McQuaid Jesuit

McQuaid Jesuit High School, named for the first Catholic bishop of Rochester, the Most Reverend Bernard

J. McQuaid, D.D., is a private, Jesuit college preparatory school for young men in grades 7 to 12. It is

located at the southeast corner of Clinton Avenue and Elmwood Avenue in Brighton, a suburb of

Rochester, NY. Ground was broken for the 32 acre campus on 23 June 1953, and the building was

completed by September, 1955. The first class of McQuaid Jesuit (196 students) was admitted on 8

September 1954. That group of young men, together with the new first year class, started the school‟s

second year in the new complex on 7 September 1955.

The First Invitational

The first McQuaid Cross Country Invitational was held in 1965. The races started and finished at the

school‟s Brighton campus and partly ran through the streets. Fittingly, the very first Varsity Champion was

McQuaid Athletic Hall-of-Famer, Eric Kendrick, who was undefeated in all of his Cross Country races that

season. The McQuaid Invitational was the brain child of Bob Bradley, an English teacher at McQuaid, who

also served as the Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track Coach at the school. He founded the McQuaid

Invitational back in 1965 because local schools did not have a competition planned for that weekend. Over

the years, what began as a small series of races turned into one of the largest High School sponsored cross

country meets in the nation. After only 3 years the McQuaid Invitational had outgrown the school‟s

Brighton campus and area streets. In 1968 the McQuaid Invitational moved to the Henrietta campus of the

Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) where it stayed for 5 years. In 1972 torrential rains and

thousands of runners combined to tear up the athletic fields at RIT. In 1973 the McQuaid Invitational

moved to a permanent home in Genesee Valley Park.

Coach Bob Bradley

According to McQuaid Alumnus, Michael Ansaldi, Bob Bradley‟s fondness of a Jesuit education began at

St. Peter‟s Prep back in New Jersey. He recalls his own running career by quickly retorting, “I was one of

the last people to finish the races.” Upon graduation from St. Pete‟s, young Bradley entered the Marines

and traveled to Korea. He praises his company commander for keeping him alive and out of combat. His

memories of Korea were an incredibly enjoyable experience for growing and learning. After returning to

the states, Bob attended Fordham University in New York. It is here where he recalls contemplating life as

an English teacher. After skipping a test for one of his English classes, his professor spotted and questioned

him. Bob responded honestly, saying he was unprepared for the test. The professor told Bob to have

confidence in himself and gave him an oral exam on the subject. As Bob remembers, the professor stayed

away from tough material and instead asked easy questions. It was at Fordham where Bob began to realize

the importance of educators and their influence on the students. When Bob left Fordham for McQuaid

Jesuit High School, it was from the advisement of a Jesuit teacher at Fordham. He felt a call to continue

down the path of a Jesuit education. Upon arriving in Rochester, Bob quickly found himself immersed in

the close knit McQuaid community. The young bachelor religiously attended mass, sporting events, and

stayed after school to help his students. His freshman level classes read and studied Bob‟s favorite novel,

J.D. Salinger‟s, The Catcher in the Rye. Bob used the book because “high school students can relate to and

understand” its main character, Holden Caulfield. In customary fashion, a Jesuit friend came to the young

teacher when the Cross Country team was in need of a coach after Terry Foley, McQuaid‟s first coach, left

for Penfield High School. Bob decided to test his own endurance on the track that afternoon to see if he

would be able to jog with the runners to Cobb‟s Hill, a destination approximately one and a half miles

away. Upon completion of his own physical test, Bob Bradley became the coach of the Cross Country

team.

Page 2: McQuaid Cross Country Invitational Open · PDF fileMcQuaid Cross Country Invitational Open Race ... Cross-country is considered by most as the prize season of high ... He also helped

With his life revolving around McQuaid, it is no surprise that Bob met his wife, Ann Marie, in the

basement just down the hall from his office. They were introduced by Fr. O‟Malley, S.J., who is well

known for his performance in the movie The Exorcist. The two married in August of 1968. Their three

children and numerous grandchildren have grown up under the principles that Bob has devoted to his

career, students and family.

Recalling the early years with Bob brought back memories of Diocesan championship meets with tight

scores between rival Catholic schools. Bob remembers the details of races as if they just occurred. Today

when runners approach the now retired coach, they always leave shocked at the phenomenal memory and

ever vibrant and engaging personality. Bob is quick to mention the stunning races of the likes of greats like

Erik Kendrick, Peter Glavin, Chris Horton, and Brad Sumner. The countless stories of spectacular finishes,

numerous championships, and record-breaking performances are understandable for a coach to recall.

However, Bob Bradley is just as quick to recant stories of runners who never gave up even with a lack of

natural talent. They push themselves to remarkable things and often times are the difference makers on

teams, he states. These are the runners that are there every day of practice, every meet (even if they aren‟t

racing), and turn themselves into „new runners‟ over the summer, fueled by a drive to make a difference.

Cross-country is considered by most as the prize season of high school distance running. According to Bob,

“Cross-country is pure. You need five runners to sacrifice to make a championship team. It is not just one

individual who can win a race for the team.” Bradley encouraged all students who were not involved with

other teams to come out and learn the beauty and fun of running. This encouragement led to some great

runners coming out and stepping up to complete a team.

When reflecting on his legacy, many recall Bob‟s coaching accolades. However, his pride for the McQuaid

education meant that excellence off the field was most important on the team. Commitment to faith was

never forgotten, with the teams praying before every race and going to masses each season. Also, at award

ceremonies the „Vince Lombardi Award‟ is given to the team member who shows a commitment to faith,

team, and sport. Bob will also attend funerals to show support for students and alumni who face the death

of a loved one. The most important part of his career was his position as a provider of opportunity. Bob

would say about his athletes “[he] was just driving, they had to race”. Bob Bradley would always make

sure his teams had the opportunity to race against the best talent they were capable of competing with. This

played a role in his constant drive to improve and expand the McQuaid Invitational into, what one runner

remarked, “the Woodstock of Cross-country races.” He provided opportunity to city school runners by

directing and organizing the City-Catholic league for years. He also helped to organize the first Rochester

Indoor Track League. He is a constant advocate for many people in need of help.

Bob is truly a „salt of the earth‟ type of person. When discussing the success of Bob‟s career one should not

forget it is the product of a life spent serving others. Bob‟s devotion to his profession, values and faith has

enabled him to make a mark on the world, especially in McQuaid and the Rochester running community.

He is, quite simply, an inspiring and remarkable person. If you‟re at the McQuaid Invitational, stop by and

say “hello” to Bob – he‟s the man in the middle of the chaos still serving as race announcer.

On September 28, 1975, the 11th Annual McQuaid Jesuit High School Cross Country Invitational

was held at Genesee Valley Park. This event, begun as a partial road race from the school‟s

Brighton campus in 1965, had already turned into one of the biggest high school cross country

meets in the country. The Invitational had grown too big for the school‟s Brighton campus and

after a muddy year at the Rochester Institute of Technology‟s Henrietta campus, had found a

permanent home at Genesee Valley Park. The leadoff race of the 1975 McQuaid Invitational

would be a six-mile Open race organized and directed by McQuaid Alumnus Bill Quinlisk, (Class

of 1969) who was an assistant XC Coach at McQuaid and served as assistant Meet Director to

Bob Bradley. The first Open Race was co-sponsored by McQuaid H.S. and the Greater Rochester

Track Club. (At the time Bill Quinlisk was also President of the GRTC)

Trivia Fact: Bill Quinlisk competed in the very first McQuaid Invitational in the Fall of 1965 as a

McQuaid Freshman. He was not one of the top finishers.

22 finishers did not make this a very important race. But, it was a beginning. The small field in

1975 was filled with Rochester running notables, including: GRTC Hall-of-Fame members Len

Bagley, Dave Winn and Bill Quinlisk. The race winner, local Aquinas H.S. and Villanova

University grad, Dick Buerkle, would go on to set the world record for the indoor mile and

represent the U.S.A. in the 5000m at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. And of course who

could forget Roger Tumasonis? The “R.T.” Turkey Run, run annually since 1978, is named after

this Gates-Chili and MCC grad.

The results from Race #3 as printed in one of the early editions of the GRTC Newsletter only used

the first initial and last name in results. I have added first names when known. Anyone who

wishes to help complete these results should e-mail Bill Quinlisk at [email protected]

Notable names in this year’s race included long-time Newark, NY, High School coach Joe

Contario (a very close 2nd place finisher), former SUNY Brockport and Mansfield, Pa. coach Ed

Winrow (24th, 1st Master. This race marked the only appearance of McQuaid HS alum Chris

Horton (7th, 35:10). Chris was the 1976 NCAA Division III National Champion at 1500m in

3:46.9 while a senior at Brandeis University. Chris Horton is still the Section V record holder in

the one mile with an outstanding 4:07.03 converted 1600m time set in 1973 at the Golden West

Track Meet while a senior at McQuaid HS. Nothing is known of race winner, Dan Mazur.

E-mail received from Chris Barber:

“I stumbled upon these results while surfing the Web from home in Virginia, outside D.C. I

finished 6th in the '77 race -- you can add my first name, Chris. (I remember the race pretty

well because Chris Horton was behind me, and everyone was yelling "Go Chris!" and I

pretended it was for me!) I graduated from Gates Chili in '77 and went to Mansfield after that.

Ed Winrow was my Coach and he ran the race that year too. I remember Pete Glavin from high

school races. He was probably a couple years behind me. Whatever happened to Roger

Tumasonis, Bruce Quimby and Rich Saxton? Thanks for posting these results; it was cool to

recall that race.” - Chris Barber

Race Synopsis: World Indoor Mile record holder Dick Buerkle ran stride-for-stride with Cornell

grad, newly-moved to Rochester, the then unknown, Craig Holm, for most of the double loop

course. Averaging around 5:05 per mile on the rolling hills course, Buerkle outkicked Holm, in

the last 200 yards. The 6.4 mile race was the opening run of the 20 race, 3000 runner, 120 High

School teams McQuaid Invitational and for the first time featured an Alumni Team division.

Senior age group (30-39) winner was GRTC XC Coach Dave Winn (10th

) because 30 year old

Derck Frechette (4th

) ran in the Open division. John Coons (22nd

) won the Master division (40+)

beating rival Paul Shanahan (23rd

) by 7 seconds. Women‟s winner was again Barb Miller (36th

).

Leading the McQuaid Alumni Team to victory was Mike Hasenauer (‟70) in 32nd

place.

This was the first appearance in Rochester of Craig Holm. Hired as a hospital administrator at

Strong Memorial, Craig was fresh out of Cornell University. Who was this guy who was trying to

challenge Dick Buerkle, the world record holder in the indoor mile – we all wondered. Dick

Buerkle had his hands full and was really pushed to hold off Craig Holm – who went on to a very

successful running career in the Rochester area for the next 10 years. Look carefully through

these results and I’m sure that you will recognize many other runner’s names of those who have

also gone on to create a legacy for themselves in the Greater Rochester area.

Note: The odd race distance of 6.4 miles was due to a mistake. I still have the original course

map. The distance is listed as 6.0 miles on the map but after the race we re-measured and found

out that runners had actually completed a 6.4 mile course. The convoluted course looped through

the Glen at Genesee Valley Park and included portions of the river trail, golf course service road

and 4 arched bridges over the Barge (nee Erie) Canal.

1st W Mary Beth Glavin 28:08

All that is known of the 1979 McQuaid Invitational Open Race are the names of the winners and

their times. I have the original course map showing a 2-loop mostly road course that started and

finished at the same locations as the High School races. The odd distance was the result of the Rt.

390 expressway construction.

There was a tie for first in the Men’s race as local runner Steve Pulos and Jim Lear, who I

remember being a high school coach at Central Catholic in the Pittsburgh (PA) area, crossed the

line together in 21:22. They had worked hard together from the start and settled on a friendly tie

at the end. The women’s champion was Mary Beth Glavin in 28:08. Mary Beth Glavin is the

sister of McQuaid Alumnus, and XC Invitational Meet Director, the late Peter Glavin.

This was the first year that the open race was run after the High School races and over the same

course. Race time was 3:30 p.m. A special Catholic School Alumni Challenge Cup was offered to

the top 5 runner team of alumni from McQuaid, Aquinas, Kearney and Mooney. See the race

summary below for the results of the challenge.

Race Summary: The race was run under ideal conditions following a great High School meet. The

High School portion involved some 2500 runners from 110 schools. In the open race run over the

High School Boy‟s Varsity course, a group of 4 runners established the early pace. Local Senior

star Dave Winn led through the hilly first mile in 4:59. Leo Finucane, Mike Hoban and Coach

Jim Lear from Pittsburgh Catholic HS were all tightly bunched behind Winn. Leo Finucane

forged ahead in the second mile and was never headed after that. Mike Hoban made a late charge

aided by a wrong turn by Finucane on the well-marked course but Leo proved the stronger kicker

and won by a stride.

The race was also highlighted by the inauguration of the Alumni Challenge Cup. Five-runner

teams of local HS alumni vied for the massive trophy. The McQuaid Alumni team ran a tight

pack of 11, 12, 19, 21 and 22 to hold off a Leo Finucane led Aquinas Alumni team who finished

1, 20, 32, 33 and 40. This portion of the race will be continued so round up your team for the

1981 race.

Looking at the distaff side of the race, Barb Miller was never seriously challenged and ran strong

the entire way. Divisional winners were Carolyn Cloos and Barb Bergeron. Ken Berkes won the

Master Men‟s division.

The following was taken from the McQuaid Alumni Newsletter:

This year the McQuaid Invitational Cross Country meet had a special added attraction. In the

open 3 mile race sponsored by the Greater Rochester Track Club a special Alumni Challenge

trophy was offered to the top 5-runner team of local High School alumni. Fittingly, the challenge

was won by the team from McQuaid led by Brian Hart (‟75) who finished 11th overall in a field of

some of the Rochester area‟s top runners. Other McQuaid finishers included Mike Hasenauer

(‟70) in 12th, Pete Clark (‟69) in 19

th, Bob Wafer (‟69) who flew in from California to place 21

st

and Steve Burnett (‟79) the current McQuaid Freshman XC Coach who rounded out a well-

grouped team with a 22nd

place finish. The open race was truly a McQuaid alumni affair as Bill

Quinlisk (‟69) was the race director and several other members of the McQuaid faculty

participated. Other alumni of interest: 1st place – Leo Finucane – Aquinas ‟76, and McQuaid

alumni Time Jones (‟74) 35th, Kevin Burnett (‟75) 55

th, Steve Fahy (‟68) 58

th, Gary Jones

(Faculty) 60th, and Steve Moulton (‟79) 61

st. The rotating Alumni Challenge Trophy is on display

in the Principal‟s Office at McQuaid and it is hoped that even more alumni will run next year‟s

race.

Note: Sadly, the Alumni Challenge Trophy only lasted until the 1986. The 4 foot tall Trophy was

won that year by an alumni team from Batavia HS and never returned.

Chris Fleischman won the 3-mile race in 16:15.

There is a notation on the entry blank for 1982’s race where the past winners were listed that

indicates “mud” after Fleischman’s 1981 winning time.

Lynne Fox was the Women‟s champion in 20:29.

The McQuaid Alumni team won the Challenge Cup and was led by Mike Hasenauer‟s 9th

place

finish.

Race Synopsis: The race went out very fast with the lead pack passing the first mile of a rolling

hill course in 4:45. Bob Birecree and Leo Finucane forged the pace most of the race with Birecree

out kicking former Aquinas H.S. teammate Finucane in the last 100m to win by six tenths of a

second. Former Williamsville North H.S. star Karl Blaeuer, now at U. of R., was third six

seconds back. In spite of the 1-2 finish of Birecree and Finucane, the Aquinas Alumni team was

beaten by the defending champs from McQuaid. Aquinas placed 1, 2, 29, 49 and 62 for a total of

143 points. While the McQuaid Alums, led by Tim Jones and Mike Hasenauer held places

race there were 17 different High School races with over 3500 runners. Note: several of the High

Schoolers also ran off course.

Race Synopsis: The 9th

edition of the 3-mile Open race at the McQuaid Invitational Cross

Country Meet run at Genesee Valley Park saw Dave Coyne of Avon establish a new course

record of 15:05 for the relatively flat course. The race was run under ideal conditions for those of

us use to hot and humid Rochester summers. There were 10 dnf‟s due to the heat and humidity.

Coyne led a pack containing the top seven finishers right from the gun and only 2nd

place Ray

Stemmer was able to stay anywhere near once past the first mile. Lynne Fox of Gates-Chili led

the women finishers in 19:44 (53rd

overall) beating 2nd

place Mary Beth Glavin of now defunct St.

Agnes HS by 25 seconds. The special Alumni Challenge Cup awarded to the top 5-runner team

from the same High School again went to McQuaid Alums. The McQuaid Alumni team of Tim

Jones (13), Mike Hasenauer (22), Bill Kehoe (39), John Hurley (45 with a pit stop) and Bill

Quinlisk (52) held off strong challenges from teams East, Penfield, Sperry and Aquinas Alumni

to win for the 4th

year in a row. Can no one stop this domination?

Note: The open race course has stayed 3 miles since 1980. Long-time McQuaid High School XC

Coach and Invitational Founder and Director, Bob Bradley, often made changes to the

racecourse configuration. The course has basically stayed in the area of the park known as the

“Glen”. There have been loops added and subtracted over the years. Hill loops have been

included one year and the next the race would add the paved bike path under the expressway

bridges. Bob Bradley always tried to make the course as spectator friendly as possible. In doing

this he allowed the large crowd of parents, friends and coaches to view much of the race.

The 10th Annual McQuaid Invitational was run under ideal conditions. With the temperature a

comfortable 55-60 degrees, no wind and a dry, well-marked course, the conditions were perfect.

Scott Bagley took advantage of the conditions as he ran the fastest time ever run on this 3-mile

course. His time of 14:29.5 is faster than the over 20,000 runners who have run this course over

the years. Earlier in the day, during the High School portion of the Invitational, Ron Markezich of

Williamsville, NY ran the course record of 14:40.2, which, until Scott, was the best ever. Ron‟s

time will still stand as the High School course record but now Scott Bagley doesn‟t have to take a

Page 23: McQuaid Cross Country Invitational Open · PDF fileMcQuaid Cross Country Invitational Open Race ... Cross-country is considered by most as the prize season of high ... He also helped

backseat to any High Schooler in the State. Helping Scott to this top time was the steady pressure

supplied by 2nd

place finisher Pete Glavin whose 14:41 time is the 3rd

best ever run on the course.

Lynne Fox handily won the Women‟s title and became a 3-time winner of this race by lowering

her time from last year by over a minute.

For the 5th

year in a row, the McQuaid High School Alumni won the special Alumni Challenge

Cup by dominating the team scoring. With their top 5 finishers placing 2, 9, 16, 18 and 26 they

easily outdistanced the half-hearted efforts to dethrone them from the alumni of East, Aquinas,

Hilton, east Rochester and Brighton.

The High School portion of the Invitational constituting 20 races and over 3500 runners from 160

schools ran like clockwork. The entire day of racing was a tremendous spectacle. Next year‟s date

is Saturday, September 28th. Let‟s hope that the McQuaid Alumni team gets a challenge from

someone.

Scott Bagley’s outstanding time would remain the course record for 8 years. Both Scott Bagley

and runner-up finisher Pete Glavin would never again run as fast over 3 miles as they did on this

beautiful Fall day. However, both men have had very successful running careers, which continue

to the present day. Pete Glavin would go on to found the Genesee Valley Harriers running club

and become the Meet Director of the McQuaid Invitational. Pete Glavin passed away in 2010.

Bagley has become a local legend and is known as the “King of the Roads” in the Rochester

Area.

Race synopsis: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and…

The 3-mile Open race finished off a great day of running at the annual McQuaid High School

Cross Country Invitational. The 85 starters made it the smallest of the 21 races run on a brilliant

Fall day over a fast, dry Genesee Valley Park racecourse. Brothers Charlie and Tim McMullen

charged into the lead by the 400m mark and forged a very fast early pace apparently intent on

challenging Scott Bagley‟s 14:30 course record. The first 800m was run under 2:20 and they were

4:45 at the mile mark. Trailing the McMullens were a pack of more sensible runners led by

Edinboro State (Pa.) College XC team who were in Rochester to observe the high school races,

which attracted 3500+ runners from over 160 schools. Also in the pack were local stars Mike

Hoban and Ray Stemmer. Just past the 1.75-mile mark in the course with the McMullen Bros.

Still holding a 75m lead the course forks out of the picnic glen for a turn-around loop on a paved

bike path. At this point both Charlie and Tim took a wrong turn. They had arrived late and were

unable to jog the course before the race so they took the road less traveled by and that made all

the difference.

Mike Hulme of Edinboro ran away with the win by 20 seconds over hard charging Senior star

Mike Hoban. Ray Stemmer in 4th

was the only other local finisher to break into the top 6.

The distaff side saw Buffalonian Marguerite Ekiss defeat perennial winner Lynne Fox and local

Master Mary Shaver in a relatively slow 19:15. This was well off Barb Miller‟s 18:06 course

record.

A balanced Aquinas Alumni swiped the Alumni Challenge Cup with Leo Finucane (10th

) and Bob

Birecree (14th

) leading the way. Aquinas‟ total of 112 points (10,14,25,26 and 37) just nipped

teams from Greece Athena (142 pts: 7,8,13,46 and 68) and perennial power McQuaid (157 pts.:

15,18,30,34 and 60). The McQuaid Alumni ran without pre-race favorite Pete Glavin who was

stranded in New Jersey due to Hurricane Gloria. Certainly the McQuaid Alumni will return the

Challenge Cup to its rightful spot next year.

I recall timing this race and watching both Charlie and Tim McMullen run by me at the finish

line going in completely the opposite direction from the rest of the runners. Charlie gave me a

shrug and said “where do we go now?” They probably ran an extra ½ mile. Charlie and Tim

both admitted that they had arrived late and did not have an opportunity to preview the course.
