Message from the General Manager

Sudha Bhana

Maree

Hi everyone,

Impossible to believe it is Autumn already, and I know for many of you the brief glimpse of Summer we had was nothing to get excited about, but hope- fully you have enjoyed the warmer weather and are looking forward to another year at your favourite Friendship Centre.

Don’t forget that we are always looking for photos and articles of interest, about our members and volunteers, as we all know that there is a story for everyone out there, and we would love you to share.

Congratulations again to the winner of our super Christmas prize pack, Olga Sloan, and thanks again to The Web Company for such a generous donation. Daphne Gordon, a member from both the Ellerslie and Panmure branches is the latest lucky winner, so do be sure to check out the puzzle page and you could be in the draw for our next mystery prize pack.

Have a delicious Easter and enjoy the cooler weather.

Cheers

We are now located in our new premises in Royal Oak, early in the New Year the Head Office team were busy beavers settling into our new nest while clearing out the old one. Leaving a place after many years is always bittersweet and I am sure many of you understand that some-times, downsizing and change is required to benefit our not-for-profit organization in the long term.

Communicare relies heavily on fundraising and sponsorship and I am always grateful to all our funding partners and donors for their generosity.

I would like to make special mention of the Lion Foundation who have generously funded 4 second-hand vehicles for Communicare to update our very aged fleet. The support from the Lion Foundation helps us continue delivering our services throughout the Auckland Community. Thank you for your incredible gift from the entire team and everyone here at Communicare. Once we have secured funding for branding our vehicles they will be displaying the Lion Foundation and Communicare logos in a town near you!

Our constant goal is to continue delivering a great service throughout our centres. It is also important to keep planning ahead for the future of Communicare, ensuring we look at ways we may introduce alternative services, attract new members and volunteers while increasing funding for operational costs. As members of Communicare we value your feedback and we welcome ideas in all our centres. Our last survey reflected that the majority of you were pleased with the way things run at your centres.

I would encourage you to help promote your local centre in your respective communities along with family and friends.

Together we make Communicare a great place to be a part of.

We have had some staff changes, Noeline who looks after Panmure and Ellerslie is only going to manage Panmure from next term and sadly Virginia is leaving our Avondale centre just before end of the term. We wish Virginia all the very best as she has been an integral part of the Communicare team running Avondale with great efficiency and we thank her for absolute hard work and effort in the past few years.

Easter is upon us along with the school holidays, so I hope the Easter bunny is most generous on chocolate eggs but not so much if your sugar levels are not in good shape. Wishing you all a lovely break. Kind regards, Sudha Bhana

KiwiConcern (NZ) Limited

Kiwi Concern is an authorised representative for ADT NevaAlone. ADT NevaAlone is accredited by MSD to provide government-funded medical alarms. Kiwi Concern proudly promotes and services medical alarms on behalf of ADT Security throughout New Zealand, and we have clients and consultants in every area of the country, from far north to deep south.

Equipment Our medical alarms are the state of the art, and made right here in Christchurch, New Zealand. We looked all over the world, in fact, and found the best technology right here in our backyard. The pendant (the little button that is worn around the neck or wrist) is very lightweight and slim, making it as unobtrusive as possible. This pendant has a range of up to 200m from the house – the longest of its kind in NZ. We can provide an alarm that sends a signal via the home land-line, or, if there is no home phone line, we can provide a GPRS version, that sends a sig-nal over the cellular network.

Funding The process to apply for funding is very simple. Your GP will have to approve the applica-

tion, by completing and signing a set of WINZ forms

These forms are then given to Work and Income for processing (generally 2-4 weeks to process)

We install a medical alarm once the doctor has approved, in order to afford the clients monitoring as soon as possible.

For more information or if you would like one of our specialists to visit your centre, speak to your coordinator about arranging a visit.

Call 0800 111 203 and ask for Patricia

We love to hear from our members and volunteers, so if you have an interesting story, or some family photos you would like to share, “then and now” shots are always lots of fun, do send them along and we will feature them in

one of our upcoming newsletters.

Today’s riddle for seniors… and the young at heart!

Here is the situation:

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed.

On your right side is a sharp drop-off, on your left side is an elephant travelling at the same speed as you.

Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it.

Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo.

What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation?

Answer:

Time to get off the carrousel and go

home.

Carrot & Fennel Soup - something a little different

• 1.6 litres vegetable stock

• 100 ml single cream , to serve

Method

• Preheat the oven to 190C/gas 5. Put the carrots, fennel and onion in a roasting dish and toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Roast for 20 minutes, then add the garlic cloves. Volunteer Corner

I have always mentioned our Volunteers are like gold in Communicare. We are fortunate to have such commitment and this year I would like to enhance our Volunteer Engagement within Communicare.

Some of you may wonder what this is all about. It is about recognising volunteer needs, listening to suggestions, seeking feed-back. Many of you are in contact with your coordinators about the day to day needs for your centre which is wonderful, and you are acknowledged and valued within your centres.

At Head Office, we want to improve our database system, (which means obtaining funding) so we can keep a track- reminder of your anniversaries and much more. We want to hear your ideas on the future of Communicare, how we can retain volunteers and encourage more new volunteers.

You are all aware of our Volunteer Kit which explains in more detail about volunteer roles, but would you like some type of training/information or can you see volunteer roles changing in centres? Perhaps you have some valuable skills you could share in our centres?

If you have been doing your role for many years and some of you have a good 40-50 years of knowledge and service under your belts. How do we ensure that knowledge is shared and that it continues if you decide to “retire” from your role?

There are many questions and it will take time to work through but we are dedicated to ensuring Communicare flourishes with volunteers. Don’t be surprised if you are invited for feedback during this year in various forums. You are a big part of Communicare so we want to hear your thoughts.

Make sure you take a break over the holidays and of course I leave you with a quote from The Secret series “Expectation is a powerful attractive force. Expect the things you want, and don’t expect the things you don’t want.”

Kind regards Sudha Bhana—General Manager

Graeme Dyson - known affectionately as the ‘Poster Boy’ of Communicare, as his picture adorns most of our advertising materials. Graeme has been a volunteer at the Pakuranga Friendship Centre since 2000. Always ready to help with any project - last Christmas he produced dozens of little wooden trees for guests across all the centres to paint and decorate, which was a fun and challenging activity - even the Admin team got in on the act.

Over the years, Graeme has volunteered countless hours driving members to and from the centre, assisting with activities and games and generally turning his hand to whatever needs to be done.

Volunteer Profile

Communicare Field Officer Robyn Liddle visited the Balmoral Seventh Day Adventist School this month to pick up a collection of non-perishable food items that

pupils had collected to donate to Communicare and the Balmoral centre. Robyn says, “The friendship Centres

provide morning tea and a light lunch so we are always able to use donations towards these”.
