MSD Launches ALL DAY, EVERY DAY Campaign to Promote

Regular Attendance

o Absenteeism in the first month ofschool can predict poor attendancethroughout the school year.

o One in ten kindergarten and firstgrade students are chronically absent(‘chronically absent’ is defined asmissing 10% or more of school, whichis equivalent to missing about 1.7days per month).

o Students who are chronically absentin kindergarten and 1st grade are lesslikely to read at grade level by thetime they finish 3rd grade.

o By 6th grade, students who arechronically absent are significantlyless likely to graduate from highschool.

o By 9th grade, chronic absenteeism is abetter indicator than 8th grade testscores that a student will drop out.

o It does not matter whether absencesare ‘excused’ or ‘unexcused.’ Theimpact on a student’s academicachievement is the same.

o A student who misses 20 days ofschool per year only has a 20% chanceof ever graduating.
