Did You Know?

In early libraries, books were organized by size and color.

Only the librarian knew where to find a book on the shelf.

At most libraries, you would need to ask the librarian for a specific book so she could get it for you. You were not allowed to try and find it yourself!

Nobody gets books

without asking me

first!

Then came Melvil Dewey!

Melvil Dewey was a librarian! He was born in 1851 He decided to invent a system to

organize books so that anyone could find them.

His system would help libraries put information into 10 categories.

The Dewey Decimal System Works!

Now that books are arranged by topic or category they are easier to find!

If you want a book about cars, they will all be in the same place!

If you want a book about dogs, they will all be together on the shelf too!

Now it’s your turn to teach!

We will be breaking into groups

Each group will make a Power Point presentation about one of the Dewey Decimal System Categories

You will present your presentation to the class.
