Message from the CEO:OpportunitiesThis year 2017 is the age of New Opportunities like we have never seen them before!

For a long time we have spoken in society and the business community in this country of a two tiered multi (or two) speed economy. It is a little more difficult to gaze into the future or the Crystal Ball than ever before.

However with the impossible achievements this sector has

made over recent years, it would be unthinkable to be pessimistic about the future.

Opportunities for the visionary abound and the Rapid Changes and Technology Revolution are fantastic challenges for our sector and we have a good opportunity to catch up where we lag behind and continue to punch above our weight.

In planning the Board set six projects which were rationalised into four to remove overlap and

with complete confidence we can report two have been completed and we are able to refocus our effort to achieving the remaining two while continuing to maintain the original projects as we go. How exciting and what incredible opportunities for those who can embrace and see them have to grow their companies into the future.

We wish you every success as you embrace these opportunities.

Logan welcomes new cold storage providerhttp://www.loed.com.au/home/news/news-articles/logan-welcomes-new-cold-storage-provider Competenz are transforming the way

the New Zealand fire industry learn with help from the Fire Protection Association Australia {FPA Australia} and Fire Protection Association New Zealand (FPANZ). The partnership will help deliver best practice industry training to the industry through the development of an online learning solution.

The three parties have committed to working together to share learning content, to support consistency of training between the two countries and enable shared savings in resource development costs.

Specifically, the partnership will allow learning resources developed by FPA Australia to be modified for the New Zealand market and then delivered online by Compete nz, supported by FPANZ.

Competenz General Manager Product Development and Quality Assurance Nick Thomson said he hoped to make the new learning materials available to the New Zealand fire protection industry in 2017.

“FPA Australia will shortly provide their learning materials to help inform our development of the new on line programmes,” he said.

Competenz has assembled a team to transition the content from the Australian context. Once these materials have been adapted to meet the New Zealand requirements, we will be making announcements about the availability of these qualifications.”

“These materials have been sorely needed in the New Zealand market for some time and we look forward to offering them to learners and ensuring

the best possible learning materials are developed for this critically important industry.”

FPA Australia CEO Scott Williams said the move would lead to more consistent educational outcomes for learners in New Zealand and Australia.

“Our vision is reducing the risk of fire to life property and the environment, for a safer community and this agreement goes a long way towards achieving this,” he said.

“This partnership will ensure that best practice fire protection industry training can be conveniently delivered to leamers in New Zealand and this will greatly increase the portability of skills as individuals move between our two countries.”

Scott Lawson, FPANZ Executive Director said the agreement paved the way for closer ties between all the organisations in the future.

“This initiative is just the start of a strong partnership between our organisations to ensure we can continue to deliver for our members and the broader fire protection industry,” he said.

‘By sharing resources and costs, all learners will benefit and we know we are delivering the best quality industry training available. FPA Australia should be congratulated on the quality of their training materials, which are world class, and we are delighted to be able to access them.”More information about each of the partner organisations is available from their websites:

Building watchdog bill clears SenateThe Turnbull government’s plan to restore the building industry watchdog has cleared the Senate.Legislation for the Australian Building and Construction Commission — first established by the Howard coalition government in 2005 and replaced by Labor in 2007 — passed the upper house on Wednesday morning.

It followed the passage last week of legislation establishing a registered

organisations commission — the other bill used to trigger the July 2 double-dissolution federal election.

What is a Code of Practice?

A Code of Practice is a set of enforceable rules setting out an industry’s commitments to deliver a certain standard of practice.Codes of Practice are intended to raise industry standards, complement legislative requirements, and aim to encourage consumer confidence in a particular

industry.

Members, Designers/Builders and End users need to take particular note that CODE Compliance should not be claimed if only a selection of CODE construction example details are incorporated in the project design. That does not constitute CODE Compliance, CODE measures are not a shopping list with items to be selected at will. The CODE must be followed and adopted in full. The legality of suggesting otherwise is of a major concern to the parties involved in the collaborative process of developing the CODE.

State by State TOOL BOX events will be planned and announced in the coming financial year and these will be focused around ensuring that the positive messages around safety that we heard at the conference are more widely communicated.

Information as to how our Industry Code of Practice can

support all stakeholders in our Industry in improving quality and safety will be a key feature to show what’s in it for us all.

These TOOL BOX events will be presented in a practical manner and to facilitate improved communication and engagement across the whole of Industry.

Many types of activities in industry sectors have the technical potential to be automated, but that potential varies significantly across activities.

1Applying expertise to decision making, planning, and creative tasks.

2Unpredictable physical work (physical activities and the operation of machinery) is performed in unpredictable environments, while in predictable physical work, the environments are predictable.

In practice, automation will depend on more than just technical feasibility. Five factors are involved: technical feasibility; costs to automate; the relative scarcity, skills, and cost of workers who might otherwise do the activity; benefits (eg, superior performance) of automation beyond labor-cost substitution; and regulatory and social-acceptance considerations.

Dropbox hack: 5 reasons why Dropbox isn’t secure enough for the boardroom16 Nov 2016 10:32 AM

Courtenay Brown (Administrator)

The usernames and passwords of nearly 70 million Dropbox users were stolen and posted for sale on the internet, the company disclosed in August, due to a 2012 hack. While a Dropbox company blog post assured its users that their passwords remained safely encrypted and stored data was not exposed, the hack serves as a reminder why cloud storage and file-sharing service should not be used for storing and sharing sensitive board documents.

By taking advantage of the widespread availability of high-speed network connectivity and the declining cost of storage, Dropbox’s proposition led many companies to replace local data storage with cloud storage.

However, some of the very features that make Dropbox so popular—such as easy access to files on mobile devices and easy sharing with anyone—pose a serious security risk when the service is used to store and share boardroom data. So much so that, according to a 2016 report by MobileIron, a developer of enterprise-level secure mobile access management solutions, the Dropbox mobile app remains the most banned app by American employers.

DRoPBox DRAwBACkSHere’s why Dropbox may not be secure enough for board use:

1. MUltiPlE iNStANCES of filES. Dropbox, by default, creates a duplicate mirror folder on each user’s computer, containing all of the files uploaded to the cloud. Once the link between the local and the cloud folder is severed—such as when the user is not connected to the internet— the two folders become separate entities.

2. You don’t know where your files are. With Dropbox, users have no way to determine where their “cloud-stored” files are physically stored. Cloud storage

services do not disclose this information, nor do they disclose which other companies’ files share the same server or servers. According to InfoWorld, “multi-tenancy”—the practice of storing the files of multiple customers on the same server—poses not only the risk of private data accidentally leaking to other tenants, but also that of data theft due to vulnerabilities in other tenants’ files.

3. CoNCERNS ovER ENCRyPtioN AND filE tRANSfER SECURity. Even though, according to Dropbox, file data is stored in discrete file blocks that are fragmented and encrypted, IT administrators have no control over the data security and encryption.

4. DAtA oN A StolEN lAPtoP CAN’t AlwAyS BE REMotEly wiPED. While Dropbox provides the ability to remotely wipe the Dropbox folder from a stolen laptop containing sensitive data , for example, it can only do so if the stolen laptop is connected to the internet. Without internet connection there’d be nothing to prevent an outsider from copying the files from the Dropbox folder.

5. No CoNtRol ovER tHE ENCRyPtioN/DECRyPtioN kEy. Dropbox, not the user, holds the encryption/decryption keys for the user’s files. If this key falls into the wrong hands (as, according to Symantec, was the case in the Stuxnet malware attack) a company’s files may be compromised.

Companies can and should do better to protect their sensitive data than rely on one-size-fits-all cloud storage services. Beyond finding the right platform for your company—whether it be a dedicated board data portal or a custom system—the challenge lies in educating employees and executives of the perils of sharing sensitive files using the same cloud storage services they use for their own personal files. There’s simply too much at risk.

Another victim of social media trollingThis week a Brisbane restaurant closed its doors, not due to poor service or food, but online bullying and media coverage over its name. The name depicted the era of British colonialism and was branded by a minority as racist.

Due to fear of being abused, food bloggers and writers stayed away. As usual those who were supposedly so offended and outraged weren’t customers and many weren’t even in the same city. Almost all of them have likely never risked personal assets to start a business as these owners did. Some may have even enjoyed causing emotional and financial anguish to a hard-working Australian couple they didn’t even know.

Sadly that’s life in today’s new media world. There should be easier legal options for defamation but there are not. The lesson is clear for small and large companies — think about the ramifications before you speak, post, advertise and even choose a name.Lyall Mercer Managing Director, Mercer PR

Surf the green wave or drown? What are Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and how are they changing B2B sales conversations? Jonas Bengtsson, CEO and co-founder of Edge Enivironment, provides his opinions.A recent market study conducted by Accenture and the UN revealed that 85% of consumers expect companies to improve their quality of life, which goes in hand with addressing environmental and societal impact of their business. In fact, they put as much pressure on business as on government.

Blame it on generational turnover, regulatory pressure, The Great Sinister Hippy Lobby or common sense — it doesn’t matter — the market is growing eco-savvier and the trend isn’t slowing down. A business unwilling to pick up its slack, or hoping to hide within complex supply chains, is more and more likely to face scrutiny or be selected out.

Ask VW, BP, BHP and Bhopal how the environment factors into their share value and business success. Ask the merchants for palm oil, rainforest timber furniture and tiger prawns if they have to spend much of their time on the defensive before they get even close to pitching their product.

You have two options:

1. Hope that a competitive price and track record will keep you sweet.

2. Adapt and excel in the new information — and transparency-hungry world.

GEt yoUR CREDENtiAlS RiGHtAs a supplier, you don’t want to carry around a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle of documents and reports to demonstrate your credentials in the technical, environment and social spheres. You’ll want a one-stop-shop, straight-to-the-point, comprehensive, credible and transparent document.

As a customer, wouldn’t it be great if you could have complete transparency and trust in the products and services you buy? And wouldn’t it be great if you could find that information in one place?

Enter the one-stop shop for product information — Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs.

EP wHAt?An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a standardised and verified way of quantifying the environmental impacts of a product based on a consistent set of rules known as PCRs (Product Category Rules). Industry experts can develop EPD reporting rules for any product or service and the ISO 14025 standard sets the reporting scope. Every EPD is independently verified to ensure the information data is correct and balanced.

Green buildings and infrastructure rating tools and government design and procurement guidelines are singling out EPDs as the go-to credentials and building block for optimised designs and solutions.

According to Jorge Chapa, the Green Building Council of Australia’s director of market transformation, both manufacturers and buyers benefit from EPDs.

“EPDs give manufacturers a tool that can help them identify opportunities for improvement along their supply chain and also a strong selling point that increasingly resonates with environmentally aware consumers. For buyers, an EPD provides a framework for making informed product comparisons.”

QUiCk GUiDE oN How to USE AN EPD

StEP 1Decide what you want and need from your suppliers of products and materials. Here are a few examples:

• Fit for purpose, durable and low maintenance — an EPD provides a comprehensive overview, saving

you time.

• Complete transparency on what went into the product — no surprises or nasty chemicals.

• Manufactured in accordance with a sound environmental management system, preferably ISO 14001 certified.

• Low carbon footprint — we know the urgency and challenge to build low-carbon assets.

• Low energy use, or at least low in fossil fuels — the world is de-fossilising.

• Low water use — water is perhaps the main limit to growth, so let’s be mindful about water use.

• Guidance for appropriate installation, use and disposal/re-use/recycling of

Page 11: Message from the CEO: Opportunities

12

the product — especially for buildings and infrastructure, turn today’s assets into future material resources.

• It’s a bonus if the product or company supplying the product carries any

additional third-party certifications, such as FSC, GECA, NCOS and other sustainable certifications.

StEP 2Chances are you can’t have it all. You need to set priorities in terms of what you value the most, what constitutes a show stopper and what’s nice to have.

StEP 3Get your key suppliers engaged. Let them know you’re stepping it up to compete in the top-end sustainability, low-risk and information-transparency space. Let them know that EPDs are on your wish list. This is not a solo act — you and your supply chain are one to your clients.

StEP 4Don’t wait for the client to ask you; go to them and tell them you’re down with life cycle thinking, you have your third-party-verified credentials in order and how you deliver triple-bottom-line-optimised solutions with low-risk, best-value, outstanding trust.

StEP 5With your next client, you have your ISO-certified approach set. If there are questions about how you operate in a responsible manner, look after the environment, employees, investors, the local community, the global community, future generations and even past generations and cultural heritage — it’s all in your EPD.

SwEll foRECASt“EPDs provide transparent and clear information to help us identify products that will reduce the environmental impact of our developments across their entire life cycle,” said Paolo Bevilacqua, general manager, sustainability – Frasers Property Australia.

EPDs are ideal for organisations looking to source goods and services in a way that achieves value for money and generates benefits — not only to the organisation but also to society and the economy — while minimising damage to the environment. The new sustainable procurement standard ISO 20400 (currently BS8903) coming out next year provides the framework for how EPDs and life cycle thinking fits together.

Life cycle management is added to the new ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management. EPDs offer the standardised information exchange format from your suppliers to you, and from you to your clients and stakeholders.

Humility Not many politicians seem to know the meaning of the word, but humility is an important part of communications.

There are times to be assertive, proud and even aggressive. There are situations when you should defend, boast and congratulate; but good communicators also understand that sometimes, humility is required. A humble nature can break down barriers, draw people to you, soften the impact, make your message more believable, promote sincerity and create trust. Humility is not weakness, nor does it necessarily imply wrongdoing. It is not an admission of defeat or a display of indecisiveness.

Humility says, “it’s not all about me”, “I understand”, “I feel what you are feeling” and in some cases, “I’m sorry”. In times of crisis humility can be a vital factor, whereas arrogance or apathy will usually make a bad situation worse. There is really no downside to being humble - It will make you a better communicator.

FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION NEW ZEALAND

Geoff and Les will remain active contributors within the association via involvement in their respective SIGs. The council is an important part of the association and provides strategic direction, so it is important we have a wide and varied selection of people filling these roles. This year, four people were nominated for the two vacancies. The two elected council members are

CommentaryWelcome to December’s Newsletter. Like most of you, the association has experienced a flurry of activity over the last couple of months, so as the year draws to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to provide an update on some of these.

SIG NewsAs most members will be aware, we recently put all SIG Chair positions up for election. While this process highlighted some minor gaps in our constitution, overall the process was fair, and we will look to fine tune the constitutional gaps early in the new year. The outcome of the elections has placed four new people into the following positions: HOFFE SIG – Steve Smith; Contractors SIG – Kiran Soma; Evac SIG – Phil Jackson; Passive SIG – Paul Ryan. I welcome them into their respective positions and into the national council. These members represent the SIGs at a council level to affect association strategy and direction.

I also make special mention of the following outgoing SIG Chairs. HOFFE SIG – Lance Hunt; Passive SIG – Ron Green; Evac SIG – Ela Langford. These people have worked hard and collectively donated many hours of their own time over the past few years to help drive the values and directions of the SIGs. On behalf of the association, I wish them well and am very grateful for their support. I look forward to them continuing as active members of their respective SIGs.

AGMWe held our AGM on 14 December. This was a great opportunity to provide an update on the affairs of the association and our strategy and goals for the next year. The timing of this year’s AGM was dictated by a number of events, including our annual audit being delayed and FireNZ, that pushed it out to a very busy time of the year, so I thank the members who were able to attend. My intention is to hold the AGM earlier next year to help make it accessible to more people. The annual report is available to all current financial members of the association.

Council VotingThis year, two council members completed their 2-year terms on the council. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff Willis and Les Mellars for their considerable contributions over the years. Both

We also ran a careers event as part of the conference, with the aim of attracting more youth to the industry. This was a great success, and we plan to repeat it next year.

I take great pride in the growth of FireNZ, and industry support is greater every year. The more support it gets, the more it delivers back to the industry. I would also like to highlight that we are booked in again for next year on

11–13 October at the same venue – ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane. This gets us back to our usual timing slightly earlier in the year.

Oxford Economics Acquires Controlling Stake in Long-Standing Australian Forecaster, BIS Shrapnel

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 – One of the world’s foremost independent global advisory firms, UK-headquartered Oxford Economics, has acquired a controlling stake in one of Australia’s oldest and leading independent industry analysts and economic forecasters, BIS Shrapnel. BIS Shrapnel will merge with the Australian operation of Oxford Economics, with the new organisation to be named BIS Oxford Economics. “This investment by Oxford Economics sees the merging of BIS Shrapnel’s deep knowledge of the Australian and New Zealand economies with Oxford Economics’ detailed understanding of the global economy,” said Robert Mellor, Managing Director, BIS Oxford Economics. Integrating the Oxford Economics Global Model with BIS Shrapnel’s existing forecasting framework will allow the new firm to assess market trends and quantify the impacts for its clients at the global, national and city levels. This increases capabilities to support both Australian and international clients as they look to better understand the global economy and the opportunities and risks this presents. “The acquisition brings together Oxford Economics’ rigorous global modelling and analytical framework with BIS Shrapnel’ expertise across the Australian economy, in particular in forecasting investment cycles,” said Adrian Cooper, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Economist, Oxford Economics. “This agreement expands the Oxford Economics Group to more than 300 staff globally, making it the largest independent economics research firm in the world, and allows us to support our clients in understanding economic trends and their impacts both domestically and globally.” “The integration of BIS Shrapnel and Oxford Economics provides complementary services which will better meet the forecasting needs of our clients to guide their decision-making on strategy, investment and risk assessment,” said David Walker, Director, BIS Oxford Economics. “This will enable the new firm to provide a greater

“Major political, social and economic events in nations abroad have profound global impacts — look no further than Brexit or Trump,” said Mellor. “Through this agreement, we will be better able to provide our clients with economic forecasts driven by comprehensive analysis of the international economy, with more detailed understanding of geographies like China, India and the Rest of Asia, US, UK, Europe and Japan through Oxford Economics’ global team.”

the new entity will operate from BiS Shrapnel’s existing offices in Australia. Robert Mellor will lead BiS oxford Economics, with Dr frank Gelber to remain Chief Economist and Director. the CoDE (iPCA Code of Practice)

The behaviour of Insulated Sandwich Panels (ISP) in fires has been a concern of Fire Brigades for some time, not only in Australia, but also internationally. To address these Fire Brigade concerns, the Insulated Panel Council Australasia Ltd (IPCA) developed an industry Code of Practice for the design specification, manufacture, construction, maintenance and risk management for structures built using all ISP.

the current version is available at: http://www.insulatedpanelcouncil.org/the-code-latest-version/

iPCa Ltd — NoteThe IPCA Board and Executives have become aware that there is some confusion about ISP & IPCA Ltd’s position.

1. IPCA Ltd represents ALL panel types.

2. IPCA Ltd Code of Practice first was developed to address concerns by approval authorities and fire services about ISP performance and behaviour in traditional applications . The website reflects this historical fact.

3. Today CODE measures apply equally to all panel types and we believe improves the performance of all panels equally when used in accordance with internationally recognised tests and correctly applied. See the latest version of the CODE on our website http://www.insulatedpanelcouncil.org/the-code-latest-version/
