Media Literacy

able to read, write and understand

messages.

Page 5: Media literacy

Johannes Gutenberg

In Johannes Gutenberg invented the

printing press with replaceable/moveable

wooden or metal letters in 1436

(completed by 1440). This method of

printing can be credited not only for a

revolution in the production of books, but

also for fostering rapid development in

the sciences, arts and religion through the

transmission of texts.

Hyper Abundant Media

….Media is now not just words and

symbols, we are saturated, constantly

exposed to messages.

Page 8: Media literacy

Media Dependency & Active

Processing of Content

Media now includes our social world, and

actively turning symbols in our mind. We

not only receive information, but actives

process the symbols in our mind. Think of

the mind as like a file cabinet.

Violence in the Media

Compare the actions in the media to what would really happen in reality.

For example, in a movie, heroes often destroy property and commit murder, but never have to pay for damages or serve jail time.

In real life, what consequences might the hero face? Would this person be admired? When is violence justified?

Quotes from the papers….

In my own opinion, the movie helps

teenagers to understand that doing

violent actions in not a good way to

express their feeling. And from that I think

the teenager can learn that the violence

might harm the others and destroy one’s

life.

Page 22: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

The affects of this violence of this

violence wind up killing all the people

who are faced with the events and even

shows the pain they deal with right before

they die.

Page 23: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

The more youths see harm and danger in

the media, the less rational thinking they

do in their lives.

Page 24: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

A study done by Albert Bandura (1961)

about violence in television changed

many aspects of television today.

Bandara asked children to watch a

television show about how a woman

beats up a bobo doll. Eventually, the

children showed the exact same response

to the bobo doll as in the video.

Page 25: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

When the violence occurred, nothing

would happen and the story would move

on. Tom gets attached most of the

time, most likely you’ll see blood or guts

flying everywhere but Tom is fine in every

single episode. Sometimes it shows some

symptoms such as bruising, burns, etc.

However, they recover so fast it looks as if

nothing has happened.

Page 26: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

Concerning The Dark Knight Rises …when

a certain evil man rises to the

streets, Batman has no choice but to

return and fight the very evil man and his

followers, there is a lot of violence and

blowing up.

Page 27: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

With the movie Scream…..of course there

is evidence that the person has been

killed intentionally considering the amount

of blood surrounding the body along with

the cuts from each stab, but there is

absolutely nothing to prove that it was as

if the killer had disappeared into thin air

and was nowhere to be found until the

next victim.

Page 28: Media literacy

Quotes from the papers…

People who have a habit of shooting

people in video games brutally, forget the

reality between reality and electronics.
