Metabolic engineering is the improvement of cellular activities bymanipulation of enzymatic, transport, and regulatory functions ofthe cell with the use of recombinant DNA technology. Theopportunity to introduce heterologous genes and regulatoryelements distinguishes metabolic engineering from traditionalgenetic approaches to improve strains.

Metabolic Engineering

Metabolic engineering is an enabling science, and distinguishesitself from applied genetic engineering by the use of advancedanalytical tools for identification of appropriate targets for geneticmodifications and possibly even the use of mathematical modelsto perform in silico design of optimized cell factories.

Metabolic Engineering

The knockout or overexpression of genes, usually used in GeneticEngineering, frequently does not result in product yieldimprovements due a resistance in the metabolism. Therefore, abetter knowledge of the metabolism is needed to promotemetabolism engineering as a whole to improve biotechnologicalprocesses.
