The Holy Quran Chapter 69: The Reality

■ A Heartwarming Hospital Visit

■ I have been Imam for four years at the Oth-man Bin Affan Mosque in Jeddah. I am honored to be the local Imam of Alfaisal University; however, it is not an easy responsibility. I finished memorizing the whole holy Quran by the age of sixteen and I have been involved in teaching in my mosque in Jed-dah. All praise to Almighty Allah for having this wonder-ful mosque with such a unique design and beautiful stature. I advise all the students, faculty and staff to attend and pray with us on time, seeing that this mosque is built for you. Myself and my colleague, medical student Malik Nassan, will Insha’Allah do our best to make this mosque more active for the students. Therefore, please keep in contact with me and help further my duties and responsibilities as Imam via feedback by seeing me in person or emailing me on [email protected]. ■

■ The First Imam at Alfaisal University

■ On the first of February 2009, fifteen students from the college went on a trip to the Kingdom Hospital in order to visit Gaza inpatients. Our brothers and sisters from Palestine ranged from ages 4 to 20 and all were happy to see young stu-dents interacting with them. May Allah bless them all. Arranged by medical student Abdullah Alshammari, the visit lasted about two hours. Further, gifts and toys from the stu-dents were given to every child patient. Their beautiful smiles were more than enough to express their happiness, and power-ful enough to spread amongst all of us. Dr. Mahir M. Abuzubida, Emergency Room Chairman at the Kingdom Hospital, was kind enough to take us students on a tour and on-rounds with him while visiting the patients. We highly appreciate all his efforts and professional attitude. Truly, the visit helped us personally and academically within a healthcare setting. Going on rounds with Dr. Abuzubida, we felt the privilege we will soon undergo in our medical careers. We got a better idea on the pattern and approach towards pa-tients in terms of both verbal and body language. The hands-on experience that we received offered more than just the training and assignments we currently receive at medical school. Rather, we grew on a personal level and developed even greater social and communicative skills. ■

■ Alfaisal Leadership: Professor Hassan Rajab

■ May you please mention a bit about your background? ■ I received my graduate and post-graduate education at three

major U.S. Universities. Biostatistics graduate education was at

Texas A&M University, Department of Statistics, College Sta-

tion, Texas; Epidemiology post graduate education at Johns

Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, and Tufts University,

School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. My public Com-

munity Health graduate education was at Texas A&M School of

Rural Public health. The only school of RURAL public health

in the U.S., this school was established a few years ago and I

had the pleasure of being one of its founders.

■ Why Alfaisal University? ■ Mainly because of the following wonderful principle of KFF…

“A well educated population….is the foundation for a strong

nation”.

■ What do you expect from the medical students? What are the major long-term benefits of this course? ■ I expect from the Alfaisal first year medical students nothing but the BEST! They are our future medical leaders and I am honored to be a part of their exciting journey. To answer the second part of your question I am respon-sible for two courses, Biostatistics /Epidemiology and Commu-nity Health. As you well know, the various disciplines that can provide knowledge about human health can be grouped into three major categories, all are highly interrelated; basic sciences, clinical sciences, and public/community health. My area of ex-pertise is in the public/community health which can be divided into epidemiology, biostatistics, and health services. The long-term benefits of the courses that I teach in-

clude providing students with some of the most important skills

they will gain during this year. These skills will help them,

among other things, better understand journal articles, and give

them the ability to design and execute research projects.

■ Do you have any advice for medical students on how to ap-proach Biostatistics? ■ Enjoy it! Have fun with it. You will know what I mean when

you start using these exceptional skills.

■ Are your tests easy? ■ YES! But, only to a wonderful group of bright students.

■ What would you like to say at the end of this interview? ■ I would like to thank you for giving me this unique chance to introduce myself, and also thank Alfaisal University and the Col-lege of Medicine leadership for inviting me to join the COM fac-ulty. I am honored and excited to be a member of Alfaisal COM faculty and I know that I will work very hard to meet the stu-dents’ and leadership’s expectations. Finally, I lived most of my life in Texas and would like to share some of the Texasn’ Cowboy Sayin’ with you all; “ Hay cowboy… If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to

do is STOP diggin’…”

“Never ask a barber if he thinks you need a haircut..”

“Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that

comes from bad judgement…”

■ It was as if we were fated to meet. As if fate was in control the entire time, watching, waiting for the right moment to spring upon us its ironic ways of teaching us life’s lessons; be it god’s will. It was as if the awkwardness of the worlds stared at us, pouring

down all the fabric of its wellbe-ing and making our scenario as cracked and broken as possible, seeping dryness on all, seizing color from within.

It was as if the quick reactions to counter such a higher power were effortless, turning into black, black coal to fuel the fires of fate, exposing my true self and its black, black emptiness. It was as if disappointment whispered its cruel judgmental words to her, with silence and anonymity to others, with loud roaring demeaning meanings to me through her expressions. It was as if the very breaths I took poisoned her outer flesh, slowly but surely, guiding her to her demise, provoking her to her leave. It was as if the “how do you do”s and rapid exaggerated smiles were beaten, unable to faze or crack that pillar of ice, that pillar of cold awkwardness, that pillar of bold fate. It was as if her leave was the sweetest guarantee she would

ever get in her life, containing the joy she thought not but to

wave her shy hands in glee, masking her eagerness, masking

our awkwardly drowned scenario, and masking my humanity

from its sensations, leaving me to the ironic, cold, black, bold

fate to dumb me down. ■

■ PBL Presentation Finale ■ I would say our professors had, and still have, high expecta-tions of us. But after this event, I believe we even surpassed theirs. On Feb 10 and 11 of 2009, us medical students had a two day problem based learning (PBL) presentation regarding what we had learnt during the semester . Students, faculty, the Dean, Dr. Khaled AlKattan, and the PHMI guest faculty were all present to witness the first ever PBL finale. Worth 5% of our first semester final grade, the presentation was required to be completed within 6 minutes, followed by a 4 minute timeframe for the audience to ask questions. Further, students had to work in pairs and adhere to their subject at hand together to cover medical subjects we took throughout our curriculum. The presentations were very much student centered and allowed us to express the fruits of our labor. Not only were we able to portray our capability and comprehension of the material, rather, we also showed early leadership and better communication skills. Thus, I am pleased to inform you all that as the first medical batch, we rocked. Don’t take my word for it, here is what Dr. Dowton had to say: “Many thanks - it was great to get to spend time with the students at Alfaisal. We commend you all for your hard work. My colleagues and I enjoyed very much hearing the presentations. Well done!!” For the future, lets take it to the next level. ■

■ Every night, when I reformulate my

thoughts, explore my dreams, and surf in

my imagination, I think about why people

in Palestine risk their lives getting in daily

combats using rocks against tanks, the rea-

sons that motivate them to use their bodies

as shields, the basis of their unbreakable

courage, the motive that lies behind their

constant sacrifice and the source of their

irresistible spirit ; it is all because they fight

for their existence, for their land, for their

relatives and friends whom have been killed

violently, for every single tear each Palestin-

ian's mom had dropped over her son’s

body, for all the children whom were

threatened each night, for every single tree

that was removed, for every Palestinian

flag that is being burnt, for each home that

had been destroyed, for the continuation

of peace; and after all of this, Palestinians

are blamed for defending their identity;

they are blamed because they want to live

and exist peacefully; they are blamed be-

cause they respect humanity and religions;

humanity, glory, peace, existence, and iden-

tity had been always standing behind the

motive finding its way through their souls

and bodies, it had been always the words

■"Al-Wasatiah" or the "mid-way" Club between excess and deficiency is the first club of

its kind to run in Saudi Arabia. The club has unique, new and core visions to pass throughout

the campus society. Our goals are to show the real picture of Islam, educate people by new

and creative methods, have fun and get out of the studying environment as well as uphold

the Alfaisal name. Our activities involve Qur'an circles, lectures and programs, competitions,

acting, trips and visits, participating in charitable and humanitarian institutions, and exhibi-

tions. Founded by medical student Abdullah AlShimmary, the dude with the green shirt in

the picture, Al-Wasatiah club accepts anyone from the Alfaisal family! Student, faculty, or

staff! whether within the College of Medicine or not. As such, anyone can become a member

and participate in all events.

■ The Most Incredible Trial

■ Instrument of Perfection ■You are in a room and I bring you a collection of 20 surgical tools, some of them are from hospitals today and some are from hospitals 1000 years ago and I ask you to separate the old from the new: do you think that would be an easy task? I think the first thing would come to your mind is: ‘that’s easy, I will take out the crude, unsophisticated and butcher’s knives, and these would be the old tools ’. However, read on before you decide. If you look back to 10th century in southern Spain (al-undalus), you would find a cutting-edge surgeon called

Abul Qasim Khalaf ibn Al-Zahrawi, a man known in the west as Abulcasis. You would find he already has

written his medical encyclopedia al-Tasrif. Included in al-Tasrif was a chapter called On Surgery, which intro-

duced around 200 surgical instrument invented by Al-Zahrawi. He was the first man to change the science

from being speculative to experimental by introducing the revolutionary idea of using surgical instruments.

His encyclopedia al-Tasrif was considered to be the first documentation in the history to illustrate surgical

tools. These tools were so accurate in design, that they have had only few changes over the last millennium.

As an example of what I told you above, here’s a quotation from his book al-Tasrif describing the treatment

for urethral stone using an instrument called al-mish’ab (the drill) for crushing the stone:

Take a steel rod with a triangular sharp end and tie a thread proximal to the stone lest it slips back. Intro-duce it gently till it reaches the stone, turn it around to perforate it…urine comes out immediately, press on the stone from outside and crush it by your finger, it breaks and comes out with urine. If you do not suc-ceed then do cutting. Now, could you do the task I told you earlier?! ■

the agreement and

their answer was

positive: that the

leader Kutaiba had

not respected the

armistice.

After a long argu-

ment between

both sides, the judge made his final judg-

ment. He asked all the Muslims who

came with the army to leave the city,

their businesses in it and for some

their Samarkand’s wife and children.

This decision was unbelievable. Samar-

kand’s people could not believe their

eyes to see the Islamic army leaving

without any force. By the way, after

this incredible trial, a more incredible

thing happened: most of Samarkand’s

people become Muslims; because they

realized that such justice could not be

applied except by the people who follow

a just religion.■

■ What happened in this story is

stranger than imagination. Moreover,

the reader may not believe that the events

did happen. Anyway, it is a real story that

did occur. Ten men from Samarkand, a

city in Uzbekistan, in the 8th century,

were traveling to Damascus, the capital of

the Islamic empire that covered the quar-

ter of the world at that time.

They were aiming to meet the Ca-

liph Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz to tell

him about the unjust occupation of

their land by the general Kutiba Ibn

Muslim AL-bahili. After a very long

an exhausting trip, they finally ar-

rived at Damascus and asked to

meet the Caliph.

Indeed, they were not sure whether

they would be welcomed or not. In

any event, they succeeded and were al-

lowed to meet the Caliph. One of them

went ahead with confidence and courage

to tell the Caliph that the Muslim occupa-

tion of his land was injustice. Because

there was an armistice between them and

the leader Kutiba but the latter didn’t

respect it. Instead, he attacked them sur-

prisingly and occupied their land. After a

long silence in the royal palace , they

heard what they had not expected. The

caliph ordered his judge in Samarkand to

call for a trial between Samarkand’s peo-

ple and the Victorious army of Muslims.

After they had arrived home, they gave

the message from the caliph to his judge

in Samarkand and then the trial began.

The judge started by asking Samarkand’s

people about their case. Then, he asked

the remnants if the Islamic army about

February 11, 2009 From Illinois - According to research in Public Library of Science One, drinking soda may increase the risk of kidney damage in women. In a study of over 9,300 people, researchers found that women who drank at least two regular soft drinks each day had a 40% increased risk of albuminuria - a marker for kidney disease. These results were not found among men or those who drank diet sodas.

February 20, 2009 From Los Angeles - According to research in the journal Stroke, drinking tea could reduce stroke risk. In a meta-analysis of 9 stud-ies involving nearly 195,000 people, researchers found that those who drank at least 3 cups of black or green tea every day were 21% less likely to have a stroke than those who consumed less than a cup per day. This suggests an effect that is similar in magnitude to exercise

February 9, 2009 From Seattle - According to a study in the journal Cancer, smoking marijuana may increase the risk of testicular cancer. In a study of over 1,300 men, researchers found that, compared to those who had never smoked marijuana, current users had a 70% increased risk of testicular cancer. Name: Ahmed Magdi Abu-Zaid Date of Birth: November 29th, 1989 Nationality: Sudanese Email: [email protected] ■ Why did you choose medicine at Alfaisal University? ■ I chose medicine because from my childhood I had a plan profoundly embedded in my heart to treat sick human beings, and hence, drawing a smile on their faces. Another reason is that a medical career in itself is humanitarian and

exhilarative in nature. That is to say, a medical career aims to make sick people feel the happiness of being healthy, which is of great importance. ■ Why did you choose Alfaisal University? ■ Because I believe that Alfaisal has the elevated educational standards that make a clear-cut distinction between it and other universities. I am pleased and delighted by the trustworthiness of the Board of Trustees, expert administration staff, the high-standard faculty, the distinctive well-developed curriculum, the modern facilities, and most importantly, the affiliation with Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI). ■ What are your talents, hobbies, and activities that you enjoy doing in your free time? ■ Graphic designing, drawing, weight lifting, volley ball, swimming, video games, reading short stories and observing cadaveric dissections! Also, I like watching TV, especially scientific programs and European Soccer Leagues. In addition, I like hang-ing out with friends whenever possible. ■ What’s your favorite sport, book, movie, and place to visit? ■ My favorite sport is volley ball. My favorite book is the Holy Qur’an. My favorite movie is “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”. My favorite place to visit is Makah and Al-Maddinah. ■ Which specialty in medicine do you tend to favor? ■ I’m looking forward to becoming a neurologist. ■ What would you like to say at the end of this interview? You’re voice. ■ I’d like to thank Mohammed Khusheim, and all the hidden heroes behind the great success of this delightful Med Times newsletter.
