Call Committee Update: First Round Interviews in Progress
Your Call Committee is excited to share that we are moving into Initial Interviews with candidates for the call
of Associate Pastor.
In early October, the Committee met with Deacon Krista Lind from the Saint Paul Area Synod of the ELCA. She
shared the biographical information for a group of candidates for us to consider. These are individuals who
reviewed Mount Calvary’s Ministry Site Profile and other information and, in consultation with the Synod,
desired to be brought forward for consideration by the Committee. In other words, they are excited to learn
more about the role of Associate Pastor here at Mount Calvary and the Synod believes they have skills that
align with our needs and plans. As part of our commitment to the Synod, we will be interviewing all of these
candidates. We hope to have these first round interviews completed by Thanksgiving.
In preparation for these interviews, the Committee conducted a practice interview in mid-October with Rev.
Andrea Roske-Metcalfe, the current Associate Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church of Apple Valley. We are
grateful to Pastor Andrea for her coaching and guidance as the Committee prepares to welcome this initial
group of candidates. These candidates are interviewing us as much as we are interviewing them and the
Committee strives to be good ambassadors for Mount Calvary.
Once all of the first round Interviews are completed, one of two things will happen:
One or more candidate(s) move on to a second , longer, in-person Interview: This portion of the process
also typically involves the Committee listening to the candidate preach and conducting reference checks.
Request More Candidates: The Committee would do this only after interviewing all of the first group of
candidates and mutually deciding that none were a fit for Mount Calvary. In this case, we would receive a
new group of candidates from the Synod and begin a new round of interviews.
If we are able to schedule the interviews as hoped, our next major update should be by the end of
November. At that time, we should be able to know which step – moving to second round interviews or
requesting a new group of candidates – we will be taking next.
You can always see the
latest progress on
www.mtcalvary.com
(Who We Are -> Call
Committee) and on the
poster in the church
narthex. Let us know
what questions you
have. Please keep your
call committee, our
candidates, and their
congregations in your
prayers as we ponder
God’s future together.

Weather-Related Closings
With winter here, severe weather may occasionally cause a need to cancel or change worship services, programs, or activities. When this happens, we will post updated information on our website (mtcalvary.com) and on facebook (facebook.com/mountcalvaryeagan). We will also send emails and texts to our master lists of emails and cell phone numbers. If your email and/or phone number aren’t on our list, or if you’re not sure, please send them to [email protected].
Church Office Holiday Hours
The church office will be closed Tuesday, December 25- Tuesday, January 1. We will reopen on Wednesday, January 2.
All Saints Sunday On November 4, we remember our loved ones by lighting candles in worship as a way to honor the saints in our lives who have already left this world. It is a special time to hold in our thoughts and prayers the many loved ones we miss. We grieve for our beloved but also come to hear the promise that God wipes away our tears.

Lessons & Carols—December 16 at 6:00pm
The Joy, Alleluia, Youth, Sanctuary, ROTL, ReBELLious, Calvary Carillons, and brass all share their musical talents for the evening. We have readers from the youngest choristers to congregational members, a community representative and council president. You will experience the story of Christ’s birth from early prophecies, to his birth, and through John’s proclamation of “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” This is an excellent time to invite family, friends and neighbors to hear the Christmas story through song and readings. After worship everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for cheese, breads, fruit, vegetables, coffee and cider. The opening prayer reads, “Beloved in Christ, at this Christmas-tide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.”
Copper Street Brass—December 17th at 7:30pm at Mount Calvary
"There’s no better time for brass than the holidays! Now a family tradition for many, our popular holiday concert celebrates the stories and sounds of the season. You’ll hear everything from traditional carols and classical music to funk and rock holiday tunes - crafted with our signature original arrangements and performed with passion, humor, and virtuosity. You’ll also hear music from favorite childhood movies and TV specials like The Nutcracker, The Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and The Grinch. Join us at any of our five metro-area performances for a concert the whole family will love!" Tickets are $25 in advance at copperstreetbrass.org, $30 at the door, and $10 for students.
Instrumentalists Needed
Do you have an instrument in a closet feeling like the Velveteen Rabbit? Are you a young instrumentalist just beginning to create music with your fingers or breath? Please let Pam know either by signing up at the Welcome Desk, telling her in person, or sending an email. On Sunday, December 16th, we will have a multi- generation ensemble playing easy Christmas carols for prelude before 10:30 worship. Rehearsal will be in the choir room at 9:40. If you want music ahead of time, let Pam know. It is best if you are in 6th grade or older.

Summer Immersion Programs
Summer certainly seems like it’s a long way away, but we are planning now for our summer immersion programs for youth of all ages.
Vacation Bible School for students in pre-K through 6th grade in the 2018-2019 school year will be held Monday, June 17—Thursday, June 20. We are looking at working with other congregations on the possibility of holding a joint program, but this is the week we are planning on, so mark your calendars now. We are planning to once again partner with Luther Crest Bible Camp, whose staff will lead the day camp program.
Chicago Service Trip: Our confirmation age students (those in 7th or 8th grade in the 2018-2019 school year) will be heading on a service trip to Chicago from Sunday, July 28—Friday, August 2. This trip is organized by Luther Crest and will likely include people from congregations from across the state. Parents of students in that age group should stay tuned to their emails and to mtcalvary.com for further details as they become available.
Lake Traverse Service Trip: Our high schoolers (those in 9th-12th grade in the 2018-2019 school year) will also be going on a service trip. They will be heading to the Lake Traverse Dakota Reservation in Sisseton, South Dakota, from Sunday, July 14 to Friday, July 19. High schoolers and parents should have already received communication about this trip. If you have not received it, please contact Brian at [email protected] Registration and deposits are due by Friday, November 16.
Confirmation Sunday
On October 28, sixteen youth people publicly affirmed their baptism on Confirmation Sunday. We give thanks to God for these young people and the gifts that they bring to our community. We also give thanks for all those who have walked with them along their faith journey, especially their families and their confirmation guides: Brian Hammel, Tracey Hammel, Wade Hanson, and Erica White. Congratulations to the confirmands!
Sunday Morning Volunteers We have a great group of folks (adults and teens) helping with Sunday morning faith formation activities, and we would like to see that group grow. If you would like to join the team, contact Brian at [email protected]

Thank You Lawn Mowers
We have a very dedicated team of lawn movers at Mount Calvary. Every week from late April to the end of October five teams of 2-3 people mow and trim the grass for Mount Calvary, the Al-Anon house, and The Open Door. It is a large area and they deserve a large THANK YOU for their dedication. Thank you to Tim Wandersee, Eldon Johnson, Bill Schumacher, Ken Sangren, Dave Arndtsen, John Melichar, Rob Moen, Tony Lail, Brian Hammel, Dean Hammel, Dean Hammel, Eric Hammel, Dan Gilbertson, Les Moss, Mark Nickell, Brian Nickell, Wade Hanson and Tyler Hanson. A special thanks to Brian Hammel for maintaining the lawn equipment!

A Viable Option for Giving to Mount Calvary
Are you 70½ and required to take an annual required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA? If so, please consider meeting the Required Minimum Distribution test by making a tax-free transfer directly from your IRA to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. There may be several benefits to taking this approach. By making a direct transfer from your IRA, those funds will count toward meeting your RMD; however, they will not be included in your Adjustable Gross Income (AGI) when it comes time to file your personal tax return. Depending on your personal situation, that may be important as it relates to avoiding Medicare surcharges, as well as minimizing theamount of Social Security benefits that are taxable. We have had several members doing this for the last couple of years and they think it is the best option for them! A win-win is how one refers to it. If you have any questions about your personal situation, please consult with your investment advisor or your tax advisor.
Contribution Envelopes for 2019 Your 2019 contribution envelopes
should arrive in December. Envelopes
are sent out 4 times per year. They
arrive in an envelope from the

not receive your envelopes and would
like them, please contact Kay

Mitten Tree
November 25—December 16. Bring hats, mittens, and scarves to be given to the clients of The Open Door.
Annual Christmas Giving Tree: November 11-25
One of the ways Mount Calvary serves our neighbors is by purchasing gifts, household items, and gift cards to bring joy and happiness to people who might not otherwise receive any gifts. This year we will be working with the Holiday Gift Shop and The Dakota County Homeless Shelter.
Since 2010, a coalition of Dakota County churches, businesses, and other partners has provided a place for clients of The Open Door to come and “shop” for a gift for themselves and their family members. The Holiday Gift Shop held at Easter by the Lake Church is on December 4 and 5.
Dakota County is once again collaborating with area congregations to host a temporary homeless shelter for Dakota County residents from November 1 through April 1. Mount Calvary continues to be committed to helping our neighbors in the times of their greatest needs. While we are unable to host the shelter, we are certainly able to provide volunteers and supplies. To that end, the Church Council decided to support the purchase of supplies (toiletries, coffee, etc) for the shelter as part of our Christmas Giving Tree. We thank you in advance for your generous support.
Choose a tag (or two or three) from the Giving Tree and shop for the item listed. Bring gifts to church by Sunday, December 2 and place them under the Giving Tree. Please attach the tags to your unwrapped gifts so we can deliver them to the appropriate recipients. The Holiday Gift Shop at Easter
requires us to bring the gifts to their church on Monday, December 3, so please have your gifts here by December 2. Thank you.
Council to provide Christmas Gift Cards to Lincoln Place Residents
The Lincoln Place is a program which offers housing and support services for homeless and/or disabled at-risk young adults from ages 18-24 to increase self-sufficiency and decrease the risk of future homeless-ness. Council voted to provide $25 gift cards to each of the residents at Lincoln Place as part of their mission focus. Lincoln Place is located on the corner of Cedar Grove Parkway and Gold Trail, just down the hill from Mount Calvary.

Quilters Update
Quilting continues on Thursday mornings at 8:30am. Workers are always needed. No specific sewing skills required. We will not be quilting during the month of December. Contact Phyllis Martin with any questions.
This fall the quilters have assembled 24 quilts. Fifteen quilts have been donated to Metro Hope Ministries. This residential treatment program for men, single women, and women with children is designed to empower residents to break the cycle of addiction and homelessness through spiritual, educational and emotional stability.
Tuna/Canned Meat Collection for the Open Door
Mount Calvary will continue its tradition of collecting tuna/canned meat for The Open Door Food Pantry. Tuna is one of the few items that The Open Door is in constant need of and cannot get at a reduced price like so many of the other staples they have for distribution. Please bring your tuna or canned meat to the Thanksgiving Eve Service, Wednesday, November 21 at 6:30pm. Come for the worship and stay for the pie social at 7:30 in the Fellowship Hall.
The Little Engine That Could Global Health Ministries’ Suitcase Ministry is a small but powerful engine for good in the world. Last year GHM sent 145 suitcases overseas, hand-carried to 31 different countries. Volunteers packed the suitcases with everything from surgical instruments to sutures and first aid supplies. Microscopes for mission hospital labs, anatomical models for nursing schools, so many items to help the hands that heal! More than 20 of those suitcases went to Cameroon, bringing urgently needed items to Garoua Boulai Hospital and other health programs of the Lutheran Church in Cameroon. GHM needs more suitcases for its Suitcase Ministry! Donations of suitcases can be dropped off by the carts on the lower level. Suitcases can be up to 62” in circumference, not carry-on size (every traveler brings as much as possible, so larger suitcases are preferred). GHM also needs crutches and canes – virtually every partner hospital and clinic requests these for their patients. Please consider checking your closets or your attic or basement for items like these that you no longer need. They would be gratefully received at GHM!

Hannah Circle Update
The Hannah Circle’s monthly Bible Study time will be on Tuesday, November 27, rather than the regularly scheduled day of Tuesday, November 20.
Life Stories
LifeStories is an inter-generational activity that helps deepen Mount Calvary relationships. It pairs people interested in preserving their personal histories with volunteer “listeners” who help them remember the people, events and stories that have made their lives unique and given it spice. Most of us never get around to capturing and recording our memories. Listeners help make it easy by asking questions and empathizing with story-tellers in a series of fascinating conversations. The result is a personalized history for family and future generations—and a priceless personal bond between story-teller and listener that comes from sharing personal stories. Here’s why Mark Nickell volunteers as a listener: “It’s a pleasure to honor some of our long-time members, and friends, by listening to their stories! And it's a lot of fun!” Please join us—either as story-teller or listener. To volunteer or learn more, contact a LifeStories team member: Vicky Avery, Deanna Baisch, Rich Cowles, Karen Dare, Lisa Johnson, Phyllis Martin, Debbie Nickell, Mark Nickell, Mark Teats, or staff member Brian Hornbecker.
Writers’ Group
We are a diverse group, ranging from high school age to the age when you stop counting, and from people who write only occasionally to tireless writers who are published and have won awards. We have a common desire to express our thoughts and appreciate life. We share our writings for discussion and feedback, as well as our favorite books, poems, essays, articles and quotations. We'd love to have you join us. Contact Rich Cowles or staff member Brian Hornbecker ([email protected]).
Thanksgiving Eve Worship & Pie Social: Wed Nov 21 6:30pm For over 20 years we have gathered together to ask God’s blessing and to give thanks for all the gifts we share. Our God is a generous God! Please join us for festive worship at 6:30pm. After worship we will move to the Fellowship Hall for pie! As our blessings are in great abundance, so is the variety of pies! Please sign up if you would be willing to bring a pie. (Please cut your pie before bringing it to church.) We also need helpers to serve and clean up. You can sign up to help by:
1. Signing up in the gathering area on a Sunday morning at church
2. Signing up online: www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C4EA5A72CA6FA7-thanksgiving2
Everyone is welcome! Bring friends and family.
Don’t forget your can of tuna/canned meat for the Open Door! (see page 7)
November/December Messenger Page 9
Starting in November ushers, greeters, readers, and coffee clean up will be asked to sign-up as you are able instead of being scheduled. If you are in one of these groups, you will receive an email from Mount Calvary via Flocknote with a link to Sign-up Genius. For worship assistants who do not have an email address, there will be a sign-up at the Welcome Desk. Email reminders will be sent out via Sign Up Genius or a postcard will be sent for those without email addresses.
If you are not on a list but would like to be added, you can add your name with contact information at the
Welcome Desk. Every one of these areas helps Mount Calvary be a welcoming place to everyone. Greeters &
ushers are the first face of the congregation for many. Serving coffee is part of our hospitality which means it
needs to be cleaned up! Readers also show that this is a church for all of us. We all participate in offering our
worship and praise to God. Thank you to everyone for being patient as we work through a new system.
There was a lot of information discussed and shared. Please check out the bulletin boards in the lower level narthex for more details of these minutes.
Call Committee update (Lauren): The call committee had their first trial run at interviewing Pastor Andrea Roske-Metcalf of Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. As a result of that practice interview, questions came up that the council needs to address. Formal interviews will begin the first part of November.
Bibles for all ages (NaDyne): Instead of the 3rd grade milestone - give away Bibles to all ages on Confirmation Sunday, October 28. Council members will take charge of setting up the tables between the services and after the second service.
Giving Tree (NaDyne): Giving Tree items to be given to Easter Lutheran Open Door Holiday Event and Dakota County Homeless Shelter. Penny Johnson will assist with the coordination/recruitment for The Open Door Holiday Event and Lisa Johnson will assist with the coordination/recruitment for the Dakota County Homeless Shelter. Council will use their Discretionary Fund to purchase gift cards for the Lincoln Place residents (Brenda). The Mitten Tree will follow the Giving Tree with hats, scarves and mittens going to the Open Door residents. We may do another collection for the Homeless Shelter in February/March.
Thanksgiving Eve worship and pie social (Brenda): Jackson will be in charge of collecting the tuna/canned meat and getting it to The Open Door Pantry. Brenda and Lauren will coordinate helpers (council/call committee/transition task force members) for the pie social through SignUp Genius.
Council’s discretionary dollars (NaDyne and Tamara): There were no dollars budgeted for the call committee as we were unaware of dollars needed at that time, so the council has agreed to pay interviewing expenses out of their discretionary fund to assist the call committee. In addition, the council will purchase gift cards for the Lincoln Place clients for Christmas. It was noted that there may be moving expenses for the new associate pastor that may come out of this fund.
Finance Update (Tamara): We are behind budget in giving and behind budget in expenses. Hoping to see more dollars in October/ November/December. Stewardship mailing will go out the week of October 22 and the focus will be on the non-givers.
Other Business: Jackson would like to do his Eagle Scout Project through Mount Calvary. Many of the projects are outdoors and that time has passed, so he is looking at other opportunities that can be completed by mid-January. NaDyne will check with the Dakota Alanon and with the Open Door to see if there are any projects they have.
