Headteacher for the Day On Thursday 2 March, Amelia Bowers will be taking up her post as Head of Prepaſter her mum kindly bid at the Michaelmas Ball. Amelia and Class Council have had some super ideas including: An extended school day!; pupils as teachers, addional Art/DT; a relaxed non uniform day (including football kit or pyjamas); children to stay in at break if they choose to; a special tuck shop for the day and even McDonalds for lunch. I am sure we can incorporate many of these ideas. Amelia will also be asked to appoint a Deputy Head and will be set an in-tray acvity of similar daily challenges/decisions a Headteacher may face. Coffee concert We look forward to seeing some of you at the Coffee concert on Thursday morning at 09:15. The orchestra and String Fantasc will be performing some new pieces, along with soloists and songs from pupils in both KS1 and KS2. As usual, this will take place in the Radcliffe Hall. Please use the main school entrance doors. Pick Up Can I remind parents who pick up children aſter school from the goldfish bowlby the cafeteria that they are politely asked to park in the school car park and walk up to collect their children following events such as sports fixtures, KCom etc. There have been many occasions recently when the pickup bay by the goldfish bowl has had 4 or 5 cars parked in it (it is double yellowed and also contains a zebra crossing) and has had cars backed up around the front of the school waing to pull up there to pick up children. This has blocked the drive way and prevented cars from leaving the school legimately. The congeson has caused a number of near misses where children have walked into the drive way to their parentscars. We consider it much safer If parents park in the car park and walk up to the school to collect and accompany children back to their cars. Thank you in ancipaon. 2017 Lent Term No. 03 Newsletter 03.02.17

Key Values:

Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm Dear Parents and Children

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. This week the Headteacher’s report includes information on: Headteacher for the Day, Coffee

Concert, Pick-Up, Display Boards, Languages Day, Origami Club, DT, Philosophy Corner, QR Codes and Headteacher’s Commenda-

tions.

Headteacher for the Day

On Thursday 2 March, Amelia Bowers will be taking up her post as ‘Head of Prep’ after her mum kindly bid at the Michaelmas Ball. Amelia and Class Council have had some super ideas including:

An extended school day!; pupils as teachers, additional Art/DT; a relaxed non uniform day (including football kit or pyjamas); children to stay in at break if they choose to; a special tuck shop for the day and even McDonalds for lunch.

I am sure we can incorporate many of these ideas. Amelia will also be asked to appoint a Deputy Head and will be set an in -tray activity of similar daily challenges/decisions a Headteacher may face.

Coffee concert We look forward to seeing some of you at the Coffee concert on Thursday morning at 09:15. The orchestra and String Fantastic will be performing some new pieces, along with soloists and songs from pupils in both KS1 and KS2. As usual, this will take place in the Radcliffe Hall. Please use the main school entrance doors.

Pick Up

Can I remind parents who pick up children after school from the “goldfish bowl” by the cafeteria that they are politely asked to park in the school car park and walk up to collect their children following events such as sports fixtures, KCom etc. There have been many occasions recently when the pickup bay by the goldfish bowl has had 4 or 5 cars parked in it (it is double yellowed and also contains a zebra crossing) and has had cars backed up around the front of the school waiting to pull up there to pick up children. This has blocked the drive way and prevented cars from leaving the school legitimately. The congestion has caused a number of near misses where children have walked into the drive way to their parents’ cars. We consider it much safer If parents park in the car park and walk up to the school to collect and accompany children back to their cars. Thank you in anticipation.

Display Boards

The new Prep display boards are looking fantastic. Open Day will be a chance for us to share our new developments.

Message from the Headteacher

Languages Day

In conjunction with Languages Day, the catering team put on a Taste of Africa Day, featuring African street food "Bunny Chow", an edible bread basket filled with a choice of Shoko Beef or Kuku Paka Chicken, Sevred with Jallof Rice and a selection of fresh vibrant salads. For dessert an African favourite Malva Sponge, a taste apricot sponge topped with toffee sauce. The children really enjoyed the menu.

Origami Club

Elijah and Max have clearly loved Miss Ballard’s Origami Club and each

week bring me some of their superb creations and make me smile. Thank

you lovely boys!

DT

Year 6s have made electric buggies in DT this year and here we have three finished examples, themed on Liquorice Allsorts! Not that we can show it here, but they do work!

Philosophy Corner

From half term, Philosophy Corner will appear in homework books for Years 3-6. Please sign against the questions to indicate they have been discussed. These questions and this discussion will be followed up in phase assemblies.

QR code explanations on homework - TRIAL COMING SOON IN Y2/Y5

Mr Whitfield and Mrs Jones are leading a trial in 2W/2D and 5J/5H. From half term, at the top of your child’s

maths homework you will find a QR code to scan. This video will include visual representations of the task,

appropriate equipment and explanations of methods shown in school, to support and further their learning at

home. Any feedback will be greatly received. To scan QR codes you will need to download a free app such as

‘QR rafter’ onto your device.

We look forward to welcoming you into school next week for the for the prospective parents Reception evening on Monday at

18:00, for KS1’s Cross Country at 1:30 on Tuesday, Coffee concert at 09:15 on Thursday and the Maths Mastery Workshop at

6.00pm on Thursday.

Warmest wishes

Mrs Kell

What is the past? Why are people interested in the past?

Is it important for us to remember past events? What events are worth remembering? Who decides?

How strict will you be as a parent?

Should children be allowed to vote in elections?

Headteacher’s Commendations

Edward is working hard in all his lessons, he never gives up when he is ‘stuck in the pit’.

Edwards’s writing in particular has improved dramatically – amazing!

Rosie’s face was such a picture as she showed me her work knowing that she had done well today in her Read Write Inc. lesson. Rosie had built on her pre-vious work from yesterday to think of a sentence using a two syllable word. Using her Fred fingers she had sounded out the word sandwich linking her sounds to their letters. She had even used a full stop and finger spaces. The keyword ‘have’ was pro-vided as it was a tricky word. The rest of the words Rosie had sounded out herself. Well done!

Foundation Stage News

On Wednesday, our Reception classes visited the Deep as part of their work on life under the seas and oceans. Whilst there, we

took part in two workshops, the first involving listening to and acting out an underwater story using puppets and hand signing

and the second exploring the body parts of different marine animals and comparing these with humans. In addition, we had a

wonderful time investigating the exhibits on display at The Deep and studying the different marine life forms to be found there.

We were fascinated by the anemones and sea slugs, enthralled by the jellyfish, thrilled by the sharks and sawfish and entranced

by the penguins. By the time we sat down to watch the divers feeding the fish in the main tank, most of us were ready for a rest!

Mrs Maltby, Mr Dyson, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Escreet and Mrs Lind were very pleased with us, and were delighted by our lovely table

manners as we sat and ate our lunches.

Date for your diary:

Wednesday 15 March: Reception and Adventurer Parents’ Activity Afternoon.

Reception Information Evening

Monday 6 February - 6.00-7.30pm

Just a reminder that our information evening for parents of pupils who are eligible to enter our Reception class in September 2017 will be held on Monday 6 February at 6.00pm. This will be an important opportunity for you to find out about what we offer in Reception and throughout the school. During the evening, you will find out about the Reception curriculum and the educational experiences on offer to your child as they move through the Prep School. You will also be able to meet teachers and other parents over a glass of wine and ask any questions you may have about the Reception class and the school as a whole. Mrs Kell, Mrs Dent and Mrs Meltham, our Key Stage 1 and 2 coordinators will be present to tell you about what lies ahead in the years beyond Reception, and Mrs Maltby, Foundation Stage Coordinator, and Mr Dyson, Reception Class teacher, will be available to answer any questions. We do hope that you will be able to attend on 6 February, and would be grateful if you contact the Prep Admin team on 01482 652172 if you have yet to confirm your attendance. Whilst we appreciate that some of our prospective parents already have older siblings in the school, we would still encourage these parents to attend Monday’s meeting, in order to ensure that they are aware of recent developments to our educational experiences. With best wishes, Mrs J Maltby

ISA North Cross Country

On Thursday, 24 Year 5 and Year 6 (plus a Year 4) pupils travelled to Beech House School in Rochdale for the ISA North Region Cross Country Championship. There were over 40 schools from across the region with over 100 runners in each age group. The children ran their hearts out and the standard of the competition was fantastic. Performances of the day went to Hannah Black in Year 4 who was run-ning for the Year 5s and who finished just outside the medals in 4th place but es-pecially to Toby Greensmith who won the Year 6 boys event. Overall in the team standings, Y5 boy finished 7th; Year 5 girls finished 5th; Year 6 girls finished 2nd and Year 6 Boys finished 1st overall. The Year 6 success meant that they were the 1st place combined team and the Year 6 trophy and shield now stand proudly in the trophy cabinet in the Prep school. Top 10 finishers in the Year 6 races qualify for the National Cross Country Champi-onships on the 4th March, at Princethorpe College in Warwickshire. There they will represent the North of England. These children (with their finishing positions) are Toby Greensmith – 1st; Felix Parker – 9th; Myles Hall – 10th; and Bethan Cairns – 10th. Benedict Hill finished in 11th place so is currently a reserve. We’re very proud of all the children’s achievements but feel extra proud of those who have been selected to run in this prestigious event and of course we will report on their day at the Nationals in March. Well done to the whole squad whose behaviour and company were exemplary. As well as those already named the squad is Coen Adegbembo, Adam Pashby, Ruby Cross, Ruby Dawson, George Rice, George Buckle, Megan Wright, Billy Normington, Ava Dabbs, Amelia Blowers, Hamish Hannam, Oli Ball, Ben Pounder, Sienna Snodgrass, Max Eastburn, Evie McCoid, Bronte Smith and Harriet Hollis.

Be the Boss Budding Entrepreneurs in years 5 & 6 were offered a lunchtime club called ‘Be the Boss.’ The aim was to come up with their own product and company name. They also made an advert and a PowerPoint presentation. The company names were: Segway Go – they provided Segway parties Pet Pal Hotel- As the name suggests a hotel/spa for pets Kool Kicks- Designing a trainer The children worked extremely well in their groups and were very talented coming up with their ideas. All the children in Years 5 & 6 scored the teams and the winner, Pet Pal Hotel, was announced in assembly on Friday. I will be offering the club again in the summer term for any more budding entrepreneurs! Mrs Young

New Artist of the Month

Claudia Eastburn

Claudia has been chosen as artist of the month for January for her pure enthusiasm,

enjoyment and ability shown in all art lessons and her keen participation in art club for

the last two terms! Well done Claudia, an artist of the future.

In response to the current topic being taught in Y2, Claudia has been sketching her own

interpretation of the Chinese willow pattern. She has made excellent observational

drawings to develop her own design.

Claudia enjoys her art club activity session every Thursday and she has worked hard to

develop a decorative fish design as part of our Hull ‘City of Culture project.’ Claudia is

currently turning her design into a fantastic print. Well done Claudia! All finished results

will be on display in our annual art exhibition in the summer term.

Homeless Project

"Don't accept that what's happening Is just a case of others' suffering

Or you'll find that you're joining in The turning away"

No more turning away

From the weak and the weary No more turning away

From the coldness inside

Just a world that we all must share It's not enough just to stand and stare

Is it only a dream that there'll be No more turning away?

Partial lyrics from Pink Floyd’s ‘On the Turning Away’

from the 1987 Album ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason’ The significance of the Pink Floyd song ‘On the Turning Away’ is a simple message that if there is someone in need of help, stop to help them, and don’t turn away. This was the message highlighted last Friday night on the 27th January as willing participants braved the stormy night to re-turn to school for our homeless sleepover. The children arrived eager to choose their bed for the night, simply a cardboard box. Having said their goodbyes to their parents they began to unpack their sleeping bags and huddled together with friends forming their own community. The Student Leadership team: Harry Mukerjea, Ruby Innes, Soley Fridriksdottir, William Anderson, Oscar Hogarth and Luke Fairfield, led a series of activities through the night to highlight and provoke discussions as they raised awareness of their social action project. Working collaboratively, the children, joined forces with local charity the Hull Homeless Community Project (HHCP) as they embarked on their campaign to raise awareness of the homeless community in Hull. Andrew Smith CEO of the Hull Homeless Community Project charity (HHCP) talked about his experiences of being homeless and the role the charity plays. Mrs Fletcher our catering manager returned to school to provide our soup kitchen experience and we had other visitors during the course of the evening. All the teachers who stayed during the evening activities to support the event were astounded by the high level thinking the children were demonstrating with their thought provoking questions and outpouring of empathy. Well done to all who attended and enthusiastically engaged with the workshops. In the morning I was impressed again as the majority of families donated their sleeping bags, air beds, pillow, hats, gloves, scarves and other items to the charity. I would personally like to thank everyone who has helped on this project to date and willingly gave their time and support for the children on Friday night. For those of us who stayed through the night, we were very impressed by how quickly and sensibly the children bedded down to sleep and by midnight the only noises were the rhythmic sounds of snoring. After picking up her son in the morning one parent Tweeted “A big ‘thank you’ to the staff that organised this and gave up their Friday night. [MY CHILD] had a great time and has also come home with an appreciation of how fortunate we are and renewed empathy for those that are not so. Possibly the best lesson a school could teach!” I know some of you continued to follow us through the night on Twitter but if you missed the updates please look back on @HullCollegiate. Below are a selection of pictures taken during the evenings activities. If you’d like to donate money, toiletries, shoes and warm clothes to the charity please drop them off at Prep Reception.

Is there life and sole left in your old shoes?

The student leadership team would like to ask you to donate your unwanted old shoes so that they can be passed to the home-less people in our community. We would like children’s shoes, female and male adult shoes in various sizes. We hope to receive at least one pair of shoes from all staff and pupils at Hull Collegiate. Please ensure the shoes are cleaned and polished with life still in them! Tie the laces together so the shoes don’t go for a walk of their own. Thank you!

Rex gets cultural!

Rex had a lovely time with Hannah, he went to see the enormous white shiny blade in Hull with Ethan, Hannah's younger cousin. Rex stood on the bench and saw the beautiful colours of the tip of the blade. We then visited the Maritime Museum and learnt about whales.
