The settings completely juxtapose each other in the two movies, with the dark comedy In Bruges using a more old-fashioned sort of setting, whereas the action thriller uses a much more modern setting, with skyscrapers everywhere. This immediately tells the viewer that these films are going to juxtapose each other in a severe fashion.

The opening sequence for in Bruges focuses heavily on religious imagery by showing castles in the shots. This clearly shows a religious theme.

The opening sequence for Batman: The dark knight shows tall buildings, which could represent Gotham city’s wealth. This also shows how some of the movie’s crime situations could be fuelled by money, making crime a sub-genre of the thriller.

Both of these shots look like they come from approximately the same angle around the pivotal character(s) but mean completely different things. One of these would be how the joker is alone, giving some kind of “leader” theme, but on the other hand, the two from in Bruges most likely work as a team.

The grim skies and lifeless tree. show a sort of dark theme, and through the obscene language, viewers can tell the movie will be a dark comedy.

The person shown in this shot clearly looks terrified, showing that people should be prepared for some vaguely scary parts.

Another notable aspect of these two movies are the characters, with Heath Ledger’s joker being internationally praised. In the Dark Knight, we see how the Joker constantly stumbles, making him that much more dangerous and disturbing for the viewers and really emphasising that crime sub-genre. On the other hand, the two characters from In Bruges are very opinionated, making for some (sometimes dark) comedic moments.

A mid-shot of both main characters shows how miserable they are about their situation. This is of course, referenced by the previously mentioned poor weather, giving the scene pathetic fallacy. Adding to this is the leafless trees that cast a depressing feeling on the sequence. This shouldn’t express happiness to the viewer.

An iconic close-up of the Joker’s face portrays a scary aspect of what some people thought would be more family friendly than it seemed. The close up shows how the Joker doesn’t mind getting close and personal with his enemies/victims.

The titles are presented very differently in the two films. For The Dark Knight, the Warner Bros. sign has gone a dark blue and the titles are, in general presented as any movie would, coming one after another in succession, but In Bruges goes against that as its flicks between companies, producers, directors with pictures of Bruges during the night. This contrast shows how important the setting is for the dark comedy as it goes through so many areas throughout the city.
