    Bandhan marked its entry into themicrofinance (MF) world in July2002.

    Started with 3 staff (including myself)and 1 branch office in Howrahdistrict in the state of West Bengal.

    It had disbursed a total of Rs.3,686.61 crores (737.32 millionUS$) and loan outstanding standsat Rs. 1,079.93 crore (215.99

    million US$).

    OrganizationalBackground

    Bandhan (meaning togetherness) wasborn in 2001 under the leadership ofMr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, a Senior

    Ashoka Fellow. The main thrust of Bandhan is to work

    with women who are sociallydisadvantaged and economically

    exploited, for their social upliftmentand economic emancipation.

    THP(Targeting the Hard CorePoor)

    The hard -core poor is the poorest sectionamongst the population with a few or no assetbase, highly vulnerable to any shocks andmainly depending on wage labor, begging etc.

    Bandhan decided to reach out to the hard corepoor through its piloting program calledChartering into Un ventured Frontiers-

    Targeting the Hard Core Poor (CUF-THP).

    The program (24 months duration) has been so

    designed that the initial tasks involved will betracking these hard core poor throughParticipatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), whereinthe village community collectively selects theneediest women.

    THP(Targeting the Hard CorePoor)

    The program is effective since January2007.

    The program is running in 22 branches

    across eight districts of West Bengal,India and reaching out to 2,068 hardcore poor families .

    In terms of funding, it has receivedsome grant money from CGAP,TheFord Foundation & The Michael andSusan Dell Foundation.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology,USA has been associated with the

    BEP(Bandhan EducationProgram)

    With a view to bring about a distinctimprovement in this regard, Bandhandecided to introduce Non FormalEducation Program (Primary).

    Aiming to ensure that all poor children in acommunity receive primary educationalfacilities.

    The program also aims to ensure 100%

    attendance of students enrolled in theschools and reduce their 100%dependence on private tutors.

    This led to the setting up of10 schools in

    South 24 Parganas in West Bengal, India

    BEP(Bandhan EducationProgram)

    Bandhan establishes small schoolswhich have up to 33 students, whoare taught by an educational

    facilitator. The facilitators are selected from the

    community itself.

    The facilitator's duty is to ensure that

    The goal of this project is to reducethe health expenditure of poorfamilies and to ensure easy

    accessibility to health care servicesavailable at governmental and non-governmental levels in a sustainablemanner.

    This also maintains the borrower'sability to repay the loan, help themincrease their enterprises and also

    contributes to sustaining themicrofinance ro ram of Bandhan.

    BLDP(Bandhan LivelihoodDevelopment Program )

    Bandhan promises a greener worldthrough production of100000saplings (consisting of timber and

    fruits) in 2009-10. The program would be implemented

    across 100 branches, targeting atleast one beneficiary in each branch.

    Each beneficiary will be encouraged togrow 50,000 saplings in nursery byproviding all kinds of necessary

    supports.

    Bandhan collaborates withTally IndiaPvt Ltd and HSBC under the Schemefor Skill Development for the

    Registered Job seekers for tackling theunemployment scenario in WestBengal.

    Bengal.
