Welcome back. I hope theholiday season was a happyone for all, and I sure hopeall members and their fami-lies came through it safely.You deserved your Union-negotiated break; now it’stime for all of us to to go to work. WhenI say get back to work, I’m talking aboutworking on coming together, sending astrong message of solidarity, unity, andstrength that will lead us to victory byhaving the membership overwhelminglyratify the contract with Boeing.

We have always taken the high road,and will continue to do so. We havealways done the right things for the rightreasons, and this year we will do justthat. It is right to protect jobs. It is rightto protect and increase pensions, and it isright to control health care costs incurred

by our members and theirfamilies. It is also right thatpast and future retirees getgood benefits.

2002 is in the past – wewon’t forget what happened,but we are negotiating forour future. Let’s get to work.

You should have receivedand filled out your health

care surveys by now. They will be im-portant when our bargaining committeesprepare the contract proposal. In March,the Union Stewards will disperse andcollect the full contract survey. We needyour input as our negotiations will openin late June. We have a big year ahead ofus with the Boeing negotiations, but wewill get through it successfully, together.

Airbus has been in the news a lotlately – some good, some bad.

Our members in Local 86 in Spokanewon the contract to build the floor panelsfor the new Airbus A380 freighter. Con-

gratulations to our members who provedthey can build the best products for anyaircraft, and to the company officials –especially Triumph Composite SystemsPresident Mary Lou Thomas – a formerIAM member , who negotiated the dealwith Airbus. It is truly remarkable whena company goes out looking for workthat not only keeps them profitable, butmore importantly, keeps us employed.What a concept.

On the other hand, we are solidlybehind the Boeing 767 Tanker program.The Airbus announcement to open aU.S. factory to build the proposed Air-bus tanker is a blatant attempt to under-mine Boeing’s and Machinists Union’sefforts to land the contract. Although theethics problems at Boeing have hurt ourefforts, we will continue to work closelywith Congress this year to secure thedeal on behalf of our members who buildthe best aircraft for the job – the Boeing767.

Finally, longtime IAM Business Rep-resentative Jerry Shreve, who worked atBoeing for many years prior to full timeUnion office, is retiring effective Febru-ary 2, 2005. Jerry has helped thousandsof workers and their families during hiscareer, and his work ethic has not goneunnoticed. Besides providing leadershipto Local 751E, (Jerry was past presidentof Local E) he worked with and trainedhundreds of Union Stewards who workedwith Jerry and together they made adifference. Jerry has also been an enthu-siastic organizer and has helped manynon-union workers secure the dream of anegotiated contract with mandated healthcare, wages, pensions, and work rules.Jerry, enjoy a long and happy retirement,you earned it and our appreciation.

Social SecurityIt is disconcerting to hear politicians

talk about “reforming” or “saving” So-cial Security in deliberately vague andconfusing terms and not being straight-forward about their real aims. It strainscredulity to think that 60 or 70 year oldpoliticians really care about what hap-pens to the Social Security system 50years from now. Their concern has to bedealing with the program, especially itsassets – now.

If the goal was simply to abolish So-cial Security on ideological grounds,political debate to scrap the system couldbe basic enough – end the deductionsand matching payments, and borrowenough money to phase out the benefi-ciaries over some years. We might see asmall one-time economic “bounce” asyounger people take home and spend alittle more money, this would phase outas older retirees receive less. Theeconomy would continue on its presentborrow and spend basis, except that se-nior citizens would not have the finan-cial security and peace of mind they nowhave.

However, this is not what the BushAdministration or its advisors have inmind. Their hopes focus on the contin-ued enforced collection of monies, andin fact, depend on it. Monies would stillbe deducted from wages and presumedlymatched by employers. Rather than be-ing directly sent to retirees on a NON-PROFIT basis to guarantee their pur-chasing power, the funds would be chan-neled to financial “advisors,” brokers,“get rich quick” assisters – who havecontributed massive financial aid to theelection campaigns and put their friendsin positions of enough political power(they hope) to make this massive payoff.There is a lot of money at stake. There isan entire industry anxious to run thesefunds through their fingers, charging fees,service charges – commissions. And thisis only the somewhat reputable people.Many others would simply steal the funds

entrusted to them, which the unwaryinvestors would only learn when it’s toolate.

One has only to read the financialpages or the crime reports to see theplethora of scams and phony investmentschemes either being offered and pro-moted, or in various stages of investiga-tion, indictment, and/or prosecution – allwith people’s retirement funds.

The politicians who are eager to dothe bidding of this “investment” indus-try are, frankly, not people of integrity.Many of these political office holders,especially at the Congressional level,could never have achieved in private lifethe salary, expense account, or prestige.As candidates, they got their positionsby accepting the financial contributionsneeded to buy favorable publicity – es-pecially “killer” television ads. The sadfact is that absent financial contributionsof a magnitude to buy an equal share ofTV commercials, more people friendlycandidates will fail to be elected.

The Pacific Northwest Labor HistoryAssociation, RiseUp! Productions andthe Seattle Labor Chorus have teamedup to present an exciting celebration ofworkers’ culture.

On February 18-20, 2005, A Festivalof Workers’ Culture will be held at theSeattle Labor Temple. This festival oflabor music, art, poetry and theater willhighlight the 100th anniversary of theIndustrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Three general sessions will exploresuch issues as free speech, the culture ofitinerant workers, and the use of culturein organizing — historically in relationto the IWW, as well as in the context ofthe present day labor movement.

The festival will bring performersand presenters together with other inter-ested trade unionists and friends of laborto not just exchange songs, stories and

ideas, but to devise ways of integratingthis culture into the life of workers andtheir unions.

A participatory feature that will runthroughout the festival is the “Arts Ex-change,” during which time festival at-tendees can sign up to “be on stage” forfive minutes to perform a song, recite apoem, tell a story, etc. A number ofinteresting workshops will also be pre-sented, on such topics as The Use ofVideo in Organizing, Racism and Labor,The Soldier as Worker, and LibraryWorkers as Cultural Workers.

The Saturday evening session willfeature a presentation of “Hold The Fort,”written and performed by singer andsongwriter John O’Connor. It is a narra-tive of IWW history in the Pacific North-west, interspersed with Wobbly songs as

POLITICAL ACTION

As the 2005 Legislative Sessionopened in Olympia, District 751 went towork on a variety of issues.

District 751 continues to work onUnemployment Insurance and Workers’Compensation – with the goal of protect-ing the interests of our members.

This session, the Union is again work-ing on health care in a number of differ-ent ways. Governor Christine Gregoirehas also made it a priority and hit theground running by launching a packageof executive-request health care legisla-tion. She also issued an Executive Orderdirecting DSHS to return to 12-montheligibility review cycles, a move thatwill keep more than 19,000 childrenfrom losing health care coverage.Gregoire’s legislative proposals include:

• Allowing private employers to pur-chase health insurance through state-administered programs;

• Seeking a federal waiver to autho-rize the state to license Canadian pre-scription drug wholesalers, which would

allow the reimportation of cheaper medi-cines;

• Creating a prescription drug-pur-chasing consortium that expands the ex-isting evidence-based prescription drugprogram and its preferred drug list; and

• Creating a long-term care task forceto develop recommendations on publicand private mechanisms for financinglong-term care, particularly in rural com-munities.

The Union supports each of thesemeasures and congratulates Gregoire onher immediate leadership on this impor-tant issue.

Even more must be done. Large em-ployers should not be allowed to aban-don their employees and pass on enor-mous costs to taxpayers and the entirehealth care system. It’s not fair that busi-nesses that do the right thing (such asBoeing, GKN and Triumph) and provideaffordable health benefits must competewith such employers. Investing in em-ployee health should be a requirement

for large busi-nesses inWashington,whether thatcoverage isp r o v i d e dthrough theemployer orthrough a feepaid by thelarge em-ployer to thestate.

District 751joins business,commun i t yand social ser-vice interests ina Fair ShareCoalition thatis supporting

legislation called the Health Care Respon-sibility Act. This would require large em-ployers who fail to provide affordable healthcare benefits to pay a fee to the state tocreate slots in the Basic Health Plan (BHP)for their employees.

The Union also supports a HealthCare Disclosure Act. This legislationwould allow taxpayers to determinewhich employers are shifting the cost ofemployee health care coverage to thestate. It requires the state to collect anddisclose the employers of applicants forpublicly funded health care programslike Medicaid and the BHP, as well asthe employers of any person receivinguncompensated care in a hospital.

The Union is also working on jobcreation for the state through a variety ofavenues. Last year a bill was passeddesigned to bring back manufacturingjobs to Washington State. We are cur-rently looking for ways to implementthis and determine how to attract manu-

Health Care, Jobs and UI Still Issues in Olympia

On January 11, U.S. Trade Represen-tative Robert B. Zoellick announced theU.S. and the European Union (EU) hadreached agreement on the terms of nego-tiation to end large commercial aircraftsubsidies. The goal will be to try toeliminate different types of subsidies andto establish fair, market-based competi-tion between the two aircraft manufac-turers.

This was a step in the right direction tolevel the playing field against Airbus –something the Union has been pushingfor years.

“For the first time in this long-stand-ing dispute, the U.S. and the EU haveagreed that the goal should be to endsubsidies,” stated Zoellick. ““We agreedthat our negotiations should be concludedwithin three months. During these nego-tiations, each side will refrain from tak-ing additional steps in the WTO processand from committing to any new govern-ment supports for large commercial air-craft.”

Boeing President and Chief Execu-tive Officer Harry Stonecipher called theagreement an important step “to estab-lish much-needed balance in the com-mercial aircraft market.”

“Boeing is encouraged by the goodfaith displayed by both governments, asevidenced by their understanding not to

provide additional development and pro-duction support and to refrain from pur-suing WTO litigation during the timethey are negotiating,” added Stonecipher.“Boeing will continue to support andwork with the U.S. government duringthe negotiations, and looks forward tothe conclusion of a meaningful agree-ment to end subsidies.”

U.S. Senator Patty Murray said sheand other lawmakers would monitor thetalks to make sure any final agreement“truly levels the playing field for ourcommercial aircraft industry and work-ers. That is the only acceptable outcomefor this most important process.”

Murray and other members of Con-gress have long complained that Airbusreceived billions in cash advances thathave enabled it to pursue virtually risk-free product development.

“Finally, through our direct action,the Europeans have acknowledged theneed to come to the table to account forand defend Airbus’ unfair trade prac-tices,” Murray added.

Representative Jay Inslee said thenegotiations are likely to “break Airbus’addiction to European launch aid subsi-dies” that caused “harm to our domesticwork force.”

This will obviously continue to be anissue the Union follows very closely.

Airbus Ploy Renews Push for 767

unions to try and limit or restrict theoutsourcing of state jobs.

No specific bill numbers were as-signed to our issues yet, but we will keepmembers informed when action is re-quired on legislation.

In January, EADS, the majority ownerof Airbus, held a high-profile press confer-ence to kick off the search for a U.S. site tobuild aerial refueling tankers for the AirForce. In response, the Washington Con-gressional delegation renewed its push forthe Boeing 767 to be the only plane for theAir Force Refueling Tanker.

Congressman Norm Dicks, who haspushed hard for Boeing to receive thecontract, denounced the move, stating,“The United States government has a dutyto protect our industrial base. This is a caseof Airbus trying to get it all. It’s a lot ofchutzpah to think they can get the U.S.government and the Pentagon to fund 100percent of their planes.”

planes made in Europe and then merelymodify them for U.S. military use here.

Workers on the 767 were appalled atthe thought of U.S. defense planes, paid forwith U.S. tax dollars potentially being builtby a foreign company.

Toni Young, who works on the 767line, stated, “It prompted me to call myState Senator. Airbus can do whateverthey want, but it is unconscionable for ourgovernment to even consider a foreigncompany to provide defense planes whenour whole economic system is dependenton our industries. If our governmentchooses to just look at the bottom line –especially when there is no competitionbecause Airbus is subsidized, it is veryshort sighted. Every Boeing job creates anumber of other jobs in America - thatmultiplier effect should not be forgotten.”

Ryan Stott, lead mechanic on 767/747for the past 19 years, said, “Airbus is nota U.S. built plane - it is foreign competi-tion. Our government requires that AirForce One be built in America. The sameshould hold true for other defense planes.Why would we even consider releasingour government defense requirements? Itis an insult to even consider spending mytax dollars with Airbus. When we get intowar situation, you never know who ourenemy might be. We can’t be dependent onother countries for our defense planes. Italso brings up the whole tax burden issueand the mounting deficit.”

Winter means, among other things, the days areshort and darkness descends early. Combinedwith the usual amount of clouds and rain, drivingvisibility is severely affected.

For those of us who work within the gates of theBoeing plants, we need to be mindful of the dan-gers of seasonal darkness, weather, other vehiclesand pedestrians. Each of our plants, from Everettto Fredrickson has seen changes due to asset utili-zation and consolidations of buildings. There hasalso been a marked increase in vendor vehicletraffic as a result of the new material delivery andpoint of use process. This has caused modifica-tions in both vehicle and pedestrian traffic pat-terns.

At the Renton plant, the “Move to the Lake” hasdrastically changed the physical makeup of theplant. Before these changes, Renton could havebeen described as a “Los Angeles” model. Inother words, the population of the plant was spreadout over a larger geographical area. Now, with theconsolidation, closures of buildings and relocationof support people into the final assembly and wingmanufacturing buildings, the plant resembles the“New York” model. That means a greater popula-tion density built up but not out. It also meansmore people and vehicles in closer proximity.

When you learn these techniques and USE them inyour daily life, you use the right muscle groups forstrength. Your body doesn’t have to work as hard, so atthe end of the day you are less fatigued. Also when youuse the right muscles you are less likely to be injuredbecause you have more control. It’s really about ourquality of life, not only at work but at play!

HSI Administrator Dave Brueher, who has taughtthe class for many years, noted, “If I had my way thiswould be taught in school, so it would be second naturefor our children to use the techniques in allthings. MoveSmart also has benefits for our elderly aswell. Everyone should learn the techniques and incor-porate them into their life.

It’s about quality of life – by using the proper musclegroups and maximizing strength you can do more withless strain. Sounds good? It should because it works!When you go through this training it proves that itworks.

Members Learn to Move Smarter

Members Get Moving to Reduce StrainsAs the average age of our member-

ship increases so does the risk of inju-ries from strains and sprains. To re-duce some of these injuries, many shopshave begun daily exercise/stretch pro-grams to warm up the muscles andwake up the bodies.

In Renton, the average age of theforklift drivers is 51-1/2. In late October,they began a daily stretching/exerciseprogram to cut down on strains andsprains and promote better health.

What prompted the new program?While at the National Safety Confer-ence, Bill Scott, the drivers’ Safety Moni-tor and Supervisor Dennis Fenton at-tended a class on the aging workforce,which reported the average U.S. factoryworker is 47.3 years of age. They knewBoeing’s workforce was even a bit older.When they returned from the confer-ence, they met with Tina Herrman ofBoeing Health and Fitness Center, whoset up a program with three different setsof stretches/exercises.

Bill noted, “These employees are

one of the most at-risk groups due tothe fact that they spend much of theirtime in the driver’s seat. When theyhave to get off to move a load, they areat risk for stiff and tight muscles. Theprogram will hopefully prevent futuresoft tissue injuries. We hope to transi-tion this into a self-paced program driv-ers can do throughout the day whenthey need to. The goal is to have fewerincidents or strains.”

Member Rick Kocor regularly takespart in the exercises and noted, “Exer-cise is an essential part of a healthylifestyle. Why not incorporate it into ourwork day?”

The forklift drivers have seen results.751-member John Liedke has lived witha bad back and neck pain so he wasn’texcited about the exercise program. Sincehe began with the stretching, the pain inhis lower back has been noticeably less.Many workers have commented theirpain has lessened because it has strength-ened their muscles. The Renton Facili-ties Group has asked to establish a simi-lar exercise program.

In the Everett wire shop, music blairseach morning at 7:30 a.m. as employeesgo through an aerobic routine that com-bines stretching and cardio combina-tions. The music helps motivate employ-ees and has enticed workers from otherareas to join in the program.

Steward Connie Dang is encouragedby the turnout. She noted, “The musicmakes a difference. It took a while tomotivate people to stretch. Originally,the exercise program began in the wireshop in Renton before it moved to Everett.We added the music and are gettingmore people involved. We even havepeople from other shops joining us. Wehave been asked to train other people inthe IRC to lead the program in other

shops.”“We have a lot of fun. It

promotes good camraderie andmotivation besides healthy ex-ercise and stretching,” addedConnie.

Employees working for DynCorp atFort Lewis are excited to have Unionrepresentation and a first contract. Infact, 100 percent of the workforce rati-fied the contract 751 negotiated, whichis a testament to their level of satisfac-tion.

A laid-off Boeing employee contactedthe Union about possible representation.After meeting with the employees, theIAM was proud to be their collectivebargaining agent.

The first contract delivered employ-ees a 20.5 percent increase in wages overthe three-year agreement, including a14.3 percent general wage increase at theratification. Their sick leave accrual ratedoubled, vacation days were increased,bereavement leave and jury duty lan-guage was expanded. The first contractalso introduced report time, call-backtime and on-call pay. Before this firstcontract, there was only a 401K plan.Now DynCorp members also securedthe IAM National Pension Plan, withcontributions of $.80 an hour by the endof the three years

Bill Johnson, the member who ini-tially contacted the IAM, noted, “We are

Bill had been amember of the IAMwhen he worked at Boeing and contactedthe Union for representation after a prob-lem with his pay for working as a lead man.When he brought it to the company’s atten-tion, DynCorp agreed he should have beenmaking an additional $1.50 rather than the96 cents he was receiving; however, theyrefused to consider paying backpay. Thenext call he made was to the IAM forrepresentation.

These satisfied Union members havebeen spreading the word around FortLewis that it pays to be Union and gowith the IAM. The IAM also recentlyratified first contracts for DynCorp em-ployees in Idaho, Oregon and Montana.

The four District Officers and 14 Business Representatives elected during the October Local Lodgeelections accept the oath of office at the January 25th District Council meeting. They began a four-year term of office effective February 1, 2005.

Ped-man, for example, is now the graphicdepiction you see in walkways.

It is important that when we arepedestrians we use these walkways.It is also important when we aredrivers that we are aware of thewalkways and even pedestrians whostray from the walkways. Let’s allslow down in the plant, making surewe all get home safely. Let’s re-mind each other of the need to driveand walk safely while at work. Withall the new vendor vehicle trafficand the increased employee trafficthere has never been a greater po-tential for vehicles and people com-ing together with tragic results. Bytaking just a little more time andpaying a little more attention, wecan make sure we all are safer.

tion was done right – thus keeping the 7E7 manufactur-ing process on schedule.

Boeing showed off the 7E7 fuselage section to mediaat a press conference on January 11 – just one weekbefore Airbus rolled out its A-380 super jumbo. Whilethe A380 will use more composites than previous planes,it will not use nearly as much composites as the 7E7. Infact, Airbus had doubted an all-composite fuselagecould be made.

Walt Gillette, Boeing Vice President of Engineer-ing, Manufacturing, and Partner Alignment, hailed thefuselage section as “a piece of aviation history.”

“Nothing like this is already in production,” declaredGillette. “We now see how all advanced airplanes willbe built from this time forward.”

It is the innovation and skills of our members andBoeing engineers that have made past models success-

ful. The samewill be truefor the 7E7.For months,members atDC havew o r k e dh a n d - i n -hand withBoeing engi-

neers and other 7E7 partners building prototype partsfor the 7E7. Members are also involved in developingproduction processes so these parts can be mass pro-duced most efficiently – all with the goal of making the7E7 a best-selling airplane.

Our members at D.C. are excited for the opportunityto work with composites and have a role in the 7E7.Composites are a huge leap forward in the aerospaceindustry – weighing about 20 percent less than alumi-num. In addition, composites won’t corrode or fatiguelike metal does, which means less maintenance forairlines.

This barrel fuselage section was built in December,after several months of development work. Building thepiece, which included stringers, started with computer-ized lay-down of composite tape on a huge mold. Thatmold was mounted on a tool that rotated the barrel as thetape was applied. The structure was then wrapped andplaced in Boeing’s autoclave for curing. The final stepwas unwrapping, inspection and tool removal. Next,windows and doors were cut out and a paint process wastested.

Seven more 7E7 development pieces, representingdifferent sections of the plane, will be built at theDevelopmental Center this year. In addition, 751 mem-bers working in the wind tunnel have also played a rolein the 7E7, where they have been performing variousperformance tests for nearly a year and a half.

Since both companies are in the aerospace industry, it helps ourmembers at Boeing if we can bring up their wages and benefits.

751 Steward Gus Gustaveson, who worked at Goodrich beforegetting hired at Boeing, noted, “These workers need a Union so theirpay scale and benefits are fair and employees are treated equally. Twopeople doing the same job may make $3 or $4 an hour different. In adownturn, they don’t hesitate to layoff workers and it doesn’t have tobe based on seniority. They also don’t have any safety guidelines.”

legacy in January. In Seattle, the celebration began at Garfield HighSchool with a series of workshops, a rally with speeches fromvarious organizations and a march through downtown Seattle onMonday, January 17. Everett held its celebration on Thursday,January 13 with a march that ended at the Everett Event Center anda program that included Governor Christine Gregoire.

The Northwest Harvest warehouse project has be-come an annual event with many members bringingtheir entire family. Volunteers bagged 8,280 pounds offrozen corn on the cob, which will serve 20,700 people.

In addition, volunteers repackaged 5,500 pounds of ricefrom 18 pound bags into 2 pound bags, which willprovide 33,000 servings.

751 members and their families also prepared andserved meals at both the Everett Gospel Mission andTacoma Rescue Mission. Several teenage students tookpart to earn their community service requirements forschool.

Students have begun volunteering through the Union tofulfill their community service requirements.

How many people would open their homesand hearts to kids at the drop of a hat? 751-member John Mason and his wife Cheryl havedone just that for over 18 years.

When 751-member John Mason and hiswife Cheryl agreed to be foster parents forChildhaven, little did they know how it wouldchange their lives. This amazing couple havenot only served as foster parents for between160 and 300 kids, but adopted seven childrenalong the way – in addition to raising their twobiological children.

Helping others – especially kids – is just away of life at the Mason home. It has earnedthem the respect of many. Debra Ronnholm,President and Chief Executive Officer ofChildhaven, gets choked up talking about theMasons. “Their entire world revolves aroundtheir kids They are unsung heroes, and I feelhonored to know them. I wish the world hadmore people like John and Cheryl. Our formerclients look up to them and want to emulatetheir parenting abilities.”

John noted, “I love being a foster parentand making a difference in the kids’ lives andin the community. I have seen so manychanges in children who have come throughour house. We don’t have a lot of money, butwe have kids. I was one of five children andgrew up in a big family so it just camenaturally.”

Some of the foster kids stay for months andothers stay for a day. Each situation is differentand each child has a unique set of needs.Childhaven has inspired the Mason family toreach out to others. In fact, their two oldestchildren Jennie (age 26) and Jeremy (age 24)went to work for Childhaven after completingdegrees in education.

So how did they go from being fosterparents to adopting seven kids? It was the rightthing to do seems to be the answer.

“I can’t imagine what our lives would havebeen like if we hadn’t adopted these childrenand only had the two who were born to us,”stated Cheryl. “We fell in love with Danny,who was one of the first children we received,and decided we wanted to keep him. He was 16months old when he came to visit and is now asenior in high school. Danny’s biologicalparents continued having children until theirdeath, so one-by-one we adopted all six ofthem. We felt it was important to keep thechildren together. When we would hear theyhad another child in the foster care system, wewould track them down so they could be withtheir brothers and sisters.”

John noted, “Our kids gave up a lot to adoptthe others, but they got a lot in return, which iswhy they decided to work at Childhaven. Theywant to continue to give back and help others.It is a way of life in our house.”

Yet all the Mason kids share who sentiment.When they hear a new foster kid is coming,they still get excited. The entire Mason clangreets a new foster child and attempt togenuinely make them feel welcome andcomfortable.

“There was never a kid that didn’t do wellbeing in the Mason home. It is amazing andspeaks volumes to the love they show,” addedRonnholm.

The giving extends beyond just their home.John, Cheryl and the entire family have beenactive in Childhaven and participated in arecent fundraising drive that collected $15million for this worthwhile organization.During the 1995 strike, John volunteered nearlyevery day at the Seattle Union Hall, helping outwhere he could and doing whatever needed tobe done. It is something that directs his life.

One thing is sure – life is never dull at theMason home, but it is always full of love andchildren.

Helping others is a way of life for 751-member DaveBrueher. While he has long been active in the Union,taking part in various community services projects, serv-ing as a Union Counselor, volunteering as an ECF boosterand countless other ways, he carries that philosophy intohis home.Dave was recently named Riverside Neighbor ofthe Year by his neighbors and community for alwayshaving a kind word, a friendly greeting or a helping handfor others. At least once a week, when Dave mows hisyard, he also mows his neighbor’s yard – without beingasked. He did this because his neighbor works long hoursin Seattle and is caring for her elderly mother. That is justthe kind of neighbor he is. For years, neighbors haveknown they can always come to Dave to get a hand andignore his “Beware of Biker” sign on the front door.

When asked to make a comment, Dave replied, “Onething we can give each other is love and a helping hand.”

On February 1st, District 751 bid fare-well to its senior Business Rep - JerryShreve, as he retired from the Union.Jerry has served continually as a Busi-ness Representative for the past 24 years,but hisUnion Ser-vice goesmuch fartherback.

Overthe years,Jerry has helped countless members toenforce the contract, resolve their issues,negotiate contracts and make it a betterplace to live and work. As BusinessRepresentative, he has been assigned tothe Everett, Auburn and Seattle offices –covering a wide variety of buildings andassignments. His commitment to theUnion and bettering the quality of life forothers was evident in all his work. Jerry hired into Boeing in June 1955and worked for over 25 years as anElectronic and Mechanical Inspector.From the start, he was active in his Union- serving 18 years as a Steward, 8 yearson the District Council, and 4 years asthe District Vice President. He alsoplayed a critical role in the Local Eleadership - serving as Local E Presidentfor 4 years, Local E Recording Secretaryfor 7 years and Local E Sentinel for 3years.

Remembering Roman Year After YearAt the Grand Lodge Convention this

past fall, delegates took action to namea scholarship after one of 751’s mostbeloved members – Roman Mayfield.Throughout his 54+ years of service,Roman inspired many to get involved inthe Union, encouraged countless indi-viduals to pursue educational opportuni-ties and counseled many on their careerpaths.

At the final District Council meetingof 2004, Roman’s widow, Albertha, whois also a retired 751 member, was pre-sented a commemorative plaque for theRoman Mayfield Scholarship. Begin-ning with the 2006 IAM Scholarship(since 2005 applications were alreadybeing accepted before the Conventionaction), one recipient will be named theRoman Mayfield Memorial Scholarship.The yearly scholarship is a fitting way topay tribute to this member that playedsuch a rich role in our history.

Local A Raises Thousands to Help Members

751 continues to play a role in area communitycolleges with another member getting named as Trustee.Effective October 14, 2004, 751-Member Roy Wilkinsonwas appointed by Governor Gary Locke to serve asTrustee of Cascadia Community College.

Wilkinson has been very involved in promotingeducation for years in his position as Union Program

Coordinator at the IAM/Boeing Quality ThroughTraining Program (QTTP).

The trustee position willgive him a more active rolein one of the many schoolsour members utilize throughQTTP. Since becoming atrustee, Wilkinson has al-ready attended three boardmeetings, one legislativemeeting and a retreat.

Trustees are responsiblefor hiring and firing the presi-dent of the college. They also

vote on whether the professors receive tenure and nego-tiate contracts for unionized workers at the college.

Cascadia Community College is currently in theprocess of becoming accredited. Cascadia shares itscampus with the UW Bothell branch with a libaray thatis jointly shared. It offers many IT programs and biotechprograms to support the industries in the surroundingarea. Cascadia also offers many remedial classes suchas Accounting 101 and classes to help balance a checkbook.

Wilkinson is excited to play a role in this developingcollege.

accumulation in Social Security Funds, finds the cam-paign funds to support and elect politicians who willfacilitate their plans. And those politicians, owing theirelection to those interests do their bidding, which is toprovide access to the Social Security funds.

Faced with this, those who seek to preserve theSocial Security system, which is NOT BROKE, face adifficult task.

An ongoing campaign to preserve Social Securitymust state clearly to the fullest extent of whatever mediaaccess we still have, first of all, the actual purposes andfunctioning of the Social Security system. Then such acampaign must expose and directly challenge the spe-cial interests that seek to divert the funds to theirpersonal benefit. There cannot be too much publicattention given to the ongoing record of fraud, misman-

agement and corruption by precisely those interests thatwould manage so-called private retirement accounts.

We can take encouragement from the fact that thecampaign to establish Social Security in the first placedid succeed over the objections of the same intereststhat now seek its ending. The combination of publicsupport, pro-people political leadership, and impartialconsideration of Social Security on its merits, combinedto establish this sustaining cornerstone of Americanprinciples and ideals. With work, we can keep andsustain Social Security so that it will be there for ourchildren and grandchildren.

Ivins noted the Republi-cans do not want to fix SocialSecurity, they want to kill it.They don’t want to ‘partiallyprivatize’ Social Security, theywant to end it. IAM members working at Alaska Air-lines have asked for our help. AlaskaAirlines is threatening to outsource nearly500 baggage and ramp service agentjobs unless they take massive pay andbenefit cuts, as well as work rule changesthat put their full-time careers in jeop-ardy. They have threatened to subcon-tract these jobs at the end of January.

IAM negotiators have made conces-sion offers to try to help Alaska, but itseems to be a moving target. Initially,Alaska wanted $13.8 million in conces-sions from the ramp employees. WhenIAM negotiators offered $11 million inconcessions, Alaska then demanded $18million in concessions.

And they’re not just small conces-sions either. Alaska is asking these IAMmembers to move their maximum payrates from $20.80 an hour down to $13an hour. In addition, Alaska wants toincrease employee contributions forhealth care.

751 members joined IAM membersfrom Alaska on an information picket in

late December – trying to bring publicattention to the situation.

Alaska Airlines is considered thehometown airline, which many of ourmembers fly when taking their vaca-tions. Use your power as a consumer andwrite a letter asking them to do the rightthing and keep their unionized rampworkers.

A few facts you might want to men-tion in a letter or e-mail:

• On November 17, 2004, with all the“losses“ the Company has taken, AlaskaAirlines issued over 46,000 shares ofstock worth more than $1.5 million toupper management AT NO COST.

YET• Alaska Airlines has “asked,” with

the threat of outsourcing, that the Unionemployees take large cuts in pay andbenefits.

• Currently at Alaska Airlines, thereare approximately 9,000 Union employ-ees in contract negotiations covering pi-lots, flight attendants, ramp serviceagents, stores agents, and customer ser-vice agents.

• Alaska has laid-off hundreds ofmechanics and closed a main mainte-nance base.

• They have outsourced the planecleaners’ job to an outside firm that doesnot provide the quality service the formerAlaska employees did.

• Claims of “losses” are exaggerated

in order to dupe the public into acceptingreduced service and dirty planes as thenorm.

• It no longer matters to Alaska Air-lines Management if their employees aresatisfied with their jobs. This has led tothe lowest morale in over 20 years.

Alaska Airlines Trying to Make IAM Jobs Excess Baggage

IAM members working at Triumph Composite Sys-tems in Spokane received good news in early January– Airbus awarded them a contract to design and manu-facture the floor panels system for the A-380 Freighteraircraft. The announcement boosted morale as employ-ees felt an increased sense of job security.

Since Boeing sold the plant two years ago, there hasbeen continuous talk about getting additional contractsand expanding their work package so they are notcompletely dependent on Boeing. This Airbus con-tract, which could be in excess of $35 million forTriumph over the life of the A380 Freighter, is a goodfirst step. It gives Triumph Spokane sole ownership ofthe floor panels, as long as the A380F is in production,

in addition toproviding in-service sup-port.

MemberLinda Louie was very excited. “This is a very good thingand was a long time coming. We have pretty much justbeen a Boeing supplier with a few little contracts. Ourfuture was uncertain without a big contract that wouldensure work for the future. I’m excited because it prettymuch guarantees I will be working here for at least a fewmore years. In my mind, this helps with our nextcontract because this is work that must be built. It opensthe door for us to be an Airbus supplier, which is huge.”

Jack Bean saw it as a new opportunity. He noted,“The Airbus contract is great news – not only will it helpsupply continuous employment opportunities in Spo-kane, but it will give us leverage in negotiating a newcontract in two years. Hopefully, we can regain some ofthe concessions we had to give to guarantee the sale ofthe plant to Triumph.”

Members are pleased to be working on a new air-plane, a new model and to be a part of it for the future.
