3 Key Ideas for Parents About the…

Thinking Deeply - Critical Thinking – Analyze, Discuss, Evaluate Justify and Explain

• Thinking deeply is hard – let it be hard, help by talking it out.

Integrating Learning - Reading, Math, Social Studies combined into one task – students work together

• Problems and Solutions happen everyday in the real world

Example: Eduardo had 3 shells. After his family went to the beach, he had 12 shells. How many shells did Eduardo find at the beach.

Showing How They Know

• Proof and evidence - explain thought process -

• Clarifies vocabulary

• Allows speaker to hear and clarify his/her thoughts

• Allows others to hear different solutions and compare to the their own

• Informs teacher about student’s understanding.

Supporting the Common Core at Home

1. Ask why when children tell you they want something or want to do or not to do something.

2. Give reasons – you to them and them to you3. Compare how things are alike and different – videos, movies,

food, make connections to your own life and to their past experiences.

4. Encourage and celebrate opinions. 5. Read to your child and take turns reading 6. Talk about what your child is reading. 7. Encourage your child to write – shopping list, thank you cards,

letters to a friend, make their own book about something they want to remember.

8. Practice math facts – will help to learn new skills with ease. 9. Help develop sense time sense - “What time will it be in ____

min.?” or “It takes you 15 min. to walk to school. What time will we have to leave? How much time do you have to get ready?”

10.Practice counting money and making change. 11.Every moment is a learning moment – Watch a program

together, take a trip, cook together and talk about everything!!!
