Once again, Ian earned A-level grades in all his exams. He completes the year with one A- and the rest solid A’s. That record is incredibly impressive, especially given his course load, which includes three honors level classes! This spring, Ian did seem a bit more tired than earlier in the year. I expect it was a combination of the end of a long year and the rigor of crew. I was really pleased that Ian was able to work through this and keep up his academic work. Ian is clearly so bright and interested in learning. Ian always has a lot on his mind, and he enjoys the give and take of ideas. His passion for learning is sure to bring Ian pleasure and success in the years ahead. Ian – have a great summer! Good luck next year. Maybe our paths will cross in math or computer science class. I think you will enjoy sophomore year with your new advisor, Ms. Ohmoto-Whitfield. My one piece of advice: work harder to get to school on time. Advisor Group 111-7 Exam: A- Trimester 3: A- Final: A- Rob Leith I owe much of my fun teaching this class to Ian and his love of debate. We discussed plenty of debatable points this year, and I could always rely on Ian to contradict the group’s received wisdom. This led to many of our best discussions. I hope I have a chance to teach Ian again, when he reaches senior year. Though his quick wit and outstanding memory have allowed him to prosper without developing equally sharp study habits, something that will come in time, he has produced nothing but good work since early in the year, and particularly during the final trimester. Two highlights were his exemplary analysis of “Romeo and Juliet” and then his hilarious performance as Romeo driven to drink by his unrequited love for Rosaline. Ian is seriously smart, a stimulating class contributor, and a very fine writer. I hope he enjoys a well-earned summer vacation. ADV-54 Exam: Trimester 3: Final: Mark Fidler

Ian has completed an outstanding first year at the Upper School. Once again, Ian earned A-level grades in all his exams. He

completes the year with one A- and the rest solid As. That record is incredibly impressive, especially given his course load,

which includes three honors level classes!

This spring, Ian did seem a bit more tired than earlier in the year. I expect it was a combination of the end of a long year and

the rigor of crew. I was really pleased that Ian was able to work through this and keep up his academic work. Ian is clearly so

bright and interested in learning. Ian always has a lot on his mind, and he enjoys the give and take of ideas. His passion for

learning is sure to bring Ian pleasure and success in the years ahead.

Ian have a great summer! Good luck next year. Maybe our paths will cross in math or computer science class. I think you

will enjoy sophomore year with your new advisor, Ms. Ohmoto-Whitfield. My one piece of advice: work harder to get to

    school on time.

I owe much of my fun teaching this class to Ian and his love of debate. We discussed plenty of debatable points this year,

and I could always rely on Ian to contradict the groups received wisdom. This led to many of our best discussions. I hope I

have a chance to teach Ian again, when he reaches senior year.

Though his quick wit and outstanding memory have allowed him to prosper without developing equally sharp study habits,

something that will come in time, he has produced nothing but good work since early in the year, and particularly during the

final trimester. Two highlights were his exemplary analysis of Romeo and Juliet and then his hilarious performance as

Romeo driven to drink by his unrequited love for Rosaline.

Ian is seriously smart, a stimulating class contributor, and a very fine writer. I hope he enjoys a well-earned summer

    231-2 Exam: A Trimester 3: A Final: A Peggy Payne

Ian continues to be bright, enthusiastic, inquisitive, animated and eager. His pleasure in making connections is obvious in

class. At times, Ian speaks before he has fully formed his thoughts. At other times, it can be challenging to convince him that

he has made a mistake in his thinking. He has much to offer to his talented classmates, but I encourage him to slow down,

pull his thoughts together and be open to the wisdom of others.

    303-1 Exam: A Trimester 3: A Final: ACecile Roucher-Greenberg

Flicitations pour une excellente anne de franais, Yannick! It was my pleasure to get to know the Francophile and the

humorous student that you are. Your enthusiasm for the language and your playful use of it every day in and out the

classroom, are commendable. I am grateful that I could always count on your class participation, including this past trimester

when studying Au revoir les enfants, a French film in its original version without subtitles. On the written side, you were able

to apply new grammar and vocabulary to improve the overall quality of your writing. From your description of Le Petit

Princes 7th planet to the Au revoir les enfants denunciation letter, you showed a sound command of the language and

conveyed your excellent knowledge of the material creatively. You rounded up the year with an A on your final exam and a

sliver medal on Le Grand Concours: you ought to be commended for such great results and take pride in them. I have enjoyed

teaching you very much and I hope our paths cross again. I wish you the best in French 3 Honors and before that: merci pour

tout ton joyeux travail en francais, Yannick, et bonnes vacances!

    412-2 Exam: A Trimester 3: A Final: AManna Ohmoto-Whitfield

Ian, you continue to be a great counterpoint in Honors Biology. Your enthusiasm and energy serve the class well. You have a

knack for being able to make connections across topics, you are unfazed by occasionally missing the mark if it means that you

are able to flex your mental muscles. You enjoy taking risks, you enjoy stretching your understanding of topics and this helps

nudge everyone out of their comfort zones of expecting simple answers. You have worked to maintain the balance of focus

necessary to keep your engagement productive but not subdued and this has helped you become a leader by example. I

encourage you to continue to look for courses that enable you flex your mental muscles and that force you to use your powers

for good! It has been a pleasure to have you in class and I hope you have a wonderful summer.

508-1 Exam: Trimester 3: A Final: AMatthew McDonald

The third semester of the year was highlighted by a research paper. Over the course of the 5+ week assignment, students

became proficient with the basic elements necessary to write a historically related paper. Students were allowed to choose

from some aspect of human history up to 1492 C.E., or on a topic relating to the Holocaust. Once a topic was identified, each

student learned the range of methods for conducting research, created an annotated bibliography, became familiar with

footnoting and citing sources, drafted a thesis statement and detailed outline, and submitted a rough draft, all before

    completing a 1300-1500 word paper.

Ian - yet again, you have performed extremely well in this class, and your research paper about propaganda was articulate and

well crafted. You have consistently demonstrated an ability to see the big picture and nuanced positions that helped your

peers understanding of topics we discussed. Thanks for your good humor, and best of luck in the coming years!

684-2 Exam: Trimester 3: A Final: AMark Lindberg

It was good in the last month of the spring term to see you couple your considerable energy with a more disciplined approach

to real work, Ian. Over the course of the second half of the term a need to impress the classroom audience began to be

supplanted by a commitment to your own belief in the truth of what you were doing. You continued to approach the work

with your lively intelligence and you were now so much more successfully focused onstage rather than off. With your Mice

and Men scene, you were beginning to trust the process of simply talking to, listening to your partner. Early work on the

scene found you waiting for or jumping your cues so that you could try your line. By the last day of class you had began to

listen and respond with a more compelling honesty. The result was an insightful, engaging characterization. I have very much

enjoyed our work together this term and I hope that there will be opportunities for more theatre work in the years ahead of you

    at BB&N.

    Work Habits

Ian had a solid season. He needs to learn how to make changes in his technique more quickly. He has a strong

future in rowing if he focuses on building strength in the off-season.

The league that we row in has become increasingly competitive in recent years. It is more important than ever

that BB&N athletes take off-season training seriously. When the actual rowing season start, we need to be

prepared in terms of strength and fitness. The coaching staff is more than happy to provide specific workout
