IAAF PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEI am pleased to introduce this information guide for media representatives attending the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018 (1 – 4 March 2018).

The IAAF World Indoor Championships are the most important IAAF World Athletics Series competition after the Outdoor World Championships.

The United Kingdom has been a regular and trusted host of IAAF World Athletics Series events over the decades. Cardiff was the venue for the 2016 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and, most recently of course, London’s Olympic Stadium was the stage for a spectacular 2017 IAAF World Championships. With Birmingham hosting the World Indoors this March, the UK becomes the first-ever nation to stage the Outdoor and Indoor World Championships back-to-back across two seasons.

Birmingham, which has recently been awarded the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is itself no stranger to world-class global athletics, staging an IAAF Diamond League meeting annually. The city also hosted the IAAF World Half Marathon in 2009. Most memorably of all, Arena Birmingham, which will welcome the world’s best indoor performers in 2018, also held the 9th IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2003.

Sports fans rely on TV and radio broadcasters, written and on-line press and photographers to relay the four days of sporting action from the championships around the world. Understanding their vital role in promoting the entertainment and excitement of the very best of indoor athletics competition, the IAAF and Local Organising Committee are rightly committed to offering the very best media facilities and services.

I offer my best wishes to the media for a successful and enjoyable visit to Birmingham.

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM BIRMINGHAMOn behalf of the city, I am delighted to welcome you to the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018.

After successfully staging this event previously in 2003, these Championships hold a special place in our hearts and I couldn’t be happier to see them return to the city. We are also very proud to become the second city in the world to host the Championships more than once.

I know that some of you will have attended the 2003 Championships, and if you did, and haven’t returned to Birmingham since you’ll notice some major changes both to the city and to the venue.

Birmingham is not afraid to reinvent itself, with major retail, leisure and business hubs - including the NEC, Brindleyplace, Mailbox, the Bullring, and, more recently, Grand Central and the Library of Birmingham - providing strong examples of the urban regeneration the city has become famed for. This development and regeneration will be evident during your visit to the city, with several new and exciting projects underway.

Arena Birmingham has also changed considerably in recent years, following an extensive refurbishment. This has ensured that we have

world-class facilities to accommodate major championships such as this and that we have improved areas for the athletes, the

spectators, our invited guests and members of the media.

Birmingham is often described as the home of athletics in Britain and it is a title which we certainly live up to, hosting major events indoors at Arena Birmingham and outdoors at the Alexander Stadium, a venue which will itself undergo a transformation in the next few years in preparation for us hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

I hope you enjoy your time in Birmingham.

2. BIRMINGHAM AND THE IAAF WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

2.1 Introducing the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018Since their modest beginnings in 1985 as the World Indoor Games, the IAAF World Indoor Championships (from 1987) have more than doubled in size to grow into the second largest of the IAAF’s World Athletics Series events.

Setting the stage were the IAAF World Indoor Games which attracted 319 athletes from 69 countries to Paris in January 1985. Conflicting with events on the popular North American indoor circuit, the competition was largely a European affair, but nonetheless illustrated the interest, potential and need of a truly global event. That reached fruition two years later when the inaugural edition of the championships was staged at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, USA, a three-day gathering of 402 athletes from 84 countries that witnessed five new world indoor records. Heike Drechsler was the star of that edition, winning her specialty, the long jump, and blasting to a world indoor record in the 200m. In all, the IAAF World Indoor Championships have been the setting for 38 world records

With the exception of back-to-back editions in 2003 and 2004, the event has been held biennially since, growing in stature and reach with almost every staging. No fewer than 171 countries sent teams to the 14th edition in Istanbul in 2012; 148 participated at the most recent edition, two years ago in Portland.

The 1989 edition in Budapest featured dramatic World record performances by Cuban Javier Sotomayor who cleared 2.43m in the high jump, Dutchwoman Elly van Hulst, who clocked 8:33.82 in the 3000m, and Kenyan Paul Ereng, who clocked 1:44.84 in the 800m.

There were more 800m heroics in Paris in 1997 where Wilson Kipketer of Denmark broke the World record in the event twice; first in the heats, with a 1:43.96 run, and again, two days later, in the final, where he shattered it with a 1:42.67 performance.

The 800m also figures prominently on the women’s side of the competition. Maria Mutola of Mozambique won a staggering seven world titles over the distance in her nine appearances: the most individual titles by a woman. Sotomayor has been the most successful on the men’s side, with four gold, one silver and one bronze in his six appearances.

After a successful edition in 2003, Birmingham will host the event for the second time from 1-4 March 2018, a competition that will crown 28 new world indoor champions, 14 on both the men’s and women’s programmes.

2.2 Birmingham city of sport Birmingham is frequently described as the home of athletics in the UK, having hosted more athletics events than any other British city.

The venue for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, Arena Birmingham, has staged indoor athletics for more than 25 years, with the Indoor Grand Prix proving to be one of the most popular sports event

the venue hosts. The same venue also hosted the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2003 and the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2007.

The city also annually stages the British Athletics Team Trials and the Muller Grand Prix Birmingham, part of the IAAF’s Diamond League series. These two events take place at the Alexander Stadium, a venue which will be completely redeveloped over the next few years, so that it can host the athletics programme for the Commonwealth Games in 2022, an event awarded to Birmingham in December 2017.

But although Birmingham is rightly proud of its links to the number one Olympic sport, the city is passionate about all sport. Other events hosted in recent years include the Aegon Classic tennis tournament, group games from the 2015 Rugby World Cup and several big fixtures as part of cricket’s ICC Champions Trophy.

In fact, March is a big month for sport in Birmingham, as hot on the heels of the IAAF World Indoor Championships, Arena Birmingham will also host the Yonex All England Badminton Championships (14 to 18 March) and the 2018 Gymnastics World Cup (21 and 22 March).

And it’s not all about watching sports events in Birmingham. The city also stages a huge number of participation events. Its portfolio grew in 2017, with Velo Birmingham - which involved thousands of people cycling through the streets of the city in September - and the city’s first International Marathon was held in October 2017.

2.3 Ruby the Red Panda – Official mascot for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Ruby is the official mascot of the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018. She takes her name from the gemstone, to reflect her sparkling personality and as a nod to the city’s world-famous Jewellery Quarter.

Ruby was unveiled at the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park, which is home to three red pandas; two adults, Mo and Amba, and their daughter Mambo. The park is a key part of European endangered species breeding programme looking to protect this beautiful species from extinction.

In 2005, one of the first red pandas to arrive in the Conservation Park, Babu, famously went missing for four days before being found and returned to his enclosure. He was later named ‘Brummie of the Year’.

Flashguns / strobesThe use of flashguns and strobes is strictly prohibited during any competition session.

Internet accessSee separate Technology section on page 32.

Interview ZonePhotographers have access to the Interview Zone. However, it is important to work in cooperation with written press or broadcasters.

LockersBespoke lockers for photographers are available at Arena Birmingham in the photo work room on a first-come, first-served basis. Please ask at the help desk in the photo work room if you would like to use a locker.

Medal ceremoniesOn Thursday, 1 March medal ceremonies will be held on the field of play at the 60m start area. Photographers wishing to shoot the ceremonies and who are not already infield for the high jump competition, will need to gather at the end of the photo work room. The Photo Management team will then proceed to bring photographers onto the infield as a group. Please make sure you ask a member of staff at the photo work room help desk if you wish to shoot medal ceremonies on that day.

From Friday 2 March onwards, medal ceremonies will be held on a balcony in front of the big screen at Arena Birmingham. Photographers interested in shooting medal ceremonies will need to use the stairs to access the balcony and be in place on the right-hand side of the balcony a maximum of five minutes before the start of the ceremony.

In the case of consecutive ceremonies, photographers will need to remain in place until the conclusion of the last ceremony.

Mi-Fi devicesMi-Fi and any other personal hotspot devices capable of transmitting wireless signals interfere with the main Wi-Fi provision so must not be used anywhere inside Arena Birmingham.

Please also make sure you are not tethering your connection via your phone.

OpeningThe opening for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018 will take place at Arena Birmingham from 18:00 on Thursday, 1 March. The opening event will feature protocol elements including speeches by key personalities related to the Championships.

More details on the ceremony will be provided to press and photographers closer to the event.

Photo bibsPhotographers will be able to collect their photo bib at the photographers’ briefing on 1 March. A £20 / €20 deposit or an Identity Card is required for the bib, refundable on return at the end of the Championships. Photographers will be asked to sign a code of conduct prior to collecting their bib.

The bib allows access to photo positions and must be worn at all times when working at Arena Birmingham. All bibs are the property of the IAAF and must be returned.

Outfield photographers will be issued with a yellow bib that is uniquely numbered and non-transferable.

To access infield positions, you will need your request for infield access approved by the IAAF Photo Commissioner. Infield photographers must switch their yellow bib for a black infield bib. This will be facilitated by the IAAF Photo Commissioner.

Lost and stolen bibs must be reported to the Media Operations team as soon as possible; losing or not returning your bib will forfeit your deposit.

Remote cameras and releasesThe use of remote cameras is welcomed but installation is subject to approval by the Photo Manager and IAAF Photo Commissioner (for infield). Installations must take place no later than one and a half hours prior to the start of the competition session.

Note that the radio frequencies of the pocket wizard devices must meet UK requirements and not interfere with other equipment used by the LOC or the Rights holders during competition. Please see Spectrum section for details.

Spectator seatsPhotographers may work from empty spectator seats at Arena Birmingham. However, when the ticket holder arrives, the seat must be relinquished immediately. While working in empty seats, you must take instruction from any member of the Media Operations or Stadium staff and not cause disturbance to spectators.

SpectrumPhotographers may use remote shutter devices such as Pocket Wizards as long as they meet CE regulations and operate within the UK permitted frequency ranges of 433.05 to 434.79 MHz, 863 to 876 MHz, 915 to 921 MHz and 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz.

Please note that you must present remote shutter devices for testing and tagging prior to use. This can be done, free of charge, in the photo work room. Time slots for test and tag will be advertised in the photo work room each day. If you do not undertake the test and tag process, you will not be permitted to use your device.

Although devices in the 2.4 GHz range are permitted, we strongly advise against the use of these. This frequency range is likely to become swamped by other radio devices such as Wi-Fi access points and mobile phones and the risk of poor performance due to radio interference is high. Note that 5 GHz devices are not permitted.

n Download software and app updates as soon as they appear. They contain vital security upgrades that keep your devices and business information safe.

n Use strong passwords made up of at least three random words. Using lower and upper case letters, numbers and symbols will make your passwords even stronger.

n Delete suspicious emails, as they may contain fraudulent requests for information or links to viruses.

n Ensure anti-virus software is up to date. Your computers, tablets and smartphones can easily become infected by small pieces of software known as viruses or malware. Install internet security software like anti-virus protection on all your devices to help prevent infection.
