COMMUNALLY PRIVATE MEGHAN HALE | JAIME SANZ | DESIGNING SPACES OF INHABITATION
My design for the Columbia Heights Apartments began with the investigation of pod-like living through my horizontal and vertical designs, as well as the different scales of living and proportions associated with designing housing. Taking the idea of creating com-munally private spaces within housing, I primarily focus on the connection between individual units of housing within a neighborhood. The seperating enforces my central idea of lessening the stark transition between busier spaces and the privateness of an apartment.

I began this exercise by researching the dimensions of a small houseboat and looking for example images and diagrams of boats that embody the minimum space a person needs to live. The boat I decided to diagram is a small motor powered house-boat that supports 2 people. The compact interior reflects the need for utilizing every space of the boat. I realized that so much time and thinking goes into the design of these minimum space occupancies because it is necessary to find the best pos-sible way to support all the necessities an individual may have.

My stairs serve as a gateway down the side of a canyon. They are made of wood with steel cables as railings. I chose these materials in particular as to not distract from the natural land-scape of the canyon. The railings are only located on the out-er edges because the canyon wall acts as a barrier on the in-terior sides. My stairs create views of different parts of the canyon that would not otherwise be able to be seen. Each plat-form as well as all the stairs offer a view of the canyon below.
