3 pyranha Burn c30 because so many folks loved the H3 for creeking and expeditions, Pyranha decided to update it with a little more volume and style. The burn puts the emphasis on getting down the river with safety, speed, and finesse. Designed as a river-running creek boat, it can replace a couple of boats in your quiver. Experienced creekers will like the flatter bottom, beginners will love the forgiveness and edge control. Assorted.

length: s 7ft. 9in., m 8ft., l 8ft. 3in. Beam: s 25in., m 25¾in., l 26¼in.

1 New pyranha karnaliForgiving and predictable, to inspire newbies to explore their full potential. High volume flotation frees up first-timers to read the river ahead rather than worry about what’s going on below. It reconciles beginner-friendliness with the ability to take on Class IV creeks, thanks to round edges and plenty of rocker. Pre-fitted with strong, safe grab loops and rescue points.

Assorted. length: m 8ft. 4in., l 8ft. 5in. Beam: m 25½in., l 26.2in.

5018-797 21kg (M) $1000

Pyranha is synonymous with cutting-edge designs and materials. Roto-moulded Meta-Lite ultralinear polyethylene makes them stiffer than most North American boats. Connect 30 (C30) outfitting includes a drilled-out seat and hull stiffener to reduce weight. With injection-moulded thigh grips and precise moulding, this makes for some of the lightest fully outfitted kayaks available. Rapid Plus (RP) outfitting on select boats gets you basic yet fully functional rigging for a great price.

Sea kayaking around the British Isles means paddling in advanced “big-seas” conditions. P&H designs boats for safety, and fun, in such conditions. The solid hull construction and watertight Kajak Sport hatches won’t flinch when rescuing loaded boats, and will take it in stride when seal landings unravel into crash landings. Recessed deck fittings avoid any hang-ups. The internal skeg is easily trimmed for any desired balance of tracking and manoeuvrability.

7 Nigel foster legenda thoroughbred, expedition-volume sea-steed for intermediate to advanced paddlers. True Greenland lines are combined with careful Canadian construction to create a sleek, light, fast boat that handles well in wild conditions and surfs superbly on following seas. The narrow beam allows great speed while the chines offer substantial secondary stability, allowing you to edge confidently for carving turns. Drop-down skeg for sharper tracking when desired. Hatches, safety line anchor points, and compass mount are all recessed to minimize spray. Blue, Red, Yellow. length: 17ft. 10in. beam: 21in.

4017-778 26kg $3700

6 Seaward Chinook TXa flatter hull and long waterline make this seaward’s most stable kayak. It’s an excellent platform for fishing and photography. Yet it’s also a quick and responsive cruiser, and a great all around touring boat. Orange, Red, Yellow. length: 17ft. beam: 24in.

5016-664 23.6kg $2375

5 Seaward Chilcoa sleek expedition craft. Well-defined multiple chines reduce wetted surface area for greater speed and predictability when edging. This lets you minimize drag by keeping the rudder up much of the time. low rocker for high speed and effortless tracking. shallow V cross-section for stability at rest or in motion. low profile assures easy rolling and low wind resistance. Navy Blue, Red, Yellow, Yellow Fade. length: 18ft. 6in. beam: 22½in.

5001-230 25kg $3500

Based in BC, Seaward makes hand-laid fibreglass boats of exceptional quality. Noteworthy features include rudder pedals that pivot rather than slide, allowing you to brace more solidly. To minimize confusion, the rudder lowering and raising lines are on opposite sides of the cockpit. A plastic keel guard protects the stern during landings. Secure nylon straps hold the paddle for paddle float self-rescues; quick-release tabs free it rapidly after re-entry. Colour fades, footpumps, underdeck bags, and locking hatches are also available.

Over decades of paddling, Nigel Foster has covered thousands of miles along England, Scotland, Iceland, Baffin Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, including lots of long crossings and plenty of “firsts.” So he knows what works in kayaks for exposed waters and long expeditions. His sea-savvy designs are combined with Seaward Kayak’s superb construction to make craft worthy of skilled and adventurous paddlers.

MeC Staff TipDon’t have a sail for your kayak? Use an umbrella. When travelling downwind, just slide the handle of the umbrella under the bungee on your front deck and you’ll be amazed at the cruising speed you can achieve. Plus you have instant shade when having lunch at sea.Robert, Store StaffQuebec City store

ReCReATIONAl KAYAKS

Old Town has more than a century of experience with canoes and kayaks. Their boats are a blend of tradition and technology, reflected in durable designs and innovative plastic construction. Variable layer polyethylene is about 10% lighter than single-layer plastic, but just as stiff.

Evergreen’s years of canoe building have given them great expertise with composite construction. They’ve used that experience in making the Envy, one of the best-performing day touring kayaks around.

Elite versions are an überlight Kevlar® honeycomb layup. These kayaks are speedboats, not battleships: don’t drop them while loading or unloading from roof racks, don’t seal launch or land them, and ensure they’re completely afloat when boarding/exiting.

PeRfORMANCe KAYAKS

PeRfORMANCe KAYAKSThe increasing popularity of these sleek shells reflects a trend toward shorter-duration, higher-intensity sessions. They are light, low-volume, and fast, to appeal to adventure racers and aerobic athletes.

like bikes, the faster you’re moving, the more stable these boats become. They aren’t made for standing still. The canted sitting position in the kayak’s cockpit doesn’t merely allow you to use your abdominal muscles with every stroke, it requires you to. It lets you develop awesome power and speed – and, over time, a solid six-pack.

To get the full potential from a performance kayak, pair it with a wing blade paddle. The time you invest learning proper wing paddle technique will be rewarded by leaving other paddlers in your wake.

GeAR YOU GOTTA hAveIn waters under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Coast Guard, paddlers are required to have:

1. One Canadian-approved personal flotation device or life jacket of appropriate size for each person on board.

2. One buoyant heaving line of not less than 15m in length.

3. One manual propelling device Or an anchor with not less than 15m of cable, rope, or chain in any combination.

4. One bailer or one manual water pump fitted with, or accompanied by, sufficient hose to enable a person using the pump to pump water from the bilge of the vessel over the side of the vessel.

Tech Talk

You’ve found the perfect PFD – it fits well, suits your paddling style, and you want it to last. Here’s a few things to keep in mind.

Don’t sit on your PFD. It may seem like a comfy cushion, but you should be wearing it – not sitting on it – as abrasion and compression could reduce its buoyancy.

Hand wash your PFD with warm water and a gentle soap. Then completely dry it out before storing it away, to reduce the chance of mildew. And always store it out of direct sunlight – UV rays degrade the fabric and make it more brittle and less durable over time.

Built to truly work for active users. A key ingredient is the amazingly elastic neoprene that stretches to twice its resting length, in four directions. Our garments are mostly, or entirely, made from this wonder material (the only exceptions are static areas such as knee and butt reinforcements). So, they fit snug and warm all over, yet allow you to move as freely as a sleek marine mammal. At a minimum, all seams are glued and blind stitched. Critical junctures are reinforced with spot taping. Made in Thailand. tech talk

chooSing nEoPREnENeoprene comes in a variety of styles and thicknesses. The colder the weather or water, the thicker you want your neoprene to be. Thick 5mm is used for extremities, in items such as pogies or booties.

Farmer John/Jane style wetsuits are made of 2 and 3mm neoprene for versatility. Wear them with a light, sun-protective top for summer and shoulder-season paddling. For kayak surfing, whitewater, and cold-water settings where you may swim, team them with a drytop equipped with a sprayskirt tunnel.

Shorts, pants, and shorty wetsuits are made with thinner (often 2mm) neoprene, for use in warm weather and water. When paddling in the tropics, pants or shorts provide a nice balance of coolness and coverage for warm water swims.
