Many medical device companies are struggling to regain their footing in the new healthcare landscape as they face unprecedented margin pressures from insurers and providers. And the shift toward coordinated care and improved patient outcomes also has the healthcare industry examining new care models.

In this volatile business environment, even the smallest product development misstep can have costly ramifications.

Our CapabilitiesBoston Engineering understands the complexitiesand challenges facing medical device companiesacross therapeutic areas. We are a productinnovation firm with the expertise to drive the entireproduct development process including: • Concept development• Industrial design• Risk analysis• Engineering• Supply chain development

We also jumpstart stalled projects and work closely with a company’s product development team.

Our services combine innovative thinking withthe experienced technical and regulatory insightsrequired for client success from the surgical suiteto emerging models of patient care.

Boston Engineering’s expertise in secure wirelessconnectivity is also pivotal to supporting thegrowing demand for remote patient care anddevice integration with e-healthcare and big datainitiatives.

Boston Engineering’s ISO 13485 certificationunderscores our quality management system formedical device product design and developmentconsulting services.

The Boston Engineering AdvantageOur phase-gate process addresses the interdependencies of all product developmentrequirements. This includes measuring the impactthat a seemingly minor design change has onproduction cost, performance, and regulatoryimplications.

Benefits include:

• Accelerate New Product Development: Our innovation process translates groundbreaking ideas into successful products. Boston Engineering’s cohesive product development teams specialize in bridging the gap between ideation and engineering.

• Mitigate Risk: Extensive research and feasibility analysis early in the innovation process eliminates problems later in the development cycle. Boston Engineering’s added scrutiny and analysis up front mitigates expensive manufacturing changes, ensures regulatory compliance, and prevents launch delays.

• Cut Costs: We identify opportunities to reduce production costs throughout the product development process. For current products, we address the supply chain and regulatory issues associated with obsolescence to extend the product lifecycle and trim costs.

The ‘iPhone of Infusion Pumps’ Set to Reduce Medical Errors

Medical device executives selected Boston Engineering to transform their infusion pump idea into a working prototype that verifies the correct patient medication and administers the accurate dosage automatically.

Boston Engineering developed a productthat features wireless connectivity totransmit data from the patient bedside toa central care management location, anda touch screen interface to provide easynavigation and to minimize potential usererror.

Boston Engineering created a functioningprototype within four months. We also created and maintained DHF document- ation to fulfill FDA submissionrequirements.

The device is moving through the FDA approval process, and company execu-tives are confident that the product will play an important role in saving lives and enhancing care quality.
