T THE SHIELD MERCY HOSPITALS AUXILIARY NEWSLETTER
Mercy Volunteers, there from the start, with a helping hand and a caring heart. May 2016
Robin Hunt, Supervisor Of Volunteer Services
Well April sure did fly by but it was tons of fun too. I really hope everyone enjoyed themselves during Volunteer Appreciation Week. My favorite day besides the luncheon was Red Carpet Selfies, you all really got into that right along with the staff. Also if you haven’t had a moment to check out the video created by the Marketing team please visit the Dignity Health Facebook page and check it out. If you did not get a mug that was distributed at the luncheon I still have a few left just let me know and I’ll leave it for you in the Auxiliary office. Congratulations to Jin Yi, a two time winner at our award luncheon with the Special Service Award and Golden G.L.O.B.E! Both very well deserved honors for her. It’s time to schedule our uniform fittings to change over to the new uniforms. Now that does not mean we will start with the uniforms next week or probably not even next month but we need to get our order in ASAP. Please see the flyer in the email with additional information on uniform fittings. Also many of you have had questions about other areas as it relates to the new uniforms (ie. What should be worn under the new uniform, can a second shirt be purchased, etc.) We are working on those details but if you have a question please feel free to email me and I will add to our list. We will have a special guest at our next board meeting, Director of Security Shad Reeves. He will come to address questions some Auxilians have about security issues at the facilities and share a security update with us. Lastly, Bruce Peters mentioned in our last management meeting that if anyone has suggestions on how we can increase our bottom line please share. Due to the payer mix since the changes in health care, Dignity Health is facing some financial challenges and we all need to chip in to help where we can. If you have any suggestions please feel free to forward to me and I will pass along for our department. Thanks for all you do, if I don’t say it enough I’m grateful to work with each of you and count it as a blessing every day. As Jan always says Huge Hugs! Robin

Alice Brown, Mercy Auxiliary President
HAPPY SPRING EVERYONE. April showers bring May flowers and everywhere you
look the flowers are in full abundance. April has come and gone and I’m still trying
to figure out where it went. The Auxiliary sure had a whirl wind month.
The first week we were busy with 4 days of our Home Décor Show. Eric always
brings a great variety of merchandise and there is always something for everyone.
We celebrated National Volunteer week from April 11th
through April 15th
.
Something was planned for every day. Robin treated us with special surprises and
treats. We had fun taking “selfies” with our employees and enjoying the “candy bar”
with lots of sweet treats. On Wednesday April 13th
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
hosted a luncheon for our hospitals in Bakersfield. It was great seeing the Auxiliary’s from Mercy, Memorial,
San Joaquin and Kern Medical visiting and enjoying a fantastic lunch. As if we hadn’t had enough to eat this week,
on Thursday April 14th
our hospital hosted a wonderful Awards luncheon for us at the Petroleum Club. Gail Burch,
Scholarship Chairperson along with Pat Lindsay, presented scholarships to six of our graduating Junior Volunteer
students. The scholarships ranged from $500.00 to $5,000.00. Single stemmed red roses were presented to our
volunteers who became members from April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016. Robin presented a new award this
year called the G.O.L.D.E.N. Globe award. The nominations were made by the volunteers. I had the honor of
presenting the “Special Service” award. Jin Yi received both the Special Service Auxiliary award and the
G.O.L.D.E.N. Globe award. Well-deserved Jin and congratulations again!
I had the privilege of presenting a check in the amount of $101,055.00 to Bruce Peters and Misty DeLaTorre from
Friends of Mercy.
On a sad note, Barbara Bair passed away on April 8, 2016. She was our Corresponding Secretary and Chair of the
Birth Center. She will be missed by all.
Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is Sunday May 8th
. Visit our Southwest and Downtown Gift Shops to take care of
your shopping. They have a great selection! Thank you for supporting our Gift Shops. The money we give to the
hospital every year is money we make from both our shops. I would like to thank Darlene Powers and Christine
Higgins, our Gift Shop managers and all their hard workers for all they do.
Just a quick reminder about your uniform. Look in the mirror before you leave for your shift. Are you wearing a
white shirt or blouse with a collar with your jacket or your scrub top that is wrinkle free, white pants and white
rubber soled shoes with white socks. Remember, your shoes must be white and clean, cloth shoes, including denim
are not permitted. No colored or patterned shoes of any type.
May should be a much quieter month for us. Our Board meeting will be on Wednesday May 11th
at 9:30 in the
Clerou Room and is open to all our volunteers. Plan on coming and meeting your board members, meeting new
people and learning what is going on in the Auxiliary and the hospital. Plus, we have donuts.
“Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later”.
Og Mandino
Hugs to all,
Alice

Our Mercy Auxiliary just lost a dear member, Barbara Bair through death. She
was a beautiful, enthusiastic, lovely and faith filled woman who loved serving
our patients and family members. She was so happy because she came from a
family who dedicated their lives to Mercy as volunteers in the Auxiliary. Her
grandmother, Mary Lozano, was one of the original members of the Mercy
Auxiliary which began in 1955. Her aunt Esther Lozano, a Mercy Auxilian,
invited her niece, Barbara to become part of the Auxiliary. She was delighted
and joined about four years ago. She was so happy to carry on the family legacy
of compassionate service. We thank the Lozano Family for their commitment
and dedication to Mercy over the years. Surely Barbara was a true self-giving
person. We will always remember Barbara. Please keep her family in your
prayers.
Sr. Judy Morasci, RSM

Meet Our Junior Volunteers I am excited to announce that Victoria Santore-Tovar has agreed to
submit an article from the Junior Volunteer Program for the
monthly newsletter.
Each month we will meet one of our dedicated Junior Volunteers.
This month it is Victoria Santore-Tovar
Hi! I am Victoria Santore-Tovar
I am 15 years old and a freshman from Highland high school. I am the freshman class president at my school. I play the trombone in the marching band, run cross country and track. I take private piano lessons My favorite class in school is American Sign Language. I would like to continue ASL in college. I enjoy giving back to the community and working with the customers in the gift shop. I really enjoyed this last huddle meeting. It was such a positive experience. We got to listen to the gentleman that started the random acts of kindness. I have continued this on at my school and church. Mercy volunteering allows us youth to have positive experiences and to be uplifted through the organization. My goal is to go to BYU. I have had a 4.0 every semester in high school and I am in gate classes. I want to make a difference in the world and feel volunteering is a big part of that. I look forward to volunteering many more hours in the future and becoming the leader that can continue helping others to believe in themselves. I enjoy befriending those who don't have friends and comforting those who need comfort. Mercy is a great place for me to use these skills and learn more.

April 13, 2016 Board Meeting Highlights
The monthly board meeting was held in the Clerou Room, Mercy Hospital, Truxtun Ave. President Alice Brown called
the meeting to order at 9:36 a.m. The Auxiliary Prayer was said in unison and Vivian Gonzales lead the flag salute.
At this point in the meeting Alice asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of Barbara Bair, Corresponding
Secretary and Chairperson of the Birth Center. Barbara passed away on Friday, April 8, 2016. The service will be held
at St. Francis, Friday, April 15, 2016 with 8:30a.m. rosary and mass following.
ADVISOR: Sister Judy thanked the Auxiliary and the Board for all of their time and dedication.
Sister stated our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara Bair's family and Sister has been in contact with Esther
Lozano, Barbara's aunt. Esther has known the Sisters of Mercy for a very long time. Esther is in her 80's and was
taught by the Sisters of Mercy at Guadalupe School. Esther's mother was in the Auxiliary and Esther introduced
Barbara to the Auxiliary.
We are continuing to be cautious with our spending. California has the lowest Medical reimbursement in the United
States. We have many more Medical patients because many doctors are declining Medical patients. We are receiving a
lot of these folks for healthcare.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: Judy Feldman reports a disaster team has been formed. It is a fourteen member team,
seven Auxilians from Downtown and seven Auxilians from Southwest. A disaster drill was called on Tuesday, April 5th
at 7:15p.m. The scenario was a 6.8 earthquake centered in Maricopa.
Before the next drill, Judy will contact the Disaster team via e-mail regarding details as to the "what and why" of doing
these drills.
At this time, Robin discussed the possibility of the auxiliary being added to the hospital's emergency notification system.
HOURS: JUNIOR: Robin Hunt reports 692.18 hours for 68 Juniors in March.
HOURS: SENIOR: Vania Tate reports 57 Adult Volunteers and 6 Provisional's posted 1772.22 Inside Hours and
1,155.00 Bonus Hours for a total of 2,927.22 hours volunteered in March.
Total hours volunteered from 1955: 2,188,418.5
MEMBERSHIP: Vania Tate reports 4 inactivation's in the month of March. As of March 31, 2016, the Auxiliary had a
total of 75 volunteers, 61 active, 9 provisional's, and 5 members on leave of absence.
PUPPETS: Doris Garrett reported one school had booked the month of March with approximately 200 students. They
cancelled at the last minute and it was too late to get another school scheduled for March. The puppet show is booked
through May and letters of invitation for the 2016-17 school year will be mailed in August.
SCHOLARSHIP: Gail Burch reports the Scholarship committee met on March 16, 2016. The first order of business
was to define the Delores Johnson's Memorial Scholarship.
The March 2015 minutes indicated the monies would be allocated to the BHS Athletic Department in the form of a
scholarship to a deserving student. Contact was made to BHS and the school did not respond. From the non-action of
BHS , the Board voted to deposit the $1,100.00 to the Friends of Mercy Scholarship fund. From last month's
Scholarship Committee meeting, I contacted the Executive Board and it was voted on and approved to bequeath this
donation to a qualifying Junior Volunteer that happens to be a student at BHS. This one time scholarship is given in
memory of Delores Johnson.
A motion was made by Gail Burch to reallocate this one time donation. The motion was seconded and all were in favor.
The committee made their selections and spent $15,500.00 on scholarships. Scholarship awardees have been invited to
the Awards Luncheon on April 14, 2016.
I want to thank the Scholarship Committee: Deanna Barton, Pat Lindsay, Alice Brown, Christine Higgins and Vania
Tate.
UNIFORMS: Gail Burch stated there is no March report.
At this time Robin did report there will be uniform fittings within the next two weeks.
VOLUNTEER SERVICES: Alice introduced Provisional, Kathy Witcher to the Board.
Alice reported four Provisional's for membership, Kathy Witcher, Megan Little, Florence Lee, and Arnie Malin.
Alice Brown made a motion to accept Kathy, Megan, Florence and Arnie into membership. The motion was seconded
and all were in favor. Kathy was presented her purple membership jacket. Congratulations!
Alice reported there were two new applicants who attended orientation in March.
