WORSHIP AND CELEBRATION

A NEW LITURGY COMES THIS FALL Beginning September 7 and continuing through the autumn we will use the setting of the liturgy called Of the Land and Seasons, arranged by Beth and Stephen Folke-mer. The liturgy is based on Evangelical Lutheran texts and celebrates the rural rhythms of work and life. Much of the music is traditional folk music in style and will be accompanied by a variety of instru-ments throughout the season. In addition we will have a new set of vestments whose colors celebrate the season of autumn. The intricate pieces of silk are quilted together, employing an art from remind-ing us of rural life and work.

MESSIAH’S CHOIR Have you ever wanted to sing in a choir? Always meant to come and haven’t yet? Here’s your chance! The choir will be starting soon and we hope that you will join us! We sing (almost) every Sunday at the 10:30 service, and we rehearse at 9:15 a.m. before the service. If you have ques-tions, please speak with Gloria DeVilbiss, our choir director, or Randy Webster, our cantor and organist. Our first rehearsal is Sunday, September 7 at 9:15 a.m. in the gallery. Please join us-the coffee will be on!

SECOND SUNDAY LUNCH With the arrival of autumn we resume Second Sunday Lunch. This month our Second Sunday Lunch will be held on Sunday, September 14 immediately after the 10:30 a.m. service. The lunch 9perhaps more aptly called “dinner”) is free and donations are received to cover the cost of the dinner. We will need some help be-fore the meal and afterwards to clean up; a sign-up sheet will be in the narthex. This month we will celebrate the 80th birthday of Donna Duke at our lunch; please attend and wish her a happy birthday!

THIRD WEDNESDAY DINNER AND EUCHARIST Messiah offers a free meal every month on the third Wednesday which is followed by a simple Eucharist. This month the Third Wednesday falls on Septem-ber 17. The meal will be served at 6:15 p.m. with a short thirty-minute Eucharist around the tables at 7:00 p.m. We are encouraging our confirmands, along with their teachers, to attend. We encourage you to attend and support them. A sign-up sheet will be in the narthex to aid in preparing enough food. See you then!

MESSIAH LUNCH BUNCH will meet at Gator’s at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 27th. Please RSVP to Lou Peterson at 759-0646 by September 22nd.

Messiah Faith stories:

About 25 years ago when Dan and I transferred from Trinity to Messiah, Carolyn Miller was giving names of children in Liberia who needed “sponsors” for their education, as she still does. We chose Sam Kolligbo and began emailing him and wiring money for his HS education. Of course, his daily living needs also needed to be met since he was a war orphan and had lived through horrendous times. He was somehow connected with the Lutheran Compound in Monrovia and I think had been delivered as a baby by Carolyn. She seemed to know him. Soon after corresponding and helping Sam financially, Naomi Ford came in to the picture. She was a clerk of sorts in the Lutheran Compound to the Bishop. She learned from Sam that we were help-ing him and she began emailing us about herself. Well, what else could we do but answer her and her family’s dire needs. Learning what their lives were like compared to ours was a “no brainer” when it came to helping out. The years passed and soon Sam had a family (first wife was killed by a black mamba snake bite) and his daughter is named Marcia (after me). He also has a son. Naomi also has been raising her two children on her own after divorcing a derelict husband. We then began funding college for both Sam and Naomi when they seemed motivated to continue their education. Actually, college costs are much lower there than here, but war and poor economics contributed to lapses in classes (profs did-n’t show up due to not being paid, etc.) and other political reasons, but both Sam and Naomi eventu-ally got their bachelor’s degree. Sam is a civil engineer and Naomi went on to law school. Naomi has graduated from law and we want to bring her to the US to celebrate and reward her. She was scheduled to come this fall, but her visit in now postponed until the Ebola crisis passes. You know, kids in the US have no concept of what Sam and Naomi have gone through to acquire their degrees, let alone survive. We’ve never met either Sam or Naomi but I’ve tried to talk with both by phone. They were very hard to understand….speaking English but with an African dialect. We’ve not kept track of the thousands we’ve wired to them, but know they would not have succeed-ed, let alone survived without our help. I have no children of my own, so these are my kids. They make me proud when they call me Mom and Dan Dad. I may meet Sam face to face some day also. Right now we are trying to bring Naomi here for a week. Originally we were planning on this September but with Ebola, it will have to wait. I’m sure you know that Carolyn is emailed and called constantly with pleas for money from people in Liberia. God bless her for doing what she can and getting help from Messiah members over the years. Dan and Marcia Wiedemeier

Praying with your child this school year

Teaching your child to pray daily is an important step on their faith

journey. One tool to use to help you is a prayer calendar. Here is a

simple one that is great for younger kids. Copies of this prayer calendar

are available on the youth bulletin board. Older kids (and adults) can

use their regular calendars, school planners, or even their smart

phones. It’s important for adults to lead by example. So sit down with

your child each week and write out (or input into your phone) who you

will be praying for this week. For more resources on praying with your

child, please contact me.

Maternity Leave

I will also being taking maternity leave at the end of September. I

will still be available by phone or email at [email protected].

Thanks,

Kelly

POSTCARD FROM KANSAS CITY—“WISH YOU WERE HERE!”

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians holds its national conference every other year, and in the “off” years holds a regional conference. This year our regional conference was held in Kansas City, Missouri, and was hosted at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a beautiful building with an exquisite Gabriel Kney tracker pipe organ. While the conference actually only lasted forty-eight hours, they were packed full of good things. As a part of the first presentation we were able to see and touch the St. John’s Bible, the first handwritten and hand illuminated Bible in 500 years. We worshipped together in a candlelit Evening Vespers on Monday, a hymn festival on Tuesday night with commentary by Peter Marty, and Eucharist on Wednesday with Dr. John Ferguson as the organist. There were a number of workshops, many about engaging art in worship. Every morning we were treated to keynote addresses by Peter Marty, nationally known Lutheran pastor who serves as Senior Pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, and a final lecture by Dr. John Fergu-son, who served as organist at St. Olaf for nearly thirty years. I brought back with me some profound theological insight about worship (and my role in it) and inspiration about ways to use art in corporate worship. I can’t thank the congregation enough for allowing me that privi-lege, one which you will reap benefits from. Next year the biannual convention will be held July 19-24 in Atlanta, Georgia. I’d love to take people with me who would be interested. Please speak with me soon as we begin financial plans to make that pilgrimage. One post-script—President Obama held a Town Hall Meeting on the last morning of the con-ference in the Convention Center across the street from the Cathedral, and he stayed over-night in the Crown Plaza where I was staying. While I never saw him it was exciting to think he was staying in the same place I was, despite all of the intense security at the hotel. Randy+

Adult Sunday School/Adult Forum

This year, the adult forum will be taking up some themes in Lutheran studies, and in justice and reconcilia-tion, and examining their biblical depths, legal boundaries, and social implications. What does it mean to ‘break the law’, when you are the victim, or the judge, or the lawbreaker? What does it mean to find peace? Where is the ELCA on matters of justice, and where is Luther? Here is the first part of the program year: September 7-21 Prof. Sandy Krell from SCC presents the Alternatives to Violence Project. You might be-come interested enough to want to train to work with this program at the Madison prison. Read the testimoni-al at the end of this article, then check the Facebook page ‘Alternatives to Violence Project Iowa’. September 28-October 12 Pastor Susanne leads a conversation about Lutheran basics: grace, law and gos-pel, the history of our denomination and our Small Catechism. New to the Lutheran community? These clas-ses will be for you. October 19 and 26 Come watch the latest movie about the life of Martin Luther, with time left for conversa-tion. November 2-16 Prof. Sandy Krell from SCC presents “Restorative Justice and Jesus”. What is unique about restorative justice, and restorative discipline? How does it involve all who have been affected by crime and the criminal? “A Case For Alternatives to Violence Project” by Dennis Henderson (Decent Dennis) I served 25 years in prison. Seventeen of those years were spent in some form of segregation, for some form of violence. I had established myself as one of Iowa State Prison’s most violent prisoners because I be-lieved violence worked. From early childhood to adulthood, I was surrounded by violence, and it always appeared that the people who exhibited the highest propensity for violence were the people who received the most admiration/respect. It wasn’t until I was two or three workshops into AVP that I realized violence is usually an act of insecurity. I was introduced to AVP by coercion. (ISP administrators gave me an ultimatum, either I attend AVP or I re-main in administrative segregation.) I stayed in the group and returned to the group not because of the threat but because of the positive affect it was having on my disposition/perception. Once I learned I was not alone in the misconception of violence, I began to analyze why I really relied on violence. AVP taught me how to be confident in who I am and not how people perceive me to be. It gave me tools to deal with my insecurities in a rational manner. Today I give praise to AVP for the changes it helped me make in my life, and I advocate its expansion from prison to juvenile homes to communities. And I believe it should be taught early and often. I am a case for the effectiveness of AVP and because of it I am Free! God bless us in our conversation, and in our studies. Pastor Susanne
