Lynn’s Lines A Growing Edge The Search Committee for your next pastoral leader has been hard at work for the
past few months. The first project such a group faces is the daunting task of prepar-
ing the congregational profile. They have done a fine job! I know they have spent
much time and energy on this, but it is such an important part of the search process.
It identifies for prospective candidates, “This is who we are as a faith community.” It
includes information about the church including membership, finances, the wider
community, and other information that helps a prospective pastor get to know all
about St. Paul’s UCC.
But even more importantly, at least in my thinking, is the identification of the chal-
lenges and concerns you are facing as a congregation. On the profile you are asked
to “Identify major trends you envision in your church in the next 5 years.” The com-
mittee has done a great job not only giving an accurate picture of the church at this
time, but also identifying the areas of concern and challenge. One of the trends they
identified is Reversing the trend of decline in numbers of members and attendance at
worship. The second trend is Becoming more welcoming to visitors and non-members
and including them in church activities. The two fit together like hand and glove.
In order to reverse the decline in numbers, it means we have to bring in some new
folks. To do so, we must become more welcoming to visitors and non-members.
Hospitality is not only essential, it is biblical and a characteristic of a disciple of
Jesus Christ. Hospitality in the ancient Near East was tightly bound up in customs
and practices which all were expected to observe. It was indispensable. There were
few hotels or restaurants along one’s journey on the dusty roads of Palestine. Little
travel was possible without the assumption and expectation of hospitality. Without
it, the Jesus movement would likely have stayed a small, local group and died out
fairly quickly.
Two thousand years later, hospitality is hardly less essential. Dr. Karoline Lewis,
Professor of Preaching at Luther Seminary in Minnesota, shared some interesting
thoughts. She writes, “There really is no such thing as ‘radical’ hospitality or
‘genuine’ hospitality. At its heart, hospitality is, simply, radical. There is no other
kind. You either are or you aren’t hospitable. If you welcome some and exclude oth-
ers, don’t pretend you are hospitable…And as much as we claim its necessity, its im-
portance, that it’s a mark of the church, we seem hell bent on doing the best we can
(Continued on page 2)
2
to communicate our inhospitable nature…We feign that welcome coordinators and
nametags stations and visitors cards in the pews suffice as genuine reception to an-
other.”
While we have a Hospitality Committee here at St. Paul’s, it is hardly the work of a
small group of our people. Nor is it solely the “job” of the new pastor(s). We must
all be members of the Hospitality Committee. Hospitality continues to be a
“growing edge” for us as a congregation. St. Paul’s UCC is not “our” church, it is the
church of Jesus Christ. When we extend a hand of welcome or friendship, we do so
always on his behalf. What do guests and visitors learn about Jesus if they are ig-
nored, met with indifference, or even hostility, when they enter our sanctuary or our
facility? If we want to reverse declining numbers and become more welcoming, it
will take each and every one of us devoting our efforts to make it happen. Often
people begin visiting churches in the fall when a new program year begins. With
our 125th Anniversary Celebration, I am hopeful we will have some new folks join us
for worship. Can we welcome them warmly and genuinely and even share a pew
with them, perhaps even give them our own seat? Instead of seeing them as
“outsiders,” can we see them as our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Blessings for the journey,
(Continued from page 1)
Staff Changes
Lisa Huck officially became a member of the Church Staff as of July 1st. She will
be working 8-10 hours per week as the Assistant Treasurer. This position had been
part of Mary Peterson’s responsibilities. Lisa will primarily be in the office on Mon-
day mornings and Friday afternoons with other times as needed. Mary will be out of
the office during those times.
There will also be a change in our Director of Discovery Worship position. Our cur-
rent director, Daphne Owen, will be stepping down as of August 30th. We are
pleased to announce that Kasey Gathercole and Katie Maurer will become Co-
Directors of Discovery Worship, effective September 1, 2015. Kasey will serve as
director for the Praise Singers, as well as worship leader. Katie will be selecting and
directing the worship music and continuing her position as pianist for practices and
worship.

CHAIRS FOR HAITI
Having recently returned from Haiti, I noticed there are so
many needy projects. One that touched my heart was the con-
dition of the primary-school chairs at Ravine Trompette, Haiti.
The chairs are dangerous, broken, tattered and dilapidated,
but still in use, as there are no others to replace them. In just
a few weeks, school will resume in Ravine Trompette, Haiti
and a decent chair to sit in helps concentration, contentment
and in this case, safety. If children have safe furniture that is
shaped to support their small bodies, they can much better stay focused on the
work in front of them. The prevalent list of items needed to be addressed in Haiti is
long. But, you can help these small children by purchasing a chair for twenty dol-
lars. It will be as Christ said, “Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you
did unto me.” Simply note in the memo space of your check, already made out to
St. Paul’s UCC, “Haiti Chairs”. You’ll receive credit towards your tithing amount,
plus you will extend the hands of compassion across the globe to Haiti in a kind and
merciful act of love. Will you help when the campaign kicks off in September?
Sincerely, Joyce Hendrix
An Evansville Tri-State Association – Bethlehem UCC Mission Trip is being
planned for September 12th through the 19th. Anyone age 18 and older is most wel-
come to join the group for a week of making a difference in the lives of those served
by this UCC Mission which serves the poor and disadvantaged people of the Gulf
Coast Region of Mississippi. As our St. Paul’s youth who last year went to BBM can
attest, it will be a week well spent. If working on houses doing either skilled or
unskilled jobs is not to your liking, there are opportunities to serve at Loaves and
Fishes (soup kitchen), Micah House (a day shelter for the homeless), the Food Pan-
try, or a local clothing bank. The trip is limited to 44 participants – 22 men and 22
women. The contact person is Bill Gilbert who may be reached at 812-204-1616 or
[email protected]. The cost per person is around $120, but scholarship help is
available.

Parish Nursing Swimming Safety
Swimming is a great way for the whole family to get active. Follow these tips to
stay safe in and around the water.
Swim safely.
Take swim lessons if you don’t know how to swim.
Sign your kids up for swim lessons as soon as they are ready. This can be as ear-
ly as age 1.
Swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone.
Don’t drink alcohol if you are swimming or watching children.
Use floating toys like water wings and noodles for fun – not for safety. Don’t use
them in place of life jackets.
Watch out for rip currents. A rip current is when the water pulls you away from
shore. If you get caught in a rip current, swim along the shoreline until you are
out of the current, then swim to shore.
Watch children carefully.
Make sure at least one adult is always watching when children are in or around
the water.
Don’t read or use the phone while you are watching young children.
Watch all children in the water, even if they know how to swim.
Make sure pools are safe.
If you have a pool, install a 4-sided pool fence that’s at least 4 feet high and sepa-
rates the pool from the house and yard.
Use self-closing and self-latching gates that open outward and are out of reach of
children, so kids can’t get to the pool when you aren’t watching them.
Check water and weather conditions before going swimming.
Learn the meaning of colored safety flags used at the beach, and obey all warn-
ings.
Get out of the water right away if you hear thunder or see lightning. Strong
winds can also be dangerous.
Don’t swim in the ocean, lakes, or rivers after heavy rain. Water is more likely
to be polluted after a rain storm.
Check for signs or warnings about bacteria or other pollution in the water before
swimming.
Protect yourself and others from germs in the water.
Try not to get water in your mouth.
Make sure everyone is clean before swimming. Shower with soap. Wash your
hands after using the bathroom or changing diapers.
Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Change diapers in a
bathroom or a diaper-changing area.

Don’t Miss It! We hope you have already circled your calendar for our 125th Anni-
versary Celebration on Sunday, October 25th, 2015. Beginning at 9:30 that morn-
ing, there will be an Organ Concert with Mark X. Hatfield playing our new Allen
Bravura L-332 organ. The Service of Worship will follow beginning at 10:00 a.m.
We are excited to welcome Dr. David Greenhaw, President of Eden Theological Sem-
inary, who will be preaching. Mark Hatfield will be our guest organist with special
music provided by our Traditional Choir and our Praise Singers. It promises to be
an inspiring service as we praise God together in celebration of this important event
in the life of St. Paul’s UCC!
Following worship, we will enjoy a delicious lunch catered by Schnitzelbank in our
gym. We need everyone to make reservations for the luncheon either at the Hospi-
tality Center or by calling the Church Office (425-1522) by October 17th. There will
be no charge for lunch. Free will donations will be accepted to help defray the cost.
We hope everyone will plan to be here for what promises to be a very special day for
our church family. Come and help us celebrate as we give thanks to God for the
many blessings of these 125 years of ministry and mission in Christ name!
BIG BIRD SUNDAY!!! BIG BIRD Sunday is coming up on Sunday, September
13th, and we hope you will choose to participate. As part of our 125th Anniversary
Celebration, we are going to have an all-church picture taken in front of our church.
BIG BIRD is the name for the remote-controlled helicopter that Jeff and Stetson
Ludwig will use to take our picture. Weather permitting – no rain and no strong
winds – we will gather at 10:15 at the front steps on 12th and Michigan Streets.
The alternate date will be Sunday, September 20th, same time and place. Copies of
this picture will be available for you to purchase. This is a great opportunity and we
much appreciate Jeff and Stetson for making this possible for our church family.
PICTURES FOR 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! Calling all families,
Sunday School and VBS classes, youth groups, Bible Study groups, “Give Big” work
groups, choirs and music groups, and anyone else who’s interested!! We’d like to
decorate the walls of the gym with pictures of the families and groups who’ve made
up the numerous ministries and legacy of St. Paul’s. Please help us cover the gym
walls with a pictorial walk-thru-history for all to reminisce and enjoy of those
who’ve gone before us, and those still with us, that have been an integral part of
what has made St. Paul’s UCC great for 125 years! If you are interested, please
make up your collage of pictures on an average white 20x28 (approx.) poster board
and title it as to who the family or group is. Please feel free to make up more than
one. Bring your completed poster boards to the church office by Friday, October 23rd
at 4 p.m. You may pick your poster boards up at your convenience beginning Mon-
day, October 26th, in the church office. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact Daphne Owen at [email protected], or (812)455-6621.

Calling All Musicians
Discovery Worship is looking for eager new volunteers to be a part of the music
program. We are very happy to welcome back returning members, but we are look-
ing forward to seeing some new faces too! Even if you are hesitant to sing or
play, give it a try! No one will be put in the spotlight if they do not wish to be put
there. If you are unsure about singing, just give it a try! Everyone is welcome!
This year, there will be several changes with the Praise Singers. First, CPR choir
will no longer be meeting. However, the decision to discontinue a youth choir will
not take away singing opportunities for our youth. The Praise Singers is lowering
its age to welcome members 6th grade and up. Secondly, the normal Praise Singers
practice will be on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:00 a.m. However, 9:00-9:30 a.m.
will also be offered for practice. During this earlier time, choir members and special
musicians can come and work on choir parts and special music in more of a one on
one setting. Lastly, all choral music for the year will be provided at the first choral
practice on September 13th.
We are looking for more instrumentalists for the praise band and special music as
well! If you play an instrument, please contact Katie or Kasey. We are not looking
for professionals. We are just looking for people excited to praise Jesus and to par-
ticipate. If anyone is interested in special music, but does not know what song to
sing or how to go about singing or playing, we will help you find a special piece that
suits your talents.
All musicians interested in choir, special music, song leading, and the praise band,
please contact Kasey Gathercole at (812)454-5653, or Katie Maurer at (812)483-
9186. A sign up sheet will also be available at the Hospitality Center.
Calling All Singers and Ringers!!
Traditional Choirs and Handbell Choirs will be kicking off our 2015-2016 season on
Wednesday, August 19, and we’d love for you to join us! Handbell Choir will meet
5:45 to 6:30 p.m., then we’ll have desserts and social time downstairs in the dining
room for all choir and bell choir members from 6:30 to 7, followed by Traditional
Choir rehearsal from 7 to 7:45.
We welcome new members - these groups are a wonderful way to become more in-
volved at St. Pauls’ and connect to others through our Music Ministry. Questions?
Contact Amanda Batts at 812-430-6942 or [email protected]. Hope to see you
then!

Something New at St. Paul’s UCC
This fall, we are excited to be the location for a HEAD START Classroom for pre-
school children who live near our church. The Community Action Program of Ev-
ansville (CAPE) which oversees all sites in the three counties served – Vanderburgh,
Posey, Gibson - serves over 600 children and their families. There will be 17 chil-
dren in the class, meeting here Monday through Thursday each week, with their
staff also meeting on Friday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. HEAD START provides learning
opportunities to assist in mental, social, emotional, and physical growth for 3, 4, & 5
year olds. These may be some of the same children that will be part of our Open
Gym Ministry once they reach school age. We are delighted to be able to expand our
ministry with the neighborhood in this significant way.
5th Quarter Begins
Once again St Paul’s will be hosting three 5th Quarter Events.
They will occur on August 21st , September 25th, and October 16th.
What does this mean? Our gym will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
for neighborhood Open Gym youth and open to Reitz students
from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m. after the home football games. Activities
for the youth and food will be provided.
Community businesses are helping to sponsor this outreach pro-
gram. Our part will be to help set up and clean up for the events, serve food and
drinks, and just be there to help supervise the youth. If you can’t do any of these,
you may want to consider donating money, or drinks. Let’s be hospitable.
Sign up lists will be in the Sunday school rooms and at the Hospitality Center for
volunteer positions and the time required. Thank you ahead of time for helping to
reach out to the youth of the community in this way.
See Niki Lynn or Pastor Linda if you have questions.
Christmas Bazaar
The Triangle Class will hold the 2nd Annual Christmas Bazaar De-
cember 5, 2015 here in St. Paul’s Gym. We are looking for shoppers
and vendors. We will accept new handcrafted items as well as prod-
uct lines such as Mary Kay, Thirty-one, etc. Booth rental fees will
benefit the St. Paul’s Youth Mission Trip and other Missions of the
Triangle Class. If you or someone you know are interested, please
contact Carla Wittenbraker 812-853-7251 for more information. Thank you for sup-
porting our Mission work. Watch upcoming Messengers for more information.

Search Committee News
Dear St. Paul’s Members and Friends,
The Search Committee has been developing our church profile during our frequent
meetings over the past three months. The 29-page document provides a detailed
picture of St. Paul’s and the Evansville area and will be viewed by candidates for
our open pastoral position. It has statistical and financial information about our
congregation from our annual reports, as well as important events and activities
over the past few years and traits we are seeking in a new pastor. Much of this
came from our March, 2015, focus group discussions.
The profile has been reviewed by Dr. Stephanie Weiner, Associate Conference Pas-
tor of the UCC Indiana-Kentucky Conference (IKC). It was also been reviewed and
approved by the St. Paul’s Church Council in a special meeting July 26. We expect
that it will be made available, though the Indiana Kentucky Conference, to qualified
pastors sometime in August.
As these pastors provide their personal profiles to us through the Conference, the
Search Committee will receive copies and begin the review leading to the best candi-
dates for a new senior pastor to lead us into the future. Please keep the Search
Committee in your prayers as we begin this next step in the process.
Yours in Christ, The St. Paul’s Search Committee

Open Gym 2015-16 is about to begin!
Kids will be coming to St. Paul’s to play in the gym; learn new skills like knitting, dancing, and singing; play games like BINGO and checkers; create fun crafts; cook hot snacks; and find new, safe, interesting things to do. These kids find our church as their home. Help us welcome more children into our church home by sharing any talents or interests you might have.
Please find volunteer cards in the pew racks, fill one out, and place it in the offering plate. Volunteers can choose an orientation training on either August 12 or 13, 3-5 p.m. Thank you for your consideration and welcoming generosity.

Children’s News!!
Howell Swimming: On June 28th we took 14 children and youth on a picnic at How-
ell Park. After our picnic, we headed to the pool for some “Sun N Fun.” It was a
beautiful day and the kids had lots of fun splashing and sliding around!!! And our
bonus treat was getting to watch the Air Show as the jets flew right around the
pool.
Children’s Sermons: Can you believe that we are already half way through 2015!! I
would like to thank everyone who so graciously helped out so far with our children’s
sermons. The messages that have been brought to our children each Sunday have
been amazing. But now is the time to get volunteers lined up for the rest of the
year. You will find a new sign-up sheet at the Hospitality Center, so please drop by
and sign up for one or more Sundays. We provide treats for the children each
week or you are welcome to bring your own choice. This is a special time in the ser-
vice for our children and we need your help. If you have any questions or need re-
sources, please don’t hesitate to call Pam Schuck, 812-483-2468.
SAVE THE DATE!! September 13, 2015 we will be having our “Rally Day All Church
Picnic” directly following the 11:00 service. So mark your calendars as you won’t
want to miss out on all of the fun!!!! More details to follow.
Attention Parents/Grandparents: VBS Sharing & Blessing Backpacks!
On Sunday, August 9th our VBS children will be sharing in worship as we celebrate their learning of the Feeding of the 5,000. We want all children to bring their school back packs with them to church that day so that we can bless them in worship.
You can help by: Registering your 5 year old through 6th grader in VBS. Bringing your child(ren) to worship August 9th Making sure they bring their back pack with them August 9th Preparing for worship by reading John 6:1-21 Bringing canned or dry goods to fill our baskets to overflowing for the Food Pantry
VBS is a wonderful way congregations have been invitational. Are there kids in your family or on your block that you can invite to our VBS on August 8th? If so, I encourage you to invite them, see that they get registered, and bring them if necessary. A personal invitation goes a long way. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.” I believe God puts people in front of us for a reason. Are their children God has placed in front of you? Pastor Linda
VBS Registration form is available at church, on the website.
