RepresentationThere can be many different types of stereotypes especially in media production. It isimportant for all media producers and people who are involved in media life everydayto have an opinion in society and individuals; this opinion can be based on astereotype from personal experience or from what you may have been told, seen orheard. Generally in film production companies people tend to focus on a particularstereotypes when presenting a character as this is what people expect to see, i.e.most Chinese people are into kung-fu and karate, they are all very smart and eatnoodles on a regular basis. This would be a typical regional stereotype (there aremany types of stereotypes). However in some cases, there would be countertypes. This is when a character behaves against a stereotype or is presented in that way.

An example of this might be that you find a Chinese person isnt very smart, doesnt

have any fighting skills whatsoever and doesnt enjoy eating Chinese food.

In the horror genre however, there are particular stereotypes you would generallyexpect to find a vulnerable female victim who is in constant need of protection. Thischaracter would usually be played by a blond, attractive woman as this would appealto a large male audience, however this character would typically be annoyinglystupid. Although, this would help to create suspense and their actions, behaviour andreactions can put the audience on edge.

The stereotype of the protagonist within the movie would generally be a strong and

very masculine male character. Being the hero you would expect that the he wouldsave the day and end up with the girl he loves because of this but horror movies theconcept can sometimes be that the hero is a hero due to his bravery and courage tochase or go after to kill the antagonist, thus sacrificing himself to save the girl heloves and other characters. This character may show little emotion till the very end or

just before he disappears. On the other hand, movies nowadays would make afemale character play this role instead as an attempt to portray equality, this hasbecome very common in recent horror movies.

A commonly found stereotype with the antagonist of the movie could take manydifferent forms i.e. a demonic possession (supernatural creature), serial killer or evena monster (zombie, vampire, werewolf, etc.). If the character is human then theywould probably have their face covered completely so that the identity is completelyunknown to the audience and victims in the movie. These characters are usuallyoblivious to bullet wounds or stabs, which creates the idea that they are inhumaneand unbeatable which keeps the audience interested in how the movie might end.

Alternatively, if the character is not human it would still create suspense asthroughout the movie the audience would generally be wondering whether thischaracter is real or not.

In our film production we will have a young, vulnerable, innocent and pretty girl, and
