «Wilhelm Tell», es war das letzte Drama, das Schiller vollenden konnte.
