MENDOORAN ANZAC DAY MARCH
The Mendooran ANZAC March was very well supported and attended
returned service-men and women, people representing ex-service men and
women, school students and staff, Pony Club members and many
community members. The march itself went extremely well and when
everyone reached the Cenotaph the laying of wreaths and books was a
very well orchestrated exercise. The younger children, many of whom
were marching for the first time, were very well behaved and listened
with interest to the proceedings.
At 11am another service was held inside the Memorial Club and those
present were moved by the address. Mr Herb Busine’s brother, Mr Jim
Busine, was Guest Speaker and delivered a very moving and informative
power-point presentation on Changi Prison and the Burma-Thailand
railway. A light lunch was served afterwards courtesy of the RSL Ladies’
Auxillary.
Thank you to those who organised and those who supported this special
day.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTES Thank you to everyone for a very positive start to the term. As I mentioned in last
week’s newsletter, all staff participated in professional learning exercises for two
days, this was all carried out in a very positive and collegial manner, ensuring that
positive benefits will flow on and into the classroom. I was thrilled when I visited
classes once school had started, that everyone is back to working earnestly with a
determination for achieving and cooperation evident throughout the school.
Welcome Miss Quayle
Last week the school welcomed Miss Erin Quayle onto staff for the remainder of the year. Miss Quayle
will be taking over from Mrs Norwood and teaching sport and PE across the Primary and Secondary
school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Student Leadership Program in Sydney
This Wednesday, our school Captain, Amelia Washbrook and Vice Captain Danielle Sciberras will be
attending a leadership program in the NSW Parliament where they will have the opportunity to meet
Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales. This will be a
wonderful experience to extend the leadership capabilities of our student
body and we are very pleased to be able to offer the opportunity.
School Uniform
With the colder weather approaching this is often the time that clothing
other than the school uniform find their way to the school. Our uniform
looked fantastic all of last year and this year and I would hate to see the
standard drop. I ask all students and their families to ensure that only school
uniforms are worn every day to school. A school fully in uniform shows
pride, dedication and teamwork.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Welcome back to school for Term 2. This term we are looking at the topic of change. We will be
investigating how people grow and change over time and how the things around us change. In health we
will look at our bodies, naming the body parts we can see and thinking about the body parts and systems
we can’t see such as the lungs, heart and brain. We will also be investigating insects this term. Learning
about what they are, what types we can find in the school environment and how they grow and change
so there will be lots of science investigations and experiments happening this term.
Kindergarten students are continuing to learn their sounds this term so please send in home readers and
sound books. Year 1 will be participating in spelling activities that build spelling strategies such as
using spelling boxes, making words with spelling dice and building words with letter tiles. Year 1 will
continue to change home readers also so please send them in daily. Daily reading at home helps students
become confident readers and encourages a lifelong love of reading.
Kylie Turnbull will be working with Kindergarten / Year 1 this term on Tuesdays, replacing Rebecca
LaBour. I welcome Mrs Turnbull into our class and looking forward to working with her.
At the end of last term I was sick and missed the Parent Teacher interviews. I would like to apologise
for the cancellation and will reschedule interviews with parents over the next two weeks.

ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM The Active After School Sports program will be running this term on Wednesdays 3.10pm- 4.30pm,
beginning 8th May and finishing on 19th June. Students will be staying at the school during this time.
Parents/Caregivers will need to ensure children are collected from the school at 4.30pm. We look
forward to another term of fun filled games, activities and a healthy afternoon tea.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

Once again I will be able to choose resources based on our school’s needs, across every educational category
possible, including Mathematics and English resources, Science equipment, Arts & Crafts materials, Sports

Our Captain and Vice-Captain, Amelia Washbrook and Danielle Sciberras are meeting the Governor
in Sydney on Wednesday.
Preparations are underway for NAPLAN which will be held next Tuesday 14th May until Thursday
16th May. These examinations give us a snap shot of our students’ literacy and numeracy skills in
Years 7 & 9.

SCIENCE IS AMAZING! Researchers have discovered that a drug used for treating cancer is
showing signs of curing Alzheimer’s Disease in mice and in the
U.S. gold nanoparticles are being developed to destroy Hepatitis C
infection. In our own lab this term we will be looking at the Earth
with Years 7/8 and energy with Years 9/10. It will be all about the
beautiful planet we live on and the energy that surrounds us every
day. It’s only a short term so we will be working hard to learn as
much as we can.
A big shout out to the Year 11 Biology girls who handed in their
first senior assessment last term and the quality of their work was
outstanding. Beautifully researched and excellently presented. I
have great faith that these girls will achieve astonishing things in
the terms to come.
This weeks Incredible Science Fact. The euphoria of being in love
has nothing to do with the heart. The warm, fuzzy feeling when you’re with your loved one is caused
by a chemical produced in the brain called phenylethylamine. Chocolate also contains
phenylethylamine so eating some chocolate creates the same emotions as being in love. No wonder
so much chocolate is sold all over the world!

DIGGING AGRICULTURE The Agriculture students are back for Term 2 and fortunately for us a lot of our plants survived the
holiday break. A big thank you to Steven Leask and Robert Austin for popping in to the plot to check
on things during the break and keeping the poultry alive and kicking, as I am sure Derek Washbrook
would have been devastated if the rooster had suffered as they are great pals.
This term we are going to investigate the effects of fertiliser on our crops as we plant a range of
winter vegie’s. A little rain would be nice but we will work with what we have. Hopefully we will
have buckets of winter goodies growing in no time flat.
On the equipment side if anyone has an old shovel, spade or garden fork in reasonable condition
knocking around the shed not being used, we would love to have it at the agriculture plot to be put to
good use.

A SURPRISE VISIT FROM CHRIS CONDLIFFE Past Principal, Chris Condliffe visited our school at the end of last term. Since he left Mendooran
Central School he has been Principal at Canobolas Rural Technology High School in Orange but has
recently retired from the Department. He thoroughly enjoyed catching up with staff members and
students and was amazed at all the changes that have occurred, particularly the new buildings and the
fence. He was Principal here from 2002 - 2005. We wish him all the best in his retirement.
