This program is designed to provide the basic-level training needed to correctly install and maintain the Muratec MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590 multi-functional products. This training program is for technicians who install and service the Muratec MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590.

Training Goals

As a technician, you are responsible for installing, programming, and maintaining the MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590. Using this program, you will learn how to:

• Install and setup the unit.

• Program the initial settings for normal use.

• Understand the mechanical operation of the major systems and sub-systems.

• Use the diagnostic resources including error messages and test modes.

• Explain the available options.

Technical Assessment

After you’ve worked through all the sections of this program, you can apply your knowledge in the Certification Test.

Print out and complete the Certification Test. The questions on the test cover all of the sections that provided you information on the MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590. If you are unsure of an answer, you can return to any section in the program.

Upon completion of the Certification Test, fax it along with the cover page to (469) 429-3465. You will be notified of your results and issued a certificate with a passing grade of 70% or better.

Machine Installation

Introduction

There are many programs and features available on the MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590. Some of these should be performed during the installation of the machine, and some can be performed at a later time as they become necessary.

This section of the training program will cover how to set the unit up and the basic initial programming.

The unit is shipped with a CD containing six operator manuals:

Each manual contains detailed operational and setting procedures related to that particular section of the unit. Please refer to each manual for additional information.

The Steps to Setup the Machine

Listed below are the steps to set the unit up, install the supplies, connect the unit and perform the initial programming. Please refer to appropriate manual for additional information.

Step 1: Unlock the Mirror Carriage

Important: In order to avoid damaging the unit, the machine scanner is locked prior to shipping. If you need to relocate the machine, lock the scanner prior to moving it. To lock the scanner, please use the reverse process of the instructions.

1. Slide the scanner locking knob to the back until it clicks in the unlock position.

Step 2: Install the Drum Cartridge

2. Unpack the drum cartridge from its cartonand slide it into the machine until it locksinto place.

1. Open the side cover and front cover.

Drum Yield – 30,000 pages (Letter, 2-page print cycle)

Step 3: Install the Toner Cartridge

1. Turn the toner cartridge lever to the left (unlock position).

2. Unpack the toner cartridge from the carton. Gently shake the cartridge to distribute the toner.

Toner Yield – 16,000 pages (Letter, 6%, 2-page print cycle)

Step 3: Install the Toner Cartridge

3. Slide the toner cartridge into the machine until it locks into place.

4. Turn the locking lever to the right until it locks into place. Close the front cover.


Acceptable paper for the cassette:

1. Pull the handle to open the paper cassette.

2. Press down the paper lifting plate until it locks in position.

3. Adjust the rear paper guide to the desired paper length.


4. Load the paper into the cassette.

5. Pinch the side paper guide and adjust the width of the stack.


6. When setting the paper longer then Letter size, remove the guide stopper from the back of the end guide, and then replace and secure it on the grove in front of the end guide (the guide stopper will be under the paper).

Step 5: Connecting the Cables

Connecting the Modular Cable:

1. Attach two ferrite cores to the modular cable. Make three loops for each ferrite core near the connector of the cable.

2. Connect the modular cable to the telephone LINE jack.

Step 6: Turn the Power On

The machine has both a “main power switch” and “power switch”.Turning the Power ON:

1. Switch the main power switch to ON (I).

The machine has three power-related switches; the main power switch, the power switch and Energy Save.

Step 6: Turning the Power On

2. Press the power switch to turn the machine ON.

Step 7: Turn Off the Transport Mode

1. The machine will show the following message. This indicates the machine is in the transport mode. To turn off the transport mode, press SETTING, *, 1, 4, then select OFF.

Step 8: Energy Save Mode1. Select the Energy Save Mode start time.

No Low Power mode : 1 minute

Sleep Mode : 1 minute

Yes Lower Power Mode : 15 minutes

Sleep Mode : 60 minutes

Step 9: Setting the Paper Size

After loading paper into the paper cassette / bypass tray, you need to set the correct paper size on the control panel by using the following procedure.

1. Press SETTING.

2. Press PAPER SETTINGS.

(Cassette 2 appears only when the optional 2nd cassette has been installed.)

4. Select the paper size, and press ENTER.

Step 10: Clear User Data

It is recommended a “User Data Clear” be performed before beginning programming. User programmed information such as address book entries, date, time, Transmit Terminal Identifier, Subscriber ID, etc, are in the unit’s Random Access Memory (RAM) and on the CF memory card. This does not clear machine parameters, memory switches, unique switches or counters.

1. Press SETTING, *, 0, 2.

2. Press YES.


Certain User Data must be programmed into the unit before using. These “minimum requirements” can be located the User Install program. Items such Time and Date, Receive Mode, TTI, Subscriber ID, etc. must be programmed before using the unit or sending a fax.

The difference between the NGP and 25x0 is the process speed. The NGP works with one speed, but the 25x0 works with two speeds.Excluding some conditions, 25x0 works basically with 140.8mm/sec.If the width of paper narrower than A4 or Letter, the 25x0 works with 76.7mm/sec.If the length of paper is shorter than A5-R or Half-Letter-R, 25x0 works with 76.7mm/sec (including all size of pasteboard, post card and envelope too).

Introduction

Some MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590 problems may be diagnosed by observing the machine’s performance, but communication and signal problems are more difficult to identify.

The unit’s are equipped with resources to help identify errors and to allow control of certain machine functions and settings. Some of these resources include:

LCD Error Messages – User Error Messages the user can correct and Service Call Errors that require a technician’s help.

Error Reports / Error Codes – Printed reports showing dialing, reception, or transmission error codes and the possible cause for the error.

Field Service Program Modes – Test modes that allow adjustments to machine settings and the ability to perform diagnostic tests. Using one or a combination of the resources, many machine problems can be diagnosed to a specific cause or faulty part.

When certain machine problems occur, the LCD will show a “Lamp error. Call For Service” message. “Lamp error. Call For Service” indicates the scannre LED is dim or inoperable.

If an error occurs during a communication, a “Check Message” will be printed. The following provides an explanation of the information found on the check messages.

• A possible solution to the problem• The date and time of the attempted communication• The sending Location (if the remote fax has a Location ID)• The number of pages which got through before the error terminated the call• The error Code• The sample document

Field Service Program Modes


The units feature test modes that allow adjustments to machine settings and the ability to perform diagnostic tests. Using one or a combination of these, many machine problems can be diagnosed to a specific cause or faulty part.

This section list some of the resources available. Refer to the Service Manual for a complete listing and explanation.


Machine Parameters Setting, *, 0, 0Used to set or clear machine parameters.

Memory Switches Setting, *, 0, 1Used to set or clear memory switches.

Unique Switches Setting, *, 0, 4Used to set or clear Unique switches.

The soft switches (Machine Parameters, Memory Switches, and Unique Switches) are used to program the machine’s internal parameters. Soft switches may need to be adjusted to solve dialing problems and communication problems that occur during transmission or reception. Adjustments to the parameters for printing are also needed when print registration is incorrect and to parameters for scanning when scan position is incorrect.


User Data Clear Setting, *, 0, 2

User programmed information such as address book entries, date, time, TTI, Subscriber ID, etc., are stored in the unit’s Random Access Memory (RAM) and on the CF memory card on the network board. This function does not clear the soft switches or counters. It is recommended a User Data Clear be performed during installation

All RAM Clear Setting, *, 0, 3

The All RAM Clear setting will erase all user programmed information, all documents in memory and reset the memory switches and unique switches to factory defaults. This function may also be used to try and clear a machine malfunction or lock up. If possible, when a All RAM Clear is used, it is advisable to print the machine settings, address book entries to help in reprogramming this information.

T.30 Monitor Print Setting, *, 0, 5

This mode causes the unit to print a G3 procedural summary of the last fax communication. The communications on the journal list are also able to be printed out.

This mode is used in the following cases:

1. When the Fuser Unit and / or Transfer Roller have been replaced use this mode to increment the number of Fuser Units and / or Transfer Rollers replaced as shown in the Life Monitor.



2. When “Checkout error : xx” message appears in the display, use this mode to determine the cause.

3. The unit is capable of sending an email notification to preprogrammed locations when the “Checkout error : xx” condition occurs. Use this mode to enable this feature and register the email locations.


Service Report Printing Setting, *, 0, 7

This mode allows the Service Report to be printed from the control panel at any time. This function is useful for the technician to print out to obtain the machine’s usage, counts, and error history.

Monitor Speaker Setting, *, 0, 8

This mode allows the transmit and receive fax communication to be heard through the unit’s monitor speaker. This function is useful for diagnosing dialing and communication problems.


Test Modes Setting, *, 0, 9

This mode offers the ability to view counters, print test patterns and perform diagnostic tests. Included are:

• Life Monitor• Test Pattern Print• Feeder Test • Background Level• Make Color Gamma• Select Color Gamma


Life Monitor

The Life Monitor displays the current firmware revisions, total number of pages scanned, printed, and transmitted, the number of drums replaced and the total page count on the current drum.

• ROM Ver.0 – displays main control board software revision• ROM Ver.1 – displays network software (Office Bridge) version• ROM Ver.2 – displays PDL (printer description language) version


Life Monitor

Pressing DETAIL will display the following:


Test Pattern Print

The Printer Test mode offers 10 different test patterns. When executing the printer test, the cassette or tray can be selected and the number of pages can be entered.


Feeder Test

The Feeder Test discharges all documents in the automatic document feeder (ADF) at a constant speed. The number of pages feed through the feeder will be displayed.


Background Level

The background level is an established threshold used to help measure the reflective ability of a scanned document. This threshold can change if the scanner LED, scanner assembly (CCD), or Main Control Board is replaced. Use this mode to reset the threshold when these items are changed. The Background Level modes allows the threshold level to be set without erasing memory.


Make Color Gamma

The machine has a color gamma data table for color scanning correction. The color gamma table adjusts the RGB color balance and is unique per machine because of optical variations. Both the main control board and compact flash memory card keep the color gamma data table.

This mode is used to make the color gamma data table.

This mode should be performed when the LED is changed and when the main control board and compact flash card are changed at the same time.

A special test chart is required to perform this procedure.

Note: Because the color gamma data table is stored on both the main control board and compact flash card, this procedure should not have to be performed as long as the main control board and compact flash card are not changed at the same time (see Select Color Gamma).


Select Color Gamma

The machine uses a color gamma data table for color scanning correction. The same data is stored on the main control board and compact flash card. If either the main control board or compact flash card, perform this procedure to remake the data table from one to the other.


Print Parameters Settings Setting, *, 1, 0

This mode prints a list of the machine parameters, switch settings and unique switches showing the default settings and current settings.

Factory Functions Setting, *, 1, 1

This mode provides several diagnostic tests. Include are the following:

LED Test Lights all the LED lamps on the control panel.

LCD Test Displays test patterns on the LCD to check for inoperable pixels.

Panel Test Displays the key name on the LCD when the control panel keys are pressed.

SRAM Test Checks if the SRAM is working (fax numbers are garbled).

DRAM Test Checks if the DRAM is working.

RTC Test Factory use only.

Page Memory Test Checks if the paper memory is working (printed images are wrong))

Pseudo Ring Checks the bell of the external telephone and pseudo ring)

Line Tests Setting, *, 1, 2This modes offers several internal tests and the ability to monitor certain output functions. Includes are Relay Test, Tonal Signal Test and DTMF Output Test.

Relay Test – Tests the relays in the NCU board.

Tonal Signal – Tests the modem by outputting communication signal through the unit’s speaker.

DTMF Output – Tests the modem by outputting DTMF tones through the unit’s speaker.


Mirror Carriage Transfer Mode Setting, *, 1, 4

The unit is shipped with the mirror carriage locked to protect the mirror carriage. When installing the unit, slide the scanner locking lever back to the unlocked position. Turn the power on and perform this function. Reverse this process when transporting the unit or re-shipping.


Consumable Order Sheet Setting, *, 1, 5When the unit’s drum cartridge is near the end of its designed life or the toner cartridge is near empty, the unit can print, fax or email a Consumable Order Sheet to programmed destinations alerting the recipitants the drum is near end or the toner is almost empty. The report also lists the drum life, total page count and main control board firmware revision.

This mode is used to program, clear and manual print the Consumable Order Sheet.

DRAM Clear Setting, *, 1, 6This mode is used to clear the contents of the unit’s DRAM. Any documents currently stored in DRAM will be erased. This should also be performed when additional memory is added.

Life Monitor Maintenance - Initialize Setting, *, 2, 0This mode is used to clear the internal counters of the unit. The following counters will be cleared:

• Scanned pages per mode (copy / scan / fax / print)• Scanned times per mode (copy / scan / fax)• Pages per scanner part (ADF / FBS)• Times per scanner part (ADF / FBS)• Scanner jam information • Print pages per cassette• Jammed pages per cassette• Jammed pages per print part

Life Monitor Maintenance – Reentering Setting, *, 2, 0The unit stores the life monitor counter values on the main control board. This mode is used to reenter life monitor values when the main control board. The following items can be reentered:

• Number of drum replacement• Number of times the drum cartridge has been replaced

• Drum rotation time• How long the drum has rotated (x 10 seconds)

• Number of pages after drum replaced• Printed pages on the current drum cartridge

• Number of pages after drum caution• Pages printed after the “Drum Near End” message

• Number of toner replacements• Number of times the toner cartridge has been replaced

•Toner rotation time• Time the toner agitator has rotated (x 10 seconds)


• Number of pages after toner replaced• Pages on the current toner cartridge

• Number of pages after toner caution• Pages after the “Toner almost empty” message

• Fuser Replaced Count • Number of times the fuser has been replaced

• Fuser Life• The total time the current fuser has been working ( x 10 seconds)

Sensor Input Test Setting, *, 2, 2

This mode can confirm the status of the unit’s sensors and switches. When the switch or sensor is activated, the value next to the sensor or switch changes from OFF to ON or from ON to OFF.


Printer diagnostic mode Setting, *, 2, 3

This mode is used to confirm the operation of motors, clutches, etc. of the printer section. The following items can be activated:


Network Service Mode Setting, *, 2, 4

This mode is used to clear the administrator’s password and to initialize the authentication mode (return it to factory default).


Flash ROM Sum check Setting, *, 2, 9This modes allows the Flash ROM Check Sum to be verified after the software is updated.

Service Report Setting Setting, *, 4, 2This mode is used to program the unit to send a one page (simple) or multiple page (detailed) report via email or fax to preregistered locations at a designated time and date.This function is useful for obtaining monthly meter readings and counts.

Printer Registration Adjustment Setting, *, 4, 3

(See adjustment section later in this section)

Reset Printer Trouble Setting, *, 4, 5

This mode clears the service call error. Use this mode to clear the error message when the problem has been corrected.


Cleaning Mode Setting, *, 4, 6

This mode is used to rotate the pickup roller and registration roller automaticallyso they can be cleaned.


Key Counter Setting, *, 5, 0

If an external key counter has been attached to the unit, activate this mode to let the key counter count the pages.


Network Switch Mode Setting, *, 5, 1

This mode is used to adjust network parameters related to Office Bridge. Refer to the Service Manual for a complete listing of the switches.


Touch Panel Adjustment Setting, *, 5, 6This mode is used to calibrate the touch panel. It may be necessary to adjust the touch panel if the LCD Display or Panel PCB has been changed.

Printer Control Parameter Mode Setting, *, 5, 7This mode is used to adjust parameters related to the optional Print Controller. Refer to the Service Manual for a complete listing of the switches.


Network Capture Setting, *, 5, 8

This mode is used to capture the packet data the machine has sent and received, and download it from the web browser or send it to an email address.

When you read the data using a packet analyzing tool such as “tcpdump”, you can use it as a tool to detect the cause if transmission problems.

There are two methods to capture the packet data: from the web browser and from the unit’s control panel.

Refer to the Service Manual for complete instructions.


Storage Maintenance Setting, *, 5, 9

The storage on the Office Bridge is a compact flash (CF) memory card. The following operations are available with this mode:

Erasing Storage: Erases all data stored on the CF memory card and disables it.

Resetting Storage: Initialize the CF memory card. When the machine ROM is updated using the USB memory, the CF card is available again.


Service Function Menu Setting, *, 7, 7

This modes allows all the field service modes to be displayed from one menu.


Wire Cleaning Warning Setting, *, 8, 6

This mode is used to set the interval to display the drum charge wire and LED Print Head cleaning warning message. (hour = drum rotation)

Installing Language Setting, *, 9, 9

This mode is used to install, edit, or delete languages from a USB memory device.


Counter Information Maintenance Setting, *, 9, 3

The machine stores the counter data and serial number on both the SRAM (main control board) and CF memory card (network board). If these numbers do not match (e.g. one of the boards was replaced), use this mode to synchronize the counter data and serial number between the SRAM (main control board) and CF memory card.


Update the Software Setting, *, 9, 8

There are 3 items that can updated:

1. Main Control Board2. Network Board3. PCL Board

There are 3 methods of updating the firmware:

1. Using a USB memory device (Auto Update / Manual Update)2. Over the network (from the control panel)3. Over the network (using the web browser)

The firmware cannot be updated in the following situations:

1. The machine is in use (scanning, faxing, printing, etc.)2. There are documents stored in memory


Method 1: Updating the Software using a USB Memory Device - Auto Update The firmware must be on the USB memory device in a specific format:

“Boot” folder

Method 1: Updating the Software using a USB Memory Device – Auto Update

Save only one firmware in each folder.Auto Update is not available when two or more firmware versions are stored on the USB memory device.

Auto Update procedure:

1. Turn the unit off.2. Connect the USB memory device.3. Turn the unit on.4. When the display shows “Firmware Updating OK”, turn the unit OFF and ON.

The update process will take approximately 8 minutes.


Method 1: Updating the Software using a USB Memory Device – Manual UpdateThis method of updating allows the technician to update with the latest version or specify a earlier version. This method allows two or more firmware versions to be stored on the USB memory device.

Manual Update procedure:

1. Connect the USB memory device to the unit.2. Press “Setting, 9, 8”.3. Press “Update from the USB”.

Adjustments - Registration

Printer, FBS (Flatbed Scanner), and ADF (Automatic Document Feeder)

When the machine produces a printed image that is not centered on the page, but has shifted to the left, top, right, or bottom, adjustments may be needed to the printer, FBS or ADF. These adjustments compensate for the alignment by moving the image on the page to the correct margins.

Determining which items need to be adjusted (printer, FBS, or ADF) is done with the test pattern print. A test pattern print is straight from memory, so if it is skewed, it is a printer adjustment (as no scanning was involved). If the test pattern print is aligned correctly, but a copy of the test pattern (made with the scanner) is not, then an adjustment needs to be made on the ADF and FBS.

Once it has been determined whether it is a printer or scanner adjustment that’s needed, the appropriate corrective action can be chosen.

Adjustments - Printer Registration

Outline of printer registration adjustment:

1. Adjust the printer registration of the first cassette.

2. Adjust the zoom and scan position for the ADF and FBS.

3. After performing step 1 and 2, adjust the printer position for each cassette.

Printer registration adjustment procedure:

• Printout the Ladder Test pattern from the first cassette.• Press, Setting, *, 0, 9, then select Test Pattern Print.• Select the D-Like test pattern.• Select the paper source, number of prints, and press Yes.

2 Make sure that the test pattern has a 0.12+/- 0.08 inch (3 +/- 2mm) margin on

both top and side.

3. If the margin is not correct, proceed to step 4. If the margin is correct, this step

is complete.


4. To adjust the printer registration:1. Press Setting, *, 4, 3.

2. Select the paper source (cassette) to be adjusted.

3. Select Vertical Registration or Horizontal Registration.


4. Adjust the printer registration

Example:

When set to +12.3 for vertical registration, the printing image moves 12.3mm downward. If set to –12.3, the printing image moves 12.3 mm upward.

When set to +12.3 for horizontal registration, the printing image moves 12.3 mm to the right If set to –12.3, the printing image moves 123 mm to the left.

The adjustment range is between -127 mm and +127 mm.

5. Press ENTER to save the setting.

6. Press RESET to return to standby.

Scanner zoom adjustment procedure:

The zoom adjustments should be made after adjusting the printer registration (top and side) of the1st cassette.

FBS zoom adjustment (vertical)• Make two copies of a test chart.• Compare the vertical length of the second copy to the original.• If the length falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 017 to make

the necessary adjustment.• If the length is shorter, increase the value.• If the length is longer, decrease the value.

FBS zoom adjustment (horizontal)• Make 2 copies of a test chart. • Compare the horizontal width of the second copy to the original.• If the width falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 016 to make

the necessary adjustments.• If the length is shorter, increase the value.

• If the length is longer, decrease the value.


Scanner zoom adjustment procedure:

ADF zoom adjustment (vertical)• Make 2 copies of a test chart.• Compare the vertical length of the second copy to the original.• If the length falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 012 to

make the necessary adjustments.• If the length is shorter, increase the value.• If the length is longer, decrease the value.

ADF zoom adjustment (horizontal)• Make 2 copies of a test chart.• Compare the horizontal width of the second copy to the original.• If the width falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 011 to

make the necessary adjustments.• If the length is shorter, increase the value.• If the length is longer, decrease the value.


Scanner adjustment procedure:

The scanner registration adjustments should be made after adjusting the printer registration (top and side) and zoom adjustments (horizontal and vertical) have been made.

FBS registration (top)• Make a copy of a test chart.• Compare the start point of print of the copy to the original.• If it falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 018 to make the necessary adjustments.• If the width is shorter, decrease the value.• If the width is longer, increase the value.

FBS registration (side)• Make a copy of a test chart.• Compare the start point of print of the copy to the original.• If it falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 015 to make the necessary adjustments.• If the width is shorter, increase the value.• If the width is longer, decrease the value.


Scanner adjustment procedure:

ADF registration (top)• Make a copy of a test chart.• Compare the start point of print of the copy to the original.• If it falls outside the specified range, use Machine Parameter 013 to make the

Introduction

Some mechanical and electrical problems can only be corrected by replacing a part inside the machine. To replace these parts, you may first need to remove covers, connectors, guides, etc. This section does not cover replacing parts of the machine, but the gives an overview of the machine’s major components. For complete disassembly instructions on how to replace all the unit’s parts, refer to the MFX-2550, MFX-2570 and MFX-2590 Service Manual.

Tools

You may need the following tools to replace parts:

• Phillps-Head screwdrivers• Flat-Head Screwdrivers• Pliers• Diagonal Cutters• Spring Hook Tool

Caution: Always turn off the power before replacing parts.

Disconnect the AC power cord.

Disconnect the telephone cord from the machine.

Remove the toner cartridge from the unit.

Remove the drum cartridge from the unit and cover with a black cloth.
