Media Evaluation Question 5

Introduction. • I'm totally aware of who my audience are, this is evident due to the

fact I've discussed this in the answer to my previous question, therefore there are certain features I can include or steps I can take to try to attract the specific audience I intend to appeal to, to my magazine. • I’ll be discussing the points I took into consideration when creating my

magazine in this presentation.

The use of my focus group• I did a lot of online research looking into similar magazines, styles they use

and the audience they intend to appeal to, however the most valuable piece of research I carried out was my focus group, this is because this gave me direct opinions from individuals that fall into the category my target audience. • This is why I took this opportunity to ask them questions and try to

incorporate they're answers, opinions and advice into my media product. • Something else which I feel may have made appealing to my target audience

easier is the fact I fall into my target audience (teenage male with a passion for indie rock music) this enabled me to allow my own opinion to dominate important decisions I made when producing my magazine as what ever I feel may look aesthetically pleasing is probably also what the rest of my target audience also feel.

Opinions of my focus group – Colour • After showing my focus group images of different front overs,

contents pages and double page spreads with all different colour schemes it became clear to me that having 3 dominant colours on each page is what looks more aesthetically pleasing in relation to my genre. • I then asked my focus group about more specific colours and which

colours may look better and which go well together. After hearing their opinions and experimenting on photohop of sometime with different ideas I came to the conclusion that white, red and black should be the colour scheme for my magazine.

Colour • It wasn’t just my focus group that influenced the idea of using three main

colours to dominate my pages, there is another reason to why suggested this to them. • Its something I have mentioned before in my evaluation but is relevant at

this point as well. As my target audience is men, it is known that men like simplicity (aesthetically), this is why keeping the colour scheme simple with no extreme colours and only few, may look for attractive to males. • This idea itself its something I discussed with my focus group but it was

the reason to which I asked them if having 3 dominant colours looks better than any alternative.

Layout • The layout is another way in which in which is was able to attract my

audience. Again I've used the same theory when designing my layout as I did when choosing a colour. • The same theory of then like simplicity. This is why looking at the

layout of all of my pages, they're all very basic layouts with not a lot going on, this is something that men find a lot more aesthetically pleasing. • On The slide following on from this are my designs in comarison to

other designs which aren't designed for men and it is obvious that the ones not designed for men are not as simple as my designs. • All three of the female designs have brighter colours on the page,

more text and all-round just look a lot busier.

Image • The images I used have a few factors within them that I have used to

attract my target audience. • The first two go hand in hand, I have used a young male artist, the fact

he is male and teenage means he falls into my target audience. This in itself is something that may attract my taregt audience as they may feel they could connect with the magazine as the face of it is soemone who may fall into a simialr social group to them. • I have also used direct address on my front cover. which again helps the

audience to subconsciously feel connected to the artist, thus meaning they may then have an interest in the magaizne which may led to them purchaing it.

Image (denim jacket) • Something else I have used within my images is a lot of denim. Denim

jackets are often seen worn my top indie rock artists at the moment are are very stylish amongst the indie scene. So by using a denim ajcket not only on the front cover but on my other pages as well just reinforces the indie theme throughout my magaizne.
