Medomak Valley High School Senior Final Exam

Final Exams (From the MVHS Student Handbook) Midterm and final assessments are administered in January and June to ALL students. Notes: A. No exams will be given early except for students participating in school-sanctioned events (Boys’ & Girls’ State, military commitment, National Youth Leadership, & All State delegates, or with administrative approval). Arrangements can be made during the make-up period, during the summer before the cut off date, and with administrative approval upon return in the fall. B. Failure to take (or make arrangements to take) a required exam will result in the exam being averaged as a zero. C. If a student misses a required final without prior arrangement, he/she must provide evidence that it was an excused absence. A “Permission to Make Up a Missed Exam” form is available from the attendance office with administrative approval. A student with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to take the missed exam and will receive a zero for that exam. SPRING IS HERE!

Of course as much as we look forward to leaving winter behind, there IS spring house cleaning! The nurses of RSU 40 would like to encourage you to remember to clean out your medicine cabinet. This includes medications that are outdated or discontinued, whether they are prescription or over the counter products. Sunscreen has an expiration date and also needs to be replaced in order to be effective. Bug repellent should be replaced each year as well. Medications are not safe to be discarded in landfills, but rather should be disposed of by dropping them off at either the Waldoboro Police Department, Route 1 in Waldoboro or the Knox County Sherriff’s Department, located at 327 Park Street in Rockland. If your student has medications kept at school, please make arrangements to pick them up prior to the end of the school year. A parent must pick them up, as we cannot send them home with a student. Just one more step in keeping our families

safe!

Kids who eat healthy, drink enough water, and sleep well at night will have more energy for all their sports and activities!

Give Your Body Water When You Need More Fuel!

When you exercise, you sweat, and when you sweat, you LOSE water and minerals

Energy drinks should never be used to replace water during exercise.

Energy drinks and many sports drinks contain HIGH amounts of sugar and calories.

“ In a game, when my players get thirsty, water gets the call.”

Stay hydrated!

It’s cool.

Maine Immunization Program Tel. (207) 287-3746 Fax (207) 287-8127

F A Q : Tdap (T etanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) School Immunization Requirement

What is the new Tdap requirement? All students entering, advancing, or transferring into seventh (7th) grade will need proof of the Tdap booster immunization before entry into school starting this coming August, the 2017-18 school year. This requirement applies to 7th grade students ONLY; grades 8-12 are NOT included in this rule change.

Why was the Tdap requirement added? The new immunization requirement is intended to reduce the spread of pertussis in Maine. In recent years Maine has seen a dramatic increase in the number of cases of pertussis, also know as whooping cough, throughout the state. Prior to entering kindergarten, most children are fully protected against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis after receiving the DTaP vaccine in early childhood. However, immunity to these diseases wears off, leaving adolescents vulnerable once again. A booster dose of Tdap during adolescence helps to protect students and their close contacts, including young infants for whom pertussis is most severe.

Who is affected by the Tdap requirement? All public and private schools with enrolled 7th grade students are affected by the law.

What exemptions are available under Maine law? Maine law describes three exemptions for student immunization requirements. Schools should maintain an up-to-date list of students with exemptions so those students can be excluded quickly if an outbreak occurs.

o Medical exemptions: Physicians may grant in writing an exemption for students for whom immunizations are not medically indicated.

o Religious: You may request an exemption for children from immunization requirements if the immunization is contrary to your religious beliefs. The parent or guardian requesting an exemption needs to provide the school with a signed note stating the objection. Religious exemptions must be renewed annually.

o Philosophical exemptions: You may request an exemption for children from immunization requirements if the immunization is contrary to your personal beliefs. The parent or guardian requesting an exemption needs to provide the school with a signed note stating the objection. Philosophical exemptions must be renewed annually.

When should children get vaccinated with Tdap? Now. Avoid the rush and make sure your children can start school on time. Parents are encouraged to make an appointment for their incoming 7th grader to get a Tdap booster shot now. Children as young as 10 years old are recommended to get vaccinated with Tdap. This will protect them against the ongoing threat of pertussis and will meet the Tdap school requirement for when they are in 7th shot. Children will need proof of immunization in order to start school.
