Homework Policy Policy: The Department of Education’s Homework Policy has recently been updated. Our school Homework Policy/Procedures document has also been updated to coincide with this. It is also available on our web site.

School Policies: Please see our website for the following policies: Discipline Policy, Anti-Bullying Plan, School Learning and Support Policy, Compliments and Complaints, Aboriginal Education Plan, Home Reading Policy.

Anti-Racism Contact Officer: Public education in NSW has a proud history of equity and inclusiveness.

Racism can take many forms, such as jokes or comments that cause offence or hurt, sometimes unintentionally; name-calling or verbal abuse; harassment or intimidation, or commentary in the media or online that inflames hostility towards certain groups.

At its most serious, racism can result in acts of physical abuse and violence. Racism can directly or indirectly exclude people from accessing services or participating in employment, education, sport and social activities.

It can also occur at a systemic or institutional level through policies, conditions or practices that disadvantage certain groups.

It often manifests through unconscious bias or prejudice.

On a structural level, racism serves to perpetuate inequalities in access to power, resources and opportunities across racial and ethnic groups.

The belief that a particular race or ethnicity is inferior or superior to others is sometimes used to justify such inequalities. — Australian Human Rights Commission, National Anti-Racism Strategy July 2012, page 4 If you or someone you know has been a victim of racism at school, please report such to our Anti-Racism Contact Officer, and Assistant Principal (Welfare) Mrs Janelle Hodsdon, or to myself the Principal.

School Oval Improvements: Thank you to the P&C for donating the funds to core and treat our school oval during the recent holiday break. The grass looks so much greener and with our General Assistant Mr Ross Cooper working hard during Term 4 and the break, we have more soil and a more level playing field.

Welcome to our new Kindy students!

Kindergarten Interviews with your child. These interviews, and seeing your child taking part in activities 1:1, assisted us in developing relevant individual and small group literacy and numeracy learning activities for Term 1. As a result of having held these initial interviews, Kindergarten will not be having 3-Way-Conferences in Semester 1. They will be having conferences in Term 3, as all students/parents do, following Semester 1 Reports being sent home.

Any parent who wishes to meet with their child’s classroom teacher, or other teachers/staff members, throughout the year, please contact the school office to make an appointment for a mutually convenient time to meet.

If you have any concerns, complaints or positive feedback, please attempt to speak to your child’s classroom teacher in the first instance. Following this, please arrange to meet with your child’s Assistant Principal if you still have concerns. Assistant Principals/Stage Leaders are as follows:

K-2: Ms Vanessa Bain;

3-6: Miss Tahlia Stafford and Miss Caitlin Patterson;

Support: Mr Brenton Mace;

Welfare: Mrs Janelle Hodsdon;

Administration: Ms Penny Crowley.

First day fun!

Staffing Changes: Mrs Donald has chosen to teach part-time for the remainder of the year. As a result of this, I have made the decision to have Miss

Natasha Sconfienza teach 1D on a full-time basis. She commenced on the class on Thursday, February 13 and will be teaching 1D (which will now be called 1N) for the remainder of 2020, full-time. Miss Sconfienza has taught Year 1 at Merimbula PS before and is looking forward to teaching the 1N children this year. Student Reports and Parent-

Teacher-Student Interviews: 3-Way-Conferences will take place next Week February 17 and 18 (February 18 and 19 for K/1S Year 1 students) and at the beginning of Term 3, July 27 and 28. If you have any questions about your child’s learning, progress or needs in the meantime, please contact the administration office on 64951266 to arrange a meeting time with your child’s class teacher.

For our new families, Student Reports are sent home at the end of Term 2 and 4.

We are currently looking into trialling a new format of school student reports, with the support of our P&C. We will let you know more about this in our next Newsletter.

Learning and Support Provisions

Term 1: Next week letters will be sent home to parents/caregivers of children receiving a form of learning support in Term 1. Support offered by our school ranges from: assistance from our Learning Assistance and Support Teacher, Assistant Principal Welfare Support, School Learning Support Officer (Teacher Aide) Support, support in literacy/numeracy, School Counsellor Support, interagency support, small group social skills lessons, academic assessments, mentoring, funding and/or support class applications and more.

At Merimbula Public School we take pride in offering a range of quality support provisions for students. If your child brings home a letter acknowledging that they will be receiving additional support with their learning, please give Mr Brenton Mace, your child’s class teacher or me a call to further discuss your child’s needs and how we will be assisting them if you would like further clarification. If you think that your child needs additional support, please let your child’s classroom teacher know. A blank version of the Learning and Support Provisions letter to parents (including the supports we offer) will be uploaded onto our website next week.

Canteen Menu & Volunteers for

If you have any time to spare this term (even if for only an hour or two) and you can assist in our canteen, please complete the volunteers form that has been sent home with today’s newsletter.

Voluntary School Contributions: Whilst our school, as with other public primary schools in NSW, does not have fees, parents/carers are invited to pay a ‘voluntary school contribution’. We have kept our contribution down to $45 for the school year, per child once again. All funds donated in 2020 will go towards new playground equipment for students. Special Religious Education (SRE)

and Scripture: Throughout this year, Christian Special Religious Education (SRE) and Catholic Scripture classes are being offered to students. In past years there has been a Kindergarten class, a Year 1/2 Class, a Year 3/4 Class and a Year 5/6

Library News: Welcome back! It is fantastic to see everyone return to school, eager to learn and excited about the ‘makeover’ that the library has had (the new carpet looks amazing)! This year the students will continue exploring different aspects of text and media, with a focus on increasing the borrowing rate of students at our school. Daily reading benefits all students, with some studies showing that even just reading a minimum of 15 minutes a day can

accelerate reading gains. Many students have already come to school prepared with their own (clearly labelled) library bags to protect their borrowed books, as well as a document folder to store their work. Parents and carers can help their children by reminding them to pack their library bags on their scheduled borrowing days, which are: Monday - FL, FH, FM, 2B, 4/5P Tuesday - KV, K/1S, 1/2K, 4M, 5C Wednesday - 1D, 3/4H, 5/6H, 6D Thursday - 2/3M, 3M Friday - KS Once again, let us work together to build a lifelong love of reading! School Librarian - Mrs Feneck.

Welcome to Term 1! Welcome to our new and returning parents. It is great to see all of the children back at school after the break. Children in years 1 and 2 have settled back into the routine of school and are working well. Kindergarten children have begun their first week at school. It is likely that there have been and will be a few tears, as well as a few cheers, while they settle into the routine of coming to school each day. It helps to be gentler with them as they are likely to be more tired than usual. Please know that our staff are very experienced and will do everything that they can to make the transition to school a positive experience for your child. If you have any concerns or questions, please let us know. We have 6 and a half classes in K-2 this year. Ms Jodi Vaughn, Mrs Beth Smith will be teaching Kindergarten – KV and KS, while Mrs Jenni Smith will be teaching a Kindergarten/Year 1 class, K/1S. Mrs Mary Pearce will be teaching KS on Wednesdays. Home Reading: This program will begin in week 5 of this term. Children will bring home a home reader booklet containing information about the program and a place to record what they have read, as well as home readers in their padded envelope or plastic folder. It would be great if you could assist us by ensuring that children bring their books back to change regularly. Class teachers will let you know the days on which readers will be changed.

Assemblies: K-2 assemblies will be held twice a term in 2020, on a Thursday afternoon. Children in 2B will be hosting our first assembly on Thursday, 5th March. Family and friends of children in this class are invited to join us in the Jackson Hall at 2.10pm. Welcome Back: Welcome back to all of our students and a special welcome to our new students and families. We have an exciting first term planned in Stage 2 and 3 and are looking forward to an engaging and educational term ahead.

These texts help support our student’s understanding by telling an historical narrative. Students will look closely at comprehension strategies through “The Little Wooden Horse” by Mark Wilson and “Grims, Crims and Convicts” by Jackie French in Stage 2 and “Tom Appleby: Convict Boy” by Jackie French in Stage 3. They will also engage with informative texts linked to our Conceptual unit and look at ways information is represented.

In writing, students will be learning about narrative texts and will construct their own imaginative stories. Towards the end of the term, they will also begin look at persuasive texts and will begin to develop their knowledge of how texts are structured to represent a point of view or opinion.

The Sound Waves program will be used again this year for Spelling. This program uses a phonemic approach towards spelling and will be used across the school K-6.

Students are encouraged to bring in a book of their own choice to use during our Literacy time. Please assist your child in choosing a book that is suitable. Your child’s class teacher will be able to support you in this should you have any questions.

Welcome Back: We would like to welcome back everyone for a new year and we look forward to working with you and your children. Our Family Classes will be running under the same structure, with a few changes in personnel, with some of our students moving on to high school and some new students coming into the school. If you have any questions about the classrooms please see your child’s classroom teacher.

Support Plans: The support plans that are used within our classrooms will continue and with the upcoming three way conferences we will be looking to review these plans and make the necessary adjustments where required. We value your input and look forward to discussing them. Once they are collated plans will be sent home and we ask that you read through them and if you are happy with them to please sign them and send them back into school. During the meeting teachers will also discuss your future plans for your children and in particular those students who are in Year 5 and 6, as we need to begin planning for their transition into high school.

Expo and Welcome BBQ stall fun!

Programs: Within the Family Classes we offer tailored programs that are targeted at the individual needs of each child, which is reflected in their ‘Individual Education Plan (IEP)’. Last year we began report on each child’s goals and this is an approach that we will be used for students across the school who have an IEP. We also follow each stages set programs and incorporate them into our classroom practice.

Rotations and Shopping: We are looking to send a permission note out shortly explaining the class rotations we undertake. The three rotations we will be running are cooking, wood work and dance. Students will go with a new teacher every two weeks and will rotate between each focus area. Notes will need to be returned for students to participate in the activities. As part of the cooking program, FL will be going to the shops each week to collect the appropriate ingredients. A note will also need to be returned for students to be able to go off site. FM and FH may also venture to the shops to get items required for our Brewda Coffee business that the classes have been running on a Friday.
