Why should we as educators care about leadership?

“Leadership is communicating people’s worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves.” Is that not

also the essence of good teaching?

A Framework for Understanding Leadership

Mission- based Leadership: Inspires dedication to a cause

What is the importance of Mission-based leadership?

"Leaders Share Purpose, Vision and Values - If you study the people who participate in dynamic leadership relationships,

you will find that the majority of them never set out to be great leaders. Rather, they set out to pursue a purpose, a

cause, or a calling that was worthy of giving it everything they had - in some cases, even their lives! Their power is the power of purpose. Whether it's chasing an exciting new opportunity or fighting an injustice, their belief in the cause gives them

the strength to persevere when they come up against seemingly insurmountable odds. In their efforts to build relationships and rally people around the cause, they are

engaging in the act of leadership."

Success Factors at the School Level

“ You will hear us compliment the children all the time. You will hear us thank them. We tell them we love them every single day, and how much we appreciate them. We have nine hundred students and it is important to us that we connect with each of them every day…That is part of our core value system here. We let children know we

believe in them.” Muriel Summers, Principal, A.B. Combs Elementary School

[Taken from the book, The Leader in Me, Stephen R. Covey, 2008]

Belief in the value and potential of each child and of each educator Commitment to the development of character and life skills Alignment of school vision, mission, values, and strategies Communication of school commitment to leadership principles Modeling “the right choices”

The Ripple Effect

Your behavior influences others through a ripple effect.

A ripple effect works because everyone influences everyone else.

Powerful people are powerful influences. If your life works, you influence your family,

If your family works, your family influences the community.

If your community works, your community influences the nation.

If your nation works, your nation influences the world.

If your world works, the ripple effect spreads throughout the cosmos.

Remember that your influence begins with you and ripples outward.

So be sure that your influence is both potent and wholesome.

John Heider, The Tao of Leadership
