3MLC ANNUAL REPORT 2020

In early 2019, Methodist Ladies’ College with Principal, Dr Marie Perry released an updated version of our strategic plan, Towards 2025. Central to this is our strategic focus on individual care and enabling every girl to thrive. Despite the unprecedented nature of 2020, the College’s focus on innovation, inclusivity and excellence are strongly evidenced daily via not only our students’ performance, but our whole of school community companionship.

Our holistic programme is underpinned by a strong focus on pastoral care to ensure our students are supported on their learning journey. This care also extends to our parents and guardians. Due to the wide-reaching effects COVID-19 has had on our community, many Methodist Ladies’ College families were impacted by unforeseen economic circumstances. As Council Chair, I was very pleased that the College provided 150 families with varying forms of fee relief, during Term 2 of 2020, via the MLC Community Fund. It has been comforting to be able to support our community in this way and families who needed our help have shared their immense gratitude.

During 2020, the College Council and the College Leadership Team focused intensely on providing a seamless educational experience for all MLC girls. Our highly valued staff were well supported as they continued with their education duties in varied formats, while ensuring the inclusive MLC student experience was upheld.

Despite the many challenges of the year, community generosity continued through the MLC Foundation, which has for many years created strong philanthropic bonds that support the College. Via initiatives such as Circle of Success, we have seen areas of the College blossom into innovative and interactive spaces for students and staff to enjoy.

Finally, last year we farewelled long-serving MLC Foundation Board Chair, Mr James McClements. We sincerely thank James for more than 11 years of commitment, dedication and generosity to the school through the Foundation. I warmly welcome Professor Jonathan Carapetis AM as the new Chair of the MLC Foundation. Jonathan is a renowned leading mind in Australian health and medical research, with particular expertise in Indigenous and child health, and is the Executive Director at the Telethon Kids Institute.

MR NICK HENRY

“At MLC, our holistic programme is underpinned by a strong focus on pastoral care to ensure our students are supported on their learning journey.”

INTRODUCTION BY CHAIR OF COUNCIL

Page 4: METHODIST LADIES’ COLLEGE ANNUAL REPORT 2020

“The well-deserved academic results that our 2020 Year 12 cohort achieved were exceptional despite the many challenges they were dealt across their final year of schooling.”

It goes without saying that 2020 brought exceptional challenges for everyone, from droughts, bushfires and floods, to the immense impact of COVID-19. However, in the face of adversity, in an extraordinary year, we remain committed to providing a platform for all Methodist Ladies’ College students to find their fire, via a holistic learning and teaching environment that propels girls to strive to the heights.

DIVERSITY IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY

5MLC ANNUAL REPORT 2020

I applaud our students and families of 2020 and thank them for the resilience, tenacity and positivity they brought to a plethora of learning and life experiences. While the backdrop for the curriculum was often different to what was expected of 2020, the lessons taught and learnt were many and varied. Despite the cancellation or postponement of many much-anticipated trips and experiences, such as the international music, language, academic and service tours, and many sporting and Outdoor Education trips, our students have showed great maturity in managing their disappointment alongside their friends and peers, providing support for each other as a community.

Teacher-directed online learning was embraced by necessity but demonstrated the nimble flexibility of our systems to carry on despite the challenges, as well as the commitment of our staff to continue to deliver the renowned MLC standard of learning in a virtual manner. Our temporary ‘new online normal’ was adopted by students from Kindergarten–Year 12 and was a great test of our commitment to innovation. Our Information, Learning and Technologies team was put to the test and the whole community’s technological and communication skills were developed and enhanced.

Despite capacity restrictions, COVID-19 induced cancellations and even weather challenges, our Junior Years’ students still managed to sneak in the Year 4–6 Swimming Carnival in the nick of time, giving the new MLC/CCGS Aquatic Precinct a workout. Many Assemblies progressed in person and virtually, keeping our community connected as best as possible, and we fortunately wrapped up the year being entertained by the talents of our Kindergarten–Year 6 students at the Barclay Showcase and the Christmas Concert.

There was also much to celebrate in the Senior Years. Our girls continued their commitment to fundraising and service undertaking learning such as our 5,000 Meals endeavour, seeing our boarding students lovingly preparing nutritious meals for those in need in Perth; students spending time with aged-care residents at Mercy Care; and even giving away their own hair at the annual hair chop as part of Service Week, to produce wigs for those suffering from medical conditions.

The College has a long tradition of embracing diverse learning styles, unique thinkers, leaders in the making, and celebrating outstanding success stories. Our commitment to finding the right pathway for each

student has proven to be a winning blueprint. MLC consistently ranks in the top five schools in the State and educates young women who have achieved at the highest levels and the graduating class of 2020 followed in this trend.

Highlights include:

• Two MLC students were of just 14 people in the State to achieve the perfect WACE score of 99.95;

• 99.2 per cent of eligible students achieved their Western Australian Certificate of Education;

• A median ATAR of 90.55 (state median: 81.65);

• 15 students received one or more VET Certificates, across seven courses, including nine Certificate IVs;

• Two Learning and Support Centre students graduated, having completed the ASDAN Award, Towards Independence: Photography and Multimedia and Authority Developed Workplace Learning;

• It is worth remembering that these academic results were achieved in addition to numerous co-curricular and well-being learning outcomes students made across many fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sport and the service learning.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s not to take anything for granted, be ready for change, remain adaptable, flexible and resilient in the face of adversity and to care for your community in times of hardship.

I look forward to working with the entire College community across 2021 as we continue delivering the best educational opportunities for our girls.

My sincere thanks to the tremendous MLC community for its support and enthusiasm in this most extraordinary of years.

“Our girls are fortunate to receive a holistic, first-class education at Methodist Ladies’ College”

“Women’s philanthropic leadership is fundamental to their advancement in society.” - Kaye Ballard

It’s an opportune time for women to address the inequities that make a woman’s journey towards excellence that much more challenging. Our girls are fortunate to receive a holistic, first-class education at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) and the MLC Foundation continues to support the College to enrich prospects for our girls.

In 2020, our priorities were adapted to reflect the uncertainty that resulted from the global pandemic.

The Foundation’s Constitution was modernised to support robust governance and effective operations. Following a thorough review and application process, Morgan Stanley was appointed as the Foundation’s investment manager. The Foundation invests its funds, including those received from the Foundation Future Levy, in pursuit of leveraging the impact of every dollar received.

The Fundraising Plan for 2020 was adjusted with empathy for many in our community feeling the impact of COVID. The sold-out 2020 MLC Foundation Gala was postponed and rescheduled to bring our community together at a safer time.

The 2020 Circle of Success members selected the Global Languages Hub as this year’s project – a decision that has been greatly appreciated by the girls. Year 8 students were engaged to reimagine and redesign four College spaces and pitch their plan to Circle members, who each donated $1000 to vote for their preferred project. It was terrific to see the imaginations of our students as they shared their creative ideas.

The Foundation is governed by a dedicated team of volunteers. In 2020, Grant Robinson, Member, and Kelvin Flynn, Investment Committee member, retired. I thank them for their service and commitment to the Foundation.

After 11 years at the helm of the Foundation, I retired at the end of 2020 and Professor Jonathan Carapetis was appointed as new Foundation Chair. Professor Carapetis is a current parent and a former member of College Council, who brings extensive fundraising experience to this position.

I have been fortunate to have contributed to the College Council from 2017-2019 and have chaired the MLC Foundation since 2009. My family and I see what MLC, the Foundation and the community has been able to deliver as a united force and how this makes a valuable difference for the girls. I am pleased to have been a part of the advancement of philanthropy at MLC and I am proud to see what has been made possible by the generous donation of treasure, time and talent by many members of the MLC community.

The Foundation values its donors for allowing us to support the College to achieve the best possible outcomes for girls at MLC, and I thank you for your contribution in 2020.

OUR STUDENTS

MLC continues to provide an inclusive environment which enables students to achieve their personal best. The diverse programmes of the College encourage problem solving and creative thinking. This is reflected in the excellent results of the 128 Year 12 graduates in both the 2020 Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.

WACE RESULTS

MLC Year 12 students achieved broadly across all areas of our holistic programme, from core academic courses to co-curricular activities and service-learning opportunities. Such diverse experiences are the basis of a well-rounded education. In the year that was, MLC has been able to get each and every one of our 128 students through to the end of Year 12, whether they are based in Perth and attending school on campus, or overseas and learning with MLC’s teacher-directed online learning.

NAPLAN

In an extraordinary year, the 2020 NAPLAN was cancelled due to the effects of COVID-19.

ONLINE LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT (OLNA)

The OLNA enables all West Australian students to demonstrate their standard of literacy and numeracy. Students must achieve Band 3 in these assessments to meet the minimum standard for the WA certificate of education. This assessment is not compulsory for students who have prequalified in Year 9 NAPLAN. However in 2020, due to the COVID-19 related cancellation of NAPLAN, the OLNA was implemented for all Year 9 students for the first and only time, except the Writing component which students could prequalify for based on their Year 7 NAPLAN results in 2018. A high percentage of MLC students met the requirements of all three components of the OLNA, despite sitting the assessment earlier than in previous years.
