Men Die, Spirit never dies
Carry Forward the Behest of Bhagat Singh
Call of 23rd
march the Martyrs day of Bhagat singh
In the cross current of Indian Freedom movememtn, even amongst the greatest of
the revolutionary heroes who ridiculed death on the gallows, stood apart,
towering above the horizon in distinction, Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh. His
boundless courage and devotion to the cause, his precocity of understanding of
the revolutionary processes in the background of the history and then ongoing
political movement, his audacious attempt to reorient the whole of the freedom
movemement towards a qualitatively new goal, his unique exemplary struggle inthe minor and major problems of personal life; everything made him a
revolutionary of outstanding brilliance.
A leading Marxist thinker of this era, Comrade Shibdas Ghosh, analysing the
onward march of Indian freedom struggle , pointed out to us that the freedom
movement, from the very beginning, was divided into two distinctly different
trends Viz., the compromising and uncompromising trend. Bhagat Singh,
according to him, showed the most remarkable conceptional advancement in the
process of evolution of that trend during his time. He emphasised, time and again
on the study and cultivation of this uncompromising trend in general and of
Bhagat Singh in particular, to understand the great qualities of his character and
apply them in our life. On the occasion of the 23rd
march, the day of martyrdom of
Bhagat Singh, we recall certain aspects and incidents of his life which are most
illuming for the present generations of students when almost the whole
politics(the power politics) has degenerated really to the level of profession of
scoundrels.
The Early Influences

Born to a family of revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, right from his childhood
became closely associated with freedom movememnt. Of his two uncles, Ajith
Singh was sentenced to lifelong deportation and swarn singh died of inhuman
torture in police custody. The martyrdom of the hero of Ghadr uprising, Kartar
Singh; the story of brutal jalianwallabagh massacre, the impact of his patriotic
father, Kishen Singh, kindled the fire of struggle and self-sacrifice in his early
boyhood. It was a time when the Indian revolutionary politics had been
undergoing a critical period. M any heroes had already laid down their lives in the
course of uncompromising freedom struggle. Attempts of insurrection had been
foiled and ruthlessly crushed down by the British Henchmen. The question was
already haunting many people, whether, inspite of all the sacrifice, dedication,
devotion and courage of the indomitable revolutionaries, the conspiratorial form
of struggle could ever defeat the so powerful British Empire. Mean while two very
important evnts occurred. First , is the Soviet Revolution in 1917 , Which shook
the whole world literally. It strognly boosted the revolutionary activities all over
the world and particualrly in the colonies and semi-colonies. As an impact of
those new ideas and concepts, the concepts of Marxism-Leninism and the dream
to put an end to all sorts of exploitation of man by man, started to claim the
attention of many individuals and the various revolutionary polity of our country.
The second important event was the rise of Gandhiji in Indian National Congressand the beginning of the age ofAhimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha as the
dominant trend in freedom movememnt. In this backdrop, Bhagat Singh entered
the arena.
A Revolutionary In Making
In his student life he was drawn to the vortex of freedom struggle. He,
along with some of his compatriots formed the Naujawan Bharat Sabha in punjab
and started to organise the students and youth of punjab to fight the British in arevolutionary way, distincly different from tha path of non-violence, negotiations
and compromise. Mean while, Anushila Samity, a major militant group in Bengal
took the initiative to organise revolutionary activities all over India, thus formed
the Hindustan Republican Association(HRA) in 1923 to bring the splinter groups
scattered all over the country under the aegis of a single organisation. Bhagat

Singh came in contact with the HRA by the middle of twenties, with his close
comrade-in-arms and devoted themselves to escalate its activities through out
punjab and other provinces in northern India. It is noteworthy that the great
patriotic hero of the Chgittagong uprising, Masterda Surya Sen and his group
were close associates of this HRA. During this period Bhagat Singh was getting
more and more involved in organising and recruiting revolutionary workers,
while, at the same time was devoting himself extensively to the studies of political
literatures, especially those of Marx and Lenin. Bhagat Singh and his fellow
comrades would resd the books, made notes, held discussions and debates and
thus gradually reshaped their old ideas in the light of these new conceptions. This
intense ideological struggle led him to the conclusion that mere removal of
Britshers from the country would in no way solve the basic problems of peoples
life but the chief objective of the forthcoming revolution would be to
permanently put an end to all sorts of social discriminations and exploitations and
to establish the hegemony of the working class.
