FEBRUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER Message from the President I hope everyone stayed warm through the recent frigid temperatures! I stayed indoors making quilts and hope you had time to do so, too. For those who were not at the last meeting, we had a lot of great information. Such as, how to make 8 triangles at once, how to work on our mitered corners, how to flatten our seams, how to make an easier knot, and much more. Some questions have come up about the “plan “ for our guild. I apologize, but I had nothing but good intentions of going forward in the direction begun. To that end, these are your committees: Membership – Judy and Teri endeavoring to enlighten and make a more inviting atmosphere for new members as well as developing a name tag unique to our guild (open for ideas). Programs – Lucy educating us with a broad selection of quilt styles and instructors. Fisher Farm – Emilia helping us prepare donations for Fisher Farms. Events – Lynn and Cindy planning the July and December parties, Saturday workshops, and retreats. UFOs – Rosie trying to keep us focused. FEBRUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER

Message from the President  I hope everyone stayed warm through the recent frigid temperatures!

To that end, these are your committees:

Membership – Judy and Teri endeavoring to enlighten and make a more inviting atmosphere for new members as well as developing a name tag unique to our guild (open for ideas). Veterans – Jodi giving our veterans the appreciation they deserve. Charity – Sandy and Mary Jo helping us help others.

Scraps - Jamie collecting our leftover fabric. Bees – Irene offering learning and sharing in a social environment. Photos – Lynn sharing each other’s creativity. Hospitality – Emilia managing delectable treats to enhance our meetings. Ways and Means – Debbie and Donna raising funds for our guild. Magazines & Books – helping with our personal education. (Chair position is open.) Facebook – Jamie facilitating the communication with each other. Website – Stephanie keeping us informed.

I hope this will answer any questions and bring all into what I hope will be a great year! ⛄ ⛄

― Mary Jo

Program for February 20, 2019   As you all know, this month, February, is our time to “get scraps and yardage” together and bagged for the sale in the barn at Fischer Farm during their quilt show. Please bring your usable, but no longer needed, scraps and yardage so it can be measured and bagged. The bags will be plastic, so people can see what they buy. I will bring boxes and then take them home. I will also bring labels with our name on them. Some labels will be marked “scraps,” other “yardage,” “charm packs,” “fat quarters,” or “2 ½ in. strips.” I will bring sharpie pens, but if you have any, that will help. The scrap bags will be 50 cents, but we can talk about the other bags. Please think about how much to charge per yard. I will figure it out from there. Thanks so much for all your cooperation and help.

― Emilia

Secretary Meeting Minutes - January 16, 2019  The meeting came to order at 6:30 p.m. President Mary Jo Johnson welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2019.    Mary Jo then turned over the meeting to Lucy Goetz, Program Chair, who introduced today’s program of member “Tips, Tricks, and Tools.”

Irene Jones - The “Magic 8” HSTs - see instructions in a separate file. Also, to make perfect 4-patches, sew two 2-½” strips together, cut 2-½” sections, flip one and sew two together.  Judy Donahue - For perfect mitered corners on a border, use the 45° line on your ruler, draw a line on each border piece, being careful not to stretch the fabric while marking it, and then sew the two fabrics together on the line. Trim and press.  Emilia Listopad - Use empty salad containers for storage of fabric, etc.  Debbie Wesenberg - When drawing on fabric, use a sandpaper board to keep from stretching the fabric. Use 120 grit sandpaper glued to a wooden board, and the fabric won’t move.  Katherine - When putting on binding, press it so it’s crisp and easy to turn.  Lynn Vock - When pressing piecework, use “the whacker” to flatten the seams. Press with steam, whack it 2-3 times, then press again. Always press on the front. “The whacker” is from Harvest House Quilting.  Stephanie Lauk, a new member, introduced herself.  Laura Moorhead - You can print your own labels on your printer, instead of hand writing them. Wash your fabric first. Place freezer paper shiny side up, then lay your fabric on top, and iron the two together. Use an inkjet printer, not a laser printer, to print your labels on the fabric.  Emilia - Put your label in the corner of your quilt, so you only have to stitch down one side.  Lynn - When quilting your quilt, stitch your name into the quilt, so you don’t have to use a label.

Page 5: Message from the President - WordPress.com · Emilia Listopad - Use empty salad containers for storage of fabric, etc. Debbie Wesenberg - When drawing on fabric, use a sandpaper board

Marilyn Moorhead - When hand sewing, first cut the thread twice the needed length, put both ends through the needle, then sew through the fabric and the loop of thread, so you don’t have to have a knot.  Mary Riordan - Need to make templates? Buy cutting boards from the Dollar Tree.  Lynn - When rotary cutting, make sure your hands are out of the way. Close your rotary cutter between cuts. Never cut towards yourself.  Mary Jo Johnson - To make a long cut, like for a border, rip it along the selvage. Also, sandpaper can be put on a clipboard.  Lucy Goetz - Use chain piecing.

The February program will be to prepare fabric scraps for the Fischer Farm Barn Sale.  The meeting adjourned for refreshments at 7:05. Thank you to Emilia, Rose, and Irene for the delicious snacks!  The meeting resumed at 7:24, with a presentation by the Committee Chairs.

Teri Walker is joining Judy in chairing Membership.  We need a Librarian, to manage the books and magazines, for selling and lending to the membership. Carol Tipre will no longer perform this role.  Debbie and Donna Barnish will chair Ways and Means. They plan a garage sale in late May/early June and need volunteers.  Lucy will continue to chair Programs. The February meeting is preparation for Fischer Farm, and the March meeting is die cutter night.  Emilia will chair Fischer Farm. Please bring your fabric next month, organized by color. Emilia will have bags and labels. The Fischer Farm Barn Sale is in Bensenville, on March 30 & 31.  Rose Zelenka will continue to chair UFOs. Give your UFO cards and money to her.  Sandy will lead Charities with Mary Jo. An announcement will be made for the next Saturday Charity Event.  Irene will chair the new Bees committee. As “beekeeper,” she’ll manage the formation of quilting bees in the guild.

Page 6: Message from the President - WordPress.com · Emilia Listopad - Use empty salad containers for storage of fabric, etc. Debbie Wesenberg - When drawing on fabric, use a sandpaper board

Lynn, who is our photographer, will chair with Cindy Beard the new Events committee. They will oversee the July picnic, December holiday party, retreats, and Saturday workshops. They are thinking of a retreat at Carmelite, in Darien. Also, maybe a group outing to the quilt show in Rockford in May.  Stephanie will create and maintain a website with information about our guild.  Jamie Huebner will manage a Facebook page for our guild.  Emilia will take over Hospitality. She has plenty of plasticware and paper goods if you don’t want to bring those. Still bring something to drink for everyone, even if it’s just water bottles.

Stephanie chose the winning raffle number and won the raffle herself. Hmmmm….  After Show and Tell, the meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm. Lynn made the motion to adjourn, and Teri seconded the motion.
