T he year long awaited Media Meet 2012 commenced on Au- gust 24th at the Christ Univer- sity auditorium with a theme “Let’s Network-emerging new media” that is hard to miss the eye. A diverse panel of dignitaries gracing the event included Vice Chancellor Col. Fr Thomas C Mathew, Dean of Social Sci- ences and Humanities department Prof. John Joseph Kennedy, Intel Strategic Manager Mr. Sunil Acharya and the HOD of the Media Studies de- partment Prof. Naresh Rao. The inau- guration began with the lighting of the lamp by the esteemed dignitaries after which they took their place amongst the audience to watch the rest of cere- mony. A welcome dance for this grand occasion was performed by the stu- dents of first and second year MS in Communication. Prof. Naresh Rao then delivered the welcome address highlighting the significance of new media and providing a brief on the various events that is in store for us over the next two days. Also the newly conferred title of ‘Colonel’ to Fr. Thomas C Mathew was celebrated who then shared his experience about the interdisciplinary prospects of building networks, the Indian Net- working systems, knowledge of which is instrumental in bringing societal changes. Sponsor representative from Intel, Sunil Achariya who has been as- sociated with the company for 20 years and curretly designated as their Strategic Manager highlighted the op- portunities that Intel has been provid- ing the student community for decades. “Intel connects to more than 50,000 students and 300 colleges every year” stated Mr. Achariya. Further Prof. Kennedy, while appreciating the vibrancy and dynamism of the media studies department also reminded us about the dangers associated with so- cial media and its wise usage. The arrival of the Chief Guest Mr. Suhas Gopinath was welcomed by the Core Commiee member, Amogh Ravindra. Mr. Gopinath has been hon- ored as the world’s youngest certified professional web developer through his project “coolhindustan.com” at the age 14. He is also the chairperson and C.E.O of Globals Inc, a multinational IT consulting company focusing on Web e-commerce and web mobile so- lutions. His experience on how he started off his career from a humble beginning and scaled the height of success was a source of inspiration to all. Mr. Sunil Achariya and Chief Guest Mr.Suhas Gopinath’s presence was acknowledged with mementos. To kick start the events of Media Meet2012, the Paper Presentations wereheld at the main auditorium of ChristUniversity. Going by the theme of thisyear's Media Meet, the participantspresented their papers on the variousfacets of New Media. The programmecommenced with the Keynote speakerDr. Fr. Kurian Thomas, engaging theaudience with some enlighteningwords on the reason why people areincreasingly being drawn to SocialNetworking. His views on social net-working being used by individuals to

create a 'Social hyper reality' of them-selves was quite insightful.

The nine participants, which in-cluded faculty and students of themedia department of various institu-tions were given 10 minutes to presenttheir research and a further five min-utes for discussion with the audienceand the judge Fr. Kurian Thomas.

Manjula K, a Research Scholarfrom Maharani Ammani college, Ban-galore, was the first to present herpaper which looked at 'The reach andaccess of New Media in the develop-ment of urban women'.' An innovationto democratize media through newmedia' was a case study presented by

Noor Jahan Khan, a faculty of theDepartment of Communication andMedia, Jain University, Bangalore. Shedrew attention to CGnet Swara, an ex-periment to democratize media,started in Chhattisgarh, which servesas a platform for tribal natives whohave limited access to communication,to make their voices heard. The lastthree participants were students, and

Christ University was represented byDeena P of 2nd MCN and Sezel S Lal-wani of 3rd JPEng. Both their researchpapers focused on New Media in Ed-ucation but explored distinctive as-pects of the same. The final paper waspresented by Amrutha Anand of TheManipal institute of Communicationon Ethics in Photo Journalism in thecontext of New Media.

The presentations threw light onthe benefits as well as perils of NewMedia, posing a tough call for thejudges and proving that when itcomes to New Media, and there ismore to it than meets the eye.

Dot Com - a mock website designingcompetition was the concluding eventof day one of Media Meet, 2012. Echo-ing the Media Meet philosophy of “GoGreen” the different websites centredon the theme of ‘environment-conser-vation’. The judges for the event wereeminent figures from the IT industry,Mr. Naveen Iysola and Samrat Man-dal.

As per the rules each team had to

design a semi-functional website witha couple of active links. They weregiven ten minutes to demonstratetheir respective websites and explainthe premise. An additional five min-utes were allotted for feedbacks.

Addressing the growing concernof plastic-waste was Rcube Corpora-tion, the team one NGO. Members ofthe team Shashanka, Laxmi NaraynAgrwal and Sujay Krishana fromChrist University gave a comprehen-sive overview of their NGO. The web-site offered various products andservices. The softwares used to con-struct the website were HTML, CSS,n+1, JavaScript, Photoshop and CorelDraw.

The subsequent team from St.Aloysius College defined their NGO,Environmental Concern Group, as abudding organisation, working to-wards sensitising the youngsters, tothe perils of unregulated industrialisa-tions. The members used Coral DrawPhotoshop and Dreamweaver to de-sign their website

and environment-conservation into anovel concept of stadium cleanupspost cricket matches. The website washosted on “simplesite.com” .

Abhijit B.A, Vivian A and AbdulKareem MA of the following teamfrom Christ University stressed theneed to solicit youth participation inpreserving the national animal ofIndia. Their website offered differentproducts. The tools employed by themwere HTML, CSS and Java Script.

The event culminated with a stir-ring speech by Mr. Naveen Iysola. Op-timistic about the emerging trends inthe IT industry, he advised the audi-ence to pursue their dreams and strivefor excellence.

A Workshop on ‘DigitalAnimation and Gaming’was conducted in theMedia Lab, Christ Univer-sity during the second ses-sion on the first day ofMedia Meet 2012. Headedby Mr. Avanish Pathak, theattendees were takenthrough the basics of 3-D An-imation and Gaming, andtheir applications. Havingcompleted his engineeringfrom PES Mandya, Mr.Avinash Pathak has amassedeight years of experience in the

field of Animation and todayhe is part of ‘Technicolour’ ananimation and multimediacompany formerly known as‘Paprikas’.

It was an interactive ses-sion between the speaker and

the students regarding theirknowledge and ideas about thebasics of animation. Variousclips and videos related to spe-cial effects in movies like HarryPotter, Kung Fu Panda andMadagascar were shown andthe techniques were explained.According to Mr. Pathak, thecore of Animation is art and ananimator needs to be familiarwith the facets of an actor inorder to portray his ideas onscreen.

When asked about howthe session was, Riddhi, a par-ticipant of the workshop said itwas very interactive and in-formative. She also added,”Ihad no idea about the basics inanimation but Mr.Pathak ex-plained every topic with somany examples, that I am fullyfurnished with adequate infor-mation”. The event thus livedupto the expectations and waswell appreciated, becoming ahuge success.

On 24th August 2012, Adobe conducted a workshopcalled, ‘Adobe Connected’ aspart of Media Meet 2012. Theworkshop was conducted byMr. Supreeth Nagaraju-SalesHead for Adobe South Asiaand Sri Lanka and Mr.Vyshak Venugopal- Sr.Consultant for Adobe Sys-tems.

They delved into the

various aspects of communica-tion and how technology hasenabled a truly unique digitalexperience. Mr. Supreeth fur-ther emphasized the need forcollaboration between facultyand students. He comparedthe different means of digitalcommunication devices nowavailable like smartphones,tablets etc.

Mr. Venugopal focused

on the wider aspect of collabo-ration by taking the exampleof Facebook. He said that col-laboration enables one to ex-press their creativity to anindividual or organisation suc-cessfully. Talking about AdobeConnect, he stressed on thefeatures of its accessibility, se-curity, compliance and exten-sibility. Not only does itprovide group video confer-encing, voice calls and filesharing , it also accounts tobetter system performancemanagement.

Apart from that, thedemonstration on making PDFportfolios and projects onAdobe Acrobal by Mr. Vyshakto make presentations moreinteractive, struck the rightchord with the audience as theaudience reverberated with aloud ovation. The workshopended with the audience leftwanting more along with adeeper understanding of theprocess involved.

Day two of Media meet wit-nessed the Intel workshopwhere Usha Sampath, cur-rent Manager of the Enter-prise

Application Develop-ment in Intel IT precededover the session. This work-shop mainly focused on“Innovation” and how Intelrelentlessly innovatesthroughout the corporationin areas of circuitry, proces-sor, software’s and otherpossible aspects. Conceptsincluded “Breakthrough in-novation” and “Reappliedinnovation were the high-lights.

To keep the session in-teractive students were en-gaged in quick and

spontaneous exercises. Ms.Sampath also emphasizedon the relevance of a prod-uct in the market and how itcan be only maintainedthrough regular innova-tions, new ideas and con-stant updation. Videos wereplayed for a better under-standing of technology andvarious recently launchedIntel products. The sessionwas concluded by a men-tion about how an organiza-tion should take up aleader’s role to nurture in-novation, bring ideas to re-ality by thinking somethingdifferent, out of the box andcontinue the culture of in-novation.

The department of Media Studies con-ducted a photography workshop aspart of their annual fest Media Meet.Mr. Chenthil, a contemporary wed-ding photographer based in Bangalorewas the resources person. Photogra-phy is a representation of the subcon-scious of a photographer, the way heperceives a given space or subject.

The key to good photography ishoning the eye. Perspective affords in-dividuality to a picture. However, asa professional one needs to exercise re-straint in interacting with the subjects;capture the moment and not become a

part of it. He recommended various guide-

lines to approaching the discipline.Research is imperative, acquaint your-self with the ambience, be clear aboutyour agenda, construct a rigid work-flow and identify the demographyyou can work with. Marketing is veryimportant. Building a body of work,interacting and networkingtakes youlong way.

The workshop concluded with athriving interactive session. A range ofissues concerning photography werediscussed. The workshop was an en-riching experience and augmented theknowledge of all those in attendance.

Day two witnessed an informative workshop lead by Mr.Ramesh Muniyappa who currenty is the Head PR - JindalSteel Works . In this interactive session he explained publicrelations with references from his own life. The workshopwas based on question and answers with his efforts in try-ing to keep the workshop industry based rather than the-ory based.

Disaster management communication, press release,converting a bad situation into a positive one, importanceof jounalist, breaking the myth about public relations in-dustry were just a few topics that he touched upon. Thebuilding blocks of public relations were discussed atlength, one of which is perception. He says “love your selfand then other” moving on to explain concepts like “Aat-masakshi” to help the students understand the field.

Important tools of media, credibility, print, audio vi-sual and new media – how all these tools have been usedin real life situaltions to save the image, face of a company,individual or political party. The workshop imparted a realimage of the public relations industry and acted like an eyeopener to many students.

Day two of Media Meet2012 was set ablaze withMock Press, a mock rendi-tion of a press conference.The only event painting amake believe journalisticenvironment wherein thejudges were actively in-volved posing as journalistsinvited by the newsmakersdisguised by the partici-pants. This event was allabout how well you can‘mock’ a new media person-ality, the feeling of literallybeing in someone else’sshoes!

Participants werejudged on their convincingportrayal of the character,one’s flair for dramatics,acting prowess and inten-sity with which they vehe-mently defend their stand.

The judges for thisevent were Mr. Arjun-Sashidran, radio presenterand producer with Fever104 FM and Mr.ParthasarthyRavikumar, di-rector of Client Services

with Pan Indian Ad Serv-ices. Participants tried dif-ferent strategies to woe theaudience and judges amongwhich were Karan whoplayed Bieber’s imposterwho stunned everyone withhis beat boxing andShouriya playing the role ofYahoo CEO, Merissa Mayormade his impression withhis accent. On the whole,the event proved successfulwhich energized everyonepresent for an eventful daywith a great start to it.

The second session of Media Meet2012 held at the main auditorium

on 25th August, witnessed a panel dis-cussion focused on the concepts ofviews on new media, cyber online pri-vacy and content generation. The pan-ellists were given time to present theirtopics which were discussed and con-sequently the floor was open to ques-tions from the audience.

The discussion was moderatedby Prof. Anil Pinto, Assistant Profes-sor for the department of English andMedia Studies, Christ University, whogave a brief run through the evolutionof media and how the present digitalage is shaped. The panellists includedstalwarts from various sections of themedia industry namely - Dominic D'-Souza, an expert on cyber law andlegal advisor for Zee Communica-tions, S. Natrajan, electronics andpower engineer from Intel South Asia,Angelo Mathews, Sr. Producer at Net-work 18, Ramesh Muniyappa, Man-ager - PR and Corporatecommunications for Jindal Steel

Works, Operations Head at Zomato,Rohin Thampy and James North whomanages online content for Green-peace.

Mr. Dominic D'Souza started offwith a presentation on Indian cyberlaws and online privacy which lookedat cyber ethics, cyber crimes and stay-ing protected from them. Mr. Natrajanfrom intel, proposed some enlighten-ing information regarding the evolu-tion of personal computing, frombeing all about productivity, whichmoved into portability with the intro-duction of wireless technology, and

hence 'ubiquity' by 2015 with the ex-panse in connectivity between almostall electronic media including embed-ded systems. Angelo Mathews andRohin Thampy looked into the impor-tance of Brand Packaging and how iteffects the influence of marketingthrough new media. James North dis-cussed the concept of 'Radical Trans-parency' in the present age.

Mr. Ramesh Muniyappa spokeabout his views on PR tools in NewMedia and how it is effecting the pri-vacy of the netizen, after which thefloor was open for discussion. Prof.Anil Pinto concluded the discussionafter a healthy debate between thepanellists and the audience.

The Panel discussion was fruitfulas it gave the audience an opportunityto address their concerns and doubtson the topics being covered andopened avenues for healthy interac-tion between all present, providing fora fitting end to the events of MediaMeet 2012.

Get Ready to be Mocked!Day one of media meet 2012saw a strong participationfor the quiz competition-“Tech-A-Mukka” by 19 tal-ented teams. The prelimi-nary round consisted ofwritten round which sawthe teams fighting it out fora place in the final.

Day two of media meetsaw the scintillating finaleof Tech-A-Mukka take placein the main auditorium. Mr.Arul Mani the Vice Presi-dent of Karnataka Quiz As-sociation was invited topreside over this war of witsand to tickle the grey cells of

the participants.The atmosphere was

electrifying as the partici-pants were asked a plethoraof challenging, adrenalinepumping and mind bog-gling questions under thebroad umbrella of science,technology and media. De-spite the intense competi-tion all the teams played fairand after five exhaustiveand nerve wrecking rounds,team 4 emerged victorious.Team 2 bagged the secondposition and Team 5 camethird.

Mr. Arul Mani praisedall the participants and thequiz organizers for their ef-forts for making the event agreat success. He alsothanked the enthusiasticand cooperative audience.The afternoon was filledwith lots of thrilled and ex-citement, with both the par-ticipants and audience,thoroughly enjoying theproceedings.

Media Meet 2012 came to an endwith a perfect valedictory on the25th. The presence of the Pro ViceChancellor of Christ UniversityFr. Abraham, Vice President ofIntel Mr. Sudhir Shetty and TheHead of Media Studies Depart-ment Professor Naresh Raograced the occasion. The words ofthese esteemed dignitaries wereinspirational and motivating.

The winners of Media Meet2012 were then facilitated withprizes and mementos as a tokenof appreciation for their participa-tion and, in a way, an encourage-ment for their future endeavours.

The culturals consisted of amime highlighting the conse-quences of extreme usage of so-cial networking sites. Theperformance took the audiencethrough the transition of time inthe field of communication andconcentrated mainly on the pres-ent day scenario with social net-working.

Also a dance sparking atrend emphasizing the transitionfrom the age old days to wherewe stand today and a perfectlysynchronized media meet songand a medley.

The curtains closed forMedia Meet-2012 doing perfectjustice to the phrase, “All is well,that ends well”.
