    aulty lifestyle blended with modernization led to metabolic disorders and chronic ill health irrespective of age group. The rapid changes in living style trigger added

    disadvantages in health domain. The common mass, especially in the urban agglomerations are more prone to get engulf in lifestyle related disorders like diabetes, obesity, depression, anxiety, etc.

    Everybody yearn for happiness that depends upon the fine mechanism of body and mind balance. The quality of life needs more thrust on preventive and promotive approach apart from curative. The preventive and promotive domains of health are largely controlled by Yoga.

    Yoga being a refreshing and rejuvenate modality has in-depth potential, tries to bring harmony among various component of Yogic lifestyles- physical, social, emotional, mental and psychological. The subtler features of Yoga has the potential of bringing balance and vibrancy in life by evolving a holistic regimen. The dynamism of Yoga brings synergy to body's ability to stay calm and focused. Yoga therapy focuses on the path of yoga as a healing journey that brings balance to all aspects of life.

    Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) organized a mega event, National Yoga Week, an Annual Mass Awareness Programmes for Health, Happiness and Harmony through Yoga from 12-18 February, 2012 in the Institute premises. National Yoga Week–2012 was dedicated to the theme–'Yoga for Holistic Personality Development' with objectives of providing a common platform to policy makers, Yoga experts, specialists, professionals and researchers from allied disciplines and Yoga students to discuss and deliberate upon the theme; and also to propagate knowledge among the masses.

    The institute has established 5 Advanced Centres for Yoga in collaborating with the premier Medical institutes like NIHMNS, Bangalore; JIPMER, Pudduchery; DIPAS, New Delhi; GAU, Jamnagar; and GMC, Jammu. These are the leading centres in the realm of Yoga Education, Therapy, Research & Training.

    MDNIY has established four Yoga Therapy Centres in Delhi. The basic objective of establishing these centres is to mainstream Yoga in the existing healthcare system. These Centres are providing Yoga consultation, and imparts Therapy to the patients.

    The Institute has established 20 Preventive Health care units of Yoga in CGHS dispensaries of Delhi and NCR.

    Swami Vivekananda District Yoga Wellness Centres (SVDYWC), are being run by the Institute through public private partnership (PPP). The main objectives of the scheme are to support Non-Government Organizations (NGO) partially to promote Yogic activities for public healthcare and to encourage utilization of Yoga professionals in public health care delivery programmes. 100 districts from various parts of the country have been covered. Selection of another 100 districts are in the final process.

    Among other highlights, the important ones are the participation of the Institute at Arogya Jaipur, Trivandrum, Surajkund Mela and MTNL perfect Mela.

    To sensitize and encourage yo u n g p ro fe s s i o n a l s a n d researchers to engage in more fruitful systematic and scientific research on Yoga were also one of the aspects of the event. National Yoga Week – 2012 mainly comprised Conference, Seminar and Workshops.

Vikram Singh Gaur, Joint Secretary to Govt. of India, MHFW, Dept. of AYUSH. A souvenir was released during the Inaugural Function to commemorate the event.

    The Valedictory Function was organised on 18th February. Dr. M.V. Bhole was the Chief Guest. The function was presided by Sh. Bala Prasad, Joint Secretary to Govt. of India, MHFW, Dept. of AYUSH.

    Resolutions of National Yoga Week-2012

    A f t e r d u e d e l i b e r a t i o n s , following resolutions were framed from the feedbacks and opinions received from eminent scholars invited for key-note address and the experts and the delegates coming from nuke and corner of India for National Yoga Week-2012 at MDNIY, New Delhi.

    (1) A s Y o g a h a s g r e a t potentiality for development of holistic personality,

    MDNIY should take steps to prepare suitable training modules to be integrated in the education system of our country.

E n t h r a l l i n g c u l t u r a l p r o g r a m m e s w e r e a l s o organized by students and staff of Dev Sanskriti Vishwadyalaya, Haridwar on 17th February. An enchanting fusion programme, Yoga demonstration were also performed by DYSc students, MDNIY.

    E m i n e n t Yo g a e x p e r t s , Professionals and Specialists f r o m A l l i e d S c i e n c e s participated in the weeklong mega event. Around 1000 delegates and students from different parts of the country participated. About 80 experts of Yoga and Allied Sciences also shared their views. Overall, the response was overwhelming.

    (2) MDNIY can be a nodal institute to formulate and implement such training modules in schools and colleges of our country under directives from the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of H. & F.W., Govt. of India, New Delhi.

    (3) Appropriate workshops, camps, lectures, awareness programmes on 'Holistic Personality Development t h ro u g h Yo g a' c a n b e executed for all throughout the year. Such programmes can be initiated in each and every hospital, clinics, health and fitness centers, and all the health sectors.

    (4) Yoga instructors / teachers shall be trained with suitable training programmes to develop holistic personality of masses as well as for s c h o o l s a n d c o l l e g e s . Services of Government and Non-government agencies can be utilized for this purpose.

    (5) Suitable modules for masses shall also be prepared and implemented with the help of various Yoga institutions, other willing institutions, health centers and hospitals.

    (6) In order to overcome anomalies due to modern life styles related disorders and the use of technology in

    Swami Vivekananda District Yoga Wellness Centres

    Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) has successfully established 100 wellness centres under its scheme Swami Vivekananda District Yoga Wellness Centres (SVDYWC) through public private partnership (PPP) in different districts of the country. All the centres are running satisfactorily.

    The selection for another 100 districts for the Second Phase of SVDYWC is in process.

    The main motto of the scheme is to support Non-Government Organizations (NGO) partially to promote Yogic activities for publ ic healthcare and to encourage utilization of Yoga professionals in public health care delivery programmes.

    Under this scheme, the eligible N o n - G o v e r n m e n t a l Organizations (NGOs) are getting Rs. 3.90 lakh as recurring grant (one time) for carrying out different Yoga activities at the district level.

    I. Foundation Course in Yoga for Wellness (FCYW) of one-month duration. (at least 10 programme in a year.)

    ii. Yoga Awareness Programme of 3-5 days duration

    SVDYWC are required to p e r f o r m t h e f o l l o w i n g programmes:

    every walk of life and to counteract educational s t r e s s i n a d o l e s c e n t population, the proposal for

    the forthcoming National Yoga Week – 2013 on 'Yoga for Adolescent Health' should be considered.

    (minimum 15 hrs.) – Minimum 4 programmes in a year.

    iii. Special Yoga Programmes for General Wellbeing.

    iv. Regular Yoga Training Programme for prevention and promotion of health for general public of each

    minimum one hour duration ( m i n i m u m 2 Tr a i n i n g programmes of each one h o u r d u r a t i o n d a i l y, separately for male and female).

    Workshop on Yogic Management of Executive Stress

    The stress level, especially in the executives, has been increased tremendously during the last few decades and consequently the number of stress related disorders is also growing rapidly. The various techniques of Yoga are sure to play a role in the alleviation of stress.

    With this reason the Institute had started conducting the Workshop on Yogic Management of Executive Stress from October, 2011. Initially this was planned for two days but later on the workshop has been conducted only for a day, as the Executives could not spare their time for 2 days.

    The programme is a compact schedule of 9 hours comprising of both theory and practical. The senior Faculty from the Institute and eminent Experts of leading Yoga Institutes of the country have conducted this programme. The target group was Executives of Government/ Public Sector/ Private Sector/ Industries or Organizations/ Senior Medical Officers and Educational Institutes.

    Fee charged for the programme was Rs. 600/- per participant.

    The total number of participants in the last 6 workshops were 32

    Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) has conducted w o r k s h o p s o n “ Y o g i c Management of Li festyle related Disorders” on last Sunday of every month from 8.00 am-6.00 pm for the benefit of the general public on specific topic.

    The objective of the programme was to give an insight to the patients about their disease's condition and to encourage them to adopt the Yogic lifestyle f o r t h e p r e v e n t i o n a n d m a n a g e m e n t o f s p e c i f i c disorders.

    Eminent Yoga experts and Specialists were invited both for theory and practical sessions.

    The Senior Medical Officer & Yoga Experts were also a v a i l a b l e f o r p e r s o n a l consultation.

    Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi have been appointed as Nodal Agencies to verify the applicant NGOs and also to monitor the scheme subsequent to engagement of 100 such NGOs.

    Diploma in Yoga Science (DYSc): Batch 2011-12)

    The Diploma in Yoga Science: 2011-12 was a full time, regular, non-residential course of one year duration comprised two semesters (August to January and February to July).

    In the session of Diploma in Yoga Science 2011-12, total 94 students were admitted.

    The Course includes a period of regular study of Traditional Yogic Texts, Philosophy of Yoga, its application in human health care, Management and updated Modern Medical knowledge, physiology with reference to applied aspects of Yoga. The course comprises the studies of allied subjects like Ayurveda, Diet & Nutrition, Naturopathy, Sanskrit etc. The course also i n c l u d e s t h e t e a c h i n g techniques in Yoga, teaching practice in Yoga, field work study tour etc. and study tour as an optional.

    Students are also provided hostel facility at Adhyatma Sadhna Kendra, Chhattarpur, Mehrauli, New Delhi for outside Delhi and NCR Students.

    Eminent subject experts from va r i o u s U n ive r s i t i e s a n d Institutes were invited and delivered lectures to related papers according to the syllabus. The experts were:

    lDYSc: 2010-11, Semester – I Supplementary Examination for Theory papers was held from 16th to 20th January, 2012

    lResult of Final Examination of First Semester of DYSc: 2011-12, held in the month o f J a n u a r y, 2 0 1 2 wa s declared on 13th March, 2012.

    Foundation course in Yoga for paramedical professionals

    conducted individually and in groups as per requirements of the patients and directions of therapists. Yoga classes for normal subjects are being c o n d u c t e d o n M o n d a y s , Wednesdays and Fridays at 6.30 AM and 4.30 PM and for senior citizens on Thursdays between 11 AM and 12 noon. More than 4500 patients attended therapy consultations and practice sessions at ACYTER between October 2011 and March 2012.

    Staff of ACYTER conducted a s p e c i a l Yo g a Aw a r e n e s s programme for more than 50 corporate executives and invitees of the Harmoney Company at Hotel Atithi on January 21, 2012.

    ACYTER staff conducted 40 hour Foundation Course in Yoga for Paramedical Students at the Department of Physiotherapy, Mother Theresa Post Graduate and Research Institute of Health Sciences , Puducherry. 16 s t u d e n t s o f B P T c o u r s e participated in the training programme that included 20 hours of lectures and lecture-demonstrations and 20 hours of practice sessions. The sessions were conducted by Sri G D a y a n i d y a n d S e l v i L Vithiyalakshmi. All participants had 100% attendance. 15 participants reported that they were practising at home daily for an average of 30 minutes. A post intervention, retrospective w e l l n e s s q u e s t i o n n a i r e compiled by ACYTER was used to evaluate the comparative feelings of the participants after the training programme.

    The Advanced Centre for Yoga offers specific Yoga therapy according to the illness of the patient. The process starts first b y c o n s u l t a t i o n b y t h e c o n c e r n e d P s y c h i a t r i s t / N e u r o l o g i s t f o l l o w e d b y consultation by Senior Research F e l l o w ( Y o g a t h e r a p y consultant). The centre also provides Yoga therapy for caregivers of patients with p s yc h i a t r i c d i s o r d e r s t o overcome their stress, burden and improving coping skills. The Yoga services are currently open for these groups of patients and their caregivers.

    The Advanced Centre is offering daily Yoga sessions at Child & Adolescent Psychiatry unit, NIMHANS as a part routine ward activities since past one year. Each day approximately 25 to 30 children suffering from different psychiatric disorders attend these sessions along with their caregivers. Caregivers of the children are welcoming this initiative whole heartedly.

    Advanced Centre for Yoga, NIMHANS is running daily yoga classes at different Psychiatric wards through nursing staff trained in Yoga. A yoga based session containing selected

    The Institute has started Preventive Health Care Units of Yoga initially in Nine CGHS Dispensaries in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) from January, 2009. The response of these centres is overwhelming. By considering the increase demand, the Institute has started 11 more such Preventive

    One meeting of Standing Finance Committee (SFC) (25th) of MDNIY was held on 07.02.2012 under the Chairperson of Joint Secretary (AYUSH).

    One meeting of Governing Council (GC) (14th) of MDNIY was held on 24.10.2011 under the Chairperson of Secretary (AYUSH) wherein several new intiatives and important decisions were taken.

    A Communal Harmony Campaign Week was organized from 19th to 25th November, 2011 in the Institute and Pledge Ceremony was conducted on 19th November, 2011.

    Flag Day was also organized on 19th November, 2011 to raise donations for the rehabilitation of Child Victims of Communal Violence and for promotion of Communal Harmony, National Integration and Fraternity.
