Hello Everyone, I would like to take a couple minutes of your time to introduce myself and to explain a few recent changes in the UC office. My name is Greg Giusti (pronounced “Juice-Tea”) and as of July 1, I will be assuming the role of County Director (CD) for the extension programs in both Lake and Mendocino Counties. I’ve been with UC since 1985 , beginning my career as the 4-H/Farm Advisor in Del Norte County. I have been in Lake and Mendocino areas since 1989 , serving as the Forest and Wildlands Advisor. I was the CD in Mendocino County from 2003-2006, and have been the CD in Lake County since that time. The change in administration is consistent with the desire of the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (of which 4-H is part of) to reduce the number of people addressing administration and giving others more time to focus on programming. Similarly, as I think you all know, Dorina Espinoza was appointed as the North Coast Academic Advisor with an em- phasis on Youth, Families and Communities. This four county assignment (Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte) is a new direction for the 4-H program, driven entirely by the reduction in State support and the need to try and meet local needs in a timely matter. Dorina has a very difficult assignment and I am committed to helping her succeed as we both learn how to meet people’s needs and expectations. Given my past experiences I am very familiar with the 4-H program and support and appreciate the work of its staff, volunteers and members. I want to thank all of the families, project leaders, community club leaders and everyone who sup- ports the 4-H program for your tireless efforts in organizing meetings, driving kids to events, feeding animals, and every- thing else you do. Please fell free to contact me in the Ukiah office if you have any questions or topics you wish to share with me. Long Valley 4-H Club Submitted by Garrett Campbell

At our short June meeting we were pumped up for summer! It was our last official General Meeting. We honored the middle and high school graduates, and I was among them, with some elaborate applause and little goodies.

Our heads were filled with various events happening over the summer, including our last "meeting", a potluck, at Lions Park on June 26th and 6:30. Don't forget to bring sloppy copies and fair entry forms! Overall, the meeting was simple and precise, kind of a nice way to end the year.

Have a splenderific summer, everyone!

Happy Summer Everyone! Boy is it ever hot these last few weeks. Our 4-H Group has been very busy bees. We've got all the critters weighed in for Fair. We're looking forward to doing our stall decorations this year. Aloha Days is going to be so much fun.

Baseball is over for most of us and we are concentrating on our 4-H Projects. Scrapbooking is putting together their albums to be judged for fair. They're really good and I feel sorry for the judges this year because it's pretty steep competition.

Pigs are growing fast and looking good. My brother Tate and I have really been working our pigs this year. We are putting a ton of effort into our projects. The Swine Group is looking forward to the Swine Showmanship on June 23rd. Hope to see some of you there. It's really a great way to learn about clipping, showing, health care & supplements. It's the time to get your questions answered.

The dog obedience & training project is really doing awesome this year. We'll be seeing a few new dogs this year. I personally just got a new puppy to start training for next year. My Doberman isn't doing so well this year & even though I've worked hard I may be unable to show him at the fair this year.

I have graduated from 8th Grade this year as the Salutatorian. I have to give credit to all the great opportunities that I've had through 4-H. It has made me a responsible, hard worker that I will only approve on. Being the Reporter and giving a report every month during the community meetings really helped me deliver my speech clearly. Make sure to take advantage of every opportunity available to you. I'd like to give a special thank you to my leaders for everything they do for me.

On Monday the 11th of June 2012, the Mendocino 4-H Spartans met for their last club meeting for the 2011-2012 year. In this meeting, 4-Hers were encouraged to bring a friend who may be looking to join 4-H. After the meeting was called to order, we had our introduction, and then we went over last month’s meeting and business. Then a special guest named Amanda came. Amanda talked about how 4-H, especially the dog care class, helped her get to where she is today in her career working with dogs. After the visit, we went over more business. When the meeting was done, all of the 4-Hers and the visitors were welcomed to eat some delicious ice cream. For more information about the Mendocino 4-H Spartans, contact WendyLee Beak at [email protected].

Scholarsh ips ! Reminders for Buyers Luncheon at REF

Centerpieces Each 4-H club and FFA chapter are asked to create two centerpieces (more if they would

like) for the Buyers Luncheon. They are to reflect the fair theme of Aloha from the

Redwood Empire Fair. If flowers are used, please make them real flowers.

Buyers Luncheon Etiquette

Members are not to solicit buyers during the buyers luncheon. The luncheon is for buyers (past and present) to enjoy themselves and visit with one another. It is not a place for

members to ask guests to buy their animals.

Tips for Sending Letters to Potential Buyers Adapted from Humboldt County 4-H and Ohio State University (Clark County 4-H)

Selecting the right animal, raising it skillfully and getting it ready for the fair are the key essentials for a successful animal project. Another factor equally important is mastery of the business side of the animal auction.

All 4-H market project members have the responsibility to help invite buyers to the 4-H Livestock Auction. Sending personal invitations to buyers inviting them to the auction is a skill that will benefit you long after the auction is over. The request for a buyer needs to be made in an appropriate manner. Consider the following tips when writing letters to potential buyers:

Things You should Include in your Letters

Information about yourself

Information about your project and club

Fair dates

Sale date, times and location

How they can participate as a buyer Where they can obtain more information

Thank them if they have participated before and if they were a buyer from a previous year

Things You Shouldn’t Include in Your Letter:

Asking the person to buy just your animal Asking for a donation or sponsorship—the

auction is not for charity Imply that your family will only continue to

do business with them if they buy your animal.

Asking for a certain price or bid Statements related to personal hardships or

finances

Letter Etiquette

Send your letter out at least two weeks before the fair begins. Hand write neatly or use a computer to compose your letter. For more helpful hints, go to the Fair section on our website:

http://cemendocino.ucdavis.edu/4-H_Program/Mendocino_County_Fairs/

1. Thou shalt not feed, train, and care for the

animal, for thou art trying to teach the child

responsibility.

2. Thou salt forgive a child for making mistakes in

the show ring, for thou hath made mistakes too.

3. Thou shalt not get mad when they child forgets

items in the show box, for one day thou may forget

the show box.

4. Thou shalt help the show management for they

are doing a job that thou would not want to do.

5. Thou shalt see that thy child is on time for all

show activities for thou would not want to wait on

another.

6. Thou shalt be sure that thy child has the animals

entered and the registration papers in order by

the designated time.

7. Thou shalt teach the child that winning a blue

ribbon is a desirable goal, but making friends

along the way a more worthy goal.

8. Thou shalt not complain about the judge for it is

their opinion that has been sought.

9. Thou should remember that livestock projects are

teaching projects, not necessarily money-making

projects.

10.Thou shalt remember that the livestock project is

a family project that shall be enjoyed and

supported by the entire family.

Ten Commandments for Parents of Youth

Showing Livestock Courtesy of Clyde Lane, Jr.

Extension Specialist, University of Tennessee

During competition be aware that you are representing yourself, your leader, your family and your 4-H Club.

Remember that the rules for competition are written to keep them fair. Read and understand the rules, and ask questions if you need clarification. Thank your leader and the judge for helping you learn, and keep your experience positive no matter what the results.

Be courteous to spectators, parents, fellow 4-H members and judges.

Be helpful and pitch in when there is a need. An extra hand is always appreciated.

Parents can help their children practice ahead of time, and then watch them do their best without making distracting comments from outside the ring. Let your children earn their awards by themselves. Cheer on their efforts, and be proud of whatever results they achieve.

Enjoy the fair and all the wonderful experiences it holds. It is a magical time!

The Mendocino County 4-H Council is looking for new officers for the 2012 /2013 4-H year. The County 4-

H council is responsible for assisting the 4-H Youth Development Program and the University of California

Cooperative extension in the development and support of the program’s yearly events and activities.

This is a great opportunity for members to become involved and enhance the future of the Mendocino

County Youth Development Program . The Council will be holding elections for the office of President,

Vice President and two adult Members-At-Large. In addition, we are looking to fill the vacant offices of 4

youth Members-At-Large. If you are interested in serving as a Mendocino County 4-H Council member,

please contact the Mendocino 4-H office at 463-4495 or [email protected]. Elections will be held dur-

ing the July council meeting .

Announcing the New Highest California 4-H Youth Award!

The Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the launch of the California 4-H Diamond Clover Award. The Diamond Clover is awarded to the highest achieving 4-H youth members through an application and essay process. All youth who achieve the qualifications are eligible for this award. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year and while a young person is between 17 and 19 years of age. Each quarter, applications are reviewed by the Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee and awards are given. Awardees are announced annually at the State Leadership Conference. Applications are available now for submission beginning July 1, 2012 at http://www.ca4h.org/Administration/Advisory_Committees/IR/

Rationale: Most youth serving organizations have a highest honor—Boy Scouts have Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts have the Gold Award, Camp Fire USA has the WoHeLo Award. While the 4-H State Ambassador Program is a very high honor, it is a working honor and is prohibitive to many who may be deserving of a highest youth award.
